2 Page 2 - May 22, 2012 A Tale Of Two Brands: KitchenAid, PGA Share Common Goals In Promoting Golf Championship By Ralph Heibutzki Spirit Correspondent As high-profile events go, the 73rd Senior PGA Championship presented by KitchenAid amounts to a tale of two brands especially the second half of that title, which helps Whirlpool Corporation to bring one of its most iconic home appliance brands into viewers' living rooms. KitchenAid has been part of consumers' lives since 1919 just eight years after Whirlpool itself began producing electric, motor-driven washers. The two entities became intertwined in 1986, when Whirlpool won approval to purchase the KitchenAid brand, which includes dishwashers, stand mixers and refrigerators. Those longtime ties are part of what makes the PGA such a good fit for the brand, according to Deb O'Connor, KitchenAid's director of sponsorships and partnerships. You know, it's interesting that KitchenAid and the PGA of America both have a historical, iconic past, O'Connor explained to the Benton-Michiana Spirit. KitchenAid started with the stand mixer two years after the PGA of America started, so it's great for us. We Think It's A Nice Fit One other link between both brands gave KitchenAid a powerful incentive to renew the connections it made last year when it sponsored the 2011 PGA championship in Louisville, KY. The PGA of America and KitchenAid are similar, in the sense that they're premium brands, O'Connor said. They're both about helping people have a good time, whether it's golf, or cooking for KitchenAid. It's all about the process of cooking, and making memories with family and friends. That's what golf is like, too having a good time with your buddies, making memories on the golf course. We think it's a nice fit. KitchenAid has special activities planned for golf and culinary fans, starting with its Fairway Club which will run from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. to ticketholders during championship week. The club will be set up right near the first hole. (If you're driving from downtown Benton Harbor's Arts District, go across the railroad tracks, and turn left on Graham Avenue, to access the course from the opposite side.) Chefs from PBS, TLC and the Food Network will be on hand to give demonstrations. People can come, and ask culinary questions, O'Connor said. You'll also have an opportunity to use some of our small appliances so you can see how easy they are to use, and to clean, all that kind of stuff. (For a complete listing of the chef lineup, see the schedule to the right.) A golf simulator of Harbor Shores' seventh hole will be set up at the Fairway Club, as well, with all proceeds benefiting Cook for the Cure, KitchenAid s partnership with Susan G. Komen for the Cure. Other products and appliance demonstrations will be featured at The KitchenAid Gallery On 10, and The KitchenAid Gallery On 16, which will be located near the number 10 and 16 greens, respectively. Finally, The KitchenAid Gallery at the Clubhouse will feature a grandstand of various colors and models of the iconic KitchenAid Stand Mixer. That particular gallery will go near the clubhouse and driving range, according to its press release. Of course, this is a great way for people around here to meet the KitchenAid brand so we're hoping they will come in, and check it out, O'Connor said. It's not like we expect somebody to run out to the store and buy something immediately, but if they've used it and they had a good time using it then, when they are in the market for it, they'll think of KitchenAid. So that's the business end of it. Asked what all this activity will bring, O'Connor points to two other factors. Nobody else has anything like this, so it gives us a chance to bring our sales folks and our customers come in, and are able to cultivate relationships, O'Connor said. The other thing is our opportunity to bring this event to the Benton Harbor area and highlight Harbor Shores, and all the transformation that's been going on in the community. We're really excited to be the lead sponsor for that reason, as well. That's The Real Jeff Hintz Opportunity Hole #11, Jack Nicklaus Signature Golf Course, Benton Harbor, MI. He works with a seven-person staff in the local championship office at 101 W. Main St., downtown