Home to Robin Lane is Tennessee Volunteer country a fitting origin for a dedicated and giving person. After graduating from the University of Tennessee, Robin set out on a successful career. Not surprisingly, since she has such an outgoing and gregarious personality, it was in sales. And now her Volunteer roots have taken hold in the AWGA. Robin was elected to the AWGA Board of Directors in 2008, is a member of the Executive Board and is Chair of the Communications Committee. She grew up as a Tennessee Volunteer but has since found happiness as an Arizona volunteer. Robin played golf since she was a teenager, although she rarely had time to enjoy it while in college and after, while she was working full-time. In 1990, she began golfing more frequently and has since made it an integral part of her life. When she and her husband, Tommy, decided to move to Arizona in 2003, Robin asked for a job transfer. Her employer, Sun Microsystems, graciously relocated her to Tucson where she and Tommy bought a house at The Gallery. Robin continued working for an additional two years and played golf with the WGA at The Gallery as often as she could. When she retired in 2005, she golfed and golfed and golfed some more! With more time to play, Robin began to participate in statewide AWGA events. She attributes her higher skill level to spending more time on the course. Practice helps to improve my game, she says. I practice at least once or twice a week and my handicap index has really improved. Robin still takes lessons to sharpen her game. She credits much of her success on the course to her instructor and encourages everyone to find the right match when looking for a golf teaching professional. Sometimes you have to try a couple different instructors before you find the one who teaches in the same way that you learn, she adds. When that fit happens, you ll really see your game improve. In 2006 Robin started playing in competitive events including the Challenge Series, AWGA State Stroke Play Championship and AWGA State Match Play THE SPOTLIGHT S ON... ROBIN LANE By Mary Ann Souter Championship. With a handicap index of 4.6, she has played her way to championship golf. Robin holds the title of 2007 Club Champion at The Gallery. Robin s enthusiasm has already been noticed on the Communications Committee. Her energetic spirit is contagious and her driving force is spurring better communications with AWGA members. She is currently representing the AWGA on Golf AZ Radio bringing animation to our regular spot and looking for new ways to get our message out to women golfers. My goal is to understand the role of the committee, Robin says, and to identify, evaluate and update all forms of AWGA communications. Part of my responsibility is to recruit and support AWGA Reps and Area Advisors and I hope to meet each one of you while I am in this position. I m excited about working with the AWGA, she adds in a bubbly tone. The Board is quite a dynamic group of individuals and I am honored to be part of it. I realize the importance of volunteering and I hope to make a difference. Robin describes herself as a workaholic. When she retired, she had too much spare time. She wanted to get involved in the Arizona women s golf community and inquired through friends and acquaintances about the process to volunteer. She found her niche and now Robin wants to help other women to get involved. There are many ladies just like me out there, she says, and my goal is to share and communicate all that I learn so that they can get involved too. I have the time and the passion, so why not give back? Robin and her husband, Tommy, are seasoned travelers and play golf often when they vacation. They played together in Hawaii in the Executive Cup Tournament and represented The Gallery in Ojai, California at the Albertson s Team Challenge, a Golf Channel Tournament. They golf together every week and since they are both skilled and competitive golfers, their matches are always fun for both of them. With her distinctive southern accent and charm, Robin will capture your attention while she promotes women s golf and the AWGA. If you haven t met her yet, you ll be captivated by her energy and her love of golf. She is friendly, intelligent, open-minded, and eager to enhance your experience with the AWGA. We are pleased to have Robin Lane on the Board of Directors, sharing her passion for golf, and leading her committee to new heights. Welcome aboard, Robin!

2 RULES TIP: Rule 19-2 IMPORTANT RULES CHANGE! Rule 19-2: Ball in motion deflected or stopped by player, partner, caddie or equipment. Penalty for a ball accidentally deflected or stopped by player, partner, caddie or equipment has been amended to ONE stroke. This is especially important in Match Play. Now if your ball in motion hits you or your equipment in match play it is ONE stroke not loss of hole as before. In stroke play it is now ONE stroke instead of two. AWGA APPRECIATION DAY AT GOLFSMITH A BIG SUCCESS! Leslie Beglin, Dobson Ranch, Wins YES! Putter Leslie Beglin, Dobson Ranch WGA, won the YES! Putter at Golfsmith on February 28th If you didn t stop by the Chandler Golfsmith store on Thursday, February 28 th, you missed out on some great gifts and fun contests. AWGA members who attended received a free hat or visor, a pair of socks and other discount coupons. Snacks were set up on a nicely decorated table and a representative from Foot Joy was there to help women with shoes. Golf Tec instructors, both PGA and LPGA, taught a half hour clinic. The most exciting part of the day for some women was the putting contest. If they made it into the finals, they had the opportunity to be in the semi-final round. After two rounds of finals, Leslie Beglin from Dobson Ranch won the putting contest. Her prize was a sharp YES! Putter. Prizes for door prizes were $25 Gift Cards, which were greatly appreciated by the four AWGA winners, Kara Reddell, Barbara Kahler, Susan Woods, and Gail Gilmore. Look for more special events with our newest Partner, Golfsmith, and in the meantime, support their business and use your AWGA discount when you shop. GOLF AND AUTO MECHANICS? Pictured left to right Pam Smith, Gloria Barton, Suzi Hetland, Dolly, Gay Potter, Kara Reddell Members of women s golf leagues get together regularly to hit the links and have a good time socializing. Mixed Stix, AWGA s new Internet Club is no exception. There are two divisions now active, one in the east valley and one in the west valley. They play 9-holes on a weekly basis after work, at various courses in their respective areas, just for fun. These ladies really know how to enjoy a round of golf! Recently, they also demonstrated one of the other benefits of playing with a group, when one of the members discovered after play that she had a dead battery in her car. Did they call a tow truck? NOT ON YOUR LIFE! Her fellow golfers came to her rescue, armed with a set of jumper cables. Sounds simple, but simple memories are the stuff lifelong friendships are made of. Cheers to our Mixed Stix golfers! (For information on joining, visit our website at org/who-we-are/16-join-a-club.asp).

