Everyone is invited to the Ladies Christmas Coffee Morning which is advertised inside. Hopefully I will see many of you at the Club AGM. Rules Changes January 1st 2019 NEW TERMINOLOGY Old Through the Green Teeing Ground Water/Lateral Hazard Wrong Putting Green Outside Agency Abnormal Ground Condition Casual Water New General Area Teeing Area Yellow/Red Penalty Area Wrong Green Outside Influence Abnormal Course Condition Temporary January sees quite a major change in the R & A Rules. You are responsible for knowing and implementing these rules so to help there will be a new page explaining these for the next few months. This will be continued into the future with a General Rules Page. The new terminology is explained on this page in the left hand column. Hoping that the weather is kind and we can continue to enjoy our golf! 2 R & A RULES UPDATE If a player accidently moves their ball while searching for it there is no longer a penalty. The ball will always be replaced, even if the exact spot is not known. The original spot will simply need to be estimated. One reason for this change is the belief that the Rules should help the player find his or her ball (within a reasonable length of time) and not penalise them when they do. As searches often take place in long grass, bushes and leaves there is an inherent risk of the ball moving. And yet, both in match or stroke play, opponents or other players do not have the risk of penalty if the ball accidentally moves - now it is fairer and more consistent. This new principle under Rule 14.2 of always replacing a ball whenever it has been lifted or moved under a Rule that requires it to be replaced will eliminate any confusion around whether the original spot was known or not. When estimating the spot, the player needs to include any imperfections, such as replacing the ball under thick grass/ against other growing or fixed things. Under the new Rules, a player may mark and lift a ball to identify it, to see if it is unfit for play, or to check whether they are entitled to relief, without first needing to announce this intention to another person or give that person a chance to observe the process. If however this was done for no good reason, the player would incur a penalty of one stroke. The ball must be dropped within and come to rest within the specific relief area set by the Rule under which you are taking relief and will be within 1 or 2 club lengths of the reference point. No re-drop if it accidentally hits a person or object after hitting the ground but before coming to rest in the relief area. Dropped a second time if it comes to rest outside the relief area. If this happens again it is placed where it first touched the ground on the second. It is good practice to mark the reference point but it is not a penalty if you fail to do so. Also worth noting that under the new Rules, a ball that is simply out of shape (not cut or cracked) is not a reason on its own to substitute a ball.

4 News from The Seniors I start with some good news, well done to Vice Captain Les and his team for their great win in the Hodds Trophy away at Caldecott Hall by the narrowest of margins, on the first extra hole. Well done to all the team. Next is a home tie against Sheringham on November 15th, 10am start. I am sure the team would like some support on the day. News From the Men Message from Club/Men s Captain For those competitions I can remember off-hand, it s well done to Steve Large, & Mark & Harry Bradfield (Winners of the Summer Singles & Pairs respectively), Adam Sims for both Eclectics, Andrew Fish & Mark Leeds (Neil Ferguson), Jamie Cooper (Autumn KO), & of course Dex Cooper (RTB). I apologise to all those I missed mentioning throughout the year (only just getting the hang of it) but your moment will come at the award ceremony on AGM night. I must also congratulate a strong Juniors Section who beat a Men s team 13 up in October. On the 1st October we had our first monthly medal on the Hill course. The winners were: 1st - John Heard, nett 65 2nd - John Knight, nett 68 3rd - Eugene Charlier, nett 69 4th - Spencer Finn, nett 70 October stableford, the winners were: 1st - Derek Johnson, 46 pts 2nd - Richard Phillips, 42 pts 3rd - Barry Edwards, 40 pts 4th - Bob Nooney, 38 pts Well done to Derek who, with 46 points, had a gross score of 85 and beat his age! The ladies/seniors mixed greensomes was won by Steve Dennett and June Meadows. The charity foursomes stableford, run by Barrie Rivers, for arthritis research was won by Peter Scott and Barrie Rivers with David Larkin and Dennis Walsh runners up. The club matches have now been completed with a defeat of 4-2 to Wensum Valley but we finished on a high note beating Caldecott Hall at home 5 1/2 to 1/2. I would like to thank all the senior members for their support in all the 22 club matches. We have a stableford on November 14th and a medal on the 21st. Preparations are now well under way for our seniors Christmas lunch on the 9th December. The list is in the changing rooms. Seniors AGM is on the 5th December after the December medal. Happy golfing. Barry Ireland Seniors Captain My main objective within this, my final entry is to encourage all members to attend the AGM on 22 nd November. Your interest in, and support for your club, would be appreciated by those who represent you throughout the year. Of course, many of you will be attending at least to receive trophies won throughout the year. Please also just take a minute to consider joining the committee so some fresh ideas are brought to the table on how we can improve things in the future don t be one of those who complains without being prepared to help do something about it! Please check out the notices about the AGM on the locker room notice boards & on the website. Be sure to notify Alan Hemsley of anything you wish to bring up in Any Other Business. This year has seen a lot of industry from the committee, some for the good and perhaps some failings but, importantly, change & improvement over a broad spectrum of matters. The committee have worked hard to produce a continued programme of competition & events too many to mention here, plus an attempt to improve liaison & coordination with the hotel management. There are changes in structure & constitution taking place, amendments and additions to rules & handicaps rearing over the next 18 months. There are also developments with greens matters and potential course changes looming that we need to stay abreast of. Your help would be appreciated so join the committee! With the committee in mind, I would like to express my thanks to them for supporting me with my efforts to keep the wheels turning, and occasionally make a difference. I would also take the opportunity of wishing our new Captain, Graham Knights, every success with his endeavours for Please give him your best support.
