The Aztecs, who are making their seventh regional appearance in the last eight years and 13th overall, will be among the field vying for a spot in the NCAA championship series, scheduled for May in Sugar Grove, Ill. SDSU garnered the eighth seed out of 18 teams in the Lubbock Regional, earning one of 43 at-large bids to the NCAA tournament after finishing second at the Mountain West Championship on April 19. A total of 72 NCAA Division I schools received invitations to play in one of four regionals that will be held concurrently this week in Albuquerque, N.M., (New Mexico), Columbus, Ohio, (Ohio State), Athens, Ga. (Georgia) and Lubbock, Texas (Texas Tech). Joining the Aztecs on the par-72, 6,593-yard Rawls Course will be 17 other teams, including 12 opponents ranked in the top 50, along with six individual competitors (96 golfers overall). The top six squads and the three highest finishing individuals not on those teams will move on to nationals from each of the four regionals. The field will complete 18 holes (54 total) of stroke play each of the three days following a practice round on Sunday, May 7. SDSU will tee off with Brigham Young and Texas Tech for Monday s opening round, which is set to get underway at 8 a.m. CT on hole No. 1, while pairings for Tuesday and Wednesday will be based on team scores. Live hole-by-hole results courtesy of Golfstat will be available for all three rounds on GoAztecs.com. Aztec Lineup Avg. Blair will be making her fourth consecutive appearance in regional competition for the Aztecs, while Lacey and Chaves find themselves in the thick of the fight for the third straight year, joining Escauriza, a first-time participant. In addition, Vivaldi played in consecutive regionals during her three seasons at Colorado before transferring to SDSU last summer. Blair who owns a team-best stroke average for the season, is ranked 52nd nationally according to Golfstat and occupies the 63rd spot in the latest Golfweek/Sagarin ratings. Chaves, who has been the Aztecs top finisher in their last two regionals, will be making just her second appearance of the spring after competing at the Northrop Grumman Challenge in February. Blair is the sole veteran from the Aztecs last visit to the Lone Star State in October 2013, when the Scarlet and Black finished seventh out of 18 squads at the highly competitive Betsy Rawls Longhorn Invitational in Austin, Texas. A freshman at the tournament, Blair tied for seventh individually with a 5-under 211 en route to earning Mountain West Golfer of the Month honors. SDSU At NCAA Regionals The Aztecs will embark on their seventh trip to NCAA regionals in the last eight years and 10th overall as a team. SDSU earned team bids in 1999 (19th), 2001 (15th), 2004 (15th), 2010 (t-15th), 2011 (17th), 2012 (t-20th), 2014 (t-21st), 2015 (11th) and 2016 (12th). The program was also represented by individual golfers in 1996, 1997, 2000 and Next week s venture marks the second time the Aztecs will be competing in a Texas-based regional as a team, following the 1999 squad, Lubbock Regional 5/2 4/26 SDSU Record Team Rankings Golfstat Golfweek vs. In San Diego State (6-16-1) UCLA Arizona State Furman Kent State Texas Oklahoma Brigham Young Texas Tech TCU UNLV Oregon Iowa State Oregon State Murray State Georgetown Richmond Sacred Heart which finished 19th at the NCAA West Regional at Pine Forest Country Club in Houston. Including this season, SDSU will have played in 13 different cities and 10 different states in its NCAA regional history. Heather MacRae boasts SDSU s best individual finish when she tied for 11th place at Stanford in 2004; Malin Enarsson is second with her 12th-place performance in 2010; Mila Chaves sits in third with an 18th-place effort in 2016, while Paige Spiranac ranks fourth after tying for 19th as an individual in The Competition The Aztecs are one of 13 teams in the Lubbock Regional ranked among the top 50 in the latest Golfstat rankings released May 2. Of those squads, six reside in the top 25, including No. 2 UCLA, followed by Arizona State (7), Furman (10), Kent State (15), Texas (18) and Oklahoma (23). The Aztecs own a record in head-to-head results against 10 of their 17 regional foes during the campaign, topping Brigham Young (1-0), TCU (1-0), Iowa State (1-1), Oregon State (1-1), UCLA (1-2) and UNLV (1-4) on one previous occasion. A Look At The Course The host site of the 2017 NCAA Lubbock