3 Meetings The Tropical Fish Club of Erie County, Inc., meets the third While browsing the internet the other day I stumbled across a YouTube video of small fish jumping out of the water and a aching itself to a hanging leaf to mate. I immediately had to do some research on this! What I found was the splashing tetra or Copella Arnoldi is a small South American tetra around 2.7 inches on average. It is found naturally in the slow moving tributaries of large rivers such as the Amazon. They prefer a lot of vegeta on, roots, branches and leaf li er and usually appear in very dim condi ons. The reproduc on of this fish is what makes it so unique one very few fish that actually breed out of water. The male will select a suitable place to breed, usually over hanging vegeta on or leaves. Once the site is chosen the male will use his colors and fins to a ract the female. Once the pair have courted they both jump out of the water and a ach themselves to the overhanging vegeta on using there pelvic fins. They remain on the leaf for up to 10 seconds and release and fer lize the eggs. Usually eggs are deposited at a me. They repeat the process un l up to eggs are deposited. Once the eggs are laid the female plays no further role. The male will remain under the eggs in the water; he splashes them with water and watches over them un l the hatch and fall into the water usually hours a er being laid. At this point paternal care ceases. Aquarium care: These li le gems can be kept and in some cases bred successfully in an aquarium, they like heavily planted tanks with high oxygen levels but not much surface agita on. A lot of floa ng vegeta on is recommended because they like dim ligh ng. Dried leaf li er is also recommended for a natural feel and the addi onal microbe growth during decomposi on is good for addi onal food source for fry. It is not recommended to add the fish to a biologically immature tank as they cannot tolerate swings in water chemistry. They can with stand temps 68 82, and Ph. 4.0 to 7.5. These micro predator feed on ny invertebrates and zooplankton, flake food is a sustainable subs tute and some people feed fruit flies. In aquarium se ngs its best to keep a mixed sex group of 8 10 for breeding. The do best as the only species in the tank and if no proper hanging vegeta on is provided have laid eggs on the sided or lids of aquariums. Over all a very impressive li le species and I was able to find that some have been sold on aquabid in the past, I definitely want to add this to my future breeding projects. Tuesday of the month at The Chicken Coop, VFW Post 8113, 299 Leydecker Road, West Seneca NY. Meetings start at 7:00PM. All are invited. Our Purpose The purpose of the Tropical Fish Club of Erie County is to bring hobbyists of tropical fish and aquatic plants together, those who are interested in breeding, raising, showing, or just plain looking at fish and aquatic plants. Also to aid members through lectures, films and slide presentations on different aspects of the tropical fish hobby. Exchange Policy The Tropical Fish Club of Erie County will send a copy of this newsletter to any club who sends us a copy of their publication. Reprint Policy Any article may be reprinted by another aquarium society, providing the source and author are given credit, and a copy of your publication is sent to us Page 3

5 Ge ng to the actual plumbing we used a 1 1/2 inch PVC pipe that we purchased from a home goods store. We needed to have some curves in our pipe to dump the water into our first sump chamber, this is accomplished one of two ways. 1) a 90 degree elbow or 2) two 45 degree connectors. We went with the 45 degree connectors as it will allow a greater flow of water from the display tank. PVC is somewhat easy to work with once you have connected a few pieces together. You must use PVC primer and then PVC glue to make a solid connec on between two pieces. The prier and glue will actually melt a part of the pipe and connector fusing it into one solid piece. It is most important to make sure, when you are gluing parts together, that you glue them with in the right posi on the first me. You will not get a second chance as the glue sets very quickly. For our return pump in our sump we selected a Quiet One 6000 as its reviews stated it was one of the more silent return pumps. We then connected the pump to the display tank with braded 1 inch flexible pipe. This is done for mul ple reasons, first to make maintenance easier on the pump, and secondly to make the vibra ons not transmit into the tank as easily. Once you wait at least 24 hours, for the PVC glue to be fully cured, the tank is now ready for the first drops of water to be entering. Once the tank and sump are to the appropriate level, we can finally test to make sure everything is 100% water ght. Like most killifish, the species exhibits sexual dimorphism. Male fish of the species are more colorful and larger than the females. This fish showed up at a recent local fish auc on, and I was fortunate to win the trio and take them home. I placed the trio in a temporary quaran ne tank, while I prepared a smaller, more permanent aquarium for the fish. A 2.5 gallon tank with a hamburg ma enfilter and a handful of najas grass makes a great home for these fish, and allows you to get a good glimpse of the fish too. The tank is located in my fish room and is heated to room temperature, which is usually degrees. A er about 3 weeks, I moved the fish to their more permanent tank. Breeding Tank Setup Sadly, even though the tank was covered, one of the females jumped through the 1/2cm gap and perished. A er the incident, I placed mini water le uce in the tank to deter any other acroba cs. All is well, because there has not been an accident since. These fish are easy to feed, since they readily accept flake and freeze dried worms and insects. They also get the occasional live blackworm too. The fish were not in their home long before I started to see the male flashing and showing his colors. Within a month of taking these beau es home, I no ced a few eggs among the plants. I wasn t sure if the fish needed peat or mops to spawn. So being the lazy aquarist that I am, in went a weighted mop. Now that there were eggs in the tank, the wonder of incuba on period started to come into ques on. The internet turned up many differing periods of me. Fishbase.org 1 states 5 months for this bo om spawning killie. One report from the UK notes that the eggs were peat incubated for 2 weeks2. The American Killifish Associa on, AKA, lists the following, Water incuba on takes around 3 weeks. If eggs are dried they take up to 6 months. 3 With such different reports, I decided to store some eggs in damp peat, and leave some in the tank. In this way, I assume I covered both bases, and would hopefully see some fry in the tank soon. I con nued to feed the parents twice a day, occasionally seeing some cour ng and breeding behaviors. Eggs were no ceable in the tank for at least two months before I no ced fry in the tank. I would es mate the first fry appeared late January, and that the fry I currently have are 2 3 weeks old. The fry are ea ng baby brine shrimp (BBS), crushed flake and golden pearls. I plan to transfer the fry to a larger 10 gallon aquarium once they are about 4 weeks old, to curb any cannibalism and prevent poor water quality. Once these fish are at an age of two months, I plan to turn some in for BAP points at my local fish club and trade or sell the remainder to local hobbyists.
