4 President s Message Hello Everyone. It was a wonderful CAOAC convention-this year. There were many guests from Europe, U.K and United States. A great time was had by all. Finally, it s pond season and time to be outside. This is the time when I like to take tanks outside and give them a good scrub. Putting fish outside for the summer is not just limited to the koi and goldfish. You can have your guppies and swords in a barrel on the balcony. Get outside and enjoy the season! Save the date- Rachael O Leary is speaking June 9 at PRAC. This is a don't miss talk. Very enjoyable. Rachael is a wonderful and informative speaker that is not to be missed. Happy June! Nancy Egelton CAOAC President

10 Habitats Invasive Species Case Study Fanwort CABOMBA CAROLINIANA Fanwort (Cabomba caroliniana) is a hardy invasive plant that originates primarily from regions with warm, humid, subtropical climates such as those found in southeastern regions of North America and northeastern South America. It is a fully submerged aquatic plant with the exception of a white or pale yellow flower that floats on the water's surface. Because of its high popularity as an aquarium plant, it has been cultivated in Asia and the south east of the United States for commercial use and has been dispersed in many parts of the world. Although it originates from regions with warm, temperate climates, it can survive in below-freezing temperatures. Today in North America it can be found in over 30 states and was first reported in southern Ontario in Cabomba caroliniana Photo : Ana Fanwort thrives best in stagnant and slow flowing environments such as lakes, small rivers, streams and ditches. It is a perennial plant that spreads via vegetative reproduction through stem fragments or rhizomes. In the proper environment, fanwort grows rapidly and becomes a very persistent and competitive invader by producing large amounts of plant material that form dense stands and eventually overtake native aquatic plants, obstruct drainage canals and hinder aquatic recreational activities such as swimming and boating. Decomposition of this abundant plant material results in significant reductions in dissolved oxygen levels necessary for survival of fish and other organisms and causes foul odours in the water. Fanwort can be easily spread by watercraft or other equipment, etc., that pick up stem fragments and disperse them to new locations, as well as by water currents. Because of its persistence and potential for spread, fanwort is very difficult to control. Various methods, including mechanical removal, reducing water levels by draining to dry out the plants (fanwort requires permanent shallow water to survive), shading of areas to reduce sunlight and application of chemical herbicides, have been used but either only provide temporary results or can only be employed under specific conditions. Preventive measures remain the best means of controlling its spread. These measures include washing down of boats, watercraft and other aquatic equipment that circulate in infested areas, only draining aquarium water on dry land and not into natural waters, drainage ditches or sewers and, when possible, returning or donating unwanted aquarium plants to a pet store or school. For more detailed information on this invasive aquatic plant, contact: Global Invasive Species Database; Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters; Ontario's Invading Species Awareness Program Source:

14 What is CAOAC? We are often asked this question. CAOAC stands for The Canadian Association of Aquarium Clubs. We are a non-profit corporation and are composed of member aquarium, reptile & amphibian, pond & water garden, and similar clubs or societies from across Canada and the Northeast United States. CAOAC was founded in 1959 (incorporated in 1963) to allow the clubs to work together for their common good and the good of the hobby. Legislative issues, promotion of events, a judging system, national awards, assistance for new clubs, & liability Insurance are just a few of the things on which clubs can work and benefit together. Recently, a Fish Rescue Program has begun. This has been developed with outside partners who also have an interest in our hobby and environmental issues. What are the benefits of being a member? National awards program to honour those in member clubs who have achieved success in breeding, plant propagation, or other endeavours related to the hobby. National judging program to train and certify judges as well as set standards that all can use to judge their shows. Third-party liability insurance program to protect club members in case of an unfortunate accident at one of their functions. National forum to express views and opinions. National voice to deal with legislation which may impact negatively on our hobby and to put forward constructive ideas to politicians and bureaucrats. A chance to become involved with people who share similar interests with yourselves. If you are interested in joining CAOAC as a club or as a private (non-voting) member, please contact our Membership Chair, see under committees for address. In person meetings are held monthly (except July & August) in Waterdown, Ontario (unless otherwise posted) at the Optimist Hall where clubs which are within driving distance send their representative (s) to discuss issues of the day as well as the future.
