1 NINERS NOTES September 2018 Vol. 19 Issue 9 Editor ~ Maria Byers President s Message for September Hopefully we have made it through the heat of the summer and the temperatures are slowly beginning to come down. The golf courses are in beautiful shape, lush and green. The sand trap project on SaddleBrooke is nearing completion. It has been fun not having to worry about landing in a sand trap since they have all been ground under repair but one by one they are coming back into play. The new sand is fluffy and may take some time getting used to but I love the texture. Our next event is LAGOS with the 18-holers on September 25 th. Pat Avery is our liaison. The sign up is a little different than normal so read the information Pat has included later in the newsletter. In October there are three dates to remember. October 9 will be our general meeting and luncheon. October 22 will be an opportunity to learn about the new rules from the USGA. Details about times and locations will come later. Registration: Sign-up using the provided sign-up forms on the SBGWA-18 bulletin Board. Place form and check into the SBWGA-18 drawer. Competition: 9-Hole Shamble All players hit their drive. Select the best drive minimum one drive per player. Each player plays her ball in from the selected drive location. 4 Pace of Play, Round Two We continue to have issues with the pace of play on league days. For 9 holes we should be able to complete the round in 2 hours and 5 minutes. If there are restrictions such as cart path only we should be able to complete the round in 2 hours and 15 minutes. Unfortunately, recently, we had rounds of 2 hours and 45 minutes! This is really unacceptable and unfair to the golfers who follow. According to the USGA, pace of play is not about hurrying up or rushing around the course. It is simply about being more efficient Below you will find some ideas to assist in more efficient play. These ideas come from the HOA 1 golf rules, the USGA, and ideas suggested by members. Be ready to play when it is your turn. Carry an extra ball in your pocket in case you need to hit a provisional ball. Think ahead and carry extra clubs to your ball so you will not have to return to the cart for a different club. Also, take your putter when you are near the green. Play ready golf, particularly if a player is looking for a lost ball. That means if you are ready and no one is in the way, hit your ball even if it is not your turn. Limit the time you look for a lost ball to no more than 5 minutes. If you think your ball might be lost, hit a provisional ball before you leave the area. After finishing a hole, hold your clubs as you ride to the next hole and bag them at the next hole. Have the passenger keep score so the driver can move to the next hole Limit your practice swings. On cart-path only holes, take multiple clubs with you so you don t have to go back to the cart for an additional club. If a member of your group keeps finding the sand, you can assist by raking the trap while she finishes the hole.

5 Remember, particularly on SaddleBrooke #2, our limit is 2 times par plus two. That means if you have 8 strokes and you are not on the green (on SB 2) you must pick up and disqualify yourself from that day s sweeps. If you get to the green with 7 strokes you have one putt left. If you putt the ball 6 from the hole, you still pick up and become disqualified. Even if you are allowed 10 strokes per ESC, our local rule is par times two plus 2. You should always be able to see the group ahead of you, either in the fairway or on the green. If the group in front of you is ahead by a hole, you may need to skip a hole. If this happens you can still take a score (par plus your pops for the hole) but all the members of your group must disqualify themselves from the day s sweeps. Members of a group need to keep each other moving along at a steady pace. If members have other ideas to speed up play, please share them with us. Save the dates for Ventana Canyon April 1 ( no Foolin ) and Mountian View (Saddlebrooke 2) March 5 th. Participation was fair this year. We played at the Views, Vistoso Golf Club, The Highlands at Dove Mountain and Oro Valley C.C. Oro Valley had the best turn out and the others only had 4 or 5 of our Niners attend. All the events were well organized and fun. Our Niners group placed in the money at every event which was great!! Please continue to watch for more Save the Dates as the season progresses. Consider participating in these events. ALL LEVELS ARE WELCOME that s why we have handicaps! It s fun, interesting to play different courses and the PRIZES are great! 6 Questions What is Equitable Stroke Control (ESC)? Definitions ESC is an adjustment of individual hole scores (for handicap purposes) in order to make handicaps more representative of a player's potential ability. ESC is applied after the round and is only used when the actual score or the most likely score exceeds a player s maximum number. ESC sets a limit to the number of strokes a player can take on a hole depending on Course Handicap. We can see from this definition that ESC and most likely score are not the same. What is a most likely score? A most likely score is the number of strokes already taken, plus in the player's best judgment, the number of strokes needed to complete the hole from that point more than half the time. The most likely score should have an "X" preceding the number. What if my round is rained out? You can post your score after completing 7 holes. The scores of the remaining two holes are determined by your handicap and the pop chart for that course. The pops for the holes are added to the par for the holes to determine the number of strokes for those holes. You can find a Pop Chart in our handbook. Sheryl Nugent Rules Chair
