CONTENTS THE TEEING GROUND GOLF S NEW RULES MAJOR CHANGES November 2018 TAKING RELIEF ELIMINATION OF OPPOSITE SIDE RELIEF TAKING RELIEF PROCEDURE FOR TAKING BACK-ON -THE-LINE RELIEF WHOA THAT S SOME GOLF BY POPULAR DE- MAND & THE SHAG BAG ANNUAL MEM- BERSHIP MEETING JUST FOR US GOLFERS OUTREACH PART- NERS THE TEEING GROUND With the winter solstice rapidly approaching we have much to celebrate. The transition to our winter rye has proceeded remarkably well. The real test may be the regrowth of our Bermuda. Regardless it certainly is great golfing today. Big dates coming up. December 1st we start the Thursday 9:00 AM shotguns. So sleep in and catch some better rays when arriving at the course. December 5th is the big SALE at the Pro Shop. Spin the wheel and see if you are an even bigger winner. Buy it while its on hand. December 6th is the Holiday Event. We have a near sell out. At 156 attending the MGA books the largest private function to date in the SOL ballroom. With the sun setting earlier it is a great time to continue our look at the USGA Rules Changes for Just as we promised we re keeping them brief, interspersed, maybe even hidden and of course topically pertinent to our track at the Ranch. We may even keep them thorough enough to provide each golfer some insight. It s always great to tee it up and swing away just remember if the round is postable please post.

Page 2 GOLF S NEW RULES MAJOR CHANGES Refresher There are nine areas of major changes. These include 1) ball at rest, 2) ball in motion, 3) taking relief, 4) areas of the course, 5) equipment, 6) playing a ball, 7)when to play during a round, 8) player behavior, and 9) new local rule. Each of these areas has several changes. It would be easy to simply refer all golfers to the web site such as, but what then would we do for a another month of? So this month we ll briefly focus on one of the changes for (1) ball at rest, (3) taking relief, and two of the changes from (4) areas of the course. As long as we are in Refresher mode Remember General Area, Teeing Area, Bunkers, Penalty Area and Putting Green. It s our terminology as we move forward. It s still not all starched collars or buttoned down action. We may be able to move, touch and replace without penalty. Not a gimmie but a darn sight better than a stroke or two penalty. Could be the difference between in the $$$ and a contribution to your fellow competitor. It s on to the important stuff... September SCORECARD highlights only four of the major changes: Elimination of Opposite Side Relief for Red Penalty Areas Procedure for Taking Back-On-The-Line Relief Before we get to the first tee let s know that as of 2019 there are no hazards in golf. That s right! We can enjoy our golf without concern for hazards. We may, though, need to understand Penalty Areas. Not to worry, after all, what s a stroke or two here and there between friends. CONTINUED PAGE 3

Page 3 TAKING RELIEF ELIMINATION OF OPPOSITE SIDE RELIEF FOR RED PENALTY AREAS 2019 Rule: Rule 17.1d will remove the option to take relief on the opposite side of a red penalty area (the new term that will include what is today called a lateral water hazard): This means that, when a ball is in a red penalty area, the player will have three options for relief (all for a one-stroke penalty) rather than four options as today. But a Committee could still adopt a Local Rule allowing opposite side relief on those holes where it believes the other relief options are not viable. Reasons for Change: Opposite side relief is a complicated option that many players are not familiar with and that is seldom used. The primary purpose behind this relief was to give an extra relief option for the unusual cases where neither back-on-the-line relief (Rule 26-1b) nor lateral relief on the side where the ball entered the water hazard (Rule 26-1c(i)) seem viable and the player s only realistic option is to take relief under penalty of stroke and distance (Rule 26-1a). In practice, opposite side relief is often taken when a player actually has adequate relief under one or both of the other relief options and thus serves only to give an unnecessary extra option that at times can seem too advantageous. This change will also help avoid any concern that, with the expanded use of red penalty areas, a player might be able to use the opposite side option to drop on the green side of the penalty area, thereby avoiding the challenge of having to play over the penalty area.

Page 4 TAKING RELIEF PROCEDURE FOR TAKING BACK-ON-THE-LINE RELIEF 2019 Rule: Players will continue to drop a ball when taking relief, but the dropping procedure will be changed in several ways as detailed in Rule 14.3: The focus of the dropping procedure will be on a specific relief area set by the Rule under which relief is being taken and will be either one or two club-lengths from a reference point (and may have certain other limitations). The ball will need only to be dropped in and come to rest in the relief area; and there will be no re-drop requirement if the dropped ball accidentally hits a person or object after hitting the ground but before coming to rest in the relief area. If the dropped ball comes to rest outside the relief area, it will be dropped a second time; if it comes to rest outside the relief area after being dropped a second time it will be placed where it first touched the ground. If the placed ball will not come to rest on that spot after two attempts, the player will then place the ball on the nearest spot (not nearer the hole) where it will come to rest. Reasons for Change: The new procedure will mean there will be greater consistency across all relief procedures, making it simpler for players to know where and how to drop a ball: The new procedure when dropping with reference to a spot will be to drop a ball anywhere in a relief area measured one or two club-lengths from (but not nearer the hole than) that spot. Not to worry page 5 is lighter fare.

