From the Fish Room of the President Well fall is here at last. Now we can enjoy cooler weather, gawk at the amazing fall colors while reveling in the drama leading up to another Presidential election. I am running for president unopposed as far as I know, so we may not have much drama. We do not need drama but we do need to have as many people as possible running for all the board positions. Speaking of drama, the attention of the nations was upon us once again on September 25th as a result of the terrible call by one of the referees at the Green Bay Packers versus the Seattle Seahawks football game. That one bad call made the nation rise up and comment on the call that changed the outcome of the game. I think this influenced the ending the of the NFL referee strike. Many of us learned that if you weren t good in the lingerie football league as a referee you are not going to make it in the NFL. I shut down the pond early this year. I moved my koi back indoors and took along some swordtail fry that were born in the pond this summer. The Xenotoca Eiseni (red tailed goodeid) looked amazing as they often do after having spent a summer outdoors. The sunlight makes their bodies glisten with a bluish purple sheen and they show off that vibrant orange band at the base of the caudal peduncle. My pond was a little different this year because of the drought. I lost a noticeable amount of water to evaporation but I also had a bumper crop of pond plants. All that activity resulted in some dirty water and I felt compelled to do a water change, followed by a few water top offs in the next few weeks. I am glad I have a Japanese maple and a grand old oak tree to shade my pond without which I would have lost even more water. I am very pleased that the Milwaukee Aquarium Society has launched our CAP (Conservation Award program). Our program is based on the ACA CARES program, so please check out their site as well. A great big thank you to Rob McLure who is the chairperson for this program and everyone else that helped. I do ask everyone to please participate in this program, dedicate one or more tanks to a CAP species and pitch in any way you can. These fish are usually rare and unique in the hobby. Most importantly, they need your help, one tank is all it takes. It may be only one species in the world to you, but to that species you

are the world. That s a really powerful statement. It really makes you think about the world we live in and species conservation. Do your research on CAP or CARES species so you can have a good home for these special fish. A species only tank could be a good place to start to ensure that they get a good start in your home. They have enough competition in the world. Let s make it less competitive for them in their aquarium home. This year our club has more members than it has had in a few years and no matter who is elected president of the USA, I have a feeling our club is going to have a another great year. If you haven t already, please consider running for a board position this year, this is your chance to give back to the club in exchange for all the great fish, speakers and experiences you have enjoyed with the society. Being on the board, you will help steering and planning the club events. As I finish this article and a salmon and capers sandwich with an extra-large masala chai, one of my favorite breakfasts, my Nikon is charged and ready to go on a motorcycle ride on Hubertus road in the Holy Hill area amidst wonderful fall colors. Enjoy the weather folks, until next time. Austin Braganza President, Milwaukee Aquarium Society aka LIONFISH on the MAS forum

New Members by Jerry Michels Several new members have joined the club recently. Please join me in welcoming: Cathy Kozminski - three freshwater and planted tanks Ken Lahr - three freshwater tanks John and Jeri Helgestad - 29 fresh, salt or planted tanks and a pond Greet these people and ask them questions. They ll be happy to talk and they will probably have questions as well. (I am sorry if I missed anyone. Please let me know and we will announce your name the next time.) Our club is continuing to grow! Several new events are in the works. Come and see. Speakers for 2012 M.A.S. Meetings November: Matt Pederson - Breeding Marine Fish December: no meeting January: tbd Note from the Editor The article in the June 2012 edition of the SPLASH titled My Experience Keeping and Breeding P. taeniatus Moliwe was written by Scott Pedersen. Thank you Scott!