Benton Harbor. About 2,000 volunteers will help out this week, as well. There's some instances where I'm not the 'go-to' guy, but some where I am. We have a great office staff we've got somebody that's responsible for volunteers, somebody responsible for operations, and somebody doing hospitality/sales, so we've broken up the silos. I just lead the operation, Hintz told the Spirit. For much of the past two-year planning cycle, Hintz has also worked with the Community Showcase Committee which handles many of the actual details of presenting a championship, such as cleanup, and signage. Hintz last met with the committee on May 16, which marked his twenty-first meeting with the group. When you talk about rolling out the welcome mat, that's what that group is designed to do connect with the community, and making sure that they take advantage of the opportunity, Hintz said. With an estimated household reach of 500 million households, and more than 130 countries, it's safe to say that Southwest Michigan and Benton Harbor, in particular will get the platform to match. Obviously, it means big things for the KitchenAid folks here, headquartered within the Whirlpool umbrella, Hintz said. Without them, this championship would probably not be here the community has a real opportunity to take advantage of something that doesn't come along very often. To have the Welcome fans, family, and players to the 73rd Senior PGA From Princella Tobias, Founding Publisher, Spirit Community Newspapers international exposure Benton Harbor will have, over the next week, is extremely rare. Hintz couldn't cite specific numbers for the tournament's potential economic impact on the area, because the PGA doesn't commission those studies, he said. We have had studies done in communities where we've hosted a championship, or where they've hosted a championship so those studies are out there, Hintz said. We've seen estimates of anywhere from $20 to $40 million. We'll have 12 hours of live coverage on The Golf Channel; that's the real opportunity. Benton Harbor and Harbor Shores are going to get a lot of brand exposure during the week, and that's what you want in addition to KitchenAid. Other opportunities have been created behind the scenes such as the forklift driver training sessions hosted by United Rentals, which specializes in heavy machinery and equipment. They hosted three different sessions for people to come out and get certified to be a forklift driver which, again, is giving somebody an opportunity, Hintz said. So, we're working with our partners to maximize opportunities locally we've got 260-plus jobs that have been hired by our vendors. Those are things that we're doing to connect with the community. I Saw More Than Just A Golf Tournament Hintz, who's worked for the PGA since 2001, has been a golfing enthusiast since his childhood days. I loved golf growing up, but I was not great at it I knew I wanted to be involved in the business in some way, shape or form, Hintz said. When I went to Indiana University and studied sports marketing and management, my goal from day one was to be involved in the golf business. Originally from Indianapolis, Hintz's career has taken him from Atlanta, GA, to Baltimore, MD, Rochester, NY and Springfield, NY. However, he says that he's never gotten a better welcome than in Benton Harbor for this particular championship planning cycle,. When I came here, I saw more than just a golf tournament there's a lot of great people in the community. I saw what was being done here, and some of the transformation (that was occurring) I felt like I wanted to be here, and participate, Hintz said. The PGA is just a small part of what's happened, so far obviously, it's an important piece of the puzzle, but it's (the championship) just the start. Hintz felt sufficiently enthusiastic, in fact, to make his decision within several hours of his first visit. I called my wife in Florida, and said, 'What do you think about moving to Michigan?' That day, I really had a spark in my mind that this could be a possibility, Hintz said. It's a unique opportunity to have such a great partner in Whirlpool, and KitchenAid, and work with them on putting together a championship of this size. It's very closely aligned with what we do, so it's a perfect match. O'Connor looks forward