Please save for future reference. You may want to move your loft or change your loft configuration later on. Refer to your original Starter or Classic Product Guide. These are the only patterns which Additions may be added to. We cannot take respon sibility for free-form structures. This product is intended for use by children of immature judgment; therefore supervision is required at all times. This Model 2 loft is appropriate for children 3 7 years old. Children should not be in the room during setup. This loft requires a minimum class room ceiling height of eight feet (96"). The gap between the ceiling and the top railing must be at least 9". If your room has a sprinkler system for fire protection, you should have your loft placement checked by a local fire inspector. Your loft should be placed where hanging ceilings, ceiling fixtures, windows or skylights are not accessible to children. Do not attempt to build or take apart your loft by yourself. You need at least two adults working together to do this safely. Carefully follow the rules in this Product Guide. We cannot take responsibility for free-form structures. Railing must be less than 3½" away from the wall of your room, or more than 9". Anything in between is an entrapment hazard. Test the joints for stability before allowing children to play on the structure. Do not provide anything on the top level of your loft which children can use to climb over the sides. Changing a lower level panel or splicing an addition to a standing loft is not recommended as it is not possible to keep the structure stable while lifting weight-bearing rings. Each platform should be held down on at least two sides by panels and/or plugs to prevent the possibility of a child pushing up the floor from below. Each platform section, whether 2' x 2' or 2' x 4', will bear a load of 750 lbs., or the equivalent of one teacher and fourteen average five-year-olds. Sculpt space to create the most functional or the most fantastic loft you can imagine. You can build both with Community Lofts and Addition Kits. The most important page in this book is the Getting Started section. It gives you a simple framework of rules so that your loft will be safe and sturdy. Then we have included a configuration or two that can be made with each addition kit. You should use these as a guide to shaping your loft. 4 Getting Started Getting Started Additions are assembled using the same Basic Skills found in your Community Loft Product Guide. We recommend that you take apart your current loft and build it up again, layer by layer, incorporating the addition as part of the design. Splicing an addition into a standing loft is not advisable as it is hard to keep the structure stable while lifting the connecting rings to add more panels. Each kit in this guide can be used on either a Model 2 Classic or a Model 2 Starter loft. We have provided one or two examples of how to add each kit, but we couldn t show them all. The possibilities are immense and very exciting! Don t be surprised if you have a few pieces left over after you build a loft with additions. The kits have an extra piece or two for added flexibility. Store the extra pieces so that you will have them when you want to change your loft. 1 When you have three posts in a straight row, you must brace the center post. Any panel or arch connected to the middle post will brace it. The designs in this book are added to patterns given in the Model 2 Starter and Model 2 Classic Product Guides. This is the best way to be sure that you have a good, sturdy design. All you need to remember are three fundamental rules: 4 The Community Loft

5 2 Platforms must be held down on at least three sides. They can be held down by panels, stairs, plugs, or spacers on a free post. 3 A stair may connect to a tall post at its base. Any such stair must be enclosed by panels which extend above its railings on both sides, and these may not be arch panels. This prevents an entrapment hazard in the angle formed by the railing and the tall post. If you follow these rules, your loft will be strong, safe, and lots of fun. Model 2 Additions 5

8 Small Addition Small Addition This little Addition sure makes a big difference! Here is one example. We took one of the Model 2 Starter loft patterns and added the 2 ft. x 2 ft. Addition by the stairs. The top of the loft has an inviting balcony now, and down below the addition makes a neat ticket window. Those windows could also be a store or a puppet theatre; how about marionettes in front of that lovely maple paneling? 1 101" 53" 2 8 The Community Loft

10 Large Addition Large Addition You ll feel like you ve doubled the space in your loft when you add this double platform. Here we have built it into one of the Model 2 Starter patterns and presto! You can have a whole kitchen set in the big front room, but still plenty of quiet corners in the back and under the stairs. On the top there is lots of elbow room to sprawl with a book or do a puzzle with a friend. 1 78" 77" 2 10 The Community Loft

11 3 There are two ways to add a large platform. Here we have added it to a wall that had two posts. On the next spread is an example of adding to a three post wall. 4 Model 2 Additions 11

12 A Large Addition can also be built into a three post wall, leaving a free post on the top floor. Because platforms need to be held down on at least three sides, you will use 32" spacers on the post to secure the floor. Add a ring and a cap to the post and lock it all together. The children will find many uses for the post as it makes a great parking meter, hitching post for the pony express, or mast for a ship sailing the high seas! A child in a wheelchair can roll right through this Model 2 Classic with a Large Addition. 14 Diagonal Addition Diagonal Addition The Diagonal Addition is an inexpensive way to bring interest to any loft. This Model 2 Classic pattern feels like it has much more space on the top now, while down below a private nook invites a daydreamer. Just like the Large Addition, you may have a free post on the top floor. Make sure to use the 32" spacers on this post to hold down any platforms that could be pushed up from below. 16 Small Landing Small Landing A Small Landing Kit will add both visual interest and extra play space to any Model 2 loft. Shown here on a Model 2 Classic pattern, the landing is only 28" off the floor. Children can scramble onto the landing through a small arch as well as climbing the stairs. This 2 ft. x 2 ft. landing has such a cute cozy corner underneath that you ll wish there was one your size! 1 77" 101" 2 16 The Community Loft

18 Large Landing Large Landing Do you want a real three story loft? The Large Landing Kit will make an L shaped landing (4 ft. x 4 ft.) or a rectangular landing (2 ft. x 6 ft., shown in our catalog) on any Model 2 loft. This kit nearly doubles the play space of the Starter loft. Only 28" above the floor, the landing is 1 accessible through an arch panel in the side as well as by the stairs. Of course, the tunnel under the landing is the most fun of all, and will be used for honey storage by Pooh as well as other small bears The Community Loft

20 Special Combinations Special Combinations Now, just to whet your whistle, here are some of the ideas we discovered as we played with the Addition Kits. Most of these combinations can be built into any Model 2 loft.we are sure you will come up with some spectacular ones yourself; it takes only a little imagination and a sprinkle of creativity. Just like working with your kids! Note: For special combinations, ask your account manager for supplemental assembly instruction in addition to the standard Product Guides. 77" 77" Here is a trapezoid that will fit almost anywhere. It is made with a Small Addition and a Diagonal Addition. A terrific space expander, the diagonal door below also adds visual interest. 20 The Community Loft

21 101" This special loft is an L320 Classic with an L312 Large Addition. We rear ran ged a few panels, and created a wide path right through the loft. Wheelchairs roll in one side and roll out the other! 101" Model 2 Additions 21

22 Remember the Corner Loft featured in our catalog? We have shown all the steps so you can see how it is constructed. It s built by adding a Small Addition and a Diagonal Addition to the Model 2 Starter. The balcony effect softens the corner of any room. 24 Isn t this a fascinating loft? The stairs come from inside the loft, and the handsome and seaworthy ship s prow is built from just two Diagonal Additions.
