By Mary Ann Souter It s hard to believe the AWGA has been a thriving women s golf association longer than most of us have been alive! Take a look at the members of your club and it s easy to see that the Jack Bartko and Kathy Ehrlich women who make up the AWGA are strong leaders, dedicated volunteers and forward-thinking women with an evolving vision for tomorrow s golf. That s just the way it started back in 1924 when prominent women such as Jo Goldwater, mother of Barry and Bob, were not only skilled players but also active in developing the AWGA. Jo came in second in the first State Match Play Championship. Since that time, over 50 women have served as President of our Board of Directors and on January 28th the baton was passed once again from Barbara Byrnes Dottie Sparks and Logan Erickson to Kathy Ehrlich. The Arizona Country Club hosted our Annual Meeting and Awards Dinner with a delicious dinner and lovely surroundings. AWGA members from all over the state joined in the events of the day from the business meeting to meandering around the patio visiting old friends to the highly anticipated awards dinner. Each year the specially chosen speakers entertain us with humorous remarks and tales about the women receiving awards. This year was no exception. From learning about the origination of our Player of the Year s nickname, Tui, to the witty roasting of our Senior Player of the Year, Barb Byrnes, attendees were kept smiling from beginning to end. Responses went from admiration Channing Funk and Robin Lane to appreciation to applause to laughter. Jaelyn, daughter of Jody Chandonnet AWGA Communications Manager, celebrated her first birthday at the event. Her small but sweet voice and her own tiny hands clapping added a delightful tone to the evening. Thanks to all of our allied golf associations, partners and guests for sharing in this special event with us. Barbara Byrnes and Mary Fink Tui Selvaratnam and Linda Vollstedt Congratulations to all of our 2008 Award Recipients! Player of the Year: Thuhashini Selvaratnam has won this prestigious award for eight straight years a legend in the Arizona women s amateur golf community. Senior Player of the Year: Barbara Byrnes recaptured the title while acting as President of the AWGA Board. You other seniors look out in 2009! Volunteer of the Year: Dottie Sparks is a Course Rating Captain responsible for 40 golf courses around the Valley and is our own AWGA energizer bunny! AWGA Representative of the Year: Linda Funk, Westbrook Village WGA, is a strong supporter of the AWGA, keeping her group informed and creatively promoting the State Medallion qualifying rounds. Host Club of the Year: White Mountain Country Club Head Pro, Jack Bartko and AWGA Rep, Carolyn Jarvis, made the AWGA Partner s Tournament a great experience for all our players. They really know how to roll out the red carpet!

Grainger, a long time volunteer and past President of the USGA. The award was presented to Lynn Zmistowski at the AWGA Annual Recognition Dinner for her service on the Lynn Zmistowski USGA Handicap Procedures Committee since 1984! Barbara Douglas, Chair of the USGA Women s Committee, began the presentation by describing Lynn s service. Lynn has always been a strong voice and advocate for the club handicap committee, she began. She was a supporter of online score posting and stood her ground when others thought that online posting would be the end of handicapping. Her persistence has paid off with this now being a standard practice. She s been a proponent of inactive season posting, which is now being studied by the USGA. Lynn s family and friends were there to be part of the celebration with her. Thank you, Lynn, for being an active contributor to the USGA Handicap Procedures Committee, for participating with the AWGA on our own Handicap Committee, and in our tournaments. And for sharing your knowledge and enthusiasm with all of us! Congratulations on receiving this great honor! WHAT S GOING ON IN YOUR CLUB? We are always looking for news from around the state. If there are events, personal stories, golf achievements from your club, please send them to maryann@awga.org. If it s interesting to you, it will most likely be interesting to other AWGA members. Thanks for helping us to make our newsletter an even better publication!