Breeding Pelvicachromis taeniatus (Moliwe) Rob McLure Pelvicachromis taeniatus are small cave spawning cichlids that inhabit the rivers of West Africa. They are quite similar to, but more colorful than the common krib, kribensis, or Pelvicachromis pulcher that can be found in most local fish stores. Pelvicachromis taeniatus is available to the hobbyist in several varieties or color morphs that are named based on the collection location in West Africa. The Moliwe variety is named after the village in Cameroon where it is commonly collected. The males of the Moliwe variety are quite striking with an overall tan or beige body with a cross hatched scale pattern, they have electric blue-green markings on the face and spotted tails and fins with dark reds and bright golds. The females when in breeding colors are even more colorful with a bright lemon yellow and black striped face, an intense lavender purple belly and beautiful gold striping in the dorsal fin. They are an impressive species even with only 2 in an aquarium. I was able to obtain a young adult pair of F1 P. taeniatus (Moliwe) at my Aquarium club s spring auction in early I didn t know a whole lot about them, but knew they needed soft water so I initially placed them in a 10 gallon quarantine tank with 75% RO water, and 25% tap. The quarantine had no gravel, but I put a couple overturned flower pots and one potted plant on the bottom for some comfortable hiding places. They fed immediately on small live and frozen worms, live baby brine shrimp and flake food. About a week later I added some wild caught Hyphessobrycon heterohabdus tetras that were a good size (for tetras anyways). I thought they would make good dither fish. I knew the setup needed to be bigger and I know Cichlids like substrate so I started setting up a 20 gallon tank for this group of fish. When I had it all set up I moved all the tetras and the P. taeniatus pair to their new accommodations. It had a silica sand mixed with gravel substrate, more breeding caves and was sparsely planted with tall plants. I used the same water mixture as before to keep the hardness down. Some water tests done a few months later showed a PH of 6.5, KH of 20 ppm and a GH of 30 ppm. So generally it was an acidic and soft water environment. The Moliwe s had left me a surprise in their quarantine tank, they had spawned and I was able to catch about 12 fry. They must have been just

hatched and were extremely small. I tried to raise them myself, but alas, I m not a good cichlid parent, and I lost that first batch. About a month later in their 20 gallon home they would spawn again. This time there were over 60 fry. They were well guarded by the parents. The male Moliwe regularly made an entire circle of the tank and made sure the tetra s stayed high in the water well away from his fry. After about 2 weeks the fry began to really venture out. At first in one big cloud, and then spread out. For about 1 week I noticed an odd pattern where every day the mother would guard exactly 13 fry on her own, right in front of the tank, while the father would take the rest all the way to the back. They would scavenge for food all day like that, and then report back to their flowerpot cave home every night like clockwork. It was fun to watch. They ate well on microworms, baby brine shrimp, and after the 2 nd week crushed flake. They grew quickly and have started to show sexual dimorphism already at about 50 days. I would recommend this fish to anyone that wants to try cichlids, even a first timer. They are a fun and beautiful species.

BAP - The Basics by Jerry Michels What is BAP? BAP stands for Breeders Award Program. What is the purpose of the BAP? - to encourage members of the aquarium society to breed fish and share knowledge concerning the spawning and rearing of fish - to recognize the achievements of society members concerning the breeding of fish - to promote an interest in and make available a wide variety of fish - to enable more members to be active participants in the society How does one get started? - obtain a breeding pair / group of fish - spawn them - 45 days after hatching / emerging, bring six fry to the next club meeting for auction What else does one need? - get a spawning report sheet from Andy Hudson before you bring the fish to the meeting - Andy can provide additional information regarding points for awards, etc. What else should I know? - the six fish you bring in are a donation to the club - indicate on the sign-in sheet at the meeting that you brought in a bag of fish - this gives you credit for the Christmas Party funny money auction.

HAP - The Basics by Jerry Michels The purpose of HAP - Horticulture Awards Program, is to promote and encourage the keeping and captive propagation of aquatic plants, including; to gather and disseminate information about their cultivation and propagation methods, to ensure the availability of a variety of aquatic plant species for future generations of aquatic hobbyists, and to recognize the achievements of the program participants. An aquatic plant is a plant species which in the wild or natural state can be found growing in the submerged or floating form as a normal occurrence at some time during the course of a complete growing season. Floating plants are considered submerged if they are not taking root in a substrate. An aquatic plant can be from fresh, brackish, or salt water environments. Only aquatic plants are eligible for HAP. Micro algae are not eligible, but plants raised in an outdoor pond are. Propagation of aquatic plants can be in the form of the following: Vegetative - the asexual reproduction by natural means or with human intervention. This includes but is not limited to cuttings (from leaves, roots, stems, etc.) budding (plant lets and bulb lets) division runners layering micropropagation Blooms - points are earned by bringing any aquatic plant into flower. The flower does not have to be submitted. The participant can either photograph the flower or have Aaron Glass verify it.

Sexual Reproduction - points earned by raising plants from seeds produced by blooms grown by the entrant on their own plant after acquiring it. Procedure: 1. Get a propagation / flowering report from Aaron Glass 2. Aaron can answer your questions or give you any needed materials 3. Indicate at the sign-in sheet at the meeting that you brought in a plant. It will be auctioned off as a club donation and you will earn points for the Christmas Party funny money auction. HAPPY FLOWERING!