Regional is the par-72, 6,593-yard Rawls Course, situated on the northwest edge of Texas Tech University. Formerly an agricultural research facility, the 268- acre tract was designed by renowned architect Tom Doak of Renaissance Golf, Inc., and completed in September Emulating the land to the south and east of Lubbock where the plains begin to fall into the valleys and canyons leading to the Caprock region, the Rawls Course features wide undulating fairways, contoured bent grass greens and numerous deep bunkers, all devised to simulate natural erosion. Lubbock s strong prevailing winds also figured considerably in the final layout. In the April 10, 2017 issue of Golfweek, the Rawls Course was ranked No. 2 in Texas on the publication s list of best courses to play in each state. Constructed through a major gift by Texas Tech alumnus Jerry S. Rawls, the course also served as host for the NCAA Division I Men s Golf Regional in 2015 and will welcome the NJCAA Men s Championships in Backspin: 2016 Stanford Regional San Diego State saw its season come to a conclusion after finishing in 12th place at the 2016 NCAA Stanford Regional. The Aztecs shot a combined 15-over-par 299 during the final round for a 54-hole total of 43-over 895 on the par-71, 6,269-yard Stanford Golf Course. SDSU was in the hunt to secure its first-ever NCAA Championships appearance, climbing to within two shots of the requisite top-six placement through nine holes. However, the Aztecs combined for just three birdies after the turn to drop out of contention. Still, SDSU managed its lowest three-round score in a regional tournament.

Starting from the 10th tee, the Aztec sophomore drained a team-high four birdies, including an impressive conversion on the par-4, 399-yard No. 13, which ranked as the toughest hole of the final round. Krause was on pace to set an individual school record for lowest 18-hole in regional competition after recording six pars and a birdie on the back nine. However, an untimely triple on the par-4, 355-yard ninth sandbagged those plans. Still, the native Oregonian made SDSU s biggest gain on the leaderboard, vaulting 19 spots into the 62nd position at 16-over 229 in her initial regional appearance. Mila Chaves was the only other Aztec player to display upward mobility during the final round, climbing six places into a tie for 18th at 6-over 219 on the strength of a final-round 72. The SDSU sophomore played steady golf throughout the day, notching 15 pars and birdie on the par-3 4th to crack the top-20 in regional action for the second year in a row. Conversely, the remaining Aztec starters lost ground, including Emma Henrikson, who slipped 18 places into a tie for 42nd at 11- over 224 after logging a 77 in her final round of collegiate competition. The 2016 Mountain West Player of the Year got off to a rocky start with two bogeys and a double on her first five holes before reeling off two birdies and six pars through the turn. However, the SDSU senior was unable to sustain the momentum, suffering two doubles and a bogey on her final five greens. Sophomore Georgia Lacey also faltered down the stretch, posting back-to-back double-bogeys on No. 6 and 7 en route to a final-round 79. The Torrey Pines High alumna sank two birdies, but slipped into a tie for 77th at 21-over 234, as six additional bogeys proved too much to overcome. Junior Sirene Blair struggled as well, tumbling from the 24th spot into a tie for 57th on the heels of an atypical 81. The Utah native was snowed under by an avalanche of nine bogeys and a double, finishing the tournament with a 15-over 228. USC (+4) shot a collective 285 over the final 18 holes to tie host Stanford for the regional team title as the top six schools advanced to the 2016 NCAA Championships in Eugene, Ore. Joining the Women of Troy and the Cardinal were Ohio State, North Carolina, Arkansas and Virginia, along with individuals Andrea Wong of UC Davis, Wake Forest s Jennifer Kupcho and Sarah Burham of Michigan State. Wong fired a tournament-low 65 during the final round to tie Virginia s Elizabeth Szokol for medalist honors at 4-under 209, while second-round leader Alana Uriell of Arkansas (-3) finished one stroke behind in third, followed closely by USC s Tiffany Chan (-2) and Casey Danielson of Stanford (-2). Escauriza Named MW Freshman of the Year Fernanda Escauriza was named Mountain West Freshman of the Year as the league