The tee times will continue to be sequential (i.e., not a shot gun start). PRESIDENT CUP WINNERS Frank Sciannella congratulating the winner of the championship division along with Dave Bott who came in second and Joe Houk who came in third looking on. 1
MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT I want to start off by congratulating our 2015 President s Cup Club Champion, Bruce Deverman, for winning the Championship flight! The conditions on the second day of the tournament were very difficult with gale like conditions. As Bruce put it he made the fewest mistakes of the eleven men competing for the club championship. We had a total of 34 members enter the tournament in 2015 compared to 25 last year. Speaking of membership we have already had five new members join this year which keeps us on track of a growth rate of 2 new members per month. As of mid-february we had 88 members in the Association. At this rate we should easily go over a total of 100 members by the end of the year. It will be five years ago in April 2015 that the SBRMGA ByLaws were officially adopted by the first Board. There have been numerous actions taken by the five SBRMGA Boards since that time, all of which were documented in the minutes for each meeting. We thought it would be useful to everyone if we compiled all of those decisions into one document, made it an addendum to the ByLaws and maintained it so everyone can easily review actions taken by the Board. You should be able to find this addendum on our web site shortly with the ByLaws. I want to thank Doug Streuber who volunteered to go through the past five years of meeting minutes and create this reference document for the Association.Unfortunately I will not be seeing you on the golf course for a while due to recent rotator cuff surgery. It ll probably take a few months to get back to 100%, but I ll be back! Regards, Jack NEW MEMBERS A warm welcome to the following new members, we look forward to playing with youdennis Casey, Greg Byrne, Jeff Heitner, David Hansel, Mike Mycka, Paul Preston, Doug Rinke, Gerald Hause, Paul Lapotosky THE PRESIDENTS CUP The annual President Cup is the SBRMGA tournament that was scheduled this year for February 5 and February 12 with a round played on each day. A new feature for this year s tournament is The Championship Division where golfers with single digit handicaps play with no handicap modification. The summarized leader board for all flights is shown on page 3. 2
(1) (2) (3) (4) Here s Ron Noble (1) bombing one down the fairway, followed by Tim McCauley (2) imitating Camilo Villegas. Bill Lockett (3) not believing what he just did and Mike White (4) doing a happy dance after holing out from 100 yards out or maybe he was just running to the porta potty. The weather during the first day of the tournament was spectacular, sunshine and no wind. The second day of the tournament the sun was out but the wind was ferocious. Putts that should have been close to the pin scooted across the green along with vibrating teed up golf balls. The wind played havoc.golfers with a single digit handicap shot in the mid 80 s. The competition in the first three flights was very close as the difference between first and second was only one or two strokes. Again, congratulations to the winners of each flight, well done. The participants include many SBRMGA and SBRWGA members as well as non-club SBR golfers. Designed to be a social mixer and a way of getting to know golfing couples at the Ranch, this outing has grown in popularity and number of participants over the last 2 year with new participants joining in monthly. This outing is purely for fun with no specific games or prize pools and, therefore, no handicaps required. With couples golf, fun happens once a month. And you get to go to dinner after and tell tall tales about what a great shot you had hitting out of the desert. If you haven t tried it, you might want to consider it. This non-competitive golf outing is held on second Sunday of the month except on SBRMGA Special events that take place on Sunday. Winter, 12:30 shotgun starts with dinner at a local restaurant following golf. Summer, 8:00 a.m. shotgun starts with lunch at the Bistro following golf. $5 per person fee paid at pro shop, which is returned via winnings card to be used at the pro shop. To play, couples must sign-up for the SBR Couples Event in the request section AND notify Kim Seales via at kimseales@gmail.com. to confirm playing and dinner plans. Many thanks to Tony Seales for supplying this feature RULES REVIEW 4
From time to time everyone has hit a ball in a hazard. Many of the members of the SBRMGA know exactly what to do but some of us take liberties that are not correct. Here are the rules, 1. Grounding a club in a hazard. Pretty much everyone knows you can t ground your club in a sand trap. But it seems that not everyone knows this rule applies to any hazard. Arroyos are marked as lateral hazards and can not be treated as if it was simply a fairway. A lateral hazard, marked by red stakes, must be treated as any hazard and the club must not be grounded. 2. Taking practice strokes in a hazard. By itself, this is not a problem. However, you cannot touch anything in that hazard while doing so. Players can take short practice strokes in a sand trap without touching the sand. This is ok. But in a hazard with weeds, trees, cactus and all the other wonderful things we have around here, you have to be careful not to disturb anything. You are not allowed to move dirt, grass, weeds and everything else in sight while in the hazard. 3. Moving items in a hazard. We all know the rule about moving obstructions from around your ball while in the fairway. If you can do it without moving the ball, go ahead. But this doesn t apply in a hazard. Once you are in a hazard, you are stuck with whatever the Golf Gods have given you. You can t move sticks, weeds, rocks or any other kind of obstruction to improve your situation. Play it as it lies. The Rules of Golf say we may not test the ground in a hazard. Any touching of the ground with your club or your hand violates this rule. However, if you need to put your club or hand down to avoid falling, no penalty. Also, in an accommodation to those of us who are concerned about our pace of play, you can take more than one club into the hazard and place the extra clubs on the ground when you have decided which club to use. No foul there. You can ask your partner or competitor about a rule during play. If you have doubt about what you can do, ask. But in a hazard, if you avoid touching pretty much anything but the ball with your club you will be ok. Source: USGA Rules of Golf, Ball in Hazard; Prohibited Actions PACE OF PLAY The following pictures graphically demonstrate some of the errors, probably due to just not paying attention that many of us make that have the effect of slowing down the pace of play. These pictures are by and large self explanatory. Roughly speaking the common theme that runs through these pictures is that one golfer is doing something, addressing the ball, swinging or putting and his partner is just watching and is not getting ready to either take a shot or move along. It might not seem like much but if you are in a foursome and you get lulled into not paying attention all of a sudden you can lose contact with the group in front of you. It happened to me once and the assessed penalty cost me two strokes and some prize money. Many thanks Bill Moore for taking these pictures and his partner Rick Snowden 5

HUMOR Lady Luck was seldom kind to Sam. Although Sam had a real zest for life he was constantly beset by bad luck. He loved poker but poker did not love him; he played the stock market with great anticipation but always seemed to be the one who bought high and sold low. His life seemed to be full of more downs than ups. His greatest delight was his golf game. Not that Sam was a great golfer; in fact, he never managed to break 100, but the odd shot that somehow ended up in the general area he had in mind was enough to keep his hopes alive. Finally Sam became ill and passed away. But just before he died, he asked that his remains be cremated and his ashes be scattered just off the fairway on the ninth hole of his home course. Accordingly, a gathering assembled to carry out Sam's wishes. It was a bright sunny day and was going well. Then, as the ashes were being strewn... a gust of wind came up and... blew Sam out of bounds.
