Saddlebrooke Men s Golf Association Nov 2015 MESSAGE FROM BRUCE DEVERMAN The SBRMGA Secretary I know we've all been reminded many times to show our appreciation to those who do so much to enhance our lives but it never hurts to say thank you (and it doesn't reduce the balance of your Winnings Card). There are a lot of people that make our men's golf association a great group and a lot of fun throughout the year. And I will apologize right up front as I will not even try to recognize everyone that makes a contribution. I m just going to pick on a couple people. Harley Schlacter creates our weekly Thursday game. Coming up with the "game" is appreciated by all of us but all the work he does behind the scenes is what really takes his time. Making the pairings, verifying the handicaps, dealing with individual special needs (like I need to tee off early because my wife is having heart by-pass surgery at 1:00pm...stuff like that), dealing with cancellations, filling out foursomes at the last minute, etc. I'm sure I've missed a lot of the chores Harley does but he does it well and is always upbeat. I haven't noticed anyone volunteering for his job, so next time you see him, tell him THANK YOU! 2
Frank Sciannella organizes our special events (such as the Founder's Cup, the President's Cup, the Ryder Cup, the Community Golf Event, etc). I've noticed in my year here that at times Frank takes a lot of grief (only some of which he deserves). He basically does a lot of what Harley does (including the behind the scenes effort) just not on a weekly basis. So next time you see Frank (which might be in late September or October), tell him THANK YOU! Jack Gressingh is our Board President...and no he doesn't get paid anything to volunteer his time. Jack spends a lot of time on our men's golf association issues and does all his work with little or no appreciation. Given some of the issues that have arisen during 2015 in our association, I know that Jack would appreciate a big THANK YOU. In addition to his duties as President he has had a very difficult year with health issues and is now recuperating from his second shoulder surgery. Not only has he been sidelined from golf but his pickleball prowess is also in jeopardy. When he has fully recovered from both shoulder surgeries he will be a force to be reckoned with. As I said earlier, there are a lot people that enhance your lives here at the Ranch. George Kramer heads up our participation in the PIMA Cup and works hard behind the scenes on our website. A number of guys organize weekly golf groups for you. You know who they are...say THANKS. Your Board of Directors try to keep a low profile but they do spend some of their spare time trying to improve our golf experience here at the Ranch as well as contributing SBRMGA funds to worthwhile charities. So when you see people that are making a difference in your lives (from both a golf standpoint and otherwise) give them a pat on the back and say THANKS. Bruce 3
Saddlebrooke Men s Golf Association Nov 2015 SADDLEBROOKE MEN S GOLF COUPLES EVENT On 8 November the Annual Couples Golf Event and Dinner were held on a beautiful Arizona autumn day at the Ranch. We had 56 residents and guests participating in a modified Scramble game with a total of 14 four-person teams (two couples making up a team) competing in 2 flights. The format allowed a game in which every member of the team was able to contribute to the team score on each and every hole. The Scramble format has every member of each team teeing off on each hole and then the team chooses the best drive. From the point of the chosen drive, three members of the team hit the second shot (the person who hit the prior shot is not allowed to hit the next shot). Play continues in this manner until the ball is on the putting surface, and at that point, every player putts until the ball is holed. In addition, each player on the team is required to have at least three of their drives chosen during the round. This presents the team with a need to strategize whose shot will be 4
used and not just always chose the longest drive. The golf tournament was immediately followed by a happy hour and delicious barbeque dinner at the Cadillac Chaparral. We had 67 attendees for dinner- a big increase over last year. After a buffet dinner of bbq pork and bbq chicken, beans, cole slaw, potato salad, and rolls and butter the awards for the golf prizes were presented to the winners by Mike Jahaske and Ken Steinke. There were prizes for first, second, and third place for each of the 2 flights as well as prizes for closest to the pin for men, closest to the pin for women, longest putt for men, and longest putt for women. In addition, one of our major sponsors, Golf Cars of Arizona, furnished a brand new golf cart on display as an incentive for making a hole-in-one to take the cart home. Not surprisingly, no one made an ace on number 2, but the level of excitement was apparent as each player teed it up for their chance of winning a new shiny yellow golf cart. After a full afternoon of golf and sunshine and a delicious cowboy dinner, a tired and well-fed group of happy golfers headed home knowing there would be another chance on another day to try to win that new golf cart. 5
Saddlebrooke Men s Golf Association Nov 2015 I think Alex would putt better If her hands were closer together Somebody forgot to tell Mary that you use your putter not your foot GOLF COURSE IMPROVEMENT COMMITTEE The men's and ladies leagues have formed a joint sub-committee to work with the Robson staff on golf course improvements. The objective is to identify and recommend changes and upgrades in a priority that reflects the community's ideas and Robson long-term planning. Some of the changes you can expect see in the future are pretty straight forward and will be implemented by the maintenance staff. For example over the next year we hope to see several new trees around the tee boxes, with locations recommended by the subcommittee. Other changes beginning next year are course-wide upgrades to the bunkers, including liners and drains. This is will be part of a commercial contract awarded by Robson. Subcommittee members are meeting with the course architect prior to work beginning to make our recommendations on changes and priority. For the past few months, members of the sub-committee have 6
been informally asking for suggestions to add to our growing list. If you have ides you'd like to recommend please get in touch with Mark Klicker, Dave Bott, Bill Moore, Steve Thomson, Sam Rossi, Brenda Armenia or Colleen Carey. GOLF HUMOR There were several men in the locker room of a private club after finishing 18 holes. Suddenly, a cell phone that was on one of the benches rings. A man picks it up and the following conversation ensues: "Hello?" "Honey, It's me." "Sugar!" "Are you at the club?" "Yes." "Great! I am at the mall 2 blocks from where you are. I saw a beautiful mink coat... It is absolutely gorgeous!! Can I buy it?" "What's the price?" "Only $1,500" "Well, OK, go ahead and get it, if you like it that much..." "Ahhh and I also stopped by the Mercedes dealership and saw the 2015 at a really good price... and since we need to exchange the BMW that we bought last year..." "What price did he quote you?" "Only $60,000..." "OK, but for that price I want it with all the options." "Great!, before we hang up, something else..." "What?" "It might look like a lot, but I was reconciling your bank account and...i stopped by the real estate agent this morning and I saw the house we had looked at last year... it's on sale!! Remember? The one with a pool, English Garden, tennis court, acre of park area, beach front property..." "How much are they asking?" "Only $1,450, a 7
Saddlebrooke Men s Golf Association Nov 2015 magnificent price, and I see that we have that much in the bank to cover..." "Well, than go ahead and buy it, but just bid $1,400,000. OK?" "OK, sweetie... Thanks! I'll see you later!! I love you!!!" "Bye... I do too..." The man hangs up, and raises his hand while holding the phone and asks to all those present: "Does anyone know who this phone belongs to?" The FENCE that has been recently erected to protect golfers from errant pickle ball shots. As seen from the driving range 8