to what happens when the championship returns in The eye of the world will be on Harbor Shores, Benton Harbor, and Benton Township, O'Connor said. We see the community transformation going on, and hopefully, a lot of people will say, 'Hey! I want to go play that Harbor Welcome to Benton Harbor A CITY OF GREAT PEOPLE With Spirit, Culture and Strength! May 22, 2012 Page 3 BENTON HARBOR OFFICE: P.O. So far, the only major title to elude him is the PGA Championship, which would put him in an elite category of grand slam winners that includes Ben Hogan, Jack Nicklaus, Gary Player, Gene Sarazen, and Tiger Woods. Purse: The 2011 Senior PGA Championship featured a $2 million purse and $360,000 for first place. The 2012 total purse will be announced prior to the Championship. The Championship is subject to the overall supervision of the Board and the PGA Rules Committee. History of the Senior PGA The oldest and most prestigious major championship in senior golf, the Senior PGA Championship was born in 1937 on the grounds of another of golf's majors at the invitation of one of the game's greatest players. At the suggestion of renowned amateur Bobby Jones Jr., the inaugural Senior PGA Championship was played at Augusta National Golf Club three years after the first Masters Tournament was held. It was established in the fall of 1937 to provide an opportunity to PGA members over the age of 50 to compete with their peers. The purse was $2,000. In an effort to find better weather conditions, the Senior PGA Championship moved to Florida in spending two years in Sarasota and one year in Fort Myers - before being suspended for two years due to World War II. When the Championship resumed in 1945, it was held in Dunedin, Fla., which would become PGA National Golf Club, home of The PGA, after the Association relocated its national office from Chicago in Florida was the site for the Senior PGA Championship from 1940 through From 1982 to 2000, the Senior PGA Championship was conducted at PGA National Golf Club in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla., The PGA of America's national headquarters. In 2001, a new chapter began in The PGA of America s history as the Senior PGA Championship went on the road. Similar to the PGA Championship, which is the golf season s final major, the Senior PGA Championship is contested on some of the nation s premier golf courses. In 2001, The Ridgewood Country Club in Paramus, N.J. was the first new site for the Senior PGA Championship, followed by Tom Watson, Defending Champion Broadcast Schedule: 2012 Senior PGA Championship: (Tentative All Times LOCAL) Thursday, May 24 Broadcast Station 12:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m. Golf Channel Friday, May p.m. (Noon) - 3 p.m. Golf Channel Saturday, May 26 3 p.m. - 6 p.m. NBC Sunday, May 27 3 p.m. - 6 p.m. NBC Firestone Country Club in Today, the Senior PGA Championship brings both the legends of the game and the newest members of senior professional golf to new audiences throughout the United States. It was during the Senior PGA Championship in December 1979, at Turnberry Isle in North Miami, Fla., that informal meetings first were held among golf's elder statesmen to explore the concept of a senior circuit. As many of golf's leading names passed age 50, they found they were no longer as competitive on the PGA Tour as they once had been, but outside of the Senior PGA Championship, playing opportunities were limited. The following month, January 1980, the Senior PGA Tour (now Champions) was founded. When the Champions Tour was launched, the Senior PGA Championship was celebrating its 42nd anniversary. 73rd Senior PGA Schedule of Events Tuesday, May 22 9 a.m. 2 p.m. Senior PGA Championship Pro-Am, Harbor Shores 4 p.m. 4: 45 p.m. Press Conference: Featuring Jack Nicklaus and leaders from The PGA of America and Whirlpool Corporation, Media Center 5 p.m. 5:45 p.m. Jack Nicklaus Golf Clinic, Harbor Shores Practice Range Wednesday, May 23 7 a.m. 8 p.m. Senior PGA Championship Practice Rounds 9 a.m. 5 p.m. Player Interviews, Media Center Thursday, May 24 Morning/Afternoon Senior PGA Championship Rounds Begin 1 p.m. 2 p.m. Celebrity Chef Ming Tsai Cooking demonstration, KitchenAid Fairway Club 5 p.m. 7 p.m. Media Reception, KitchenAid Fairway Club Friday, May 25 