5 Production The quality of the seed that you use depends on the quality of the production. Johnsons choose their production areas depending on the climate and the expertise of the producers. These producers receive constant technical support and the production fields are regularly inspected. Seed Lot Preparation Our seed is cleaned and processed in our own factories. Using our own laboratories we pay particular attention to the following operations: DRYING - to ensure that seed stays viable for the longest possible time. PURITY - selection quality in excess of HVS standard, ensuring seed does not contain anything other than the cultivar that was produced. GERMINATION - ensures the fastest possible establishment. P & G CERTIFICATES - available upon request. Mixing Our seed mixtures are produced in our purpose built storage and processing facilities which are staffed by our fully trained personnel. We have the largest dedicated amenity only mixing plant in the UK with separate rye and non ryegrass mixers. This ensures the efficient production and dispatch of all products & guarantees results. 0 Selection, Production, Quality Seed

6 05 FEEDS THE SEEDS! NOT THE WEEDS! Nutrient Coating for Turf Grasses New improved smooth flow coating Improved seeding results, guaranteed! Faster and more uniform emergence Up to % more plants, up to 85% longer roots Reduced Poa annua and weed levels Increased wear tolerance Targeted nutrient application (Feeding the seed, not the weeds) Quick release phosphorus, enhancing root growth Quick release nitrogen, enhancing leaf growth Slow release nitrogen, prolonging these effects Environmentally friendly (reduced losses of fertiliser to the environment) Labour saving and cost effective iseed : Years of research and development Our world is changing quickly, customers are always looking for the best solutions and high quality grass seed products. However they are also looking to reduce inputs of herbicides, fertilisers and water to preserve our environment. The R&D department of DLF TRIFOLIUM has been working on products that need lower inputs for a long time and several years ago began collaboration with the Yara fertiliser company. The aim of which was to combine the best grass seed genetics with all the nutrients needed by a seedling in a single coating, so as to improve the establishment of the plant but also reduce inputs. After substantial laboratory, greenhouse and user trials, iseed was developed and has subsequently been successfully tested in user trials in many European countries. The iseed treatment significantly affected establishment and growth, improving the rate of both! 7 iseed Feeds the Seeds! Not the Weeds! EARLY ESTABLISHMENT (1= no shoots visible, 10 = plant at first cut stage) SWARD HEIGHT (MM) A UNIQUE SOLUTION Traditionally fertilisers can be applied in several ways, either broadcast, in bands, mixed with seed, or as a seed coating. Phosphorus is especially important as a pre seeding application for early establishment as P is easily fixed in the soil into forms that are unavailable for plant uptake. When broadcasting fertiliser, the utilization rate of phosphorus is generally between 5 and 10%. Nutrient uptake is faster (0%) when the nutrients are available in the soil and not broadcast. This is a marked advantage when overseeding. The risk of applying fertilisers as a seed coating is that they are likely to cause phytotoxicity, as some soluble fertilisers can increase salinity. iseed has changed this rule! Score MANOR Treatment: CEZANNE Control iseed Field sown on September 1, 006. Assessment on October 1, 006. (Source: STRI - Bingley) mm MANOR Treatment: CEZANNE Control iseed Field sown on September 1, 006. Assessment on October, 006. (Source: STRI - Bingley) iseed is a patented seed coating that focuses on improving nutrient utilization during the early stages of plant growth. Typical nitrogen content found in other commercial products is 1-%, with the effects often being negligible. The iseed coating contains 0% nitrogen and % phosphate, the N being a combination of fast acting and slow release. As the fertiliser is coated onto the seeds, the germinating and developing seedling receives the benefit, not the surrounding plants. This is particularly important when overseeding into a competitive sward. 06

