Euroopa Kalandusfondi raames on käivitunud kalanduspiirkondade säästva arengu toetusmeede. Kalanduspiirkondade säästva arengu meede on välja töötatud eesmärgiga toetada kalandussektoris toimunud muudatuste tõttu sotsiaalmajanduslikesse raskustesse sattunud piirkondades tegutsevaid kalureid ja kalandussektorit laiemalt, aidata kaasa kalanduspiirkondade säästvale arengule, elukvaliteedi parandamisele ja ühistegevuse arendamisele. Eestis on 8 kalanduspiirkonda. Käesoleva brosüüri eesmärgiks on anda ülevaade Võrtsjärve äärsete rannakülade eluolust: viia lugeja korraks tagasi ajalukku, tutvustada tänapäevast olukorda ja kalanduse hetkeseisu ning pakkuda külastajaile erinevaid võimalusi veeturismiga tegelemiseks. Life in the coastal villages at Lake Võrtsjärv has been revived owing to the financial aid of the European Fisheries Fund, part of which will be allocated directly to the development of fishery, while activities related to the reorganisation of the economic activity of the fishery sector, the arrangement of training for the fishermen and the revitalising of the coastal villages will not go unnoticed. The sustainable development support measure of the fishery areas has been initiated within the European Fisheries Fund. The sustainable development measure has been worked out with a view to supporting the fishermen operating in areas having encountered socio-economic difficulties, due to changes occurred in the fishery sector, and the fishery sector in a broader sense, contributing to the sustainable development, the improvement of the quality of life and the development of the joint activity of the fishery areas. There are 8 fishery areas in Estonia. The objective of this booklet is to give an overview of the status of the coastal villages at Lake Võrtsjärv, to take the reader back to history for a brief moment, to introduce the situation nowadays and the current status of fishery, and to offer the visitors various opportunities to get engaged in water tourism. 3

KALANDUS FISHERY Võrtsjärv on Peipsi, Pihkva ja Lämmijärve järel suuruselt teine Eesti siseveekogu (270 km²), kus on käinud ja käib ka praegu küllaltki intensiivne kutseline kalapüük. Võrtsjärves elab 35 erinevat liiki kalu, kellest enim püütavad on haug, latikas, ahven, koha ja angerjas. Eesti kalanduse ja Võrtsjärve sotsiaalmajanduslikud uuringud näitavad, et viimastel aastatel kalurkonna olukord järjest halveneb. Eelkõige on see tingitud kalahindade kiirest mahajäämusest võrreldes üldise elukalliduse tõusuga, teisalt on piirkonniti kalavarud ülepüügi tõttu kõvasti kannatanud. Võrtsjärve näol on tegemist Eesti tingimustes eripärase veekoguga, kus kõrvuti looduslike kalaliikidega on suure tähtsusega angerjas, mille varude säilitamiseks investeeritakse igal aastal suuri summasid. Kõige tundlikumad looduslike tingimuste järskude muutuste, ülepüügi ja muude varusid ohustavate tegurite suhtes on koha ja haug, kelle arvukust kalandusuuringud ja kaitse püüavad säilitada optimaalsel tasemel. Kuna angerja maimud nn klaasangerjad on järve toodud (ostetud) ja tema täiendus ei sõltu nagu teiste kalaliikide puhul kudejate arvust, on majanduslikult põhjendatud neid võimalikult palju välja püüda. Samuti lubatakse Võrtsjärves piiramatult püüda latikat, sest suhteliselt kasina toidubaasi juures on tema kudemistingimused siin väga head. Seega on Võrtsjärve kalavarude haldamine seotud peamiselt kooskõla leidmisega kahe erineva pooluse vahel kohalike liikide säästlik ja angerja maksimaalne väljapüük. 4 Võrtsjärve päikeseloojang Võrtsjärv is the second largest internal body of water of Estonia (270 km²) after Lakes Peipus, Pihkva and Lämmijärv, where rather busy commercial fishing has been and is going on. There are 35 different fish species in Lake Võrtsjärv, the main catch of which is the pike, bream, perch, pike-perch and eel. Socio-economic research of the Estonian fishing industry and Lake Võrtsjärv show that during the past years the situation of the fishermen has been deteriorating. This is mainly due to a rapid lag of fish prices when compared to the increase in the general cost of living, while on the other hand the fish resources of the area have suffered from overfishing. In the form of Lake Võrtsjärv, one deals with a unique body of water in terms of Estonia, where beside natural fish species the eel has great importance; great amounts of money are being invested every year to maintain its resources. The most sensitive concerning rapid changes of natural conditions, overfishing and other factors endangering the resources are the pike-perch and eel, the abundance of which the fishery research and protection are trying to maintain at an optimum level. Since the eel fries, so-called glass eels, have been introduced (purchased) into the lake and its addition does not depend on the number of spawning fish, as is with other fish species, it is economically justified to catch them as much as possible. The catching of the bream from Lake Võrtsjärv is also unlimited, since its spawning conditions are very good here at its relatively scarce food base. Thus the administration of the fishery resources of Lake Võrsjärv is mainly related to finding accordance between two differing sides the sustainable catch of the local species and a maximum catch of the eel.