3 RULES TIP: Rule 13-4 Rule 13-4 Exception #1b It seems some people are mixed up about being able to take clubs and your whole bag into a hazard. It is permissible providing nothing is done to test the condition of the hazard or improve the lie of the ball. You may also drive your cart into a dry water hazard since your cart is also considered equipment just as your clubs and bag are considered equipment. Please do not try to drive a cart into a bunker or other areas prohibited by the golf course. Submitted by: Jan Wobken, Rules Chair rwobken@cox.net How did they get THAT rating! And THAT slope! Curious?!?!?! The course rating captains can give you answers in about thirty minutes! They have a presentation, which helps you understand everything that goes into rating and slope. The captains are eager to be invited to your women s golf association to explain all the ins and outs Just call the AWGA office and request a captain to visit your association. We will do the rest! As the new President of the Board I am delighted to be in this position as we celebrate 85 wonderful years as a leader in the Arizona golf community. With your help we are fulfilling our mission to promote and maintain the best interests and true spirit of the game of golf for women in Arizona. A special welcome to our new members. Whether you moved here with your golf clubs or are just beginning to play the game, please explore our website, talk with fellow members and enjoy the benefits of the AWGA. I hope all members will take advantage of the many opportunities we provide to learn, volunteer and play golf! (Did I mention volunteer? We have the most amazing volunteers!) Each year we add to and improve our programs to make your membership in the AWGA a valuable one. Please review the information in this newsletter detailing the benefits of belonging to the AWGA. We enjoyed a very successful 2008! Here are just a few of the highlights. For the first time ever we have over 300 member clubs. We introduced 290 new golfers to the game through our Ambassador Program. The success of the program is possible only because of the 100 AWGA members who volunteer to assist the local LPGA and PGA teaching professionals. We held rules and handicap seminars attended by over 200 members. And, we held 11 tournaments with 1326 players and over 100 volunteers at outstanding venues around the state. There s more but my editor says I am out of space! I am looking forward to We will face some challenges as we expect membership to decline in light of current economic conditions. Thanks to our new tax status as a public charity we will begin fundraising efforts to expand programs to benefit our members. And, we have started our commitment to go green including moving two of our eight newsletters to an on-line format. Please do not hesitate to call or stop me when you see me at one of our seminars or tournaments. I value your input and look forward to seeing you soon. Thank you for your support. Together we can and will make a difference in promoting the game of golf to women in Arizona. What better place could there be to enjoy a sport that encourages such a fun, active and healthy lifestyle! Speaking of fun, be sure to listen to our weekly updates on Golf AZ Radio, 1100 KFNX, Thursdays from 3:00-5:00pm. Uncle Buck is the host and AWGA members are guests on every program. The AWGA is Arizona s Leader in Women s Golf! I ll see you on the fairway, Kathy Ehrlich AWGA President of the Board

ANNE PITTMAN LEAVES A BRILLIANT LEGACY On the evening of January 23rd, friends and family gathered at ASU to celebrate the extraordinary life of Dr. Anne Pittman, who died from a massive stroke on November 25, She was an active member of the AWGA for over 25 years and at 90 years old, still held a handicap in the mid twenties. Dr. Pittman developed a passion for golf after she retired and was a constant presence in the Arizona golf community as a player and a volunteer. She played in the Senior Olympics representing Arizona and was the oldest in her age group to win the Gold Medal in Until her last days, her heart was in the game. She played 54 holes of competitive golf in the State Seniors Championship just a few weeks earlier and had recently returned from 10 days of playing golf in Hilton Head with friends. In 2004, she was presented with the AWGA Lifetime Achievement Award for decades of achieving, supporting, leading and volunteering. She was involved in the Joanne Winter Silver Belle Tournament recruiting volunteers to manage the 3-day event. Volunteers were plentiful since it was difficult to say No to Dr. Pittman! She served on the AWGA Board of Directors from 1998 through 2000 and as a Director of the Central Arizona Women s Golf District. She was an active member of the Ken McDonald WGA and played regularly with their group. Dr. Anne Pittman was an enthusiastic advocate for golf. She inspired young people to become their very best and continued as a mentor and coach through her last days. She touched the lives of many women golfers. Dr. Anne Pittman - renowned teacher, zealous mentor, gifted coach, enthusiastic player and dedicated volunteer - leaves a distinguished legacy which will be fittingly noted in the annals of Arizona history. GOLF FORE AFRICA GOLF CLINIC Save your place now for this exciting event to benefit Golf Fore Africa, a charity that has become a passion for LPGA Hall of Famer, Betsy King. They are over half way to achieving their goal of $100,000. They have two projects being built, a medical clinic in Rwanda and housing for AIDS orphans in Lesotho. For more information, call or Debbie@golfforeafrica.org. Visit the website at GOLF IS WHERE THE HEART IS TOURNAMENT RAISES OVER $14,000 TO FIGHT HEART DISEASE Carol Peterson - survivor, advocate of heart health and tournament organizer was a busy lady on Saturday, January 17th, a beautiful day at Gold Canyon s Sidewinder course where this year s charity golf tournament was held. She spent months in preparation for this day solely handling all the details associated with hosting a golf tournament. Carol is a tireless supporter of women s heart health. After her own quadruple bypass surgery in 2004, she seemed to get back to a normal life again enjoying outdoor activities especially golf. But at the end of 2006, the pains in her chest Carol Peterson returned when two of her bypasses closed. She then had a stent and another heart procedure and shortly after that went into sudden cardiac arrest in her hospital room and actually died. I feel so lucky to have a second chance at life, she says. According to my surgeon, I was given a 20 year extended warranty. Maybe the good Lord put me here for a purpose, which I think is to promote awareness, education and prevention of heart disease, which is often acknowledged as a silent killer of women. Carol s passion in fighting the war against women s heart disease is impressive. Banner Heart Hospital refers to her as their Heart Hero and places billboards, massive media ads and featured her on channel 3 as a Heart Hero for Heart Month in February. Carol is using her passion for golf to be a warrior for improving heart health for others. Thank you, Carol, for your commitment to this tournament and to all the AWGA members who participated in this most worthy golf event.
