1 OFWW SEPTEMBER NEWSLETTER KCC Issue No. 353 September 1, 2018 Our OFWW web site is ONLY on holes marked Cart Path Only may you: Lift, clean, and place your ball within one scorecard length (12 inches), through the green, except for hazards and greens If your ball is in the rough, you may move it to another spot in the rough. If your ball is in the fairway, you may move it to another spot in the fairway. If your ball is on the fringe of the green, you may not move it onto the green. Otherwise, play will be according to USGA rules, playing the ball down with the exception that: putts within one scorecard length of the closest edge of the hole may be picked up, counting as one stroke and considered holed out. Your usual Saturday practice of giving putts that are barely on the green is not allowed. If you pick up on a hole: you will be given an "X" on that hole, both for your gross and for your net you will be eliminated from the overall net score competition. 2 Thursday 9/27 Lake LP **LP = Limited Playday. The purpose of a limited Playday is to have a block of tee times for OFWW members who are not playing an interclub match that day. LP will not count as an OFWW Playday. Tee Time Sign-ups. The sign-up sheet will be available in the Pro Shop beginning mid-day Friday and all day Saturday and Sunday and on Tuesday, beginning at 7:30 am. The first tee time is 8:00 am. Please reserve one slot in the first foursome for the OFWW scorer. CONGRATULATIONS TO JB BELL On our July 24 Playday, JB Bell shot his age (79)!!! Way to go JB!!! If anyone does that, please let me know. HOW TO KEEP SCORE ON PLAYDAYS When you start the round, do something to indicate on the scorecard the stroke(s) each player gets on each hole by penciling in 1, 2, or 3 little dots or 1, 2, or 3 little vertical lines or something similar - on the holes where a player gets a stroke(s). After a hole is completed - and at the next tee box, NOT alongside the green you just finished - write down the player s gross AND net scores on each hole so that, when it comes to reporting skins for the players at the scorer s table, you can quickly say what the net/hole-by-hole scores are. As an example, if a player gets no strokes on a hole and has a 5, you'd write in a 5 - for his gross - and a 5 - for his net. If he gets a stroke on a hole and has a 5, you'd write in a 5 - for his gross - and a 4 - for his net. OFWW OFFICERS

3 There are a number of OFWW Board positions where current officers will be stepping down at the end of the year. We need volunteers to fill the following positions: Vice-President Secretary Lake Team Captain In the case of the Lake Team inter-club captain, Dave Lockwood will stay on through 2019 but needs a co-captain to learn the ropes in 2019 and then take over as captain in The responsibilities of each of these positions is described in the OFWW by-laws which can be found on our website. None of the officer positions takes an inordinate amount of time, but the efficient functioning of the OFWW and its events is dependent on the responsibilities of these positions being executed. If you are interested in any of these positions, please contact Kent Dixon. BASH SEPTEMBER 18 The September 2018 event will be Tuesday, September 18 on the Lake Course with an 8:30 am shotgun start. Check in at the white tent between 7 and 8. The format will be 2 best ball. Everyone plays their own ball, record all gross scores for the 4-some, then record the 2 low nets for the team score. Please sign up on the OFWW web page before noon on Monday, September 17. See the web page for more details. You may join the pot, which is awarded to the next pot member to get an ace, by depositing $5 with the scorer at any Playday. The list of Pot members on the web page has been updated. GOOD AND BAD EXERCISES FOR GOLFERS We all religiously hit the gym, right? For those of you who do or don t try this take a strong rubber band not the kind you find in a drawer but one you find at a gym, attach it to a pole that won t give, hold the band in your hands, and with your feet flat on the floor, turn several times like you re taking a back swing. Then reverse it so it s like you re following through. If you're interested in getting more fit around your golf game, there's a trainer at the Kingwood gym - Niki Brown - who's certified by Titelist to teach golf-related exercises. I've scheduled some sessions with her (had 2 so far) and can say that my golf game has gotten a bit better, hitting the ball a bit farther than I recently have. Now if she could only give me some putting-related exercises! WELCOME NEW MEMBERS The OFWW currently has 173 members. Please welcome our newest members, Ronnie Bulanek and Patrick Freeh, and remember to invite your

5 retired friends to sign up for OFWW at and join us on the course. STARTER DUTY All OFWW members are assigned Starter duties for Tuesday or Thursday regular Playdays during the year. Charlie DeVoe assigns the Starters and you will receive your Starter assignment notice via asking for your confirmation. If you are unable to serve on your assigned Playday, please contact another Starter for that month and switch assignments. As a member of OFWW, you are required to serve as a Starter (which means about once a year). When a Starter does not show, it is disruptive to our play. Thanks for stepping up to the plate when it is your turn to be the Starter. FREQUENTLY REPEATED MESSAGES: PLAYDAY HANDICAP GROUPINGS The current groupings are: Low = <16; Middle = 17-23; High = >24 The Board continues to review the Playday handicap grouping participation numbers and will maintain the current handicap groupings based on participation results for the past several weeks. HIGH HANDICAP GROUP SILVER/FORWARD TEES All players have the option of playing from the Silver/Forward tees if their handicap index plus age equals 95, and must play with their Silver/Forward tee handicap. Further, any reduction in handicap (i.e., 24 reduced to a 23 due to Silver/Forward tee adjustment) will NOT move the player from a higher handicap group to a lower handicap group. You can check your handicap for all tees on the OFWW webpage. PLAYDAY SCORES On regular Playdays, a Score Sheet will be on the scoring table. Please write down your name and your ESC-adjusted score on the Score Sheet. These scores will be posted to the GHIN system by Charlie DeVoe. If you post your own scores to the GHIN system, 1) write down your name and ESC score, then 2) cross out your name and score so we know you re posting your score. ESC (Equitable Stroke Control) is an adjustment of individual hole scores in

6 order to make handicaps more representative of a player's potential ability. On the scorecard, record the score you actually shot, but when it comes to posting your score in the GHIN system, post the score in accordance with the table below. For example, if your handicap is in the range and you take a 10 on a hole, pur down a 10 on your scorecard but when you post your score in the GHIN system, you should change the 10 to a 7. Below is the maximum number of strokes a player can take: WHERE DO I GET MY STROKES? Course Handicap Maximum Number 9 or less Double Bogey and above 10 A couple questions came up recently about where one gets strokes if playing from the Silver/Forward tees. The answer is: ALL MEN, REGARDLESS OF THE TEES THEY RE PLAYING GOLD, BLUE, WHITE OR SILVER GET THE STROKES SHOWN NEAR THE TOP OF THE SCORECARDS IN THE HANDICAP LINE, AND NOT IN THE HANDICAP LINE NEAR THE BOTTOM OF THE CARDS. So, for the Forest Course, a guy would get a stroke on the first hole if he had at least a 13 handicap. On the Marsh and Lake Courses, a guy would get a stroke on the first hole if he had at least a 7 handicap. On the Island Course, a guy would get a stroke on the first hole if he had at least a 12 handicap. FUNNY FOR THE MONTH
