Our June end of year meeting and pot luck celebration was very successful. I hope everyone enjoyed their summer. Now, we have a lot of work to do before our upcoming annual show and auction and things are already underway. The new air system is being designed and made ready for the show. We are canvassing for our volunteers for the auction so anybody who wishes to help, please contact Ron. We have now secured our judges for the show. In June we had our annual elections the Executive listing is included in this newsletter. We hope to see everyone out at the show and auction. Note, all our show and auction forms are located on our website for downloading. 2008/2009 Show and Auction Dates Sept. 13 Sarnia Aquaria Society Show & Auction Sept. 28 London Aquaria Society Show & Auction Oct. 5 HDAS Show & Auction Oct. 26 KWAS Show & Auction London Aquaria Society P.O. 3 President s Message A new air system is under way for the show and auction as well a few modifications to the kitchen for the snacks and goodies. All help will be gratefully appreciated to get the whole event to run as smoothly as always. A big thank you in advance to all that will be there to lend a helping hand. Get well wishes are to be sent to Sharon MacDonald and Jerry Draper, they are both recovering from different bouts with surgery they had this summer. Thankfully both are on the mend and will be good as new in the future. We are getting ready to start the year at John Paul 2 for the meetings of the London Aquaria Society. The parking and lots of room entrance right by the front door. I hope with the new location all of us get to the meeting on time. With the club growing the way it has in the past few years a larger meeting place was a much needed as well as all the special added features that are also available. With the extra audio visual equipment we will have all the toys we will need for any guest speakers that are booked for the year The auction and fish show will be in full motion by the time of the first meeting. The jar show for this month will be Loaches, suckers and catfish. Also the open class and the plant class. I have heard a lot of good comments from the advertisers that they are seeing London Aquaria Society cards lot more this year and that makes them happy to see they are getting the support from the members, so don t be afraid to show that card and also introduce yourself to the shop owners. See their ads in the bulletin. Welcome back from the summer holidays Ron Bishop President London Aquaria Society Please Support the Southwestern Pet Centre 1641 Dundas Street (New Location Dundas & Saskatoon) London, ON They support us!!!

5 Macropodus concolor The Black Paradise Fish A BAP Report By Jim and Linda Brown (reprinted from the April 2005 issue of Tank Talk) Many years ago, a photo of these fish caught my eye and I looked forward to the day when they would be available. That photo showed a male showing off before a female. While his colours were not outstanding, the lace like pattern of the body and especially the fins made it a very desirable fish. Recently, a store had some for sale at a ridiculously high price, but that did not stop me from acquiring a pair. The Black Paradise is native to Southeast Asia, where it is found in sluggish, swampy bodies of water. They prefer water that is slightly acidic and in the F range. Their natural foods are insects and crustaceans, which are easily duplicated at home with frozen brine shrimp and bloodworms. A heavy growth of plants is necessary due to their shyness. Above all, a good cover is needed as they are excellent jumpers, something we found out the hard way. Spawning followed the pattern of most bubblenest builders. Males are about 4" long with extended rays on the dorsal, anal, and caudal fins. Females only reach about 3". Both sexes are a dirty brown in the body, but each scale is edged with black. The fins are a smoky blue and exhibit a spider web-like pattern, much more visible in the fins of the male. The pelvic fins are the brightest splash of colour, being a bright red. The female showed a yellow belly, due to the egg laden ovaries. Our pair was placed in a 10 gallon tank that had the surface covered with hornwort. A fluorescent light was on 24 hours a day, and filtration was done with a simple box filter filled with floss. The pair settled in and seemed to thrive on a diet of mosquito larvae and frozen bloodworms. Soon, they were paying a lot of attention to each other, with the male extending and spreading all his fins before the female. Unlike their close relative, Macropodus opercularis, (the paradise fish), the female was treated quite gently. Almost without warning, a bubblenest appeared that was the size of a nickel. As he displayed under the nest, the female would approach slowly, with her head down and all her fins folded. She would butt the male in the side upon which he would wrap his body around the female in a handshake embrace. A short tremor and the fertilized eggs would slowly drift down. The male was very exacting in catching all the eggs and placing them among the bubbles in the nest. This went on for several hours at which time the nest was more egg than bubble. The female was removed to a community aquarium where, the next day, she exhibited her fatal jumping skill. Since the female was now dead and there had been only one female in the dealer's tank, the spawn became much more important. The male was faithfully tending to the nest and eggs, and as soon as the fry were seen to be freeswimming, he was removed to a covered tank. The fry did quite well on their own, eating the natural infusorians for at least a week. Once newly hatched brine shrimp was added to their diet, their growth spurted, with some fry getting to 1/2" in size in a month. The largest fry would occasionally be seen with the tail of one of the smallest fry sticking out of their mouth. As gentle as the parents were, the fry appeared to be cannibalistic. We now have plenty of fry to assure us of additional pairs once they mature. This is a fish I would like to keep as a permanent resident of the fishroom. The wait was well worth it and the lacy fins are truly a sight to behold. 5
