Photo: Y. Chardaloupas / SPP Environmental Value of AnGR: Breed Case: Water buffalo, Greece Report by: Ch. Ligda 1 and Y. Kazoglou 2 1 National Agricultural Research Foundation 2 Municipality of Prespa 62 nd EAAP Annual Meeting, 29 August 1 September 2011, Stavanger, Norway
Introduction Animal husbandry as a conservation management tool in protected areas to restore and/or maintain specific habitat types Water buffalo (Bubalus bubalis) is perfectly adapted to the environmental conditions of wetlands Water buffalo grazing for the control of high emergent helophytes (e.g. the common reed Phragmites australis) and maintenance of wet meadows/ grasslands. A littoral site at Lake Mikri Prespa grazed by water buffaloes (Photos: Y. Chardaloupas / SPP, March and July 2005)
The region -1 Wet meadows on the littoral zone of Lake Mikri Prespa (a Ramsar site) have relatively low herbaceous vegetation and are seasonally flooded Key sites for: feeding water birds (herons, glossy ibises, pygmy cormorants and pelicans) spawning fish, especially phytophilous species as the carp (Cyprinus carpio), the main fishery of the area amphibians, reptiles and invertebrates Greylag geese in wet meadows in spring (photo: Y. Kazoglou)
The region -2 Wet meadow areas dramatically decreased after the mid 80s due to the abandonment of traditional activities Most of these areas were dominated by dense reed beds, not offering the services of wet meadows to wetland wildlife Pelican colonies in the reedbeds (photo: L. Nikolaou / SPP)
The project -1 Pilot study by the NGO Society for the Protection of Prespa (SPP), the Aristotle University - School of Forestry and Natural Environment and the French Station Biologique de la Tour du Valat Utility of water buffalo grazing in restoring wet meadows to the benefit of wetland wildlife LIFE-Nature project (LIFE02 NAT/GR/ awarded as Best of the Best in June 2009, (by SPP) Water buffalo grazing, as sole management activity or combined with summer cutting to restore wet meadows on a total of 70 ha around Lake Mikri Prespa
The project -2 The SPP continues maintaining wet meadows by water buffalo grazing with very good results in : vegetation structure and composition at the managed sites, and use of these littoral sites by feeding birds and spawning fish. Lake Mikri Prespa, Greece: - Grazed ungrazed littoral site (left) - Summer cutting of reedbeds to restore wet meadows (right) (photos: Y. Kazoglou)
Results Adaptation to wetland conditions Minimal veterinarian care Low need for supplementary feeding Efficiency in restoring and maintaining wet meadow vegetation Water buffalo grazing in a wet meadow site of Lake Mikri Prespa in spring (photo: Y. Kazoglou)
Threats for the environment Ceasing the water buffalo grazing activity on wet meadow sites, reed beds will re-establish within 2-3 years Establish rotational grazing schemes to take care of overgrazing Stocking density of 2.2 LU/ha/year to maintain wet meadows in Lake Mikri Prespa.
Threats for the breed Lack of interest by farmers to start new or developing farms Lack of interest for buffalo breeding if not linked to subsidies Deficient marketing of buffalo products Difficulties in obtaining permissions for the operation of farms in or near wetland areas
Challenges/opportunities for the future The Greek water buffalo population increased from 590 heads in 1992 (11 herds in 8 locations) to 3100 heads in 2010 (28 herds in 21 locations of the country) due to the agro-environmental measures (for the conservation of autochthonous animal breeds) Proposals the environmental services role should be further promoted and used as a conservation measure for wetland areas with similar characteristics (and conservation needs) to Lake Mikri Prespa further promotion of production and marketing of water buffalo meat and dairy products
