3 3 President s Message Louis Kinney Howdy All!! Welcome to the season of the Central New York Aquarium Society! I will be your president this term. I look forward to working with everyone. I am sure the question at the forefront of everyone's mind is: Who the shellfish is Louis Kinney?? Well, let me answer that question briefly. Hello, I am Louis Kinney. There, any further questions? :-) Seriously though, I would still consider myself a noob to CNYAS as I have only been a member for 3 years now. Last year, I was the person in charge of public relations and donations. For as long as I can remember I have had some kind of fish, usually at least 1 betta. I am a huge animal fan. For more information about me, I would much rather anybody asked me rather then me talking about myself. I am an open book so feel free to ask me anything you would like. This year I will do everything I can to continue the greatness of our previous presidents. Let s continue to work together to make this the best group of fish heads anywhere!! Now back to your regularly scheduled program. Attention!! The bus trip to the Mystic Aquarium that had tentatively been scheduled for September 24th has been postponed! The trip will be discussed at the September 14th Board Meeting. More info will follow. Please stay tuned.

6 6 Know Your Apple Snails By Valerie O'Neil The term apple snail is more generic than many realize. Apple snail refers to all snails within the Family Ampullariidae. This family then splits into 7 to 10 genera (the exact divisions are subject of some debate) and eventually into many separate species. Most commonly, in the aquarium trade we see 2 very different sorts of Ampullariidae: First is the "Giant Colombian Ramshorn" snail. These look similar in shape to the common "pest" Planorbidae type Ramshorns but grow much larger and are commonly yellow or tan with dark stripes following the top of their cinnamon bun shaped spiral. This is not, however, what most people think of when the term Apple snail is used, but yet, they are in fact apple snails. Second we come to the snails which generally spring to mind when the term apple snail is used. These are some of the members of genus Pomacea. This is where many people do not see the importance of distinction between the species, the main reason to know is one common type is a (and in fact several uncommon ones are) highly invasive and regulated pest species, while the other is an unregulated, generally considered far more desirable, and currently as yet unregulated aquarium resident. The problem is when we as hobbyists are indifferent to what makes these species different we risk fines for selling and or shipping, or even regulations that will ban all Pomacea from trade to prevent the accidental, or occasionally purposeful, spread of the invasive types which will prevent everyone from enjoying these large and interesting aquarium snails. In our aquariums we are most likely to see P. canaliculata or P. diffusa. There are several other more uncommon species but for the sake of brevity I will focus mostly on just these two and how to tell one from the other. Pomacea canaliculata, often abbreviated to P. cana. is federally regulated. It is against the law to move them across state lines without a special permit. Some states restrict their trade even further or have banned their trade completely. P. cana get far larger than Pomacea diffusa some as large as softballs. The shell shape also differs with the area between the operculum (opening) and the shell whorls having an indent so the angle made there is less than 90 degrees. One of the biggest tells is the color of the eggs that they lay. The eggs of both types are large masses laid above the water line. The eggs of P. canaliculata

7 7 will be orange, red, or dark pink in color (some similar species have greenish eggs). P. canaliculata is the species that is typically referred to simply as "Apple Snails" in trade. Pomacea diffusa on the other hand is the species commonly sold in pet shops as the "Mystery Snail." They are found in the subtropical waters all over South America. P. diffusa is the only similar species to P. cana without any federal restriction. They are sometimes misidentified as being P. bridgeseii which is an uncommon member of Ampullariidae found in mountain streams of the Western USA which many believe has never been part of the aquarium trade. The species comes in many colors, grows 1.5-2" on average with some individuals reaching 2.5". They have a flat area at the top of the operculum, this, with the edge of the shell, create a 90 degree angle. This species lays an egg mass which is an off white, pale peach, or grey color. For anyone interested in learning much more about the different species of Pomacea, other types of Ampullariidae, and their care, I highly recommend checking out applesnail.net for the most comprehensive resource I have yet come across on the subject. I'm not affiliated with the site in any way, I am just one who appreciates them for having compiled such a large amount of information on the diverse subject. This is actually a genus of fish which consists of more than 40 species of fish. These killis are annual breeders due to being found in tropical and sub tropical parts of east and southeast Africa. All species and sub species have one main thing in common: their habitats dry completely, or in some rare cases partially, on an annual or semi-annual basis. Nothos will deposit their eggs in a substrate commonly made up of fine sticky black mud at the bottom of pools of water where the water quickly disappears at the end of the rainy season. The eggs will dry out with the mud but when the rainy season begins again and the eggs get wet, they will begin their hatching process. As general description goes, they have slightly compressed elongated bodies with the anal and dorsal fins set well back and wide caudal fins with a round edging. Their coloration varies from pink, white, silver, maroon, red to orange, yellow and many other colors. With their life cycle, these killis are known to only live about 1 year. The AKA has a list of most known Nothos with their species listed and a lot of good information on their website.

Badge #4: Technology and Information Barracuda From the creation of the printing press to the electronic doodads of today, the aquarium hobby would be a little different without information technology. Are you a tech and info barracuda? Your aquarium library of books or magazines can fill at least one good-sized shelf, if not an entire bookcase You ve seen every episode of Tanked and Fishtank Kings You subscribe to aquarium-related blogs and/or podcasts You like fish stores, follow them on Twitter, and post pictures of your aquariums on Instagram (or whatever other fishrelated social media activities you participate in) You can discuss the finer points of a variety of aquarium games You ve bred fish on the internet and submitted them to CNYAS for award program points...
