She s a skilled but friendly competitor and plays several times a week. She finds golf to be one of the most satisfying parts of her life now that she is retired from her law practice. She still maintains her license as an attorney but decided after working many long hours for many years that there was more to life than work. And although she isn t working full-time professionally anymore, her life is completely full with a new kind of work volunteer work coupled with golf work that is personally rewarding and enjoyable too. Mary moved to Arizona in 1982 when her husband who was in the Air Force was transferred here. She started playing golf shortly after and joined the AWGA in the mid 1980s. That was over 20 years ago, and Mary is now a member of not one or two ladies groups, but four. And as the years go by, she becomes even more active in each group not only playing in their tournaments but also holding volunteer leadership positions in them. She served as Tournament Chair for the Randolph North WGA for two years and for the City Women s Golf Association in Tucson for two years. The CWGA holds six tournaments a year plus championship events and its members are from about 15 Tucson clubs. Mary has also served as the Team Coordinator for the CWGA. With a Handicap Index of 10.6, Mary has become a skilled golfer and has held the title of Club Champion at Fred Enke WGA in 2004 and 2005 and Randolph WGA in She was also a member of the Forty Niner County Club WGA team, which won the 2005 CWGA Match Play Championship. And her involvement in tournaments goes beyond playing in AWGA events. As spouse of a military officer Mary plays an active role in unit functions, some of which include golf. Mary and her partner, Elvira Burruel, an F-16 mechanic and also an AWGA member finished second in the1 st Annual Commander s Cup golf tournament held on May 16, With a full field of 128, the two-person scratch scramble competition was fierce. Mary and Elvira finished with a score of 67 but lost a score card playoff. Mary s husband, an F-16 pilot, is now the Commander of the 162 nd Fighter Wing of the Arizona Air National Guard in Tucson. As the Wing Commander s spouse, Mary attends and sometimes THE SPOTLIGHT S ON MARY MOISIO By: Mary Ann Souter hosts many special events. And, as part of a huge extended military family, Mary is a volunteer extraordinaire. She is deeply involved in military charities feeling the needs of the many families who are living with financial difficulties because of wage earners temporarily leaving their civilian jobs and being deployed for significantly longer periods than they have in the past. There is a heavy load placed on the National Guard, says Mary. There s a tremendous need for support both financially and emotionally and I do whatever I can to help. We have bake sales and golf tournaments to raise money and plan youth and wing-wide activities for moral support. This community and its businesses have been so generous in helping our National Guard families. Mary s leadership has provided many families with much needed financial assistance as well as other social activities. And it doesn t stop there. She has also served on the Boards of charities such as the Red Cross and the Arthritis Foundation. Affectionately known as Mrs. Moose by those who would normally call her Mrs. Moisio, it is a name she cherishes as a connection to her husband. His call sign as a pilot is Moose and she prefers the less formal title. The Moisios have been married for 23 years. So what other things does Mrs. Moose enjoy doing in her spare time? She loves to go fishing and spends hours at a time as an amateur gardener. Actually, she has accomplished something most gardeners or golfers would be proud to admit. Mary has designed and built her own personal putting green in her backyard. Now that s being passionate about golf! Doing some initial research on the USGA website under Turf Management, she found instructions to build a putting green according to USGA standards. That was a challenge she couldn t resist. So she put her love of golf together with her love of gardening and created a natural putting green. I have a whole new understanding and respect for the work it takes to maintain a green now, Mary acknowledges. It takes a lot of care to keep it nice, she adds. When asked how much her putting has improved since having her own putting green available day and night, she answered, Not much. I putt just about the same as I always did. But it s fun to be able to go outside and hit a few balls whenever I want. Mary has made some astute observations playing golf with so many women s groups. I golf with women who are in their late 40s to ones in their 80s. The ones who are in their 80s don t move like they re in their 80s. They re physically tougher, healthier and have a continued on page 3

