2 AWGA STAFF, GETTING TO KNOW THEM Executive Director, Mary Long, and the Board of Directors have worked hard over the past several years to help our staff develop into a team of experts who can address any question you may have about your AWGA membership, the Rules of Golf, Course Rating, tournament administration and tournament opportunities, Handicapping, and any other information you may need pertaining to golf. If they don t have a ready answer, they will know where to go to get one for you. They work hand in hand with our Board of Directors, the governing body of the AWGA. Because it helps to put a name with a face, we d like to re-introduce you to our staff. Hopefully, you will all feel very comfortable calling and asking for any assistance you may need. Of course, you always have the option of contacting a Board member directly at the phone numbers provided in the club directory. 4 Four-Ball Stroke Play Championship April 26-27, 2004 Emerald Canyon Golf Course 72 Emerald Canyon Drive Parker, Arizona (928) The site of AWGA s Four Ball Championship in 2004 will be Emerald Canyon Golf Course near Parker. Known as The Jewel of the Desert, this fascinating course has been carved out of mountains and several holes have breathtaking views of the Colorado River. Those who have played the course will tell you that on one hole one must become William Tell to accurately drive the ball between two rock cliffs to a hidden green. Several of the par 3 s have drops of some 100 feet tee to green. Placement and accuracy is a must for partners to score well, and the course should prove to be a challenge to all players. While there, participants may enjoy challenges of a different nature... Blue Water Casino bordering the Colorado River, where even if you don t gamble, you ll enjoy the sheer beauty of the desert meeting water. To go to Parker, take I 10 going west out of Phoenix; at Quartsite go north on AZ 95. It is approximately a 2.5 hour drive from Phoenix. Short Course Tournament March 28, 2004 Palm Valley Golf Club 2211 N. Litchfield Road Goodyear, AZ (623) The Hale Irwin-designed Lakes Course was created to provide players with a high-quality alternative to Palm Valley s championship length Palms Course. With a par of 62 and measuring 4,745 yards from the back tee, the Lakes Course allows players to enjoy a fun and challenging round of golf in considerably less time. After exiting at Litchfield and turning right, you will encounter a golf sanctuary like no other in the state. Palm trees line the street and plush grass starts to twinkle just a few blocks away. Instead of a typical desert course with rough desert terrain surrounding the fairways and greens, golfers find transition areas; large shallow patches of firm sand await you on almost every hole. The Lakes is a perfect spot to hold a tournament that emphasizes the short game. Club selection, pitching, chipping and putting will make the difference. It may not be the longest hitter who wins this tournament.
5 AWGA SPONSORS FUNDRAISER FOR BREAST CANCER PATIENTS As the Arizona Women s Golf Association, our obvious first priority will always be to promote and maintain the best interests and true spirit of the game of golf among women in Arizona. In addition to that we also have a tremendous opportunity to do much good in many other areas that affect the lives of our members. One of those areas is our health. Last spring Mo Cruikshank, a very active, supportive and well known member of the AWGA was diagnosed with breast cancer. During her treatment, Mo became acquainted with an organization called the Arizona Institute for Breast Health (AIBH). She was so impressed with her experience there, that she approached the AWGA about sponsoring a fundraiser for this non-profit organization. Mo was to co-chair the event along with Dr. Jackie Myers, herself a breast cancer survivor, AWGA member through the Rim Golf Club and board member of the AIBH. As many of you know, cancer was not Mo s only health issue and she died unexpectedly last fall of a heart attack. We are continuing with the fundraiser and will present it on October 11, 2004 at the Rim Golf Club, in memory of Mo. Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women in Arizona, with an estimated 3,500 Arizona women diagnosed each year. The Arizona Institute for Breast Health is a charitable organization whose purpose is to give women who have been diagnosed with breast cancer a place to get their questions answered. Their volunteer panel of doctors consists of eight specialists in breast surgery, mammography, medical oncology, radiation oncology, reconstructive surgery, pathology, rehabilitation and the psychological aspects of treatment. They use a multidisciplinary approach to review each case and provide a second opinion, giving women the knowledge they need to make the best choices regarding their treatment options. When a woman with a breast cancer diagnosis calls AIBH for a consultation, a patient advocate interviews her and retrieves her medical records. Every Wednesday, the preceding week s cases are reviewed by the panel. As soon as the review is complete, individual doctor-panelists meet with each woman to fully explain her condition. She knows the status of her cancer, whether she is a candidate for lumpectomy, what her odds are for beating the disease, and has a recommendation for treatment.this consultation is free to all patients. The AIBH wants all women to have the best possible information about their disease, and the best options for treatment. A very worthy goal. Please mark your calendars for October 11, 2004 and plan to join us in support of the Arizona Institute for Breast Health. Look for more details in future newsletters and newsblasts. For more information on the AIBH, visit their web page at or call (480) If you or anyone you know has need of their services, please contact them. They are there to help.
