ARIZONA WOMEN S GOLF ASSOCIATION 7590 EAST GRAY ROAD, SUITE 103, SCOTTSDALE, AZ AWGA.ORG NEWSLINKS SEPTEMBER 2018 Volunteers...Our Greatest Asset! By Robyn Noll, AWGA Business Resources and Technology Manager Not long ago, I was on the phone with the Handicap Chair of the Las Colinas Wrens, Shelley Heberlein, whose address had been associated with another person in our database. In the course of fixing that problem, I learned that the reason it happened was that Shelley takes care of renewals for some of her club s older members. One of them is almost 90 and is still out playing a few times a month... isn t that wonderful? There was something special in our conversation, something that stayed with me all day and beyond. It s how GRATEFUL Shelley was to be able to provide this service to the women in her club and how HAPPY she was that we found a way for her to keep being able to do this thoughtful thing for her ladies. If you ve ever volunteered for something about which you are passionate, you will recognize the particular sort of joy Shelley was expressing! I began to marvel, not for the first time, at the fact that all around the state there are thousands of women who love and who are motivated to give back to the game of golf, just like Shelley. In fact, the scale is staggering when you think about not just the Handicap Chairs; but also the Tournament Committees who handle all the details for a season s worth of play days; the AWGA Reps who keep their memberships informed and who oversee the State Medallion Tournament; and the Club Officers who recruit new members, make sure goals are being met, and keep club finances in order. And, I also marvel at our Association volunteers! Over the last two years, as the integration with the AGA has been discussed and plans made, there have been countless meetings of the Board of Directors. The amount of time our Board has devoted to making sure women s voices are still strong in the Arizona golf community has been staggering to witness, especially when you realize that many have traveled from Prescott, Vail, Tucson and even as far away as Sonoita to our office in Scottsdale sometimes multiple times per week when video conferencing was not viable. We owe them all a great debt for how much time and energy they ve been willing to expend during this process. This fall, volunteers are going to be vital to the success of the changes taking place as a result of both the GHIN Platform updates and our operational integration with the Arizona Golf Association. Every Handicap Chair will be learning the nuances of the new GHIN system, so that they can handle score postings, reporting and more. AWGA Reps will be attending training sessions in their region, so they can answer questions regarding the launch of our new website in January as well as other club resources. Club officers will be making decisions about whether their club members will be able to join and renew their memberships online. Among our committee volunteers, Course Raters are figuring out ways to integrate the men s and women s rating processes. Rules Officials are learning 2019 s modernized Rules of Golf so they can be ready to answer questions and help train others over the next few months and beyond. On behalf of the AWGA, I would like to take a moment to say a simple but heartfelt thank you to all the volunteers who, in ways big and small, give of their time to make women s golf better. As your club seasons kick off, please take the time to notice what the ladies around you are doing and how many of them are participating in golf at an even deeper level. This is good advice for all aspects of life if you see someone doing a great job, take a moment to thank them!

2 AWGA NEWSLINKS SEPTEMBER Tournament Season Winding Down It s been a busy schedule in 2018 for AWGA Championships and Association Days. As we enter the fourth quarter, there are a few traditional favorite events on the tournament calendar as well as one new event for The 2018 Scotch Play tournament will be October 1-2 at White Mountain Country Club in Pinetop. This format allows two-person teams to play 36 holes of stroke play conducted in accordance with the Chapman system (also known as Pinehurst). The partners both drive from the tee, each partner plays a second shot with the other s ball after which a choice is made as to the ball with which the hole is to be completed, continuing with alternate shots until the ball is holed. From Pinetop, we head to the Tucson area for the 2018 Partners Tournament November at El Conquistador Golf Resort. The format for this event changes as Day 1 is 18 holes of Four-Ball Stroke play followed on Day 2 by 18 holes of individual Stroke Play with modified Stableford scoring using the aggregate score of partners. Our final event of the 2018 season is the 2018 Holiday Mixer scheduled for December 3 at Oro Valley Country Club. This newly developed event format will be a Two-person teams will play six holes in a Best Ball format, then six holes as an Alternate Shot format, followed by the last six holes in a scramble format. Looking ahead to 2019, the State Medallion Club Team Tournament will take place on January 5-6 at PebbleCreek Golf Resort in Goodyear. 3 3 AWGA NEWSLINKS SEPTEMBER 2018 AWGA Build A TEAM Swings into Fall Competition The AWGA Build a TEAM program was created to help high schools throughout Arizona develop enthusiastic girl s golf teams. The program utilizes AWGA resources to connect school programs with the instruction and to provide the necessary equipment needed to compete and be successful. The AWGA assists and funds eight to 12 girl s high school teams annually through the AWGA Youth Player Development Grants and Assistance program. Throughout the summer months, many student-athletes received instruction from local PGA and LPGA Professionals. Most players enjoy the short game sessions and see improvement in their chipping, pitching, sand play and putting. Coaches are appreciative of the AWGA support to purchase new uniforms and equipment to help their teams. Many teams have used AWGA funds to purchase push carts to help players navigate the courses in the Arizona heat. For 2018, the following schools were awarded grant funds to help improve and sustain their high school girls teams. Agua Fria Chandler Marana Mesa Metro Tech Paradise Valley Sahuaro Shadow Mountain Teams are currently busy competing this fall. If your women s league or golf club is interested in adopting a team, please contact Le Ann at the AWGA (leann@awga. org) for additional information Just 4 Fun Events Popular Again The AWGA Just 4 Fun events are designed to welcome newer golfers to the course in a friendly, non-intimidating manner or for a group of golf friends to play together without a specific format. This is a great time for AWGA members to invite friends who may be interested in joining the AWGA or to invite your spouse, co-worker, neighbor or relative. The Just 4 Fun goals are simple: There is no specific format for play You may play whatever tees you wish You may keep score or you may just play for fun You may play any game(s) you wish within your group You may select any or none of the above. We simply ask that you have fun and keep up with the group in front of you The 2018 sites were selected based on feedback from previous venues as well as providing members an opportunity to play a new courses they may not have played previously. We hosted 12 events in 2018 and welcomed nearly 500 players, many first-time players in an AWGA event. We are currently working on the 2019 schedule. If you think your facility or one you have recently played would make a Just 4 Fun host site in 2019, please contact Le Ann at the AWGA (leann@awga. org) and share your suggestion.