8 Visibly improved sward quality Field experiments carried out by the STRI, Bingley (UK) showed the excellent effects of iseed. Early establishment was considerably improved (see figures). The report indicates that iseed had a long lasting positive effect on turf quality and the effect of iseed was an increase in growth, as reflected by the height measurements. Increased wear tolerance and less weeds Improved wear tolerance was observed in trials at the breeding station, and on real sports pitches in Hierden (NL). The results from the breeding station at Moerstraten (NL) demonstrate an increase in wear tolerance by 9% (see graph below). Interestingly, the effects of higher sowing rates and iseed are cumulative! The improved establishment at the start, meant that the iseed pitches started with higher, stronger plant levels, and lower Poa annua levels. CONTINUING HIGHER PLANT NUMBERS FOR iseed DURING THE FOOTBALL SEASON iseed Control Trials show an average increase of % in established plant numbers Ground cover (%) GROUND COVER AFTER WEAR kg seeds/ha 50 kg seeds/ha Treatment: Control iseed Percent of control Autumn (start of season) Treatment: Winter (end of winter) Spring (end of football season) Control iseed (Source: Gibcus G, Fieldmanager , p ) iseed : longer primary and lateral roots Control: primary roots Trials showed an increase in root growth of up to 0% As the season progressed this improved start could be clearly seen as the number of plants in the iseed pitch remained at a higher level. The higher density and stronger plants improved the wear tolerance during the whole of the season. With the sward being denser and suffering less damage, the Poa annua level in the iseed pitch was still considerably lower at the end of the soccer season. In turf grower trials iseed was completely free of Poa annua, whereas the control fields contained.5 5.0% of Poa annua plants. CONSIDERABLY LESS POA ANNUA Season Control iseed Autumn Winter 1.5. 9 Environmentally friendly, labour saving and cost effective The nitrogen and phosphate in iseed are up to four times more efficient compared to broadcast applied ordinary fertilisers. With iseed, the key nutrients are attached to the germinating seed and developing roots, The roots and shoots grow rapidly and the seedlings become strong and vigorous. This improves the use of all the available soil nutrients and decreases nutrient losses into the environment by fixation or leaching. C VERING THE WORLDS GREATEST STAGES In 5 years of turfgrass management I have never seen seed germinate as quickly or establish as comprehensively as Johnsons iseed! C VERING THE WORLDS GREATEST STAGES After two weeks of growth, we d never usually expect coverage as good as this, he added. The results we found with the iseed would be comparable to another full overseeding with a non-coated seed, and even then the colour would not be as brilliant as this we re extremely pleased with the results. 08 Paul Worster BIGGA Chairman 010 Courses Manager Minchinhampton Golf Club Matthew Merchant Head Groundsman Old Trafford Home of Lancashire County Cricket Club

10 09 MAXIMISE ROOT DEVELOPMENT The Benefits of TurfGuard Increases seed establishment Increases root mass up to 80% Increases ground cover up to 50% Improves resistance to disease Shorter lead times from sowing to play Why use TurfGuard Creating an amenity sward can be time consuming and expensive. Consequently, turf professionals seek to ensure the maximum chance of success by preparation and seed selection. TurfGuard creates a third line of defence from the moment the seed is sown by protecting and nourishing the seedlings. In field trials, using TurfGuard substantially increases root mass and shoot density while improving disease resistance, leading to a greatly enhanced sward. This improved establishment leads to reduced invasion of Poa annua and weeds and a shorter time from sowing to play. What is TurfGuard? TurfGuard is a specific strain of beneficial soil bacteria, which is commonly found in the soil, on roots and on leaves. Applied to grass seed its spores germinate and rapidly colonise the root system of the new plant. This provides a barrier to soil pathogens while producing beneficial growth hormones that assist the grass plant in numerous ways. All Johnsons seed mixtures are TurfGuard coated as standard Shoot density Root mass Source: National trials

14 GOLF MIXTURES Johnsons Sports Seed is made up of a range of mixtures for greens, tees, fairways and roughs. Within each mixture the varieties have been carefully selected for top performance. Fast, True greens Johnsons Sports Seed is selected for year round homogeneous surfaces with a lack of disease. Choices of mix can be made from traditional high input mixtures to sustainable solutions based on the most recent research developments. Low growing fairways The fairway surface is always under pressure as it performs such an important task. The annual growth of mixtures containing modern cultivars from the Johnsons Sports Seed range such as Quatro & Manetto fine fescue is less than many standard mixtures and consequently a more satisfactory quality turf, along with reduced costs and carbon outputs can be achieved. Improved wear tolerance Increased wear tolerance eases maintenance and ensures that the grass, even in the most exposed areas, meets the needs of the most demanding players. Hardwearing tees Johnsons Sports Seed tee mixtures allow frequent play even on relatively small tee areas. High density and wear tolerance give a perfect turf for ideal teeing off. Overseeding with carefully selected mixtures provides a quick recovery. Long lasting low input rough The Johnsons Sports Seed range for golf roughs is designed to reduce input requirements and improve visual quality without slowing play. 1 Excellence is par for the course!

