Koi Ahoy Volume 30 Number 16 April, 2015 Jean Jahr, President Bob Haugland, Editor Pauline Sakai, Photos April 26 Meeting Place Has Changed We ll Now Meet at the Pond of Pauline Sakai in Roseville. The photo below is Pauline s pond. Besides the magnificent pond, Pauline and her mom, Lilly, are Master Gardeners. That s not just what we call them because they grow stuff, they have degrees from UCD. Stroll the grounds and experience what I mean.
Koi Ahoy, April, 2015 page 2 Our March Meeting was at the home of Reed Rodriguez, aka Select Koi, in Elk Grove. Reed set up two tanks of 8 Tosai for us to choose from, about fish. Thus began our grow out contest. Reed and his family measured and photographed every fish purchased but only the first eight are officially part of the grow out contest. Here they are in the order purchased. #1 Jerry, 8.75 #2 Sandy, 8.25 #3 Rafael, 9 #4 Sam, 9 #5 Pauline, 8 #6 Janet, 7.5
Koi Ahoy, April, 2015 page 3 #7 Georgia, 8.5 & 7 #8 Bob, 7.75 #9 Janet, 8 There are 15 photos but some have two fish in them, 19 fish in total. We drew numbers to see who would pick the first fish. Jerry (#1) picked first and Bob (#8) drew last. Then the order reversed if you wanted to buy another fish. Bob only wanted one fish so Georgia picked her second fish right away. That s why there are two fish in Georgia s photo. The total length of grow is the determining factor. An 8 fish that grows to 12 (4 of growth) will win out over a 9 fish that grows to 12 ½ (3 ½ of growth). As of right now we don t know when the contest will end. It could be this fall, it could be next spring, stay tuned #10 Pauline, 7.5 #11 Sam, 9 #12 Jerry, 9
Koi Ahoy, April, 2014 page 4 #13 Sam, #14 Pauline, 8.5 & 8.75 #15 Janet, 7.75 & & 8.25 Big Plans for 2015 Have you paid your 2015 dues yet? It s only $30. Those who aren t paid by March will have to be dropped from the roster. We don t want to lose you. You can make a check out to Camellia Koi Club and mail it to Georgia Vonk, 881 Greenridge Ct., Lincoln, CA You can also use PayPal via our website at or just hand it to Georgia at any meeting. June we are hosts to the Annual AKCA Business Meeting & Wet Lab at the Hilton Garden Inn, in Natomas. CKC is not paying for this, AKCA is. All we are doing is arranging things for our out of town guests. Some people are still unclear as to where the hotel is. It s west of I- 5, south of W. El Camino, north of Discovery Park. CKC members get a price break on the wet lab. It s only $25! Now is the time to register for this. See p. 53 of the March/April Koi USA. More information will be available at the CKC meeting, or contact Jean Jahr. ( Org) Sam Niebank is our 2015 Koi Person of the Year. Sam s list of contributions to the club include Pond Tour & Koi Show Chair, Groupon research, Web Master, and Koi Rescue.

Koi Ahoy, April, 2015 page 6 We are moving the April meeting site to Pauline s Pond because Jack Lokoff suffered a heart attack a few weeks ago. As a result, Jack has also undergone heart bypass surgery. We wish Jack a speedy recovery. Ours hearts go out to Juliet as well. She will have her hands full taking care of Jack for a few weeks. Next Meeting, April 26 at the Pond of Pauline Sakai in Roseville Regarding the upcoming meeting mom and I have been discussing food for the meeting. We will be serving a lasagna and kale frittata and homemade sushi if mom feels up to it. If the membership can help out with a salads, desserts and other things that go with it that ll be great. We will as usual be providing beverages. If you are in need of a Speaker, I can fill in. I m putting together a talk about Vegetable Gardening during the Drought for and upcoming KCRA3 garden segment so I can talk about that. Let me know so I can prepare. Also, for the newsletter you can say things like: Being an avid Do- It- Yourselfer (DIY), Pauline built her own koi pond and deck. These were featured in an 1995 Sunset Magazine issue. Pauline and her mom Lilly, both Master Gardeners, have been featured in various local newspaper regarding their gardening endeavors. Purchased in 1982, this one acre lot started with a blank slate of weeds and scrub trees and is now a gardener s haven, friendly to bees, butterflies and birds. Pauline has been a member of the Camellia Koi Club since Pauline and Lilly are looking forward to visiting with all the fellow members. Please park next door at 2111 Baseline Road. (Park against the fence, close to the street.) As usual, the Board meets at noon & all are welcome to sit in. The General Meeting & Pot Luck is at 1pm. Don t forget your camera and a folding chair, and here s your link to a google map: ,17z/data=!4m13!1m4!3m3!1s0x809b211d15eaa681:0xad04d5b3 ed48d422!2s2151+baseline+rd,+roseville,+ca+95747!3b1!4m7!1m0!1m5!1m 1!1s0x809b211d15eaa681:0xad04d5b3ed48d422!2m2!1d !2d

AKCA convention report: Wet lab and meeting for the KHA show, rooms still need to be reserved. Anyone having questions towards the convention, please contact Jean. Calendar Update: For the June meeting there was a discussion on having an educating lesson on the importance of salt in the water and how to apply and the amount to apply. Why we would even use salt. By Jerry & Bob. Mike would like to see if we could look into having our July meeting at a person s home that has a beautiful Koi Pond with lots of exotic animals. Location is in Auburn and name is Ceronex. Mike is going to try and get permission from the owner and will get back to us on the outcome. Koi Show: Sam and Kim have been hard at work trying to find a location suitable for our Koi Show. Location, parking and large enough to accommodate all of our needs. Sam would like to have a meeting in a Few weeks and would like to have volunteers to come forward and call him ASAP. Koi person of the year awards for 2014: We need to nominate a person for the year that has been of great help and aid in the club. 8 Koi Ahoy, April, 2015 page 8 This is Henrietta. She built her nest on the light fixture over our pond. We could watch and take pictures from inside the house. She laid two little jelly bean size eggs 5 days apart and a couple of weeks later they both hatched on the same day. (?) She would leave occasionally and come back and cram that beak down their little throats and feed them. Then she d sit on them for a while more, keeping them warm. After a little more than a week, Sean & Gus were already too big to sit on. Henrietta would always come back and cram her beak down theirs and pump food into their little bellies. Then she d clean house, picking hummer poo out of the nest and spitting it out. Some would stick to the light fixture, some would stick to the patio, and some even landed in the pond. Then she d fly off and return again in about an hour. The nest is made of spider webs, with lichen on the outside for camouflage. As Gus & Sean grew, the nest would stretch to accommodate them. At three weeks old, they d stand on the edge of the nest and flap their tiny wings. At age 23 days, they both flew off L. They stayed in the neighborhood for about a week and Mom would still find them and bring them food.