4 AWGA COURSE RATERS GIVE A GREAT SHOWING Each year our AWGA course raters are required to attend a two-day USGA Calibration Seminar where they must perform to a certain skill level to maintain our course rating license. This year our team of four -- Logan Erickson, Melanie Bridges, Paula Page and Mary Jane Perry -- traveled to San Diego for the seminar which included a test of knowledge, a test of skill, and a test of team performance. Since course rating is subjective, each team was scored on their ability to rate specific holes that were previously rated by Master Course Raters. The AWGA team represented us well and did an outstanding job in all aspects of the course rating assessment. Congratulations to our AWGA team, who came in 2nd place. We appreciate your commitment to making our association one of the best in the nation! THINK GOOD THOUGHTS If you want to live a happy life, tie it to a goal, not to people or things. ~ Albert Einstein (How about lowering your Handicap Index as a goal? Mindi Boysen Explains How to Correct these Swing Faults through Exercises Have you ever heard your PGA certified golf instructor tell you that one of your swing faults is a sway (lateral slide of hips away from target during backswing) or a slide (lateral slide of hips toward target on downswing)? Well, according to the Titleist Performance Institute, a little over one third of all amateur golfers possess one or both of those faults. Setting aside your forgetting the correct swing, or not knowing basic fundamentals of the swing, the leading cause for a sway or slide is tight hips. During the backswing and downswing, the hips are supposed to rotate with maybe a hint of a weight shift. This requires adequate internal rotation range of motion which we usually don t practice because it doesn t always feel good. It can be very frustrating when you KNOW what to do, but your BODY won t let you do it! The following Mindi Boysen demonstrates the are three exercises Windshield Wipers exercise I prescribe to my clients which help tremendously and directly lead to better success on the golf course! WINDSHEILD WIPERS: Internal Rotation: Lie on your back with both legs at 90 degree angles in the air. Place both fists between the knees. Squeeze your knees into your fists and, while flexing your feet, push lower legs and feet outward. Repeat in 3 sets of 20 reps. You will feel a deep tingle/muscle burn in your side gluteal and hip area. SEATED KNEE DIPS: Internal Rotation: Sit with feet wide and knees bent and propped up on your hands. Take turns dipping one knee at a time to the middle of the floor. Start by dropping the knee a little, then a little more as you warm up. Eventually the hip of the dropped leg will lift off the floor. Repeat 20x. Mindi Boysen demonstrates the Seated Knee Dips exercise FROGGIES: External Rotation: Kneel on the floor with forearms on floor in front of you. Slowly allow your knees to separate to the fullest width. Then, while keeping the knees in place, move each foot out a little wider than the knee. Try to hold for approximately 1 minute. Mindi Boysen demonstrates the Froggies exercise Mindi Boysen is a TPI Level III certified golf fitness instructor and official fitness partner for the AWGA. 5 SO LONG AND BEST WISHES! Matt Cook, our USGA Boatwright Intern for the past six months is leaving the association to take a full-time job with Vanguard Investments. The AWGA thanks Matt for all his help with special projects as well as course ratings and tournaments and wishes him Good Luck in his new position. Making a difference The AWGA is governed by an elected Executive Board of 9 members who reside in all areas of the state. In order to ensure that those elected to do the important work of directing the Association are very well versed in the purpose and operation of the AWGA, nominating procedures include looking first to the working committees of the Association to select candidates. This process begins in July. Each Committee Chair will submit recommendations to the Nominating Committee who will then select the best qualified candidates for election and present you, the members, with a ballot. So why should YOU care? 1. Because volunteering with the AWGA is fun and rewarding! Just ask those who are already involved. We all play golf because it s fun, and we volunteer for the same reason. Get involved now and see how enriching it is to work with this group of fun and passionate women at this very exciting time in women s golf. 2. Because the long term health of women s golf in Arizona depends on it! The right people doing the right things makes all the difference. Now is the time for you to take action to help us make sure that our Executive Board continues to be made up of the best our membership has to offer. How can YOU take action? Help us staff our Committees with the best. Go to the AWGA website, click on AWGA Needs You/AWGA Committees Print out the list of AWGA Committees and their responsibilities Print out the volunteer interest form Think about the membership at your club. Do you have members who you think would make wonderful additions to the governance of women s golf in Arizona? If so, give them the interest form and suggest that they might consider volunteering. Think about yourself. Are you one of those women? If you know women who have already had successful experience on an AWGA or other State Association Committee, talk with her about stepping forward to be nominated directly to the Board of Directors. Act NOW! OFFICE VOLUNTEERS NEEDED!!! Office Volunteer Days Planned for April 10 th and April 24 th The AWGA is a busy organization and providing services for over 25,000 members can sometimes be a daunting task. We often need volunteer help in our office to get important information out to our members, keep up with filing, and other administrative tasks. If you are interested in assisting the staff and getting to know more about the AWGA, we welcome you to join us for a morning of activity and accomplishment. Your charge will be to assist the staff in time-consuming tasks while enjoying the camaraderie associated with a team effort. No special skills are needed just a willingness to help and a cheerful attitude. Two opportunities are available: Thursdays, April 10 th and April 24 th Time: 9:30 am until 12:30 pm. Lunch will be provided at 12:30. Please call the AWGA office at (602) or Vivian at Vivian@awga. org to participate in one or both of our Office Volunteer days. Bring a friend and lend a hand! Your efforts will truly be appreciated.