Morning/Afternoon Senior PGA Championship Rounds 1 p.m. 2 p.m. Celebrity Chef Pat Neely Cooking demonstration, KitchenAid Fairway Club Saturday, May 26 Morning/Afternoon Senior PGA Championship Rounds 1 p.m. 2 p.m. Celebrity Chef Buddy Valastro Cooking demonstration, KitchenAid Fairway Club Sunday, May 27 Morning/Afternoon Senior PA Championship Final Rounds ALLEN, Michael Scottsdale, Arizona ARMOUR III, Tommy Dallas, Texas ATCHISON, Tom Silver Lake, Ohio (cp) BATES, Ben Havana, Florida BECK, Chip Lake Forest, Illinois BEURMANN, Ron Jackson, Michigan (cp) BLAKE, Jay Don St. George, Utah BRAND, Jr., Gordon Bristol, SCOTLAND BRITTON, Bill - Rumson, New Jersey (cp) BROOKS, Mark Fort Worth, Texas BROWNE, Olin Tequesta, Florida BYRUM, Tom Sugar Land, Texas CALCAVECCHIA, Mark - Tequesta, Florida CARICH, David Noblesville, Indiana (cp) CARTER, Jim - Scottsdale, Arizona CHAPMAN, Roger Ascot, ENGLAND CLAMPETT, Bobby Bonita Springs, Florida COCHRAN, Russ Tequesta, Florida COOK, John Orlando, Florida CORLISS, Jon Virginia Beach, Virginia (cp) COSTON, Jeff Blaine, Washington (cp) COUPLES, Fred Austin, Texas DALEY, Joe Scottsdale, Arizona DAVIS, Scott Hurricane, West Virginia (cp) DENT, Jim Tampa, Florida DODDS, Trevor Windhoek, NAMIBIA EDWARDS, Joel Irving, Texas EGER, David Charlotte, North Carolina EVANS, Barry Charleston, West Virginia (cp) FARRY, Marc Lamorlaye, FRANCE FAULKNER, Mark Marion, Illinois (cp) FAXON, Brad Barrington, Rhode Island FERGUS, Keith Houston, Texas FORSMAN, Dan Provo, Utah FORSTER, George Blue Bell, Pennsylvania (cp) FOWLER, Peter Sydney, AUSTRALIA FRANCO, Angel Asuncion, PARAGUAY FREEMAN, Jeff Windermere, Florida FREEMAN, Robin Coronado, California FROST, David Stellenbosch, SOUTH AFRICA FUNK, Fred Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida GALLAGHER, Jr., Jim Greenwood, Mississippi GILDER, Bob Corvallis, Oregon GLASSON, Bill Stillwater, Oklahoma GOODES, Michael Reidsville, North Carolina GRAY, Mike Palm Beach Gardens, Florida (cp) HAAS, Jay Greenville, South Carolina HALLBERG, Gary Castle Rock, Colorado HANEFELD, Kirk Acton, Massachusetts (cp) HARRIGAN, Michael Tequesta, Florida (cp) HART, Jeff Solana Beach, California HARWOOD, Michael Melbourne, AUSTRALIA HERZAN, Thomas Findlay, Ohio (cp) HORGAN III, P.H. 6 Page 10 - May 22, 2012 Reaching The Next Generation: Opportunities Abound For First Tee Members Thank you Jack, Thank you PGA, Thank you KitchenAid, Thank you Benton Harbor, Thank you Benton Spirit News By Ricky Zanetti, Guest Columnist will never forget it it was 1986, I was 30 years old or I so, lived in South Carolina and was lucky to get a ticket to one of my favorite sports, the Masters Golf Tournament in Augusta, GA. Me and a friend were there when Jack Nicklaus, showed the world why he is one of the best golfers in the world. I rooted for Jack-- hole by hole -- as he tore up the back holes, outputting Greg Norman at the very end to win the Masters -- by one shot. May 22, 2012 Page 11 Unbelievable! This was over 26 years ago, but I can still remember saying, Excuse me, excuse me, excuse me, as I barged through the gallery and extended my hand to Jack Nicklaus, the champion. He shook my hand and I said Congratulations! Jack had a tear coming from his eye and he said to me, Thank you, son. Ricky Zanetti It was awesome and I will never forget it. If I was able to talk with Jack, I would tell him this story and shake his hand again for giving me a great memory. Benton Harbor s First Tee Family pictured with defending champ, Tom Watson (center, first row). By Ralph Heibutzki Spirit Correspondent very competitive game contains Emany teachable moments which is why First Tee's executive director, Ebon Sanders, is excited about the 2012 Senior PGA Championship's arrival. To Sanders, the championship will offer many such moments for his group's youthful members. It's a chance to be part of something that's gone on for a century, Sanders told the Benton-Michiana Spirit. It's a chance to be part of something that's unique to the game of golf. It's huge, the opportunity they've (the PGA) given us. It's great that Southwest Michigan and Benton Harbor are placed upon this world stage our program will be a part of that, but Benton Harbor itself will be huge in putting its best foot forward. Aimed at children 6 and up, First