Järgneva 10 aasta saagid peaksid tõusma ja püsima umbes järgnevalt: haug tonni, latikas tonni, angerjas ~20 tonni. Kalapüügi kogused varieeruvad aastati erinevalt. Tänane kalamajandus Võrtsjärvel lõpeb sisuliselt kala püügiga ja esmakokkuostjale müümisega. Väikeses mahus on toimiv kala esmane töötlus. Võrtsjärv on viimaseil kümnendeil hakanud omandama ilmseid latikajärve tunnuseid. Võrtsjärve headest suurtest Pootsman Ants Leiaru kalasuppi keetmas Suitsulatikas töönduskaladest on latikas olnud stabiilselt kõige saagikam. According to the general trend of European internal waters, the catches of the following 10 years should be increasing and be within the ton as follows: the pike tons, the bream tons, the eel ~20 tons. The amounts of the fish catch vary differently by the year. The fishing at Lake Võrtsjärv practically ends with the catching of the fish and selling it to first buyers. The firststage processing of the fish is operating in a small amount. Lake Võrtsjärv has started to acquire the properties of an obvious bream lake in the past decades. The bream's catch has steadily been the largest out of the great big industrial fish of Lake Võrtsjärv. The status of its population has improved, especially after the removal of the catch limitations. The success of the fishing industry at Lake Võrtsjärv mainly depends on the abundance of the pike-perch, pike and eel. The big fish of prey will control the small minnow, while the eel yields the bulk of the profit. 5

Fishing shall be performed pursuant to fishing rights. Fishing rights are either free of charge or subject to a fee. Depending on the fishing gear used, a difference is made in terms of fishing rights between line fishing, recreational fishing, and commercial fishing. A person may exercise the specified fishing rights if he or she has performed the acts necessary to create such rights. 2. Kes tahab kasutada teisi sportlikke püügivahendeid, see peab lunastama üle riigi kehtiva harrastuspüügi õiguse. Seda saab teha panga maksekorraldusega või mobiilimaksega, kusjuures kalapüügiõigust tõendabki panga maksekorralduse koopia koos isikut tõendava dokumendiga või mobiilimakse puhul vaid isikut tõendav dokument. Harrastuspüügiõigus annab loa kalastada järgmiste kalapüügiseaduses toodud vahenditega (lubatud kuni kolm samavõi eriliigilist püügivahendit): rohkem kui üks lihtkäsiõng, käsiõng, spinning, vedel, sikuti, lendõng, põhjaõng (tonka, krunda), und, räimeõng (tohib kasutada merel), harpuunpüss ja harpuun. 2. Anyone willing to use any other sporting fishing gear shall purchase the recreational fishing right valid all over the country. This can be done by a payment order or mobile phone payment, whereby the fishing right shall be certified by a copy of the payment order, together with an identity document, or, in the case of a mobile phone payment, only with and identity document. The recreational fishing right will allow fishing with the following gear mentioned in the Fishing Act (up to three items of fishing gear belonging to the same or different types may be used): more than one simple hand line, hand line, spinning reel, trolling line, pulling device, fly hook, bottom line (tonka, krunda), unanchored trimmer, Baltic herring line (may be used in the sea), harpoon gun or harpoon. Recreational fishing in Estonia may be divided provisionally into three: 6 1. Everyone may fish free of charge with one simple hand line. No special permit or document is required for that purpose, one only shall follow the Fishing Rules in effect and any other laws in effect in the Republic of Estonia. A simple hand line consists of a rod, fishing line of 1.5 of the length of the rod and single hook where natural bait is used for fishing and which may also be fitted with a weight and bob.

