Take a look at some of the first quarter playing opportunities. Mark your calendar, go on line and register. Have a problem registering contact a board member and they will help. A member will meet with you at a convenient location. It may be at home or at the Pro Shop using the computers on site. You pick the place that makes the experience best for you. UPCOMING EVENTS Each Thursday the SBRMGA holds a weekly event. Descriptions of the events can be found on the SBRMGA web site. Pick one or all but pick an event and join the fun. 2 P A G E 2 PIMA CUP Do you know what the PIMA CUP is? Many have seen past results and over the years many have played in the PIMA CUP. Refreshing my memory the PIMA CUP is a round robin golf competition between 8 clubs in the area. Each club hosts one event. We have the privilege of hosting the final competitive event, the playoffs. The event is a 2 man best ball flighted event. There are 3 flights covering our range of handicaps. We send 6 golfers to each event. Each club is requested to have 6 fresh golfers at each event. We do the math here and it means tee to green we need a total of 48 golfers. The PIMA CUP provides great fellowship, opportunities to meet golfers from other clubs, the chance to play at clubs we may otherwise not enjoy and of course good natured, friendly competition and hospitality. Hey, rumor has it that they are either righties or lefties, tend to wear hats, moved here from someplace else and enjoy putting a small most often white orb in a hole after removing a flag. Can t be all bad. This year the eight clubs are La Paloma, Forty Niners, Highlands, HOA #1, HOA #2, El Conquistador, Ventana and SaddleBrooke Ranch. The remaining dates of play are the following January Forty Niners; February Highlands; March #1; March HOA # 2; April Conquistador; April Ventana; and May SaddleBrooke Ranch for the playoffs. What do we need? GOLFERS! How do you sign up? Send an to Paul Lapotosky paul.lap@live.com with subject PIMA CUP telling him you wish to play in the PIMA CUP. Note any restrictions you may have regarding date or time. Paul sets the TEAM for each event and will contact you if you are selected for the team. At that time Paul will provide additional instructions as to finalizing the signup / next steps. As of January 17 th we need two players with handicaps between 18 and 28 for the January 29 th date at Forty Niners! Plus alternates for all three flights on the same date. Contact Paul to enjoy a little friendly competition, maybe lunch or dinner, make some new friends and play a different course. T H E S C O R E C A R D

3 V O L U M E 1, I S S U E 1 P A G E 3 RYDER CUP The first special event of the 2018 SBRMGA golf season, the RYDER CUP, tees up February 8, 14 and 15. Fellow members continue to offer their past experience as proof of the great times had by all. No holding back by either winners or losers. Everything points to this special event as one of the highlights of the first quarter golfing season at the Ranch. The possibilities are endless. At least forty eight (48) golfers, 2 teams, 2 co-captains for each team, 3 days in February and a RYDER CUP format. The three day event follows the Ryder Cup team match play format with foursomes (alternate shot) played on February 8, four ball (two man team best ball) February 14 and singles matches February 15. There will be at least 12 foursome matches, 12 four ball matches and 24 singles matches. The Red team co-captains Mike Mycka and Dave Hansel; and the Blue team co-captains Larry Sandoval and Rob Nemecek will be selecting their 24 man teams upon signup closing noon February 2. Additions to the teams will be made beyond the 48 total golfers as additional signups are received aggregating 4. The Red team and Blue team pairings to be announced thereafter. The SBRMGA Ryder Cup provides a special match play competition for its members. Whether the golfer is considered an A, B, C or D flight they will be paired in competition, Red team vs Blue team, with a like flighted member. Unlike the Ryder Cup there is no one sitting out. All 48 golfers participate each day. What do we need? GOLFERS! We do not want to leave anyone out if possible. We will fill additional slots as each 4 additional signups are received through noon February 2. We hear the noise in the Bistro after weekly events. It s easy to believe that every member would relish the opportunity to post the determining score for his team win. Signup using the SBRMGA website (not SBR Chelsea). Find the Ryder Cup under the tournament tab upcoming events. Follow the prompts provided and pay the $10 fee a bargain at 67% of weekly. Besides fun, possible bragging rights, a few high fives or fist bumps, some hoots and hollers not to mention 3 days of golf what more could you ask for. Check with Harley he s the expert on RYDER CUP. A nod to the teams and co-captains is due. Here s wishing good luck to the Red Team and its co-captains Mike Mycka and Dave Hansel; and not to be overlooked the Blue Team and co-captains Larry Sandoval and Rob Nemecek. Preferring the Oxford Dictionary definition, may the rub of the green be with all. Sign up it s not too late.

4 V O L U M E 1, I S S U E 1 Gentlemen P A G E 4 GOOD TO KNOW The other day I was asked if a score that was way beyond one s handicap should be posted. I answered that question by saying if the round is acceptable for posting, then it doesn t matter what your score is you have to add it to your GHIN table. But before you add your score to GHIN you can adjust each hole to reflect your equitable stroke control or ESC. Every golfer has a bad game and the ESC is design to eliminate your high scoring holes so that your handicap index reflects your true golfing ability. Your equitable stroke is the maximum number of strokes that you can take on a hole based upon your handicap for that game. Every member is responsible for posting their correct score on GHIN. For those members who do not know what their Equitable Stroke Control (ESC) number is I listed below a table along with directions on how you can determine your equitable stroke. If you have any questions or concerns on how to use this Equitable Stroke Control, please them to me and I will get back to you. handicap = 9 or less max = double bogey handicap = 10 through 19 max = 7 handicap = 20 through 29 max = 8 handicap = 30 through 39 max = 9 handicap = 40 or more max = 10 If your handicap for the course and the tees you are playing that day is 9 or less, then the maximum score is a double bogey (a 5 on a par 3 or a seven on a par 5). If your handicap is 10 thru 19, the maximum score is 7, regardless of what par is for the hole. A 17 handicap player records a maximum score of 7 for par 3s and for par 5s. Likewise, the maximum score for a player with a handicap in the 20s is 8 and the maximum for a player with a handicap in the 30s is 9. SBRMGA Handicap and Rules Chairman- Rob Nemecek

The Purple Heart Classic Golf Tournament at Omni Tucson National Resort will be played Saturday April It is a fundraiser to benefit many Veteran related charities in our area. Please click on the link below to learn more about the tournament and the organizations supported. Your board has voted to support this tournament by subsidizing the tournament cost for 2 foursomes. The team entry fee is $1000 or $250 a player, of which the Board has approved paying half. That means the individual cost will be just $125 to participate in this worthy cause. Selection will be made by lottery drawing on February 15 at the post Ryder Cup luncheon. Primary players will be drawn, then alternates. The successful entrants should be prepared to submit $125 to the Treasurer by check or cash. If you wish to enter this drawing, please reply to Ed Robertson at eddie737@me.com.
