We need an accurate head count for them and will be requesting a show of hands of those that will be attending at the meeting at the Masters on the 20 th. Make plans to attend it will be a good time for all. 2

5 2014 Grow out Competition 2014 FCKC Sanke Grow-Out Reminder All were siblings from the same spawn and parent fish, and approximately 5-6 inches long. A total of nine club members selected their fish after careful review and comparison, with a simple drawing determining the order of choice beforehand. Our selections were made as follows: 1) Alina and Howard Bowen 2) David and Karen Hardcastle 3) Glenn Fontan 4) Suzette and Willie Alexander 5) Don and Dale Whaley 6) Mary and Bob Cook 7) Darla and Doug Stuber 8) Libby and Jim Mattingly 9) Mark and Michelle Masters Here s hoping we see all nine koi, big and healthy, go on display at the FCKC Show this October. Remember, there will be a special category out competition, presided over by our AKJA Judges, to single out and honor the best of our 2014 Grow-Out. 4

6 From the VP Libby Mattingly I want to thank everyone that attended last month s meeting at Glen and Amy s home. We had a wonderful presentation from Dr. Carolina Le-Bert on the surgery that was done on our Yamabuki. I think we managed to video most of the presentation but my daughter Jessica has not had time to get it transferred for me. Hopefully soon and we will be able to show it again. I want to remind everyone again of the upcoming show! As if you would forget!! We will again be having a pot luck on Friday evening for the judges, exhibitors, vendors and faithful show workers. We do ask that our members bring a side dish. Please contact me and let me know what you can bring. Our caterer will be doing the pulled pork again and hopefully we will have enough leftovers to do lunch once more on Saturday and Sunday. I really do need to get verification from everyone that will be helping at the show to make sure we have all avenues covered. Set up will be on Thursday October 9th at noon at the site. We have tanks to setup, air lines, tent, vendor spaces, and to make sure the banquet room is in shape. I ll be calling you if you don t call me first!! Suzette has gotten the trophies taken care of and is busy with donations for the evening raffle at the banquet. Last year we had some great pond items including a pump and lots of koi food. If you did not attend, I recommend that you do so this year. 5

7 Continued From the VP Libby Mattingly This is the best way to show support of our club whether you show fish or not. Plus, you get the opportunity to bid on items for a reduced price! Don will be including Carolina s price list in the newsletter for everyone to keep on hand. She is very knowledgeable and can help in many ways. I am also going to see if she could come up with phone consultation pricing but I know it s hard to do because when you realize something is wrong it can almost be too late. She has also sent me a link to a better than clove oil anesthesia. Those of us who use clove oil, this is probably a better way to go. Hopefully I can copy that correctly! Look forward to seeing everyone at the September meeting on the 20th at 5PM at Mark and Michelle Masters home. Please remember to RSVP and bring a side dish. One more item. 8 Roving Reporter Alina Howard Glass-wing butterflies live in South America. A butterfly with transparent wings is rare and beautiful. As delicate as finely blown glass, the presence of this rare tropical gem is used by jungle observers as an indication of high habitat quality. Rivaling the refined beauty of a stained glass window, the translucent wings of the Glass wing butterfly shimmer in the sunlight like polished panes of turquoise, orange, green, and red. All things beautiful do not have to be full of color to be noticed. In life, that which is unnoticed has the most power. 7