23 OVERSEEDING Increasing overseeding rates during the renovation of worn perennial ryegrass turf dramatically increases the speed of establishment and turf quality of the sward. STRI trial on the effects of different seeding rates WEEK ABOVE STANDARD CONTROL 75g/m 5g/m Control Are you applying sufficient seed to create the desired result? DLF recently commissioned the STRI to carry out an independent trial studying the effects of different seeding rates. The trial was set up to examine the speed of recovery, over an 8 week period, of a heavily worn perennial ryegrass sward overseeded with a perennial ryegrass mixture sown at different seed rates. An area of perennial ryegrass turf was intensively worn using a differential slip wear machine fitted with football stud rotors. The trial area was prepared using an Auto Seeder. Four passes were made over the area in four different directions to produce a fine tilth. Conclusion During the establishment phase there was a direct relationship between seed rate and turf quality. The higher seed rates markedly reduced the time required to achieve a surface that would be deemed fit for use. The density and uniformity of sward produced at the end of the establishment phase was also improved by increasing the normal seed rates. Very marked difference between seeding rates Greater grass cover and increased turf quality for highest seed rate All significantly better than standard (5g/m ) and half standard (1.5g/m ) WEEK 5 ABOVE STANDARD CONTROL 75g/m 5g/m Control Grass cover and visual turf quality very similar for highest seeding rates Higher seed rates significantly more grass cover and better visual turf quality than standard and half standard Significant benefit of overseeding on grass cover and visual turf quality WEEK 8 ABOVE STANDARD CONTROL 75g/m 5g/m Control Differences between the extremes of seeding rate still apparent

30 WILD FLORA 9 In order to meet with the increasing demand for conservation mixtures we have formulated twelve seed mixtures, each designed to recreate a particular habitat. Origin The wild flowers used in the Wild Flora range (with the exception of Wild Flora 9) are guaranteed to be of native UK origin. Quality Johnsons Seeds, has in-house production facilities allowing us to further improve seed quality. All production is guaranteed to be never more than generations from the wild stock plant. Technical support Our experienced team is available to provide advice on mixture selection and site management. For larger projects site visits followed by a written report are available. Contract growing service Johnsons has many years experience in the contract production of wild flower seed and plants. This is particularly suitable where extremely large quantities or unusual/rare species are required. Special mixture service Whilst our standard mixtures will cater for most situations we are always pleased to advise upon and produce mixtures to your own specification.

32 MIXTURE SELECTION It is important that the correct mixture is selected to coincide with the soil type and drainage characteristics of each site. Site preparation The aim is to produce a firm weed-free tilth to promote healthy germination. Subsoils often provide weed-free areas with a low nutrient status and are therefore suitable for wild flora planting. It is occasionally necessary to remove the topsoil in areas of high fertility (this can be sold to raise revenue) as these soils tend to promote the growth of more vigorous grasses and pernicious weeds. To remove docks and thistles, nettles and weed grasses, the site should be treated with Glyphosate (following the manufacturers instructions) prior to seed bed cultivation. Summary a. Cultivate site and allow to remain fallow if practical b. Treat with Glyphosate or Remove topsoil c. Cultivate to 10cm d. Create a surface tilth Sowing Sowing can take place throughout most of the year, providing a good tilth can be prepared, however the months of March/April and August/ September are generally the most suitable. a. Mix seed regularly mix to ensure even species distribution b. Drill/broadcast calibrate sowing device c. Rate 5g/m mixtures with grass g/m pure wild flower mixtures d. Sand bulk up small seeding rates with parts silica sand to one part seed by weight e. Raking/harrowing mix seed into soil (depth approx 0.5cm) f. Ring Roller use Cambridge Roller to firm seed bed 1 WILD FLOWER MAINTENANCE First year The requirements in the first year are to control weeds and reduce competition from grasses. Cut the sward to a height of 5cm every two months or when the sward reaches 15cm. Remove all cut material to avoid smothering the sward. Where persistent weeds are a problem, spot treat with Glyphosate or dig-out. Future maintenance The sward should be well established after the first 1 months and contain a diverse range of species. Cut to 7.5cm during March/April and remove cuttings. The second cut should take place at the end of the flowering season during August/October (the flowering period may alter slightly according to climatic conditions). Remove all cuttings. The site may require further cuts in the autumn period to remove untidy growth in an extended growing season. Maintenance summary First year First Cut 5cm March/April (Spring Seeding 1st cut in May) Cut every months or when sward reaches 15cm Final Cut September/October Remove all cuttings Future years First Cut 7.5cm March/April Second Cut 7.5cm August/October Remove all cuttings Cornfield annuals Make the first cut in early March and a second cut once the flowering period is over September/October. Harrow autumn or spring to regenerate annuals.