Milliseid kalu ja millal võib püüda? Which fish and when may be caught? Kalapüügil peab neil kaasas olema vastav soodustust andev dokument. 3. For the fishing rights of the third degree, in addition a fishing card issued by the Environmental Board shall be required. Fishing cards shall govern the use of a certain item of fishing gear, in order to avoid damage to fish resources due to overfishing. A fishing card shall be required when catching with a longline, entangling net, dragnet or hoopnet, as well as when catching the crayfish with a dipnet or trap, or when catching Salmonidae (in the salmon rivers and the trout rivers of Järva County) with a spinning reel or fly hook, or when catching with underwater fishing gear in Lakes Saadjärv and Kuremaa. Võrtsjärves on keelatud püüda haugi jäävabas vees 15. märtsist 30. aprillini; linaskit 20. juunist 20. juulini, välja arvatud püük lihtkäsiõnge, käsiõnge ja põhjaõngega. Nearly all of the 75 species of fish and Cyclostomata known to exist in Estonia may be caught. Only the sturgeon, catfish, asp and grayling as endangered species are fully forbidden to catch. The undersized individuals or individuals of the aforementioned species or other species caught in closed seasons shall be freed from the fishing gear and introduced back into the water with caution. It is recommended to perform it with wet hands, as to damage the mucous membrane of the fish protecting it from microbes as little as possible. It is forbidden to catch from Lake Võrtsjärv the pike in ice-free water from 15th March to 30th April; the tench from 20th June to 20th July, except for catching with a simple hand line, hand line or bottom line. 7

Igas sekundis läheb siit teele keskmiselt 24 kuupmeetrit vett. Emajõe ületamise probleemi on tulnud lahendada läbi aegade. Kunagi viis Jõesuust üle parv, a. sai valmis uus sild. Raudbetoonsild valmis a. septembriks. RANNAKÜLAD COASTAL VILLAGES Jõesuus 2009-ndal aastal valminud uus sild on Eesti pikima avaga: ühes otsas asuvast toest teise otsa toeni on 90 meetrit. Jõesuu paadisild Here Lake Võrtsjärv ends and the River Suur-Emajõgi starts, where Viljandi and Tartu Counties meet. Here Tartu-Viljandi Highway and the Võrtsjärv-Emajõgi- Peipus waterway have crossed from ancient times. The waves of Lake Võrtsjärv go from here to the bed of the River Emajõgi and start a 101-kmlong trip towards Lake Peipus. In every second an average of 24 square metres of water starts off from here. The problem of crossing the River Emajõgi has had to be solved over the times. Once a raft used to take people across Jõesuu, in 1924 a new bridge was completed. As early as in 1933 the bridge made of raw timber was fully rotten and about to collapse. In March 1936 a Finnish construction company closed the bridge for traffic and a raft was used again to cross the river. An iron bridge was competed by September A new bridge completed in Jõesuu in 2009 has the longest opening in Estonia: it is 90 metres from the support at the one end to the support at the other end. It is the first steel arch bridge in Estonian highways and the mesh framework design is also new. It is now possible to cross the River Emajõgi by two bridges. In the location of a former inn building, which used to belong to the Võisiku landlord, Georg Karl Heinrich von Bock, the Võrtsjärve Visitor Centre has been established by now. In the Visitor Centre tourists will get all information on the area and there are also the main office of Lake Võrtsjärv Fisheries Development Agency and Lake Võrtsjärv Foundation. 9

Valma Teateid Valma külast (Walmabe) on aastast Valma kaluriküla on tuntud tüüpilise kammkeraamika leiualana. Kiviaegne asulakoht paikneb Saba talu juures madalal järve ulatuval neemikul, nn Saba nukil. Matmispaigast leitud mehe kolju jär- Valma mees gi valmistas M. Gerassimov portree büsti, mis on tuntud VALMA MEHE nime all. Valma m e e s o n ü k s Eesti aladel elanud inimeste vanimaid esindajaid - vanus ca 5-6 tuhat aastat. Reports form Valma Village (Walmabe) date back to The Valma fishermen village is known as a typical deposit of comb ceramics. The Stone Age settlement is located on a cape stretching into the lake on a shallow at Saba Farm, the so-called Saba End. 10 In archaeological excavations performed in 1950 and , pieces of pottery from the Comb Ceramics period and flint bone items were found in the Stone Age settlement of Valma. M. Gerassimov made a portrait-bust after the scull of a man found in the burial place, which is known as the VALMA MAN. So far the Valma Man is the oldest resident of Estonia known to us by the face. Today the people of Valma follow the footsteps of the ancient fishermen. Valma is one of the compact settlements immediately on the shore of Lake Võrtsjärv, where the main field of activity of the residents is fishing and fish Valma kaluritoa püstkoda processing. There is also the largest fishing port at Lake Võrtsjärv, since most of the professional fishermen of Lake Võrtsjärv are concentrated in Valma or its vicinity. 45 holders of a fishing permit are operating in the Võrtsjärve fishing area.