4 AWGA NEWSLINKS SEPTEMBER 2018 Exciting Times Ahead for the AWGA By Mary Pomroy, AWGA Executive Director We are nearing the completion of our work with the AGA to integrate our operations beginning January 1, We ve all had change thrust upon us at times in our lives. I can t say that the last couple of years have been easy for the Board and staff of the AWGA. But, we are very resilient and forward-thinking individuals, and all of us are focused on the best interests of amateur golf in Arizona, especially on our current members, the women in our golf community. We are excited, that where we are headed, will be good for golfers -- women, men, girls and boys as well as the golf industry. One of the many synergies that is being created by this integration is bringing the staff and Boards of the AWGA and the AGA together to embrace the entirety of our memberships. While together we are the same number of people, we ll be a greater whole. Even as we work together to complete the integration, we are better realizing the individual strengths that each of us brings and are exploring new ways to amplify those strengths to enhance our service to the golf community. As the AWGA enters its 95th year, you can expect to see a more singular focus on the charitable and philanthropic aspects of what the AWGA does through our Youth and Adult Player Development, Women s Industry Outreach, and Volunteer Development programs. Expect to see the AWGA expand these programs, to touch even more deeply, the people and organizations that benefit from them. Watch for more information throughout the fall and coming spring about the ways in which we do this, and the results we produce. And of course, we would be grateful for your continued contributions to these programs when the Annual Giving Season comes around later this fall. We want to thank you for your continued support and engagement with the AWGA and your future engagement as we all become part of the AGA. Together, we will continue to focus on the things you care about and on serving your needs as golfers. Hear Ye! Here Ye! The New Rules Are Coming! The New Rules Are Coming! By Marilyn Reynolds, AWGA Rules Committee Most golfers are aware that the USGA and the Royal and Ancient have collectively made a mass overhaul of the Rules of Golf which will become effective on January 1, This is a huge and highly out of character effort to modernize golf guidelines to make them easier to understand, simpler to learn, and more consistent with one another. Golf etiquette is treated differently in the new rules than it was in the past. Previously, the topic of etiquette was addressed in a section at the beginning of the rules book before the actual rules. This covered behavior on the course including: The Spirit of the Game, Safety, Consideration for other Players, Pace of Play, Priority on the Course, and, Care of the Course. Many aspects of etiquette have been moved from a section outside the rules of golf into the rules themselves. In the Proof Copy of the new rules for 2019, the topic of etiquette is addressed in Rule 1 entitled Standards of Player Conduct. The subheadings include: Acting with integrity, Showing consideration to others, and Taking good care of the course. The new regulations also state the Committee may set its own standards of player conduct in a Code of Conduct adopted as a Local Rule. This is brand new. This means that beginning January 1, 2019, every golf club could adopt Local Rules to address etiquette issues that were previously considered matters outside the Rules of Golf. With this change in location and added emphasis, the implication is that etiquette issues may have more redress than in the past.

