1 Page 1 of 5 President s Message Jeanne Bihm It is hard to believe I am saying this already, but I hope you are all ready for the holidays. We have enjoyed a very successful start to the season and I hope you are enjoying the wonderful weather. Eighty-six ladies attended the Welcome Back Coffee (future name Welcome Back Breakfast and Fashion Show) which was the most in many years. Our first ladies day of the season was a rousing success with nearly 70 players. The Sunrise Ladies Golf Team performed well in their first match, winning the contest for gross points by a large margin over Marrakesh. The team is second overall in the gross category just a few points behind Palm Desert Greens. Keep up the good work! Make sure you get your entry in for the December Member/Guest as it is filling up rapidly. You don't want to miss being Queen of the Greens! The breakfast begins at 8am with golf following at 9am. Susie Lauzier has a fun filled day planned with breakfast, tee prizes, lunch, and awards. This is a very busy time of year but please plan to attend the December General Meeting on Tuesday the 4th following our charity event benefitting The Salvation Army Chico in their efforts to help victims of the Camp Fire in Paradise, CA. Our new guest policy for Tuesday Ladies Day and Saturday Breakfast and Golf is as follows: a guest may participate in the game as long as they have a GHIN handicap. The $3 fee will be charged to the members account and any sweeps will go there as well. The guest will be charged green fees. It is with a heavy heart that I say we will all miss Marsha White, our long term trophy chairperson. Her passing in November will be felt all over the Sunrise Community. I think of her every day on my morning walks and I will miss stopping to chat with her. Happy Holidays to all of you. Enjoy your time spent with family and friends, and be thankful for living in such a warm and caring community. After graduating, she moved to Palo Alto where she taught school. Jan also lived in Woodland Hills and Walnut Creek before moving to the Seattle area in In Seattle she studied Interior Design and, she said, played a lot of tennis. Divorce inspired me to open my own interior design business, said Jan. She ran that business for about 12 years. In 1993, after two bouts with breast cancer, I became the first chair of the Susan G Komen Race for the Cure in Seattle, said Jan. Then I served as their president and stayed on the board for many years. I was chosen to be on the advisory board of the national organization for three years. This was one of the most rewarding experiences of my lifetime! From real estate was my passion, she said. Jan has owned her home at Sunrise since My sister had a home here, and it inspired me to buy a place to vacation as I was working long hours as a real estate broker in Seattle. In 2017 she retired and moved permanently to Sunrise, with the blessings of her two children and three grandchildren in Seattle. They urged me to enjoy life here! she said. While living in Seattle she discovered her love of abstract painting. I take lessons here in the desert and show at a couple of galleries, she said. Jan now has her realtor license here in CA and also fills her time painting and playing golf (back surgeries ended the tennis for her). I have survived cancer three times and am so glad to welcome each day! said Jan. I am so happy to be in the sun, meeting new friends, learning golf. I like to be really good at whatever I do, and work very hard to achieve my goals.

3 Page 3 of 5 NEW GOLF RULES Pat Snyder If you have not already done so, please pick up the sheet of Rules of Golf changes that Mark has prepared. As you know, the new rules are much more liberal. In the past, players needed to be very careful about playing a shot from a bunker. The modern rules allow you to carry clubs into the bunker and remove loose impediments from the bunker. However, the prohibition against testing the surface and touching the sand is still in effect. One may not improve their line of play by touching the sand with their club in the act of making a stroke. Once you have played your shot from the bunker you may rake. Pat Snyder will be giving her Rules Clinic over the next few weeks, so make sure you are on the putting green by no later than 8:20am for these clinics! Tournament Chair s Message, Patty Spady The season has begun and, so far, most events have had higher participation than in years past. That is fantastic and we hope it continues throughout the season! We kick off December by getting everyone into the giving spirit. Our annual holiday season fundraiser event is being held on December 4th. Due to the devastating fires that have recently destroyed areas of California, it was decided to focus our efforts on helping fire victims in the Paradise area this year. The Salvation Army in that area will be the recipient of any funds raised through our event. A donation box has been placed in the Pro Shop for anyone who would like to contribute to this worthy cause. Please make your checks payable to SCCLGA. We also will be collecting $10/person from everyone participating in the Tuesday morning scramble on December 4th. Each player will receive a miracle putt to be used during play that day as a thank you for your support. Depending on the amount of players, this will either be a 3- or 4-person scramble event. So remember to bring your $10 (or more!) cash or check that morning because sharing is caring, and giving is good living! On December 11, Susie Lauzier and her committee are promising lots of fun and prizes for their Queens of the Greens Member/Guest event! Make sure to get your entry in early, as these events tend to fill up quickly. It will be a scramble. A quick reminder that any of the events listed in the ladies book with an asterisk (*) are post-able games and eligible for the ringer book. The December LGA/MGA Breakfast and Scramble will be held on Saturday, December 15. Get your foursome together and get signed up to play! Due to Christmas Day and New Year's Day falling on Tuesday this season, no organized ladies events are scheduled. 4 Page 4 of 5 Mark Girard s GOLF PRO s MESSAGE Golf activity in December will slow down after a busy start in November before picking up again in the New Year. We do still have a couple of events this month. The Holiday Tournament is on Saturday and Sunday the 8th and 9th with a cocktail party on Friday the 7th. There is an LGA breakfast on Saturday the 15th. If you do not have a team for either event or have any questions on these events please ask us in the golf shop. We can usually find a group for you to play in. So far this season participation in all golf events has been up from past years. Our first ladies day had 65 players with many new members. The Welcome Back Coffee was well attended and our trunk show from Antigua Golf did very well. Our overseeding was very successful and Ron Cressy and his crew have the course in great shape. We also have new sand in all our greenside bunkers which is a big improvement. We have implemented the USGA's 2019 rules revisions to start the season, so if you have any questions, we have some of the highlights of the changes on a handout in the golf shop. GOLF TIP: Maximize your Long Fairway Shots When players are a long distance from the green, they often try to do too much by hitting clubs they are not comfortable with or taking too big of a swing. The first thing to do is to accurately assess your lie. If the ball is sitting on bare ground, down in the grass, in the rough or on a slope, you need to take a club with more loft to make sure you can get the club on the ball and get the ball in the air. Hitting a long club without enough loft will usually result in a poor shot and still leave you with a long shot to the green. It is better to hit a good shot with a more lofted club. In general, when faced with a long shot, it is a good strategy to hit a club that you trust and are confident in. This is particularly true when you are playing in a competition where your score may help the team. Trust what you know you do best.