Kivilõppe also houses a fish protection guard station and port administered by the Environmental Inspectorate, where in addition to the launches of the environmental inspectors bigger ships can land too. In the territory there are a watchtower and boatshed, where both tools and fishing gear forfeited from poachers can be stored. A specially prepared place is used by the inspectors to clean and sort the fishing gear forfeited and to service the supervision equipment and machinery. A small hiking trail takes to the Devil s Stone of Kivilõppe. The Ivanov Channel at the Kalevipoja Stone is used by recreational fishermen and yacht owners aastast töötab Limnoloogiakeskuse kõrval Võrtsjärve järvemuuseum Kalala. Kalala" järvemuuseumi põhiekspositsiooni moodustavad akvaariumides elutsevad Eesti mageveekalad. Väljapanek on unikaalne, sellises liigilises koguses mujal Eestis meie mageveekalu ei eksponeerita. Siseruumides on 15 akvaariumi, lisaks suveperioodil välibasseinid. Vehendi Village has been a popular holiday place for decades. There is the Vehendi Holiday Centre here suitable for vacation and tenting. For decades the area has been important also from the point of view of science. In 1954 a field base of the Institute of Zoology and Botany was established here the present Centre for Limnology of the Estonian University of Life Sciences. The Centre for Limnology has a rich and ever-growing database with research data on ca 700 Estonian lakes. Since 2006 the Võrtsjärv Lake Museum Kalala is also operating beside the Centre for Limnology. The main exposition of the Kalala Lake Museum consists of live Estonian freshwater fish in tanks. The display is unique, our freshwater fish are not displayed anywhere else in Estonia in such an abundance of species. There are 15 tanks in the interior space, in addition external pools in the summer period. Vehendi Vehendi küla on populaarne puhkekoht olnud aastakümneid. Siin puhkamiseks ja telkimiseks on sobiv Vehendi puhkekeskus. Aastakümneid on piirkond olnud tähtis ka teaduse seisukohalt aastal loodi siia Zooloogia ja Botaanikainstituudi välibaas praegune Eesti Maaülikooli Limnoloogiakeskus. Limnoloogiakeskusel on rikas ja pidevalt kasvav andmebaas uurimusandmetega ca 700 Eesti järve kohta. 11

12 The first written data on a place called Langbrücke, which translates as Pikasilla (Longbridge), date back to year An old road junction, bridge location and inn location. Previously, the River Väike- Emajõgi was crossed by raft. The settlement and bridge were destroyed in World War II. It can be fairly judged by the name that bridges play a key role in the history of Pikasilla. By them the River Väike-Emajõgi was crossed for both trade trips and military campaigns. The last, concrete bridge opened in 1958 lasts to this day. The Pikasilla holiday area has opportunities for sporting an athletics stadium, basketball backboards, a volleyball court, a long jump pit and an infrastructure necessary for accepting tourists. In the vicinity of the holiday area there is an open-air stage together with benches for the audience and stands servicing the visitors. There is a landing pier on pontoons at the shore of the holiday area, in order to allow a more comfortable use and attractiveness of the holiday area to both visitors and recreational fishermen.