Tee uses golf to teach life lessons which it summarizes around nine core values, including confidence, courtesy, honesty, judgment and sportsmanship, among others. It's beneficial for all children I don't know a child that couldn't benefit from being honest, or learning the importance of integrity, Sanders said. It translates, not just through sports, it translates through life. Participants fall into three categories, including Par (ages 6-11), Birdie (11-13), and Eagle (13 and above). Children move to the next category once they master those life skills, and play at a certain level of ability. (The program operates at The Boys & Girls Club of Benton Harbor.) So far, preparing for the big week has focused on making sure that we as a chapter take advantage of the opportunities granted by the PGA, Sanders said. They've gone out of their way to include us in a lot of things. As an example, he cited the group's participation in Play Golf America Day (May 12) at Harbor Shores. We took some kids, some board members, and just helped take care of the course, Sanders said. One of the biggest showcase opportunities will come at 5 p.m. Tuesday, May 22, when Jack Nicklaus will give a clinic on the Harbor Shores driving range, one of many signature golf courses to bear his imprint as a designer. Most of the children will basically sit and watch, but there will be five kids that will interact with Mr, Nicklaus, Sanders said. Those participants will include Tatyana Bruce; 9-year-old Brian Guzzo, who's already made a reputation as an excellent player; Leroy Robertson, who's just completed his freshman year at Michigan State University; Jacob Ramirez, a Lakeshore High School student; and Matt Zerbel, a St. Joseph High School sophomore who's also making waves for his golfing ability, Sanders said. Bruce, Guzzo and Robertson are First Tee participants, while Ramirez has worked for Sanders at Harbor Shores, and Zerbel is just a really, really good high school player, Sanders said. To have somebody that golfs at this level take a look at your swing, (and) help you become better, is fantastic. He also sees the clinic as a good way of driving home that essential First Tee value of confidence. Robertson and Benton Harbor High School senior Trianna Sutton who's on the golf team, and is going to MSU this fall -- will also participate in another big showcasing opportunity, as standard bearers during the final round. The standard bearer is simply the person that walks with the group as they play and they hold the sign that tells the crowd what player is shooting, what the score is, and where they are (in overall scoring), Sanders said. We couldn't be happier, and both kids (Robertson, Sutton) have been involved (in First Tee), Sanders said. And it will be a great chance for them to see great golf being played, and being around some of the legends of the game. Sanders also expects First Tee's participation in such a high-profile event to yield even greater returns for 2014, when the Senior PGA returns to Benton Harbor. As of this year, Sanders estimates that 325 children will participate this summer a figure that swells to around 2,000, once the various school programs that First Tee also runs are also taken into account, he said. It'll (the Senior PGA) be a wonderful chance to reach out, to those that may not know as much (about First Tee) we've never really marketed the program, Sanders said. We've always had very positive word of mouth. It's going to be a way for us to put what we do on a stage, and then if properly marketed, going forward I think we will grow the program. A First Tee member with Tom Watson, during a visit to Benton Harbor To have a major golf tournament, as the Senior PGA to come to Michigan, where I now live, is great! Benton Harbor, MI, Kitchen Aid, my man Jack, and to the Benton Spirit Newspaper for keeping me informed about this great event, I speak for many in saying THANK YOU for bringing the legends of one of the best sports in the world to our area! The City of Benton Harbor was awarded 7 million dollars to stabilize their neighborhoods. NSP 2 program calculates your monthly mortgage payment based on your income. Since your monthly mortgage is based on your income, a family would pay much less on a mortgage than they would paying rent for a home.
