1 ARIZONA WOMEN S GOLF ASSOCIATION 7590 EAST GRAY ROAD, SUITE 103, SCOTTSDALE, AZ AWGA.ORG The AWGA hosts a variety of programs designed for women to play golf or be introduced to the game. These programs would not be possible without the support and engagement of our many wonderful volunteers and that includes our Player Development Programs. All player development programs must have qualified and skilled LPGA and PGA Professionals to teach the game, but what is unique about AWGA player development programs is that we actively engage golfers in helping to promote and increase participation in the game they love. By volunteering for the Golf 101 program, you can help encourage and support women as they learn the game, connect them with the women s golf community, and inspire them to make golf a lifestyle, just as you have. By volunteering for the High School Girls Golf Build a TEAM program, you can help make sure that the girl s high school teams that we adopt into the program get the support that they need to develop their skills and proudly represent their schools. The support they need is more than the donations that we provide, it includes providing encouragement and communications support to the teams and the coaches. Both programs are winding down for 2018, but will be starting up again in early We are accepting applications now for the following positions: AWGA Golf 101 NEWSLINKS NOVEMBER 2018 Volunteers Make ALL the Difference Ambassadors provide support, encouragement, and education to Golf 101 participants. Golf 101 sessions are conducted over six classes - each 1 to 1 1/2 hours in length - over several weeks. An Ambassador needs to be present at each class to: Assist the Golf Professional as requested (examples would be by helping to set up the lesson tee, greeting the students, distributing information). Help demonstrate etiquette and other golf information to participants. Explain the benefits of belonging to the AWGA, of belonging to a local women s golf club, encouraging them to join, and stay in the game. Share your enthusiasm and love for the game. If you are enthusiastic about golf and the AWGA, have good communication skills, are friendly and outgoing (especially if you ve had mentoring experience), then becoming an Ambassador may be right for you. Build a TEAM Advocates provide support for the coach and encouragement for the team. Form a relationship with the team coach. Attend home meets to cheer the girls on, provide registration assistance, and other assistance as requested. Pay attention to the status and needs of the team and assist the coach in communicating with the AWGA. If you have a heart for young people, an appreciation for the value of participation in sports and golf particularly, and a little time to share, you can make a difference by volunteering for this program. Specific teams and instruction sites will be determined in the spring. Apply now to get involved. If you are interested in volunteering for either of these programs, please visit the volunteer tab at awga.org and fill out an application form.

2 2 AWGA NEWSLINKS NOVEMBER 2018 AWGA Annual Giving Campaign Begins It s hard to believe, but another exciting year in women s golf is coming to a close. One special highlight of the year was watching so many women with ties to Arizona compete in the inaugural U.S. Senior Women s Open. Two of ASU s national intercollegiate individual golf champions did particularly well. Jo Anne Carner, 79, thrilled the crowd by shooting her age in the first round, and Danielle Ammaccapane finished oneunder par for the event, placing fourth. Former University of Arizona star Lara Tennant, an amateur, had the event s inaugural hole-in-one and went on to win this year s U.S. Senior Women s Amateur. All the buzz and hype indicates that the mainstream is picking up on what the AWGA has known since 1924: that not only is golf for women;women s golf can be PHENOMENAL! The great thing is you don t need to compete at the highest levels, to benefit from the game s many social and health benefits. The AWGA plays a pivotal role in creating opportunities for women of all ages to grow and thrive through golf, whether they are first timers who want to see what the game is about or veteran golfers striving to improve their game and lower their scores. We are uniquely able to provide Arizona s women golfers with an ingress to the game and understand that, for women, golf can be as much about camaraderie, as it is about competition. Creating player development programs, recruiting and training volunteers, publishing our many communications, innovating new ways to get and keep women in the game - all the things we do beyond just managing handicaps and course ratings - cost more than membership fees can cover. That s why, as a 501(c)(3) public charity, we need YOUR ASSISTANCE to help us grow the game and get more women to experience its benefits. How can you help? Go online now to AWGA.org/Donate to help our nonprofit initiatives succeed. Your gift of: $2,500 sends our Rules team to USGA/PGA Rules of Golf Workshops to learn how to apply rulings at our events; helps send a team to the USGA Course Rating calibration seminar to ensure our raters continue to be some of the best in the nation. $2,000 funds one Build a TEAM school for the year, including professional instruction and equipment. $1,500 purchases new GPS and Laser finders for the Course Rating Committee. $1,200 sends one staff member to an intensive professional development class. $1,000 provides training to our Golf 101 Ambassadors; purchases Adobe Suite for one user for the year. $600 purchases contest prizes for the Just 4 Fun events. $500 provides