Kale kahvelpurjed võimaldavad tal purjetada tuulega kuni 45 kraadise nurga alla risti. Kalepurjekas Paula Võrtsjärve külastuskeskus The Võrtsjärve Visitor Centre Keskus asub Tartu Viljandi maanteel Kolga-Jaani ja Rannu valla piirimail Suur-Emajõe suudmes. Ökoloogilistest materjalidest hoone, mille ehitusel kasutati savikrohvi, puitu, puitlaastu ja põhku, valmis aasta juunis. Kunagi asus külastuskeskuse asemel hoopis Võisiku mõisale kuulunud kõrts, mis kahtlastel asjaoludel mitmeid kordi maani maha põles. Võisiku mõis asus Viljandimaal Kolga-Jaani kihelkonnas, esimesed teated mõisa kohta pärinevad aastast Aastast 1804 on säilinud Jõesuu kõrtsi asutamise dokumendid. The kale boat Paula completed in 2005 under the guidance of Väino Leiaru, one of the last boat masters alive, is the only one among its counterparts and offers trips on Lake Võrtsjärv for those interested in ancient ships and fishing. The sailboat Paula, or a single-masted kale boat, is 12.6 metres long, the height of the mast being 15 metres, it has two triangular sails a large main sail attached to the mast and a small jib sail in front of it. It has a shallow draft and the centreboard elevated when landing and in the case of shallow water extends a mere metre and twenty centimetres below water level. The trysails of the kale allow it sailing at an up to 45-degree angle transversely with the wind. Centre is located at Tartu-Viljandi Highway, on the border of Kolga-Jaani and Rannu Rural Municipalities, at the mouth of the River Suur-Emajõgi. A building from ecological materials, at the building of which clay plaster, timber, woodchips and litter were used, was completed in June Once there was an inn belonging to the Võsiku Manor instead of the Visitor Centre, which burned down in suspicious circumstances several times. The Võisiku Manor was situated in Viljandi County in Kolga-Jaani Parish, the first reports on the manor dating back to year The documents of the establishment of the Jõesuu Inn from 1804 have preserved. 13

Saabumisel antakse Võrtsjärve SA turismikorraldaja poolt põgus ülevaade külastuskeskuse tegemistest ja piirkonnast tervikuna, pakutakse kohvi, teed ja suupisteid. Peale külastuskeskusega tutvumist sõidetakse edasi Vehendi külas asuvasse Kalala järvemuuseumi, kus akvaariumisaalis saab näha Eesti magevetes elavaid kalu, nende seas on ka haruldasi ja kaitse all olevaid liike. Ilma veeta akvaariumisse on välja pandud Võrtsjärvest püütud kõige suurema kalavalgeamuuri mulaaþ. (2-päevane, toodet pakutakse suvehooajal 1. juunist 31. augustini) (2-day, the product package is offered during the summer season from 1st June to 31st August) Süüakse angerjasuppi, pajatatakse lugusid endisaegsetest kalapüügiviisidest ja kaluritraditsioonidest ning Võrtsjärve piirkonna elust tänapäeval. DESCRIPTION: On the first day a group (an optimum number of people) will arrive at the Võrtsjärve Visiting Centre in Rannu-Jõesuu. On arrival a s hort overview on the activities of the visiting centre and the area as a whole will be given by a tourism organiser from Võrtsjärve SA, coffee-tea and snacks will be served. After becoming acquainted with the visiting centre, the Lake Museum situated in Vehendi Village will follow, where Estonian freshwater fish, including also rare and protected species, can be seen. A model of the biggest fish ever caught from Lake Võrtsjärv a Grass Carp is displayed in an aquarium without water. To see the inhabitants of the pool through a magnifying glass will surely be of interest. A kale sailboat with its jolly two-man crew will be waiting for the seafarers at the jetty of the Centre for Limnology. The kale sailboat will offer a genuine experience in its traditional way. Eel soup will be eaten, stories of bygone fishing methods and fishermen traditions and thelife of the Lake Võrtsjärv area in the modern times will be told. A kale is a traditional wooden trawling sailboat used on Lake Võrtsjärv, which, owing to its graceful appearance, was often used also on cruises and regattas. A kale sailboat with a slim hull has two triangular sails a large main sail attached to the mast and a small jib sail in front of it. When trawling, the sailboat would always move leeward, side ahead, pulling a kale (trawl) on the side of the sailboat. The name kale comes from a large-mesh net, or kale, used when trawling. In better times, which were between the 1930s-1970s, 70 kale sailboats altogether could have been observed on Lake Võrtsjärv. 15

