2 Saddlebrooke Men s Golf Association June 2016 MESSAGE FROM the Sponsorship Chairmen Ted Weirman GOLFING AT THE RANCH When Mike Koen asked me to give my impression of Golf at Saddlebrooke Ranch, I wasn t sure and still am not sure why anyone cares what I think!! I really do enjoy golfing at the Ranch and particularly in the great Thursday games that Harley, Jack, Frank and others have made up over the years!! I hear comments both positive and negative about course conditions, Handicap fairness, which tees we play from, today s game just to name a few. If I start to slip into a negative area, my wife will remind me that we live in a great place with great people, and are still relatively healthy - That being the case, at least for the present, I just appreciate the opportunity to play golf with great guys!! Don t get me wrong, I am also glad there are those that recognize ways it can be better and I truly appreciate 2

3 Saddlebrooke Ranch Men s Golf Association June 2016 that. At least in golf, I do not feel my level of experience or expertise in golf can really offer any improvement to what we have now!! So, that being said, I do have one thing that I thought when I was struggling with something to say in this article. We have great individual championships Founders Cup, Presidents Cup, and even the Couples Event, and of course the Ryder Cup! While golf is an individual game, I think we all enjoy the comradery of a good team game!! We have those on occasion and are truly fun events. But how about a Team Championship. It needs to be a game where all players can contribute, like ABCD alternate partner that we do at times. Let s have an annual Team Championship spread over two Thursdays. You would have all interested players sign up and commit to two consecutive Thursdays. Divide players into categories (A/B/C/ D) and have one category be captain of a team and then let the captains pick their team in a private session (so I don t find out I was the last one picked!!) It is not quite as big of a team as the Ryder Cup but I believe we could have a lot of fun with something like this. Plus four guys could be Club Champions instead of just one!! While I hope most of us could commit to two consecutive Thursdays, I am sure that issue can be addressed with subs. To finish, I would be very remiss if I did not mention our sponsors. But we also have many more sponsors that we should, when possible, patronize and thank them for their support!! 4 Saddlebrooke Men s Golf Association June 2016 IRONS VS HYBRIDS Hybrids were originally intended to replace long irons, because many players have trouble hitting the ball in the air with the lesslofted clubs. Additionally, in an effort to achieve more distance, golf manufacturers have decreased iron club lofts over the years and have also decreased golf ball spin. Both trends have made long irons almost unplayable for many casual golfers. Hybrids are more forgiving than the irons they replace, featuring larger sweet spots and a deeper center of gravity, which helps you get the ball into the air. Distance Hybrid clubs are numbered and are generally designed to replace the iron with the same number for example, a 3-hybrid would replace a 3-iron. However, a typical golfer will likely hit the ball a bit farther with a hybrid than with an iron of the same number. In many cases, a hybrid will outperform the same-numbered iron by 5 to 8 yards. PGA professional Rick Martino, writing on the PGA website, says the hybrid's lower and deeper center of gravity relative to a comparable iron "allows for shots that carry a greater distance but roll less." The maximum distance a golfer can hit a ball with a particular club will vary widely, depending on the golfer s experience and skill. However, the LPGA estimates that men typically can hit a 3-iron or 3-hybrid a maximum of 170 to 220 yards, while women can hit the same clubs a maximum of 125 to 180 yards. The 4-iron and 4- hybrid estimates are 160 to 210 yards for men and 120 to 170 yards 4

The 5-iron and 5-hybrid ranges are 150 to 200 yards for men and 115 to 160 yards for women, while the 6-iron or 6-hybrid ranges are 140 to 190 yards for men and 110 to 150 yards for women. Accuracy Hybrid clubs are more tolerant of miss-hits than their counterpart irons, so a casual player will likely hit the ball farther, on average, with a hybrid than a standard iron. While your longest 3- hybrid shot probably won t travel much farther than your longest 3- iron shot, an average golfer will likely reach his peak distance more often with a hybrid than with a standard iron. For many players, therefore, it may make sense to replace a specific iron with the next- highest number of hybrid for example, to replace a 3-iron with a 4- hybrid. Trajectory Hybrid clubheads are larger than standard iron clubheads and boast a lower and deeper center of gravity. These traits make it easier to hit the ball in the air with a hybrid than with its counterpart iron. For example, your typical 3-hybrid shots will have a higher trajectory than your typical 3-iron shots. As a result, the hybrid is usually better for approach shots, as the higher trajectory gives your shot a better chance to hold the green. Properly hit irons may be better for a second shot on a par 5, because the lower trajectory typically allows the ball to roll farther, assuming you keep the shot in the fairway. Technique While hybrid clubs offer many advantages, they must be used correctly. In the fairway, hybrid clubs should be played as if they were irons, rather than woods. Set up with the ball in mid-stance and swing down on the ball, taking a divot just beyond the ball s position. Tee the ball up lower than usual when using a hybrid for your tee shot, 5

6 Saddlebrooke Men s Golf Association June 2016 with no more than a quarter of the ball above clubhead level. When hitting a hybrid off the tee, swing as if you were hitting a fairway wood with a level, sweeping motion rather than hitting the ball on an upswing as you would with a driver. For Paul making holes in one a yearly event. About one year ago Paul had a hole in one at a Phoenix golf club. Not satisfied with that Paul shot another one this past April. This most recent one was made on first day of "Roadrunner " 7

8 Saddlebrooke Men s Golf Association June 2016 Member tournament in late April. Jim Grady was Paul s partner and a witness in their foursome. SADDLEBROOKE #2 is the hole adjacent to Saddlebrooke Blvd with a pond in front. Karl s hole in hole happened on June 23 during one of the weekly Thursday tournaments at the Ranch Golf course. Karl made his hole in one on hole number 2. Credit should go to Sam Rossi as Karl claimed he talked the ball into the hole. Karl is new to the SBRMGA, what a great start.