MAS Exchanges In case you missed my presidential article, we launched the Conservation Award Program (CAP) at the September general meeting, CAP continues the theme of acronyms like BAP and HAP. If you have not already please research CAP species and please save a species, dedicate at least one tank in your fish room and spread the word about endangered species and conservation of ecosystems around the world. Please sign up for the Milwaukee aquarium society elections, this is your chance to give back to the society. Here are some articles that I found interesting while reading through the exchanges July / August Cichlidae Communique publication of the Pacific Coast Cichlid Association. The front cover has an impressive close up photograph of a male Dimidichromis compressiceps taken by Jim Ellenberger. In the same issue A Tanganyika Cichlid Paradise Nkondwe Island September ; Reflections: On Aggression by Ron Coleman in Cichlid Blues the newsletter of the Pacific Coast Cichlid Association. Ron discusses theories past and present on the topic of species aggression and whether or not it is a species trait, some locked in the genetic code of the animal. Stores or people often label a species as community or aggressive, but the subject is indeed a complex one. An often heard question is, can I keep this fish with that the answer is not always so simple or quick. I try to encourage species only tanks where possible. Make sure there are always hiding places for every fish including a few extra spots.there are always exceptions to the rule and often the circumstances or context as Ron describes it is the key to what aggressive behavior we may or may not observe. In an aquarium fish do not always have the option to avoid a confrontation because of the lack of space and limited food sources. Keep in mind fish we think of as aggressive may be a mother trying to protect young or set up a nesting site or a young male trying to set up a nest to attract a female to fulfill their main and often only agenda, namely propagation of their species by passing on their genetic code. The Last Word by Kevin Plazak 2012 September Cichlid Blues the newsletter of the Pacific Coast Cichlid Association. Kevin starts with a bit of cichlid humor, A cichlid flops into a bar then he describes the lessons he learned while trying to get the Nicaraguan cichlid (Hypsophrys nicaraguense aka Nicks) to breed. These cichlids lay eggs in mud tubes along the banks, their eggs are non adhesive but

these were not the issues. It is their awareness of their environment that makes it tricky, and so we are on to the topic of dither fish and how the Nicks sense potential threats around them by observing and reacting to the behavior of the species around them much like we would react to a flocks of birds sound warning cries of approaching predators in a forest. Schooling species like tiger barbs, giant Danios or large rainbows could fill this roll. Once the Nicks feel safe enough or they feel the threat level is appropriate, they could venture out for a bite or get down to the business of spawning. Medication by John Baad from the Sept.,Oct.,Nov., Dec., 2012 Aquatic Forum, the newsletter of the SCALES (Stark County Aquatic Life Enthusiasts Society), Ohio. John writes about medications in the aquarium hobby and is his fish room. He advises that an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of care and that is why he tries to keep his tanks as clean as possible, however he does keep medications on hand just in case. In case disaster strikes he would like to reserve the rights to make use of all the modern medicine he can and he hopes that we can retain the rights and liberties to continue to buy and use medications for our fish. The Aquatic Gardener s Association (AGA) Annual Convention will be held in St, Louis, MO from November 1-4th this year. Some of us will be attending, this is a great opportunity to attend since it is within driving distance, and I invite you to join us or at the least check out their website and especially the tank decorating competition pictures. Until next time folks, may you and your fish live long and prosper, Austin Braganza Exchange Editor Milwaukee Aquarium Society

Speaker: Jim Gasior spoke on the topic of Killifish. Killis are some of the most beautiful tropical fish available but not many people are familiar with them. These fish cannot be mass produced in fish farms and thus are a true hobbyist s fish. This has resulted in limited availability and much mis-information about them. Here are some general guidelines for Killis: lots of variety - originating from killis (ponds) across the world, there are hundreds of varieties, ranging from 1 to 8 long. easy to maintain - 2 1/2 gallon aquarium, sponge filter, room temperature, room lighting, cover the aquarium! They prefer soft, acidic water but are very adaptable to most conditions. They live two to three years and most do not like flake food. easy to breed - lay eggs daily on yarn mops (simulates floating plants) which can be removed to hatch and grow out. These eggs can actually be sent through the mail to another hobbyist! interesting to learn about - all natural strains... very little cross breeding, names can be a challenge to learn, but are very descriptive. Thank you Jim for a very enlightening talk.
