1 Koi Ahoy Volume 26 Number 8 August, 2015 Jean Jahr, President Bob Haugland, Editor Pauline Sakai, Photos Sausage Fest at Ceronix, July 26 The first thing you see is the moat that circles half of the building. It s actually the 500,000 gallon pond. Then you see the birds, mostly exotics or endangered. To see the koi you have to wait for them to come close to the surface. In the photo below, Don Whittaker, Ceronix owner, triggers an automatic feeder, and the crowd goes wild So you don t know how many koi you have because it s over 60 and you can t count them? Don thinks he has over Since waterfowl and koi share the same pond and produce copious amounts of waste, biofilters have been added, (bottom left). Reducing the ammonia, nitrites, and nitrates hasn t solved the algae problem so plans are in the works to reduce phosphates by regular water change outs via watering the landscaping with pond water. Ceronix has its own well water source and solar electricity so expenses are nil. Our gracious host not only gave us an in depth tour of the pond, sanctuary, and plant, he opened the lunch room so we could eat in air conditioned comfort. Thanks, Don

About three dozen sausagers were consumed by almost as many Festerers, with all the fixins, desert, and drinks. Ceronix provided the grill and propane. Again, thanks Ceronix Next Meeting, August Duane & Melody s Pond, 8725 Spooner Court, Granite Bay Ice Cream Social and Koi Auction All the usual stuff applies: The Board meets at noon and you re invited to sit in. The regular meeting and/or food start around 1pm. Bring your folding chair. The main course for the pot luck is ICE CREAM. Duane & Melody will provide some wonderful home made ice cream and therefore the pot luck part is all of the fixins. Sprinkles, nuts, whipped cream, bananas, strawberries, butterscotch, ad infinitum. Or you could bring a side dish, salad, or even pie. Pie goes good with ice cream. the Carsons and let them know what you re bringing. dc.huatulco@yahoo.com Here s your link to a Google Map: ,17z/data=3m14b14m23m11s0x809ae2229da8247f:0x8acf43ade30c4e7c The Koi Auction There are some rules to follow 1. You must be a Camellia Koi Club member to sell. Annual membership is only $30 2. You don t have to be a member to buy. (Bring your friends) 3. If you are the top bidder, you pay Camellia Koi Club. CKC gets ½ and the seller gets ½. 4. NEW: You can pay cash or check, or VISA 5. You must bring your fish in a bag, no buckets or mason jars please. If you bring two or more fish in the same bag, the bag will be auctioned as one item. 6. Don t bring diseased or injured fish. 7. Oxygen will be added to your bag, if necessary. 8. NEW: You may write a Reserve Bid on your bag. That s the minimum/starting bid, or No Sale. 9. In the unlikely event that your fish doesn t sell, you must take it home.
3 Koi Ahoy, August, 2015 page 3 This Will Be the Biggest CKC Koi Auction, Ever. Scuttlebutt is that there will be lots of koi up for grabs. John Gillespie and myself will be bringing some young koi. Sam will be bringing some larger specimens from his collection. Sam wants to put a reserve bid on at least one fish. Bob and Sandy Mascadri are downsizing their pond and will be bringing some high quality fish too. (I ll have to bring my checkbook because I may go home with more fish than I brought.) Tips on Bagging & Transporting Fish 1. Do not feed for 5 days prior to transport. (August 26) This will help keep the bag from filling with fish poo, lessen the ammonia build up in the bag, and maybe even keep your fish from developing stress from motion sickness. 2. Use a bag big enough for the fish to stretch out in. 3. Use only enough water to cover the dorsal fin. This will leave more space for air/oxygen. The more air space, the longer the fish can breathe in the bag. 4. Use the same water that the fish has been living in. You can add a few grains of salt to help calm the fish. You can also add some AmQuell or other ammonia neutralizing additive, read the label. My bottle says 10 drops per gallon. 5. Trap as much air in the top of the bag as you can. It may take more than one try. Twist the top of the bag to seal the air, double that over, and secure that with a rubber band. Use a fresh rubber band or even two. Make note of what time it is. With only atmosphere in the bag, you re good for 2-4 hours. With oxygen you re good for all day. Duane will add oxygen when you arrive, if needed. 6. Put the bag in an empty ice chest and close the lid. Second best would be a cardboard box. These will support the bag and keep the fish in the dark. If the fish can t see, he won t be as freaked out. It would also be a good idea to include an ice pack to keep the bag cool. The Transport Home To get your new prize home, put your bag o fish in your cooler or cardboard box, along with the ice pack into your car. Secure the prize so he won t flop around when you slam on the brakes. Maybe even position him so that he s sideways and can t bump his nose during accelerating and braking. Keep him out of direct sunlight and cover him well so he s in the dark. Maybe even play the radio for him. Some smooth jazz, he ll like that. At home float the bag in the pond or quarantine tank to acclimate the temperature of the bag water to the pond water. About 30 minutes might be enough unless it s a giant bag, then longer. The idea here is to get the bag slowly to within 2-4 degrees of the pond. Do not open the bag yet Do not open the bag until you re ready to release the fish. Inside the sealed bag the ph and the ammonia are at safe levels. Once you open the bag and expose the water to atmosphere, the ammonia built up in the bag will reach toxic levels and elevated carbon dioxide will cause a ph crash. Don t put the bagged water in you pond. It s the wrong ph and it s full of ammonia. Once the bag is open, grab the fish with your hands and lift him out into the pond. One hand close to the tail and the other hand over his eyes. Again, if he can t see, he ll be less freaked out. Hot Tip: Support the bag either by putting it in a container or maybe roll the edges down most of the way, or just let it float in the pond. I knew a guy (not me) who just set the bag on the edge of the pond and when he (not me) let go of the top of the bag it just collapsed. The former occupant of the bag went flippity flopping across the patio with the freaked out guy (not me) hippity hopping across the patio after the slippery little devil. Freaky caught up with Flippity a few feet later only to let Flippity slip out of his hands and continue to flip- flop across the patio. So now Freaky is following Flippity by doing a Chuck Berry Duck Walk across the patio in a kind of choreographed routine. (You can almost hear Yaketty Sax playing in the background.) About feet later a positive capture is realized and Freaky panics and tosses Flippity 12 feet through the air, into the pond. (It wasn t me)

One of the major reasons people seek us out and join us is because they have a new pond and they want to learn about what to do to keep their pond alive. This is not a new concept. Formerly it was called Ramblings and This month in the Koi Pond. This time I m calling it Koi Pond 101. Each month we ll publish a short, one page b lurb about something pertaining to what a new Koi Person might need to know. I m hoping to draft some of the new KHA s to do some of the writing so that you don t always get my bent or writing style on every topic. We have assembled a few topics already: Feeding Nutrition Water Chemistry Pond Supplies First Aid Seasonal Maintenance Anatomy Algae Temperature Pond Load Fish Handling Since each KP 101 will b e short and basic in nature, our hope is that it will encourage a question/answer segment at each meeting, along with suggestions for further topics. For those of you that might have more advanced questions or problems there are two options; psychotherapy or contact a Camellia Koi Club Koi Health Advisor. Find one on the list and call or . If the KHA can t answer your question right away, he/she has the references and contacts to find an answer for you and get back to you.