Torupillitalus võtab külalised vastu peremees At the end of the 1960s, introducing baby eels in Lake Võrtsjärv was started, as a result of which trap fishing was beginning to be used more widely. One fishing method would start to interfere with the other, and trawling with a kale would finally be prohibited. After the ban the idea behind kales would be lost, and they would perish little by little In 1985 the last sailboat of Valma Village was burned in the Midsummer Eve bonfire. In order to revive the traditions of the building of kale sailboats, MTÜ Kaleselts was established in 2007, where both kales and rowboats are built, and it is possible to become acquainted with their activities both on their homepage and in Valma Village on the spot. The first modern kale sailboat on Lake Võrtsjärv was completed with help by Võrtsjärve SA in The kale sailboat will take the travellers to the Port of Pikasilla, where a bus will be waiting and taking the visitors to the Bagpipe Farm situated in Riidaja Village. Where else could one get a better overview of bagpipe music and traditions than on the Bagpipe Farm established by the legendary Tauls, at only 10 kilometres Ants Taul, kes tutvustab torupillimuusikat ning pillivalmistamise traditsioone kui üht olulist osa Võrtsjärve piirkonna inimeste kultuurielust. Hanesid (peamiselt suur-laukhane) on siin kevadeti loendatud kuni isendit, sügiseti isegi kuni isendit, hanede seas on kohatud ka haruldusi näiteks punakael-laglet. The Anseriformes and Charadriiformes feed in fields between Tamme and Sangla and rest on the flooded polder. Up to 35,000 individuals of geese (mostly the Greater Whitefronted Goose) have been counted here in spring, while even up to 50,000 individuals in autumn; also rarities have been encountered among geese the Red-Breasted Goose, for instance. The Wigeon, Shoveler and Garganey, Goldeneye and Pochard rest in great numbers on the polder, while the Smew, Great Crested Grebe and Red-necked Grebe and other aquatic birds may be encountered here too. Of the Charadriiformes, the Curlew, Ruff, Wood Sandpiper and Spotted Redshank rest on the polder in the largest numbers. Also such rarities, as the Marsh Sandpiper, Little Crake and Citrine Wagtail, have been spotted in Väike- Rakke. The large number of resting 17

Tamme paljandi maastikukaitseala asub Võrtsjärve idakaldal Rannu valla Tamme ja Neemisküla vahelisel alal. Siin paljandub Aruküla lademe liivakivi. Tamme paljand on tuntud rüükalade leiukohana. Kõrgelt paljandilt avaneb paiguti hea vaade ka järvele. Peale huvitavat ja muljeterohket linnuvaatluspäeva sõidetakse Vaiblasse Veldemani Puhkemajja, kus süüakse õhtust ja jäädakse ööbima. Saun on samuti külastajatele köetud. Lisaks linnuvaatlusele väljas, pakume õhtul vaatamiseks suurepärast slaidiprogrammi Linnulennul mööda Emajõge loodusfotograaf Arne Aderi esituses, kes on nimetatud programmi üks autoritest. Kui soovitakse üldisemat ülevaadet Eestimaa loodusest, on võimalus tellida ka mõni teine slaidiprogramm Arne Aderi varamust. Arne Ader on suurepärane jutuvestja ning pakub piltidele olulist lisaväärtust oma jutuga. aquatic birds will also attract a large number of birds of prey. A number of the Bittern, Marsh Harrier, European and Great Reed Warbler nest in the thickets of reeds of Lake Võrtsjärv. During the autumn migration, a peculiarity of Lake Võrtsjärv is massive transmigration of the Smew (in addition to the large flocks of geese). The Tamme Outcrop Landscape Protection Area is situated on the east shore of Lake Võrtsjärv, in an area between Tamme and Neemisküla Villages of Rannu Rural Municipality. The sandstone of the Aruküla bed is exposed here. The Tamme outcrop is known as a deposit of the Placodermi. Here and there a good view on the lake opens from the high outcrop. After an interesting birdwatching day full of