2 P A G E 2 A CONVERSATION WITH OUR PRESIDENT AND VICE PRESIDENT Sitting down with Sam Rossi and Richard Osterlund, we began to discuss their goals and objectives for 2018 as the newly elected leaders of the SaddleBrooke Ranch Men s Golf Association. The two stated they were honored to have been elected into leadership positions of the SBRMGA. Their primary goal for this year is to ensure continued support of the three purposes of the Association as they were envisioned by the Founding members. The first is to promote, stimulate and maintain interest in golf at the Saddle- Brooke Ranch Golf Club. With the dynamic growth of residents at the Ranch, we want to ensure that residents with a passion for the game of golf feel welcomed when they join the SBRMGA. We also want our residents that may be casual golfers or even just beginning to golf to feel welcomed joining the SBRMGA. The second is to promote good fellowship among the members of the Men s Golf Association. Our weekly events and special events teams are doing a terrific job of providing our members with a variety of enjoyable, competitive opportunities. We also provide our members opportunities to compete against other local clubs at different venues through our PIMA Cup participation. The third objective is to enhance the social and recreational lives of the Saddle- Brooke Ranch Property Owners. We encourage our members to gather in the Bistro after our weekly events. The social interaction and comradery shared after the event is just as important as the event itself. Also, one of our goals is to improve our interaction with the SBRWGA. We are excited to announce that we are currently working with the Women s Golf Association to schedule our first joint golf event. We are planning to have a competitive golf tournament and social gathering after the event. Sam and Rich, are there any final thoughts you would like to address? We just want to emphasize our overall goal is to ensure the SBRMGA continues to be a dynamic, growing organization for our residents. Maintaining a strong Association is important to the long term social and recreational opportunities at SaddleBrooke Ranch. T H E S C O R E C A R D

3 P A G E 3 PRO S CORNER - SHORT GAME TIPS FOR SUCCESS We have all heard that the short game portion of golf can consist of 50% to 60% of the strokes taken in a round of golf. That is a hefty portion of the game and really puts the leverage onto improving short game technique for better scores, but more importantly, more enjoyment of the game! Besides putting, chips and short pitches are the most common type of shot required in the battle to reduce strokes per hole. It doesn t matter what club you choose or whether you plan to play a low running shot or a high and quickly stopping shot, the basics in good technique are identical. There are three elements regarding address with each shot and they are; ball position, shaft angle, and aim. In making the stroke, the most important element to utilize is controlling distance through stroke length and not by using power created by speed of the consistent speed and stroke or hitting it hard or easy. Below I will describe each one of these points in more detail. tempo while Ball Position utilizing one ball position and consistently spotting the ball is paramount varying the to good contact. If the ball is not placed the same with each swing the player has to adjust the swing s release point and inconsistent contact will occur. stroke length Shaft Angle Every shot with good contact with have the shaft of the club leaning towards the target. In the short game especially, it is important to incorporate this element into your set up. Aim Employing good aim wherein the body line is parallel to the target line allows the club to release naturally without manipulation of the club towards the target which also enhances good contact and distance control. Stroke Method utilizing a consistent speed and tempo while varying the stroke length is the most consistent and physically simplest way to control distance, especially under pressure. This style also works very well with maintaining shaft angle through the stroke and finding the golf ball for a good strike. I hope this has shed some light on the path to a better short game! 4 P A G E 4 GOOD TO KNOW A COUPLE OF LOCAL RULES RELIEF FROM THE LANDSCAPE GARDENS which are located throughout the course. If a player s ball lies within the garden or if the garden interferes with the player s stance or intended swing, a player must take relief under Rule This relief will be defined as follows: determine the nearest point of relief, no closer to the hole or in a hazard, the player will lift and drop the ball one club length with no penalty. It should be noted that most Landscape Gardens have tall cactus planted in their area and are located adjacent to cart paths. If the nearest point of relief is either behind a cactus or located on the cart path, a player must drop their ball at that spot. You may then take additional relief off the cart path. A player may determine an Unplayable Lie after the drop and apply Rule 28. LOW AREAS FOR DRAINAGE: Located within the SaddleBrooke Ranch Golf Course are low areas that accumulate water during the rainy seasons and are dry during the rest of the year. A good example of these areas is on hole 15, left hand side of the cart path, just after the Garden Area. These areas are part of the golf course and are subject to the rules of golf. Unless the area is staked off, a player who hits their ball in these areas must play it as it lies. Depending on the time of the year, different rules will apply for different conditions. WET CONDITIONS: If a player s ball enters one of these low areas and standing water is present, that player may deem their ball unplayable due to casual water rule and take relief, without penalty, under Rule Relief will be defined as follows: determine the nearest point of relief, no closer to the hole or in a hazard, the player will lift, clean and drop the ball one club length with no penalty. These areas are vast in size and a player s ball could be lost within the standing water or as the area starts to dry out a player s stance could become unstable due to the soft soil conditions. Local rule will stipulate that relief with no penalty may be taken for these conditions. DRY CONDITIONS: If a player s ball settles in this area during the dry season when no standing water is present, the player cannot declare Ball in Casual Water and will have to play their ball as it lies. Even as grasses/weeds develop within these areas during the dry months, no relief may be taken. A player may declare their ball Unplayable Lie at any time and apply Rule 28. 7 P A G E 7 THE SHAG BAG The old duffer and his SHAG BAG gets a mulligan this month. Let s call it first tee jitters or maybe just a swing and a miss. One of our loyal members caught the SHAG BAG or maybe just tried to do it right and found it missing. Where is the Sand Box first tee, fourth hole cart path (a can), tenth tee, thirteen cart path (can) fill up your bottle for keeping your course the way you want others to keep it. Hacker s corner our SaddleBrooke Ranch Golf Club has at least two. Check out the par threes 2 & 12 right side front collects tee shots. Credits to many but especially Matt. Golfer s Man Card - first time SHAG BAG issue. Ball in arroyo under the paddle of one prickly pear with a stand of prickly pear directly in front. The fearless golfer with hybrid in hand executes a near perfect shot on # 10 to the green. Result was a Ryder Cup hole halved. Credit Frank. The SHAG BAG hopes to provide a light hearted It s the second edition of the Shag Bag. If our Shag Bag is ever O.B. we ll tee it up and hit it again. Contributions are always appreciated, thanks to all. Golf is an everyday event with often unintended consequences.
