36 Blue Crab Habitat: Weight: Length: Estuaries and salt marshes 1 to 2 pounds Males can be 7 to 8 inches across; females are smaller in size Lifespan: 3 to 4 years in the wild Food: Omnivores (mussels, snails, fish, plants) Blue crabs can be found all the way from Massachusetts to Texas! Crabs like a mixture of salt and freshwater environments that are found on the Eastern and Southern shores of the U.S. Prized by humans for their sweet, tender meat, blue crabs are heavily fished. Their scientific name, Callinectes sapidus, means savory beautiful swimmer. Female blue crabs mate only once, but may have babies several times afterwards. Blue crabs also shed old shells to get new ones. It takes two to three hours to shed the old shell. Blue crabs have teeth in their stomach! Sounds gross but that s where they chew what they eat.

37 Bottlenose Dolphin Habitat: Weight: Length: Lifespan: Food: Temperate and tropical waters 300 to 600 lbs. 6 to 12 feet 20 to 40 years Carnivore (fish, squid, crustacean) Bottlenose dolphins are known for their short, thick beaks - hence the name "bottlenose". Their mouths contain pairs of sharp cone-shaped teeth on each side of their jaws. Bottlenose dolphins have great flexibility because they have fewer fused vertebrae in their necks than other dolphins. The bottlenose dolphin is generally a dark gray on the upper part of its body, fading into a lighter gray on both sides of its body. The belly color can range from white to light pinkish color. Males are usually slightly larger than females. The dorsal fin of bottlenose dolphins is tall, broad and curved. Bottlenose dolphins are very social animals known for their carefree and playful behavior. Bottlenose dolphins can be seen living in groups called pods. These groups may contain only a few members or many hundreds when different pods meet up and join one another.

38 Brown Pelican Habitat: Beaches, sandbars, islands, docks Weight: 30 pounds Length: Body feet; Wingspan, 10 feet Lifespan: 10 to 25 years in the wild Food: Carnivores (fish, crustaceans, turtles) Pelicans are one of the largest birds and have the largest bill of all birds. It can reach 18 inches in length. Underneath the bill, pelicans have throat pouch that can hold 3 gallons of water. The pouch is mainly used for feeding, but it can be also used as a cooling device. During the warm days, pelican will swing its pouch to cool itself. The pelican is easily recognized by its large body, short legs with webbed feet and a wingspan of 10 feet. Their webbed feet are used for swimming and diving. Pelicans can eat 4 pounds of fish per day. They are very social birds and live in large colonies composed of several hundred birds.

Their snout is hard. The Gulf Sturgeon have a toothless, vacuum-like mouth that projects from the lower surface of the head and four whisker-like barbels. The backbone is cartilaginous like those of sharks. Sturgeon colors range from light neutral to dark brown and have a white belly.

40 Loggerhead Turtle Habitat: Weight: Length: Lifespan: Food: Status: Open oceans and estuaries 170 to 350 pounds 31 to 45 inches 50 Years or more Jellyfish, sponges, shellfish, shrimp, squid, barnacles, sea urchins and sea weed. Endangered The Loggerhead Turtle is readily identified by its reddish brown coloration and broad head. The front and back flippers have two claws. Loggerheads mate in offshore waters near beach nesting areas. The clutch size is 35 to 108 ping-pong ball size eggs, and the incubation period ranges from 46 to 65 days. The loggerhead is thought to be the largest living hard-shelled turtle. The loggerhead is the only living species in the genus Caretta.

41 Manatee Habitat: Weight: Length: Lifespan: Food: Florida s coastal waters 1,500 to 1,800 pounds 10 to 12 feet 50 to 60 in the wild Sea grass, freshwater vegetation The Manatee is a marine mammal. They are grayish brown in color and have thick wrinkled skin. Their front flippers help them steer, or sometimes crawl through shallow water. They also have powerful flat tails that help propel them through the water. Their small eyes and lack of outer ears, manatees are thought to see and hear quite well. Manatees communicate by squealing under water to demonstrate fear, stress or excitement.

42 Octopus Habitat: Bottom of ocean floor warm waters Weight: 8.8 pounds to 33 pounds Length: Four feet across arms outstretched Lifespan: 12 to 18 months Food: Bottom feeders; Crustaceans Status: Endangered The Octopus is a soft bodied, eight arm Mollusca. The Octopus is bilaterally symmetric with two eyes and a beak, with its mouth at the center point of the arms sometimes called tentacles. They trail their eight arms behind them as they swim. They live in various regions of the ocean including coral reefs. The eyes are large and located at the top of the head. Octopus have three hearts and a very keen eyesight. They have an excellent sense of touch and can taste everything they touch. Octopus have a short lifespan. They are highly intelligent and can camouflage themselves easily blending in with their surroundings.