5 AWGA NEWSLINKS SEPTEMBER 2018 Identifying Your Relief Area By Lyman Gallup, AWGA Rules Committee Chair In the last edition of this Newsletter, I addressed the new procedure for dropping a ball under the 2019 Rules of Golf. One of the topics in that article was Where to Drop. It is important to properly determine where to drop so that you do not drop in, and play from, a wrong place. The purpose of this article is to identify a procedure to follow to identify the appropriate relief area when taking free relief. First, identify your reference point for dropping the ball. If your ball lies in an abnormal course condition on the course (ground under repair, temporary water, immovable obstruction, animal hole) or the abnormal course condition physically interferes with your stance or the area of your intended swing, the reference point is the nearest point of complete relief. The nearest point of complete relief is the spot closest to the ball s location that is not closer to the hole, is in the same area of the course as the ball, and provides complete relief from the condition. Typically you can choose whether to take relief from an abnormal course condition unless the golf course says relief is mandatory. However, if your ball lies on a wrong green or if a wrong green interferes with your stance or the area of your intended swing, you must take relief by locating a reference point as described above except it must be in the general area. For an embedded ball, the reference point is immediately behind (farther from the hole than) the spot where the ball was embedded. If your ball is known or virtually certain to be lost in an abnormal course condition then the specific point where the ball lies is not known. In this case, assume the ball lies where it last crossed the edge of the abnormal course condition and determine the reference point as the nearest point of complete relief from that spot. If your ball lies in the general area, the reference point must be in the general area. If your ball lies in a bunker, the reference point must be in the bunker. If your ball lies in a penalty area, there is no free relief using these procedures and you must either play the ball as it lies or take penalty relief under Rule 17. Next, once you have established the reference point (it is good practice to mark that spot with something like a tee), determine the extent of the relief area into which you must drop your ball. When taking relief without penalty, the relief area must be within one club-length of the reference point, must be in the same area of the course as the reference point, and must not be closer to the hole than the reference point. The one club-length may only be measured with the longest club in your bag that is not a putter. The relief area will often be approximately a quarter circle or sometimes as much as a half circle with a one club-length radius. Lastly, drop your ball in the relief area and play on. Happy golfing! Questions? Contact me by at LymanGallup@ gmail.com. To link this article to the 2019 Rules of Golf and to maximize your understanding, I recommend you read Rule 16 and also the definitions for animal hole, areas of the course, embedded (ball), general area, ground under repair, nearest point of complete relief, obstruction, relief area, temporary water, and wrong green. For a ball on a wrong green, read new Rule 13.1f.

6 AWGA NEWSLINKS SEPTEMBER 2018 Proper Posture Sets Us Up For Success By Peggy Briggs, LPGA, PeggyBriggs.com Co-Author Smashing Balls: Golf, Opening Doors for Women As the heat winds down, it may be a time to revisit our set up posture. Too much inside time during the summer heat can turn our abs and glutes soft. We fit into two undesirable categories if we are struggling to have a neutral posture at set up. Too much arch in our lower back is often referred to as S posture. This is one of the leading causes of low back pain. If we are too hunched over in our upper back, it is referred to as C posture. This will restrict our turn and force us to bend our elbows. Place a club across your hips with your thumbs on your hip joints. Get into a neutral spine posture and bend forward from the hips, not the lower or upper back. Neutral Pelvis Forward Bend With Club (we saw Pernilla Lindberg do this as a pre-shot routine when she won the ANA Inspiration in March.) Both of these postures restrict something in the swing causing our golf ball to be mis-directed or lose power in our swing. There are a few simple things you can do. First, take a look at your own posture in the mirror. Stand vertical with the club out in front of you and get into a neutral spine. Now simply bend forward from the hips and place the club on the ground. Repeat several times to get the feeling of bending from your hips in a neutral pelvis If you are the C, try some Palms Up Club Lifts Make your own assessment of what you are, Neutral, S or C If you are the S, try some Hip Bar Hinges Start by grabbing a 5-iron about shoulder width apart and holding it out in from of you with your palms facing the sky. Press the club out in front of your body and slowly raise the club as high as you can above your head. Make sure you are constantly pushing the club away from your body.

7 AWGA NEWSLINKS SEPTEMBER 2018 Standing Prayer Stretch Proper Sitting for Better Golf By Debra Pentz, DC, Nevyhealth.com Co-Author Smashing Balls: Golf, Opening Doors for Women You can improve your golf game just by sitting properly. The average American sits 9 13 hours per day - that s a lot of time to improve your golf posture and reduce the risk of back pain. Grab onto a golf club or pole and stand it up in front of you. Sit back into your heels until you get a big stretch in your shoulders and lats. Hold for two breaths and repeat. If these are difficult for you, refer to Debra Pentz s article, Proper Sitting for Better Golf. Rules of Golf Seminars Coming Soon Most people sit with their shoulders rounded forward and pelvis tucked under their torso (see picture), causing the back to look like a C. We get in this bad sitting position by the movement pattern that occurs as we sit down. If you incorrectly bend at the waist, you are likely to have your shoulders rounded, and your pelvis tipped back. The proper way to go from standing to sitting is to first hinge at the hips just as you should do in the your golf posture at set up. You can get into the proper sitting posture (see picture) by getting into your golf posture and imagining that you have a tail. You don t want to sit on your tail. You want your tail to be behind you which means you must roll your pelvis forward. When you do this, the entire spine straightens, and the shoulders shift back. If you find this position uncomfortable or painful, see a chiropractor or physical therapist. Movement patterns that we perform on a routine basis (like sitting), tend to carry over into activities such as the golf swing. UNIQUE S REQUIRED ASAP When the GHIN Platform changes later this year, every golfer will be required to have a unique online profile in order to use many of its new features. If one or more golfers (couples, parents, children, etc.) share an address, NONE of the player profiles will have an address loaded to the new platform and will subsequently, not receive erevisions. Affected members should act now to create individual addresses. To play better golf sit properly and sit less. Note: Children under 13 will not be allowed to have an address, but the new platform will allow them to be associated with a parent account.