Here s a course that is easily accessible yet secluded in the northwest Phoenix area near Lake Pleasant. Surrounded by federal land with no development, the course offers a feeling of privacy not known to many Arizona courses. With each hole spread in an expansive area, the course takes advantage of major elevation changes and the diverse landscape. From the beautiful lush green fairways to the local desert trees, it feels like the course has been dropped into the natural setting of the area. It s not only in a pristine and beautiful environment but it also offers an enjoyable golf game for players of every skill level. Their first course, the Founders Course, is a Rees Jones design and plays 5,300 yards for women. Chris Nachtweih, Head Golf Professional, boasts of the atypical setting Quintero offers. We re surrounded by mountains and unlike other private clubs, there are no houses on-site. There are actually no structures at all as far as the eye can see. This does make Quintero both unique and appealing to most golfers. Landing areas are generous but since it is a desert course, if you miss your target, the desert will most certainly bring trouble. Quintero s Ladies Day is Wednesday. Although the group is small now only women play they are hoping to add more women to the roster as word spreads about their weekly game. Quintero has won several awards including being named one of America s Top 100 modern golf courses by Golfweek Magazine for four years in a row. It was also ranked #3 among private courses in Desert Golf Magazine s 2004 Top Ten. But in Quintero s case, private does not exclude all but homeowners on the property to join. Unlike other private clubs, there is no real estate requirement to join. So find an AWGA Quintero member and find out if you can play as a guest. This may be just the introduction you need to play one of the most challenging and impressive courses in the Valley. Golf Memberships are still available, Chris adds, and golfers must be members to play our course. Membership entitles players access to both the Founders Course and the upcoming Greg Norman Course. The new course is slated to begin construction in 2007 and promises to offer the same spectacular surroundings and golf as the Founders Course. The property will include a fitness and vitality center, putting area, tennis courts, swimming pool, and hiking trails. This is one place where members can truly have it all. So check out their website at or call their Pro Shop at for more information.

3 NEW BOOK SYNERGISTIC GOLF - ONE DAY AT A TIME AWGA staff member, Mary Ann Souter and AWGA partner and golf fitness specialist, Mindi Boysen have teamed up to write a book which combines the various elements influencing the golf game into a daily, easy-to-use format. Synergistic Golf One Day at a Time; Get Your Body, Mind and Spirit Working Together for a Better Game is a complete approach to improving your golf game. It s reader-friendly, entertaining and educational. Each page offers an array of new information to help golfers recognize the importance of all components of the game seamlessly integrating the physical, mental, emotional and spiritual elements. The various elements in this book are not new, but the initiative to combine them is a fresh idea. Synergistic Golf One Day at a Time is written in a daily guide format. It is not dated so you can start any day, week or month and it can be used year after year. Turn one page a day. Each day presents an exercise with photo demonstration and explanation along with a nutrition tip, a motivational or inspirational quote, a golf tip or fact, and a snippet of golf humor. The philosophy that a fit body, healthy attitude, knowledge of the game, and a good sense of humor working together produces better results than developing each aspect individually is the premise of this fun-to-use, results-oriented guide. Best of all, it takes just about 10 minutes a day to get your body and mind going in the right direction. This book is endorsed by several golf professionals including Mary Long, AWGA Executive Director; Kim Haddow, LPGA Class A Instructor and College Coach of Annika Sorenstam; Christopher Dorris, Performance Psychologist; and Lynn Zmistowski, USGA Handicap Procedures Committee. Mindi and Mary Ann are giving all AWGA members an exceptional Introductory Offer. When you buy the book, you will get Mindi s fitness DVD (a $29.95 value) as a bonus. That s the book and the DVD for only $ The DVD shows live demonstrations of the exercises in the book. And as an extra bonus for each book sold, the AWGA will receive $5.00 to be used toward Junior Girls Golf. Go to and click on Buy The Book. When you come to Referral Source, choose AWGA member. That s all there is to it. You will be charged only for the book. The DVD will automatically be sent with it, and the AWGA will receive $5.00 for Junior Girls Golf. That s a win-win for everyone. So take advantage of this great offer now! Spotlight continued... better attitude than other women their age. She continues, Golf is really good for us and is one way to stay healthy and active. And I learn so much from these women. We share tidbits of health information, home remedies, and talk about a variety of subjects. I have met women from diverse backgrounds, different countries and the whole spectrum of political views on the course. The one thing we all have in common though, is that we are all crazy about golf! Golf truly is a great way to make friends. Mary enjoys playing golf with her husband and confesses that he is also her favorite golf partner. I m really looking forward to playing in the Mixed Stix, she says, and I am keeping my fingers crossed that my husband will be in town on July 23 rd and 24 th. I m so glad the AWGA started this new tournament for couples. Mary s contributions to the AWGA, her local women s golf groups, her military family, and her community are significant. She