Page 5 WHOA THAT S SOME GOLF ROBSON CHALLENGE CUP & FOUNDERS CUP Robson Challenge Cup The SaddleBrooke Ranch Golf Club and the Men s Golf Association hosted the 2018 Robson Challenge Cup. The four Robson communities, Pebble Creek, Robson Ranch, Quail Creek and SaddleBrooke Ranch, Men s Golf Associations came together with each presenting 15 members and a pro to compete for the Robson Cup. Your MGA was host and victor. The margin was slim but it s golf and its not how/how much but results that count. Pictured below (L to R) are the SBRMGA golfers that placed:mike Jahaske (pro), Rich Osterlund, Ed Robertson, Matt Nelson, Larry Tipton, Karl Knight and Anthony Wells. Not pictured is Bill Klappenbach. Continued on page 6

Page 6 ROBSON CHALLENGE CUP - CONTINUED Pictured below is the entire SaddleBrooke Ranch Robson Challenge Cup Team. Congratulations to all golfers. Bragging rights are good for a year. Let s look forward to 2019 and a REPEAT! See Founders Cup Tournament page 7.

Page 7 FOUNDERS CUP TOURNAMENT The 7th annual Founders Cup Tournament was recently completed. The two day 36 hole full handicap competition was an unqualified success. Seventy-one of our members who qualified signed up to compete for the Championship surpassing prior years entries. The golf was intense as the entire field had at least one of the two rounds in red numbers. The overall Champion with a score of 129 (15 under) was Ron Knapp. GREAT GOLFING - CONGRATULATIONS RON. Founders Cup Champion Ron Knapp with Mike Jahaske, PGA Professional

Page 11 BY POPULAR DEMAND & THE SHAG BAG HOLIDAY CHEER The details are complete tickets have been sold we are looking forward to some Holiday Cheer December 6th is fast approaching the MGA s First Holiday Event in the new club house is neigh. Chatter has it that it s a sell out. Dinner and entertainment in our new ballroom putting our members in the holiday spirit. The Shagmeister keeps listening to his golfing partners and clearly the range players, practice green players and of course the pitch and chip contingent. How many times on one hole do you need to hit a provi but still find your original ball in time? Someone did 3x Have you heard that the second shot is always easier? Maybe not Let s review: Tee shot far right and hits provisional, the provisional is further right in the weeds/lost, finds original tee ball in play proceeds to smooth it left possibly OB, jacks a provisional on beautiful arc right into the desert LOST, finds first ball in bounds and neatly drops his third shot 5 feet from the hole and one putts for BIRDIE! Potential 10+ but a birdie and saved SKIN! Congrats Sam and too bad Brian, Ron and Dave.

Page 12 ANNUAL MEMBERSHIPMEETING The Annual Membership Meeting was held following the Founders Cup Tournament.. Minutes of the meeting are available on the SBRMGA website under the Communications Tab. The item engendering most discussion was the 2019 USGA option allowing courses to adopt an alternative stroke and distance rule. A motion was made from the floor that the MGA is to proceed with discussions with the WGA, Greens Committee, and Mike Jahaske (pro) in an effort to reach a unanimous agreement. Thus adding this rule to our local rules. Motion passed unanimously. The pictures that follow are a testament to the working meeting.

Page 14 JUST FOR US GOLFERS set up, took a full back swing and shanked one a tad right. You received limited rules updates this month but do not despair there is more to come. You re getting some of the best rules advice available. The web site link was included and the rules changes noted were few and hopefully informative without bogging you down. Hey you got this far so something worked. OK the Shagmeister gets it. We ll upgrade the Shag Bag in December to catch everyone up on such things as the Behavior Rules elements. A simple example not directly addressed includes the helicopter follow-through and the warrior spearfollow through. Quite possibly you may know someone that has if not perfected at the very least made a valiant effort with these specialty throws. Working to make your SBRMGA experience more enjoyable. THE SHAGMEISTER faintly recalls that it takes a village to achieve something special. At the SBRMGA it just takes members working together. IT S A GREAT TIME TO BE A MEMBER. STEP UP, SIGN UP, TEE UP, SWING AWAY