announced its postseason awards on April 27. In addition, Escauriza garnered second-team all-mw accolades, joining first-team selections Sirene Blair and Georgia Lacey to give the Aztecs three all-conference honorees in the same season for the fifth time in head coach Leslie Spalding s six-year tenure. With Escauriza s award, SDSU has also garnered MW top freshman honors for the fifth time in program history, following Blair (2014), Emma Henrikson (2013), Christine Wong (2010) and Malin Enarsson (2009). Not to be outdone, Blair become just the third Aztec women s golfer to receive all-conference recognition in four consecutive seasons, joining Henrikson and Wong, while Lacey collected her first career all-mw certificate. Escauriza captured medalist honors at the Mountain Championship, held April in Rancho Mirage, Calif., where she posted a 6-under-par 210 to become the Aztecs first individual champion at a conference tournament. In addition, the native Paraguayan tied the tied the school record for lowest 54-hole score at the MW Championship, along with fellow teammate and compatriot Mila Chaves, who accomplished the feat in Escauriza, who arrived on Montezuma Mesa at the semester break in January, has maintained a scoring average through five stroke-play events, which ranks third on the team this spring. At the Meadow Club Intercollegiate in March, she also tied for 15th on the leaderboard, helping the Scarlet and Black claim its second tournament title of the season. Meanwhile, Blair, who occupies the second spot in the MW with a team-best scoring average, is coming off an eighth-place performance at the conference championship. The Aztec senior has been the team s No. 1 finisher in five events this year, including a solo second-place effort at the season-opening Branch Law Firm/Dick McGuire Invitational, where she finished alone in second place after posting a 13-under 203 to set a school record for lowest 54-hole score. In addition, Blair established another program standard for 18 holes in that tournament after carding a 64 in the second round, highlighted by nine birdies. Later in the spring opener, Blair tied for seventh at the highly competitive Northrop Grumman Regional Challenge against a stacked field that featured eight top-30 schools and was the squad s top golfer at the Meadow Intercollegiate with a solid fourthplace effort to help SDSU secure the crown. For her career, she has recorded 15 top-10 placements, including 10 in the top five. In addition, Lacey ranks second on the squad and seventh in the MW with a stroke average, sporting four top-20 performances on the year, including a solo 17th-place showing at the conference tournament. Last October, she was the Aztecs top finisher at the Stanford Intercollegiate and the Las Vegas Collegiate Showdown, tying for second and 15th, respectively, to earn MW Women s Golfer of the Month honors. Lacey also tied for the team lead with a 3-1 record in match play at the highly competitive SDSU March Mayhem event at The Farms Golf Club and landed in the ninth spot at the Meadow Club Intercolleigate to help lift the Scarlet and Black to its aforementioned team title. Fernanda Escauriza became the first-ever SDSU women s golf medalist in a conference tournament after winning the 2017 Mountain West Championship on April 19. Rewind: Escauriza Medals at MW Championship San Diego State s Fernanda Escauriza captured the individual title at the 2017 Mountain West Championship after shooting a 2-under-par 70 during the final round at Mission Hills Country Club. With her total, the Aztec freshman completed the event with a 54-hole total of 6-under 210 to become the program s first-ever medalist in a conference tournament. Fernanda played extremely well in all three rounds, said SDSU head coach Leslie Spalding. She told me this course reminded her a lot of her home track in Paraguay because of its firmness. It was certainly fun to watch her this week, and she has the ability to accomplish anything she wants in golf. As a team, the Aztecs landed in the runner-up spot behind UNLV for the second year in a row after logging a 5-over 293 during the final round on the par-72, 6,270-yard Dinah Shore Tournament Course. SDSU led by as many as three strokes early on the front nine Wednesday, but was unable to withstand the Rebels surge after the turn. With their result, the Aztecs finished three shots in back of the leader at 7-over 871 for the week, while San José State (+12) took third, followed by Fresno State (+25) and New Mexico (+31). Escauriza, who began the day in a tie for second on the individual leaderboard, got off to a wobbly start after notching a pair of bogeys on the par-4 third and the par-3 fifth following a birdie-4 at No. 2. However, the soon-to-be champion played spot-free golf the rest of the way, notching three birdies on the back nine, including a successful drain on the par-5, 485-yard 18th to win by two shots