Rules of Golf seminars to juniors; helps recruit more volunteers. $400 purchases an ipad to recruit new members at PR events. $250 purchases a television for use at Tournaments for live scoring. $90 purchases a GEM Award plaque. We know that you share our passion for golf and our desire to see women succeed. With your help, we will inspire and encourage more women to engage in the game. 4 4 AWGA NEWSLINKS NOVEMBER 2018 AWGA Build A TEAM Finishes Fall Season The eight teams that participated in the AWGA Build a TEAM program recently finished their fall season of competition. Sahuaro High School in Tucson, pictured above, earned a trip to the Arizona Interscholastic Association (AIA) Division II State Tournament. Rain and severe weath- er shortened the 36-hole event to one day, so Sahuaro shot a team score of 358, to finish 8th out of 12 teams. They were led by Halley Hughes who shot a 78, followed by Serenity Guerrero with an 82. Chandler High School, pictured to the right, qualified again for the AIA Division I State Tournament. Chandler shot a twoday team score of 785 (386, 399) to finish 11th out of 12 teams. They were led by Annike Lagos who finished 32nd overall with scores of 89 and 85. Ciana Reynosco was the second low scorer for Chandler with rounds of 94 and 89 to finish 42nd overall. This year Chandler had their highest ranked team in school history and also their best finish in the state high school tournament. Congratulations! Applications for the 2019 Season will be available in December for high school coaches to once again apply for AWGA assistance. 5 5 AWGA NEWSLINKS NOVEMBER 2018 Is my Relief Area One Club-Length or Two Club-Lengths? By Lyman Gallup, AWGA Rules Committee Chair The 2019 Rules of Golf specify a relief area whenever a player will put a ball in play, or return a ball to play, by dropping it. The size of the relief area will always be either one clublength in radius or two club-lengths in radius depending on the situation. Under the current rules we have often used the phrase one club-length if it is free relief, two club-lengths if it is penalty relief to describe the size of the area into which a ball must be dropped. Under the 2019 Rules, that phrase no longer applies in exactly the manner it did previously. Each individual relief rule specifies the size of the relief area. The purpose of this article is to provide a way to separate the two club-length relief areas from the one club-length relief areas. Only two situations in the 2019 Rules of Golf provide for a relief area with a two club-length radius and both involve the method called lateral relief. One situation occurs when a player takes lateral relief from a red penalty area (formerly a lateral water hazard) under Rule 17.1d(3). The relief area is all of the golf course (except the same penalty area) within two club-lengths of the point where the ball last crossed the edge of the red penalty area, but not closer to the hole than that point. The second situation occurs if a player declares his or her ball unplayable and decides to take lateral relief under Rule 19.2c. The relief area is all of the golf course within two club-lengths of, but not closer to the hole than, the spot of the original ball. Pace of Play as of 2019 By Marilyn Reynolds, AWGA Rules Committee & AWGA Adult Player Development Committee Chair All other relief areas have only a one club-length radius. This mimics the pre procedure for relief from an abnormal course condition (temporary water, ground under repair, animal hole, or an immovable obstruction) and a wrong putting green (with a slight modification). As well, in situations where a player previously had to drop as near as possible to a spot or a line (like embedded ball relief), the 2019 relief area will be within one club-length of an identified reference point. Once you start using the new reference point and relief area definitions, I believe you will like the consistency with which they are applied. However, there is no good substitute for reading the rule and practicing a couple of situations. If you have any questions, feel free to me at LymanGallup@gmail.com The New Rules of Golf which begin on January 1, 2019, shed some interesting light on pace of play issues. Never have we had such direct reference in the rules about how fast golf should be played. New rule 5.6 deals with Unreasonable Delay and Prompt Pace of Play and states in stroke play, players may play ready golf in a safe and responsible way. Furthermore: Each player should recognize that his or her pace of play is likely to affect how long it will take other players to play their rounds, including both those in the player s own group and those in following groups. Even more surprising, is the recommendation that the player make a stroke in no more that 40 seconds. Rules officials have used this standard to time players for years, but it has not been stated clearly for all to know that this is the expectation until now. The New Rules of Golf state it clearly in 5.6 b (1). Taking more than 40 seconds is a clear indicator that a player is taking too much time. You and your friends could have fun timing each other to see how you are doing. Start your stopwatch as soon as it a player s turn and stop it when the ball leaves the club face. Pace of play is the number one issue in golf. Every player and golf group should make every effort to ensure a good pace of play in every round. USGA Tournament Management Software powered by Golf Genius makes it possible to put time par on your scorecards. If you are not using this device, you are missing an opportunity to educate your players and hold them to an acceptable pace of play standard.