impressions, the people will be taken to Vaibla to the Veldeman Guesthouse, where they will have dinner and stay for the night. The sauna will be heated for the visitors too. Teise päeva hommikul süüakse hommikust Veldemani Puhkemajas ning seejärel suundutakse Rannu-Jõesuusse, kus võtab grupi vastu kanuuretke juht (OÜ 360 kraadi matkagiid Bert Rähni), kes tutvustab marsruuti, annab ülevaate eelseisvast retkest, räägib turvalisusest ning veendub, et kõik grupi liikmed on varustatud päästevestidega. Alam-Pedja kanuumatka peateemad on Eesti ühe suurima ja liigipääsmatuma kaitseala metsik loodus ning eripalgeline sisevete võrk. Aerutame Emajõel, Pede jõel, Põltsamaa jõel, teeme ringi Võrtsjärvel, vaatame kopraid, kuulame linde ja ulume hunte välja. Kanuudega sõidetakse Jõesuust Palupõhja külla, kus pannakse asjad looduskooli ning süüakse matkasööki. In addition to the birdwatching in the outdoors, we offer a magnificent slideshow, Bird s-eye view of the River Emajõgi, presented by the nature photographer Arne Ader, who is one of the authors of the said show. If a more general overview of Estonian nature is desired, it is possible to order another slideshow from the collection of Arne Ader. Arne Ader is also a great storyteller and will surely add extra value to the photos with his talk. In the morning of the second day breakfast will be eaten in the Veldemam Guesthouse and then the people will head for Rannu-Jõesuu, where the group will be welcomed by the guide of a canoe trip (hiking guide of 360 Kraadi Ltd, Bert Rähni), who will introduce the itinerary, give an overview of the trip planned, speak about safety and make sure that all the members of the group are equipped with lifejackets. The main themes of the canoe trip on the River Alam-Pedja are the nature and diverse network of the inland waters of one of the largest and most difficultly accessible protection areas of Estonia. We will row on the Rivers Emajõgi, Pede, Põltsamaa, make a tour around Lake Võrtsjärv, see the beavers, listen to the birds and howl the wolves out of the woods. The people will canoe from Jõesuu to Palupõhja Village, leave their belongings in the nature school and eat hiking dinner.

Enne päikeseloojangut minnakse tagasi jõele, sest alles siis läheb seal tõeliselt põnevaks. Emajõe vanajõed on ideaalseks elupaigaks kobrastele. Aerutatakse vaikselt mõne koprakuhila juurde, kus tõenäoliselt õnnestub meil mõnda looma vaadelda. Pimenedes liueldakse vaikselt allavoolu ja üritatakse huntide ulgumist kuulda. Eriti sügiseti on susid väga suhtlemisaltid, kuna just sel ajal õpetatakse kutsikatele hundielu. Matka teisel päeval aerutatakse Pede jõe suudmesse ja sealt Before the sunset they will return to the river, since only then it becomes really exciting there. The old rivers of the River Emajõgi serve as an ideal habitat for beavers. We will row quietly to a beaver lodge, where we will probably be lucky enough to observe an animal. As it is getting dark, we will be going downstream quietly and trying to hear the howl of the wolves. The wolves are very keen on communicating, especially in autumn, as cubs are being taught wolf life. The roe deer, pigs and moose will come to feed in the meadows followed by a pack of wolves. We may be lucky to happen to be in the same area with the wolves in that very evening In the evening the sauna will be heated and impressions exchanged before a fireplace. On the second day of the hike the people will row to the mouth of the River Pede and on to the River Põltsamaa. The hike will end at the Laashoone Bridge. During the day we will see a wide variety of river landscapes first the powerful and rapid Suur-Emajõgi, then the quiet, wide, straight and darkwatered Pede, and finally the narrow and winding Põltsamaa. The group will be taken to the next destination desired, if need be. PROVIDERS: Lake Võrtsjärv Foundation, Natourest Ltd., 360 Kraadi Ltd., Veldemani Guesthouse, Loodusemees Ltd. 19