3 SAN DIEGO STATE WOMEn'S GOLF NoTES PAGE 3 over San José State s My Leander, who wound up at 4-over 212. Sirene Blair also notched a top-10 placement in her final MW Championship appearance for SDSU, finishing alone in eighth at 3-over 219 on the heels of a 74. The Aztec found birdies elusive after circling her scorecard at No. 2, but a steady diet of 14 pars was not enough to ease the sting of three untimely bogeys. Haleigh Krause also matched Blair with a 74, highlighted by an eagle-3 at No. 2. The SDSU junior was cruising after reeling off six consecutive pars; however, a bogey at the par-5 ninth would foreshadow trouble on the back nine. Despite carding six additional pars after the turn, Krause was undone by three straight bogeys on No , finishing the week in 11th place with a 5-over 221. In addition, Georgia Lacey had her final-round 75 count toward the Aztecs team score.the Aztec junior opened with nine straight pars, but quickly ran out of steam thanks to four bogeys on her first five holes after the turn. Lacey regrouped with three pars and a birdie on the par-4 No. 16, which ranked as the fourth-toughest hole of the tournament. With her spurt, the Torrey Pines High alum managed to move up one spot into 17th at 9-over 225. Rounding out the SDSU delegation was Natalie Vivaldi, who slipped three places into a tie for 13th at 7-over 223 after settling for a final-round 77. The Aztec senior sank three birdies on the day, the second-highest total on the team, but four bogeys and two doubles hastened her drop Highlights Despite the loss of Emma Henrikson, the program s first All-American, and a schedule replete with high-level competition, San Diego State enjoyed another successful season in , posting top-10 team finishes in seven of eight stroke-play tournaments, highlighted by a pair of team titles at the Golfweek Conference Challenge and Meadow Club Intercollegiate. The Aztecs opened the season last September at the Branch Law Firm/Dick McGuire Invitational in Albuquerque, N.M., where Sirene Blair finished alone in second place after posting a 13-under 203 to set a school record for lowest 54-hole score. In addition, the SDSU senior established another program standard for 18 holes after carding a 64 in the second round, highlighted by nine birdies. its second tournament title of the season at the Meadow Club Intercollegiate in Fairfax, Calif., edging runner-up BYU by four strokes. Four Aztecs finished among individual top 15, led by Blair (-1), who tied for fourth, while Lacey (+2) tied for ninth, followed by Vivaldi (T-12th, +4) and freshman Fernanda Escauriza (T-15th, +6). With its result, SDSU has collected two tournament crowns in the same season for the third year in a row, but just the fourth time since the campaign. After a two-week hiatus, the Aztecs conducted their fifth annual home tournament, the SDSU March Mayhem, which featured a match-play format for the third year in a row. In a competitive field that included eight top-40 schools, San Diego State finished eighth with a 1-3 ledger, dropping three matches by a narrow 3-2 margin. The Aztecs were led by Lacey and Vivaldi, who posted 3-1 individual records for the week. At San Diego State s annual scholar-athlete banquet on April 10, the Aztec women s golf program was presented with the award for high team grade point average for the 2016 fall semester. On May 3, the SDSU women s golf team, along with the Aztec women s volleyball squad, were publicly recognized by the NCAA after both programs turned in perfect 1,000 multi-year APR scores. The APR is an annual scorecard of academic achievement calculated for all Division I sports teams. The most recent APRs are multi-year rates based on scores from the , , and academic years. In addition to Fernanda Escauriza, head coach Leslie Spalding signed three additional standouts to National Letters of Intent last fall. Rounding