1 President: Vice President: Secretary: Treasurer: Tony Wathen Willie Powell Eddie Atherton Edna McCrady P.O. Box 6001 Owensboro, KY Owensboro Photography Club Newsletter (March 2014) Greetings all, and welcome to another fabulous edition of the OPC newsletter. The main event is in two parts this month. Our presenters are Edna McCrady and Allen Campbell Edna will show us some of her Tobacco Project Photos And Allen will present some of his Underwater Photos At the beginning, I saw the tobacco seeds, and they were about the size of a pinhead. And I said to myself, I ve seen coffee grounds bigger than that. They must be a dwarf variety, because no seed that small can produce a full sized tobacco plant. But sure enough, as the season went on, the plants got bigger and bigger, and finally matured into the full sized ones I was familiar with. Edna will be showing vivid photos of their development, sure to be eye catching, and enjoyable. A few years back, I did the pool club thing, and because they kept closing, I was a member of three clubs in as many years. One of my favorite things to do was to put on a pair of goggles, and swim down for bright, shiny coins at the bottom of the diving well. Allen has taken that a bit further. He has gone in the water a bit deeper than a swimming pool, and he has taken his camera with him, to show you a part of the planet that is a world unto itself. Things that don t exist on dry land,
2 you ll see flourishing in the water. You ll see things in striking clarity, that you may not have known were there. Join Allen as he and his camera go below the surface, to give you a tour of the aquatic world. This month s meeting is at the usual place and time. And that is, downtown at the Museum of natural science and history, at 7:00 PM. Now on to the February contest winners. Monthly Contest Spring to me conjures up many images. I can imagine washing the car with a dripping wet sponge that has soapy foam hanging from it like a big white beard, the warmth of the sun as it melts away the remnants of an icy, snowy, cold winter, and of course, flowers breaking through the ground, pushing up, and getting ready to make vibrant blooms in the wake of a long, cold winter. And the flower part is what our first place photo is all about. Elmon Coe found a group of daffodils just beginning to sprout and he s our first place winner for February. Hats off to Elmon Coe for his photo titled Daffodils. Daffodils by Elmon Coe
3 And now in the second place spot, it s not a small size foot, or a petite size foot, or a tiny size foot, or a medium size foot, or an average size foot, or a run of the mill sized foot... It s a BIG foot. Hats off to Eddie Atherton for his photo titled Big Foot. Big Foot by Eddie Atherton Finally, in the HM spot, this time it IS a smaller foot. Kudos to Eddie Atherton for his photo titled... Here Come the Kids Again.
4 Congratulations Eddie. For March the theme is Portrait - Animals If you have a dog, or a cat, or other animal, or know where you can find one, zoom in, and take a portrait for this month s contest. entries to OPCaltair.digital2013@picasaweb.com Other Items Portfolio Judging The portfolios have been judged, and the winners were announced at the February meeting Receiving first place honors was Allen Campbell for his portfolio filled with the things that give us humans wings. Airplanes. (I tried flapping my arms, but no luck). Congratulations Allen. And there s a $50 dollar prize that goes with it. Second place went to Erica Roberts for her portfolio with things that need water, sunshine, and fertilizer. The theme for her portfolio was plants and flowers. Congratulations Erica. And there s a free 2014 membership that goes with it. Third place went to Ron Stauffer for an exceptional portfolio done in black and white (and shades of grey). Congratulation everyone!