6 6 AWGA NEWSLINKS NOVEMBER 2018 Better Contact for Control and Distance By Peggy Briggs, LPGA, PeggyBriggs.com Co-Author Smashing Balls: Golf, Opening Doors for Women Are you tired of hitting Fat and Thin shots? Are these shots keeping you from scoring your best? You might hit the ground before the golf ball (also called a fat shot), or, hit the top of the golf ball on the upswing (also called a thin shot). With either of these shots, you sacrifice distance and control. To prevent fat or thin shots, a proper weight shift is important. Proper weight shift has your weight move with the golf club. When we take our back swing, our weight should shift slightly in the same direction as the golf club. As we swing the golf club to the ball and forward to finish the swing, our weight and body should move with our golf club. Start in the golf posture with feet together and holding a light weight or ball. As you swing your arms to the right (for right handed golfers), step to the left then turn and toss the ball to the left. Make sure there is a weight transfer to the leg on the tossing side. Repeat 10 times. For left handed golfers, you would swing your arms to the left, step to the right then turn and toss the ball to the right. Torso Turn in Golf Posture with Golf Club Guide To ensure proper weight shift, balance and coordination are critical. Try these few ideas for better contact with the ball. You may find your golf ball going farther down the fairway. Step and Toss: Place a golf club on the ground next to your lead leg as shown above. Get in a good 5-iron golf posture with your hands holding a golf club or aiming stick against your hip bones. Keeping the club against your hip bones, take a full backswing (shoulder should come under your chin). From here, return to the impact position, then rotate your whole body through to the finish; maintaining a good stable posture through the impact zone. You should finish with the golf clubs parallel over each other and your weight moved to the target leg. 7 7 AWGA NEWSLINKS NOVEMBER 2018 Strike the Pose By By Dr. Debra Pentz, DC, Nevyhealth.com Co-Author Smashing Balls: Golf, Opening Doors for Women Finishing your swing with all your weight solidly on your lead leg (left leg for right handed golfers) is a good indicator that you made a good swing and transferred your weight properly. You also need that weight transfer to generate power to hit the ball farther. Men can muscle the swing to hit a long ball. Women need to rely on good mechanics to ensure weight transfer (see Peggy Briggs article). Stand on one leg arms across chest turn shoulders and maintain balance. Focus on finish position. Finishing Pose To make this happen, you must have good balance. Here are a few activities improve your balance and weight transfer: Stand on one leg 30 seconds without wiggling or wobbling. Torso Turn Balance on One Leg Practice the finish. You should be able to see the bottom of the trail leg shoe. Strike the pose for better golf. PGA Jr. League Golf is Alive and Well in the Greater Prescott Area! By Melanie Bridges, AWGA Course Rating Committee Chair For the last three summers, junior golfers, ages eight to 16, have participated in the PGA Jr. League of Greater Prescott. It has been a wonderful mix of boys and girls spanning the entire age group. Their golf skill improvements were obvious. The team work they demonstrated was awesome. They had fun learning and playing the game of golf. While the Juniors were practicing and not without taking their golf with them. The school golf teams in the area are reaping the benefits of this program too. So thank you, AWGA, for your financial support. All of these youngsters have benefitted through league scholarships and by learning all the facets of the game of golf. playing matches, the parents were watching with broad smiles. Now the Juniors are back in school, but All of us are looking forward to an even greater season in 2019, so again, thank you AWGA for your generous support of the PGA Jr. League of Greater Prescott.