is a woman of remarkable character; one who is a selfless supporter, an enthusiastic worker, a dedicated leader, and a tireless organizer. The lives she touches are numerous. Her positive attitude and warm demeanor are qualities that make her stand out among women. The AWGA is pleased to honor Mary Moisio in this small way for her continuous contribution to golf and her community. RULES TIP: STAKED TREES The stakes and wires supporting newly planted trees are immovable obstructions. Under Rule 24-2, interference occurs when your ball lies so close to the stakes or wires that they interfere with your stance or your intended area of swing. To take relief, you must lift your ball and drop it without penalty within one club-length of and not nearer the hole than the nearest point of relief (i.e., the point on the course nearest to where the ball lies that is not nearer the hole, and where, if the ball were so positioned, no interference by the stakes or wires would exist). The nearest point of relief must not be in a hazard or on a putting green if the ball originally lay through the green; if the ball was originally in a bunker, the drop must be in the bunker; if the ball was originally in a water hazard, there is no relief from an immovable obstruction. Note that there is no relief if the tree, stakes and wires merely intervene on your intended line of play. You will have to hit around, over or through the tree. Note also that you get no relief if it is clearly unreasonable for you to play a stroke because of interference by anything other than the stakes and wires. For instance, if you couldn t play the shot because of thick, low branches, regardless of whether there are stakes and wires present, you get no relief if the stakes and wires are there. Furthermore, you get no relief if interference occurs only through use of an unnecessarily abnormal stance, swing or direction of play. And finally, note that if only the tree itself (not the stakes or wires) interferes with your stance, lie or intended area of swing, there is no relief... unless the club has published a Local Rule to protect young trees. In this case, you must drop away from a tree the club does not want damaged, usually identified by a brightly colored ribbon. Warren Simmons warnsimnn@aol.com AWGA State Rules Committee THINK GOOD THOUGHTS I have long since come to believe that people never mean half of what they say, and that it is best to disregard their talk and judge only their actions. Dorothy Day, American Editor and Reformer (Do your actions represent the real you?) Q: How can I hit better out of heavy rough? A: When rough is very heavy, the grass has a tendency to grab the hosel first and flip the clubhead over closing the clubface at impact. This de-lofts the club and makes the shot go low and left (right for lefties) with very little distance. Next time try the following: 1. Select a club with more loft. 2. Pre-set the clubface slightly open. 3. Increase grip pressure in the last three fingers of the left hand (right for lefties) to resist the flipping action of the clubhead. 4. Play the ball in the middle of your stance. 5. Put more weight on your forward side. 6. Make sure to turn the body through to the target and finish the swing.

Did you know that if it is 18.4 or less, you are in the top 20 percentile of women golfers in Arizona? Did you also know that if you have an 18.4 or lower Index, and happen to have been born before September 17, 1955, this makes you eligible to compete in the US Senior Women s Amateur Championship? Most of us probably think that we are out of the running when it comes to competing in a national championship, and we probably are if we are talking about having a chance to win at that level. But, as amateur golfers, we can still experience the fun and excitement of competing at this highest level, and take advantage of the opportunity to play golf at some of Arizona s most prestigious golf courses along the way. Each year, USGA Committee members conduct local qualifiers in locations around the nation for all 7 of the USGA women s national championships. The qualifying locations are selected, in part based on previous year s participation levels. In years past, Arizona had a very low participation rate for the Senior Women s Amateur Qualifier. As a result, we were eliminated as a qualifying site and Arizona women were forced to travel out of state to try to qualify for the national Championship. (In 2004, three of the women who qualified for the championship in Southern California were from Arizona.) Enter the AWGA. Last year, our members successfully petitioned the USGA to re-institute the Arizona qualifier for This qualifier will be at Estancia Golf Club in Scottsdale, August 29, The number of qualifying spots will be based on the number of entries received. Qualifying individuals from this local qualifier will be entered in the US Senior Women s Amateur Championship, scheduled for September 17-22, 2005 at The Apawamis Club in Rye, New York. Don t miss this opportunity to support this qualifier in Arizona, play one of Arizona s best and most exclusive golf courses, and experience one of the perks of having earned your 18.4 or better USGA Handicap Index, qualifying to play in a National Championship. Entries are available online at apply_to_play.html. Entries are now open and will be accepted until August 3 rd.
