John Warren Reynolds Oligochaetology Laboratory, 18 Broadview Court, Kitchener, ON Canada N2A 2X8 ( ca) ABSTRACT This survey of the earthworms from 16 of the 23 counties of Wyoming recorded 12 species of terrestrial Oligochaeta, all members of the family Lumbricidae. Five of these are reported for the first time from the state: Allolobophora chlorotica, Dendrobaena octaedra, Lumbricus rubellus, Lumbricus terrestris, and Octolasion tyrtaeum. Key words: Wyoming, Oligochaeta, Lumbricidae, earthworms, distribution. INTRODUCTION The history of the presence of earthworms in Wyoming is relatively recent when compared to that for other states and provinces, e.g., Arkansas (Causey, 1952, 1953), Missouri (Olsen, 1936), Ohio (Olson, 1928) and more recently Montana (Reynolds, 1972), Tennessee (Reynolds et al., 1974), South Carolina (Reynolds 2001a), and New Brunswick (Reynolds, 2001b). Gates (1942) presented the first checklist and bibliography of North American earthworms. While his paper summarized data from over 100 papers published during the previous 121 years, Gates included no records from Wyoming. In al of Gates contributions to a revision on the family Lumbricidae (Gates, 1972, 1973, 1974a, 1974b, 1967, 1977,1978a, 1978b, 1979, 1980, and 1982), only one (Gates, 1967) mentioned earthworms from Wyoming (five species: Aporrectodea rosea [as Eisenia rosea], Aporrectodea trapezoides, Ap. tuberculata and Ap. turgida [as Allolobophora] Bimastos parvus, Dendrodrilus rubidus [as Dendrobaena rubida], and Eiseniella tetraedra), but only in passing, without any locality information. In his paper on the Lumbricidae of the western United States, Fender (1985) reiterated the casual reference to the presence of earthworms in Wyoming,
2 34 The Earthworms of Wyoming, U.S.A. but included neither distributional information nor new records. In subsequent discussions with Gates (pers. comm.), and after reviewing old notes left to me by him, I was able to determine the locations mentioned in that paper (Gates, 1967). The locality information for those seven species, taken from Gates notes, appear for the first time in this paper. Additionally, this paper reports five species not previously reported from Wyoming: Allolobophora chlorotica, Dendrobaena octaedra, Lumbricus rubellus, Lumbricus terrestris, and Octolasion tyrtaeum. COLLECTIONS In presenting the considerable amount of data obtained for the state of Wyoming, I have followed the original format used in Reynolds et al. (1974) for the state of Tennessee, and in more recent earthworm surveys (Reynolds, 1994, 2001a, 2001b). The USNM designation after the collection refers to the field/collection number of the United States National Museum Smithsonian Institution (USNM). Any author reference following the locality information in the accounts, below, represents a collection that has (in part or in total) been reported previously. several occasions and make additional observations and collections on the earthworms present in the state. I am also indebted to several of my colleagues at Schneider National as well as those from my graduate school days who made collections for me during their travels throughout the state. RESULTS The format for the reporting of the collection data for Wyoming is the same as was used for Tennessee (Reynolds et al., 1974) and all subsequent state and provincial surveys. The site coding (e.g., AL- 01) refers to the county, using letters followed by the collection number from that county. The polynomial that follows refers to the number of juveniles - aclitellate adults - clitellate adults - postclitellate adults (when a fourth is used). The state of Wyoming is completely south of the southern limit of glaciation in the United States (41?00' - 45?00' N, 104?05' - 111?05' W), yet it is surprising that, to date, only one native North American earthworm species the ubiquitous Bimastos parvus has been colected from the state. This paper presents limited data resulting from a preliminary survey of the state: earthworms have not yet been reported from seven of the 23 counties, and the known distribution of species elsewhere in the state is presently limited to the results of a single collection from 14 of the other 16 counties. Additional sampling for earthworms in Wyoming should increase the list of species for the state, undoubtedly including one or more native species, particularly representing the genus Bimastos. Reynolds (1972) reported Bimastos beddardi from the neighbouring state of Montana and Swartz (1929) recorded B. parvus from Nebraska. In his paper on the Lumbricidae of the western United States, Fender (1985) synonymized B. parvus, B. beddardi, and B. tumidus. In any event, he reported the two Wyoming records from Gates (1967) but did not include any records from any adjacent states, including the 1972 record of B. beddardi from Montana mentioned above. This is a significant earthworm survey, only so far as it is the first attempt to determine the earthworms present in the state of Wyoming. As earthworm surveys go, however, it is far from providing a complete picture of the presence and distributional pattern of the earthworm species present in the state. Hopefully, this survey will provide college and university students with encouragement and the opportunity to survey the diversity of habitats throughout Wyoming, particularly in areas now lacking records. ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS The author wishes to thank his colleagues at Schneider National Carriers as well as colleagues from other organizations for their assistance in obtaining additional samples from Wyoming. Appreciation is also extended to Dr. Marion Pettibone, Linda Ward, and others at the Smithsonian Institution who have arranged access to material at their institution for examination over the years. My gratitude extends to Wilma M. Reynolds of the Oligochaetology Laboratory and Mark J. Wetzel of the Illinois Natural History Survey for reviewing the manuscript, their comments and suggestions. John Warren Reynolds Oligochaetology Laboratory, 18 Broadview Court, Kitchener, ON Canada N2A 2X8 ( ca) Nunavut is the newly created (in 1999) northern territory of Canada. No earthworm collection records were previously reported from this area even when it was a part of the Northwest Territories (NWT). In fact, there have been only two literature reports for the Canadian northern teritories both recent. Berman and Marusik (1994) reported Bimastos parvus and Dendrodrilus rubidus from the Yukon Territory (YT). Reynolds and Moore (1996) reported Eisenia foetida from Yellowknife, NWT. The locations of the northern territories can be seen in Figure 1. Specimens have been received recently which provide the first record of an earthworm species from Nunavut and only the second report of an earthworm from the Northwest Territories. Lumbricidae: Eiseniella tetraedra This is the typical form with male pores on segment xiii. With so few records of earthworms from Canada snorthern territories, it is obviously difficult to speculate on their diversity and distributional patterns in these vast, relatively unexplored areas. With the recent increased interest in global warming and fragile Arctic ecosystems, additional attention is being directed towards these regions. These studies undoubtedly will contribute significantly to our knowledge of their faunal and floral diversity. Fig. 1. The geographical location of the Canadian territories. Nunavut is in black.