20 (2-päevane, toodet pakutakse talvehooajal, kuupäevad sõltuvad ilmastikuoludest) (2-day, the product is offered during the winter season, the dates depending on the weather conditions) KIRJELDUS: Grupp (optimaalne suurus inimest) saabub Valma külla, kus neid võtab vastu MTÜ Kaleselts esindaja Marko Vaher. Valma kalurite eestvõttel tutvustatakse endisaegseid kaluritraditsioone, käiakse järvel jääalust kalapüüki tegemas. Lõunasöögi käigus saab maitsta Võrtsjärve kalurite valmistatud kohalikku kala. Võrtsjärv on olnud kalarikas veekogu läbi sajandite. Võrtsjärve keskmine kalasaak on üle 400 tonni aastas, sellest 60-70% moodustab hea toidukala. Angerja üliväikest looduslikku populatsiooni Võrtsjärves on alates a. üsna pidevalt täiendatud, lastes igal aastal järve tillukesi klaasangerjaid. DESCRIPTION: A group (an optimum number of people) will arrive in Valma Village, where they will be welcomed by a representative of Kaleselts NGO, Marko Vaher. Under the leadership of Valma fishermen, bygone fishermen traditions will be introduced, fishing under ice will be conducted on the lake. In the course of lunch local fish prepared by the fishermen of Lake Võrtsjärv can be tasted. Maitse Võrtsjärve! Taste Lake Võrtsjärv! Peale lõunasööki võtab grupi üle OÜ 360 kraadi mänguinstruktor, kes viib läbi matkamängu piirkonna kaluritraditsioonide ja loodusväärtuste tutvustamiseks. Peale matkamängu sõidetakse Valmas asuvasse Järveveere Puhkekeskusesse, kus süüakse õhtust ja jäädakse ööbima, soovijad saavad ka saunas käia. Õhtuseks tegevuseks pakume võimalust vaadata Arne Aderi slaidiprogramme või tellida kuulamiseks Anu Tauli kontsert. Lake Võrtsjärv has been a body of water rich in fish throughout the centuries. 36 species of fish have been caught from Lake Võrtsjärv and its inflows. The main industrial fish are the zander, eel, bream and pike. The perch and roach are numerous, with permanent inhabitants being the vendace, European smelt, ide. In the fifties and sixties Lake Võrtsjärv was accompanied by the sad repute of a lake of the ruffe, since the majority of the fishery catch was the small fry of low value. Owing to the implementation of the proposals by the research fellows of the Centre for Limnology (quitting trawl fishing, intensifying fish protection, regular introduction of baby eels), large and valued fish prevail in the catch these days. The mean fishery catch of Lake Võrtsjärv is over 400 tons a year, 60-70% out of which is good foodstuff fish. The minute natural population of the eel in Lake Võrtsjärv has been replenished on a continuous basis since 1956, by introducing tiny glasseels into the lake every year. 22 MÄRGA HUUMORIT Laev on uduse ilmaga merel. Kapten märkab eespool valgust ja signaliseerib: "Hoidke 10 kraadi paremale!" "Hoidke ise 10 kraadi paremale!" "Võtke otsekohe 10 kraadi paremale!" signaliseerib kapten uuesti. "Siin on ristleja." "Soovitame siiski teil endal kõrvale tõmmata," tuleb vastus. "Siin on nimelt rannamajakas." Vahimadrus tormab kaptenikajutisse: "Kapten, me vajume." "Nii!" ümiseb kapten. "Ja kui kaugel on maa?" "Pool miili." "Mis suunas?" "Vertikaalsuunas." Vene laeval on õudne paanika. "Kes kurat viskas vildiga juhtpuldi operaatorit? Kes viskas vildiga?" röögib ristleja pardal olev admiral. "Meil Ameerikas küll sellist segadust pole..." vangutavad ameeriklased päid. "Pole teil enam mingit Ameerikat!" karjub admiral. "Kes kurat viskas vildiga juhtpuldi operaatorit?" Ookeaniaurik möödub väikesest saarest, mille peal habemega mees meeletult karjub ja vehib kätega. "Kes see on?" küsib reisija kaptenilt. "Pole aimugi. Ahoi! Kapteniabi on just kapteniks ülendatud ja on tähtsusest lõhki minemas. "Teie telefon on tumm. Tulin seda parandama." "Teil, kapten, on merel muidugi ka raskeid päevi olnud?" pöördub ajakirjanik kapteni poole. "Kõike on ette tulnud, pojake," vastab merekaru. "Näiteks mäletan ma elu lõpuni seda kohutavat päeva, mil meie laevas rumm otsa lõppes!" Kõik me tegelikult oleme oma harjumuste ohvrid... Kartulit keedad- vee valad ära- sama makaronidega, pelmeenidega, riisiga... Tolliametnik astub laeva pardale. Narkootikume on? Jah, palun, siin kohvris, vastab kapten. Aga relvi? Palun automaadid, revolvrid, kaks granaati. Arvatavasti on ka valuutat? Jah. Eurod, dollarid. Tolliametnik on segaduses: Ja see koik on teie oma? Ei, see on teie oma. Minu oma on all trummis!
