1 June Ocean City Marlin Club Officers Franky Pettolina President Mark Radcliffe Vice President Annette Cropper Secretary Brian Tinkler Treasurer BOARD OF DIRECTORS N. Dave Birkett Ron Callis James Jefferson Val Lynch James Giles Bill Regan John Sippel 9659 Golf Course Rd Ocean City, MD A Message from the President - I predicted some fishy things in my opening write up in last month s Marlin Bill and they sure proved to be true. With that being said I would like to welcome you to the first ever Nothing but Fishing Letter from the President. I am going to work in chronological order of the events since the last Marlin Bill, so here we go. Bluefin Tuna and a scattering of Yellowfin showed up right after last month s Bill went online. That coupled with the Memorial Day Bluefish Tournament made for a very fishy Memorial Day weekend. We had a good turnout for the tournament and were able to raise $3,830 for the Catherine and Charles Kratz Memorial Foundation and Scholarship Fund (special thanks to member Colin Campbell for a very generous donation to the cause!). The bluefish cooperated and we had good numbers of fish coming to the scales on both days of the tournament. When the dust settled we had a tie in first place between the Big Herring and the Reel Estate. Congratulations to all of the winners, and thanks to the staff and volunteers for making the tourney a success. While I was out fishing on Sunday of the tournament I was drooling over the numbers of tunas that I heard being caught, when all of a sudden I heard something to really drool over. Through radio relay it was confirmed that the Marli with Capt. Brian Porter at the helm and Anthony Pino on the rod had captured the first White Marlin of the season. This is the earliest that the first white has ever been caught!! Congrats to the crew of the Marli!! Over the first few days of June the tuna bite stayed red hot and the Mako sharks were staying consistent. Hopes were high for the Mako Mania tournament to be held out of Bahia Marina over the first weekend of the month. Although the shark fishing proved to be a little slower than expected, and the size of the winning fish was a little smaller than most people would have predicted, the tournament was still a huge success. When the dust settled OC Marlin Club boats had swept the Mako category of the tournament. In first place was the Blackjack with Capt. Eric Schline (I hear he had a special guest crewmember who has been hogging all the glory on the catch so I won t mention my, err, make that his name here). Second place was taken by the Tighten Up with Capt. Jason Genthner, and in third place was the Moore Bills with Capt. Rob Skillman. These fish were all within 3 pounds of each other so it was definitely an exciting finish. I will also give a little shout out to the crew of the Wayne s World for doing battle with a HUGE Thresher for about 6 hours on the last day of the tournament. The fish ended up getting away, but the crew still deserves credit for targeting a big Thresher and connecting with one. Anybody that fishes regularly knows that sometimes the fish win. And honestly I think that is what keeps us going back out there day after day. What fun would it be if you caught every fish that bit?

2 A Message from the President - (continued) Following the Mako Mania Tourney the tuna fishing stayed anywhere from good to outright fantastic. There were good numbers of Bluefins being caught inshore, with some Yellowfin mixed in. Mahi showed up anywhere from the 20 on out to the deep, and of course Yellowfins were still thick in the canyons. With all that life out there everyone was sure that the first Blue Marlin of the season would show up at any minute. And of course, the fish complied. The 2 nd Friday in June proved to be the hot day with multiple Blue ones being caught. The first was captured by the Lady Luck with Capt. Tommy Baldwin at the helm. This fish was just an hour before a fish caught on the My Turn with Capt. Larry Dougherty. Larry actually called me to see if his fish was the first. As luck would have it I did not know about the Lady Luck s fish yet at that point so I gave Larry some bum info. I guess I owe you a beer bud!! Congrats go out to both crews, and to all of the crews that got in on the action that day. Our next 2 tourneys of the season will be happening before the next Marlin Bill is written, so I want to wish everyone one good luck in the Small Boat Tournament and the Canyon Kickoff. Hope to see you at the scales is off to a spectacular start. There have been more Marlin taken in the early season than anyone can ever remember. The tuna fishing has been phenomenal. Could we be on our way to a repeat of last year? Could it be even better (as hard as that is to imagine)? Only time will tell, but right now I am excited about the coming season. Until next month I will see ya at the Club, or hopefully out on the rip!!! Franky Pettolina Anthony Pino caught & released the First White Marlin on the Marli on Sunday, May 29, 2011 at 2:31 p.m. outside the Rockpile after hooking it on a naked ballyhoo. Switch your shower head If yours is old it likely rates at 5.5 gallons per minute or more. Newer ones can be as low as 1.5 gpm. Look for a model that s at least lower than 2.5 gpm. That s approximately 45 gallons of water saved per 15 minute shower. Think abut all the hot water you re not having to heat. 2. Check your faucet aerators Installing low-flow faucet aerators is the single most effective water conservation savings you can do for your home. Plus, they are cheap and easy to switch. 3. Speed up hot water If you wait for more than 30 seconds for hot water at any faucet in your home, install a recirculation pump to stop wasting water. Some pumps can be installed by a savvy do-it-yourselfer, but if in doubt hire a licensed electrician. Consider this: 3 minute wait for hot water equals 7.5 gallons wasted times 2-times a day equals 15 gallons down the drain a day or over 5,000 gallons of waster per year. You re paying for that! 4. Swap the toilet Some new toilets don t just use less water, they have dual flushing systems to use less water for liquid waste and more for solid. 5. Pack the dishwasher You ll was more dishes with less water in the dishwasher over hand washing. To be even more sensitive to the environment, consider using a reduced phosphate, or phosphate-free dishwasher detergent. Interested in learning more?
