1 2016 AWGA Annual Meeting and Recognition Dinner January 26, 2016 Wild Horse Pass Hotel and Casino Player of the Year Hannah O Sullivan Junior Golf Association of Arizona Hannah O Sullivan, the 17 year old phenom now living in Chandler, made quite an impression on the women s golf scene in In February Hannah won the LPGA Symetra Tour Gateway Classic at Longbow Golf Club, becoming the youngest winner in LPGA Symetra Tour history and the first amateur to win since She went on to a second-place finish in the US Women s Four-Ball Championship at Bandon Dunes in April, and made the cut at the US Women s Open in July. But her greatest accomplishment came in August when she came back from an early deficit in the 36-hole final match to capture the National Title at the US Women s Amateur Championship. With additional wins at the AJGA Winn Grips Heather Farr Classic hosted by Longbow Golf Club, AJGA Rolex Girls Junior Championship, AJGA Rolex Tournament of Champions, Junior Solheim Cup, and several others, she became the topranked American women s amateur and number two in the world. Among the goals she achieved was being named the 2015 Rolex Junior Player of the Year. Presenter Bob McNichols and Hannah O Sullivan Senior Player of the Year Kelly Loeb Omni National GC It s not often that you hear someone say I couldn t wait to turn 50! But that was exactly how Kelly Loeb felt about turning the big Five-Oh, since it allowed her to compete in Seniors golf tournaments for the first time. Just a couple of weeks after her birthday she took advantage of her relative youthfulness in the category by coming in second in the Senior Division of the AWGA Match Play Championship. A few months later she qualified for the USGA Senior Women s Amateur in her first year of eligibility. In October, Kelly came in a respectable fourth at the AWGA State Amateur Seniors Championship, in a flight that boasted three former Champions. She closed out the year in grand fashion, finishing first in the City Women s Championship. Kelly Loeb AWGA Rep of the Year Charlotte James SaddleBrooke GC 9 ers Barbara Johnson, the SaddleBrooke Lady Niners Past President says that since Charlotte joined the club in 2008 she has been an invaluable asset. She served as Treasurer from , was Tournament Chair in , and took that job over again at the end of At their club, the Tournament Chair is also the AWGA Rep, and when Charlotte first became the AWGA Rep in 2012, she made a point to get AWGA Directories into as many members hands as possible. She also convinced the Board of Directors to provide Rules books for all members. She posts items to the bulletin board and website, writes an article every month for the newsletter, and makes members aware that they re part of a larger women s organization - the AWGA. Presenter Barbara Johnson and Charlotte James 2015 Host Club of the Year Forest Highlands Flagstaff Flagstaff s Forest Highlands is a first-class course that boasts breathtaking mountain views and spectacular scenery. During October s Scotch Play, however, thunderstorms made those views hard to come by. If not for their hardworking staff it could have been a dreary event, especially when the second day of play was cancelled after only a few holes due to lightning. But the Forest Highlands staff was able to mitigate the effects of the foul weather and provide a pleasant experience for all. Forest Highlands commitment to women golfers has earned them a GEM award every year since the award was created. Club member Peggy Iacobelli likes that pros often play with the ladies groups and stay for lunch, and that tee times are as available for women as they are for men. She also says players are greeted with a friendly smile and a "how was your round" at the conclusion of play. This is what Matt Bailey calls The Forest Highlands Experience, which is their way of making sure each person feels welcomed, comfortable, and knows that their needs will be met. Presenter Barbara Simmons and Bill Griffon
2 Dorothy Pease Achievement Award Rose Nehring Dell Urich GC The Dorothy Pease Achievement Award was created in 2011 to honor women prominent in our Arizona golf community who, like Dorothy herself, exemplify the spirit of the game. From that beginning, Rose s whirlwind of promoting junior golf began. She became a regular volunteer at junior golf clinics and tournaments. She helped establish the Roadrunners Girls Golf Club, serving as Director from Under her leadership they created a developmental golf program designed for girls ages 6 years and older. In 1995, Rose and a group of volunteers also established the Southern Arizona Junior Golf Association, and she served on their board for five years. A year later Rose was selected to be Team Captain for Arizona s Girls Junior Americas Cup team, a position she held for 19 consecutive years. Rose has served on the Boards of the Girls Junior Americas Cup and Junior Golf Association of Arizona, and after helping bring the LPGA*USGA Girls Golf program to in 2007 was named the Site Director there, a position she held from Presenter Tom Cunningham and Rose Nehring Kathy Ehrlich Volunteer of the Year Kathy Cline Canoa Hills GC In 2005 Kathy joined the Canoa Hills WGA, where she met long-time AWGA member and volunteer Pat Trimbell. Pat got Kathy involved with tournaments first, but given Kathy s helpful nature she became the Canoa Hills Vice President, was President for eight years, and served as AWGA Rep, Interclub Chair and now Handicap Chair and Tournament Chair. She is currently the Awards Chair for the Southern District and helps with Girls Golf of. After attending an AWGA Annual Meeting with Pat one year, she was approached to help the AWGA. She joined the Tournament Committee, became an Advocate for the Build-a-TEAM Program, and is also an important part of the AWGA Information and Outreach Committee, helping with the GEM survey and conducting AWGA Rep meetings. Information and Outreach Program Manager Kelly Hollister says of Kathy From the first, she was very prepared to present at the meetings. She took my information about the Reps, and the Rep Manual, and made her own booklet and outline to present. When different questions come up, questions like in handicapping, she is able to answer those as well, because she has done that for her club. Her knowledge is very helpful. Kelly Hollister, Kathy Cline and Presenter Julie Fenn Lifetime Achievement Award Colleen Green Great Eagle GC Lifetime Achievement Awards are given to individuals who have performed exceptional service throughout their careers, who work hard, give of themselves tirelessly, know how to get things done, and can be relied upon under any circumstances, people who truly make a difference. Great Eagle s President took Colleen to a CAGD meeting and introduced her as their Rep, which was news to her. Thus began her illustrious volunteer career. She was later Great Eagle s Treasurer and helped form their Handicap committee, serving as Handicap Chair at one time. She also joined the AWGA Handicap Committee and became an Area Advisor for the Information and Outreach Committee. She was appointed to the AWGA Board in 2010, has volunteered at the Joanne Winter Silver Belle, was an LPGA walking scorer with ESPN, and has been a PGA volunteer. Asked how she became such a long-time volunteer, Colleen replied It just kind of happened!! One thing led to another, led to another Along the way she s picked up a number of accolades, including the 2000 CAGD Nell Ellenberger Award "In appreciation for the time, talent and love you have given Central Arizona Golf District". She was also named the 2005 AWGA Rep of the Year and 2007 AWGA Volunteer of the Year. Colleen Green and Presenter Erin Groeneveld