out SDSU s talented recruiting class are Gioia Carpinelli (Boppelsen, Switzerland), Cameron Lee (Tustin, Calif.) and Sara Kjellker (Hollviken, Sweden), all of whom will be eligible to compete for the Aztecs in time for the campaign. Just A Chip Shot Away The top six teams and the three highest finishing individuals not on one of those squads will advance out of the NCAA Lubbock Regional to the national championships, slated for May in Sugar Grove, Ill. A total of 24 teams and 12 individuals will complete 54 holes of stroke play over a threeday span at Rich Harvest Farms, with the top 15 squads and nine highest placing individuals advancing to a fourth round of stroke play, which will determine the top eight schools for match play competition, as well as the 72-hole stroke play individual champion. The top eight teams after 72 holes of play will be placed into a bracket with the No. 1 seed playing the No. 8 seed, the No. 2 seed playing the No. 7 seed, the No. 3 seed playing the No. 6 seed and the No. 4 seed playing the No. 5 seed in match play. SDSU has previously sent an individual to the NCAA national tournament, but has never qualified as a team. Sirene Blair Later that month, the Aztecs returned to the Mountain time zone and successfully defended their crown at the Golfweek Conference Challenge in Wolcott, Colo., withstanding a late charge by Denver midway through the final round to win by eight shots at 2-over 866. Senior Natalie Vivaldi tied for fifth place at 2-under 214, highlighted by a personal-best 67 en route to her highest finish as a collegian. In addition, Blair and junior Mila Chaves tied for 10th at 1-over 217, while junior Haleigh Krause tied for 14th with a 3-over 219. SDSU s battled the elements in its final two tournaments of the fall, as inclement weather reduced the Stanford Intercollegiate and Las Vegas Collegiate Showdown to 36 holes each. Georgia Lacey was the Aztecs top finisher in both events, earning Mountain West Women s Golfer of Month honors for October in the process. At Stanford, the SDSU junior tied for second with a 2-under 140, topping 29 individuals ranked in the Golfstat top 100, including four players in the top 10. The Torrey Pines High alum, who led the prestigious event in par-4 scoring (3.83), shot a career-low 4-under 67 in round one, highlighted by a team-best six birdies to go with an eagle-3 on the par-5, 495-yard No. 1 hole. Lacey also recorded a 4-under 140 on the par-72 layout in Las Vegas to tie for 15th on the individual leaderboard. In addition, Blair vaulted 43 places into a tie for 28th with Krause after shooting a final-round 67, helping SDSU to a respectable fourth-place tie in the team standings out of 19 schools. SDSU opened its second semester slate in early February at Ohio State s Northrop Grumman Regional Challenge in Palos Verdes Estates, Calif., competing in a stacked field that featured eight top-30 squads. The Aztecs tied for eighth in the event at 27-over 879, while Blair finished in a four-way tie for seventh with an even-par 213, highlighted by a second-round 66 for her second-lowest 18-hole total of the year. Following a ninth-place standing at the Bruin Wave Invitational, San Diego State captured Head Coach Leslie Spalding Leslie Spalding, who was hired in August 2011, is in her sixth season as head coach of the Aztecs. Since her arrival on Montezuma Mesa, Spalding has guided SDSU to nine team tournament titles, including the 2015 Mountain West Championship, which marked the team s first-ever conference crown. For her efforts, the Billings, Mont., native was named MW Women s Golf Coach of the Year. During her tenure, Spalding s players have garnered 16 all-conference accolades, including Emma Henrikson, who became the team s first-ever All-American after receiving honorable mention in In addition, Spalding s charges have excelled in the classroom, earning 15 all-academic honors from the MW to go with six scholar-athlete certificates. Spalding played on the LPGA Tour from 1996 to 2005, competing in 215 events with seven top-10 finishes while earning more than $600,000 in prize money. After completing her playing career, she served as the head women s golf coach at Montana State from As a collegian, Spalding attended the University of Alabama on a golf scholarship from 1987 to 1991 and received her bachelor s degree in telecommunication/film with a minor in marketing in 1992.
