The MW Championship returns to Mission Hills for a third straight season after a two-year run in 2011 and 2012 at the Wigwam Resort in Litchfield Park, Ariz., just outside of Phoenix. During the 2009 and 2010 campaigns, the event was held at the Black Horse Golf Club in Seaside, Calif., near Monterey. In the league s 16-year history, the championships have also been conducted in three other states: Oregon, Utah and New Mexico. SDSU Lineup Avg. Rounds Emma Henrikson Sirene Blair Mila Chaves Georgia Lacey Paige Spiranac Aztec Lineup For This Week Fourth-year San Diego State head coach Leslie Spalding will accompany five golfers to the Coachella Valley this week, featuring junior Emma Henrikson (Malmö, Sweden), sophomore Sirene Blair (South Jordan, Utah), freshmen Mila Chaves (Asunción, Paraguay) and Georgia Lacey (Del Mar, Calif.), along with senior Paige Spiranac (Scottsdale, Ariz.). Henrikson and Spiranac will be appearing at the MW Championship for the third year in a row, while Blair finds herself in the thick of the fight for the second straight season, joining Chaves and Lacey, who are first-time participants. Henrikson occupies the 64th spot nationally in the latest Golfstat Cup standings, while Blair enters the tournament in the 93rd position. SDSU At The MW Championship In the 15-year history of the Mountain West, San Diego State has finished fifth at the conference tournament on seven occasions, second, third and seventh twice, while placing fourth and sixth once each. Last season, the Aztecs landed in a three-way tie for third after occupying the fifth position in SDSU also posted back-to-back fifth-place performances in 2010 and 2011 to go along with another third-place effort in In addition, the Scarlet and Black wound up seventh in both 2008 and 2009, following a sixth-place result in The program was also fifth in 2003, 2005 and 2006, fourth in 2004 to go along with consecutive runner-up efforts in 2001 and The Aztecs were disqualified in the inaugural tournament in 2000, after two players turned in incorrect scorecards in the third and final round. Individually, the highest SDSU finish occurred in 2012, when Christine Wong tied for first place with a 1-over 217, capturing MW Golfer of the Year honors. Jenna Wilson owns the school record for the best score in a 54-hole league tournament with a 2-over-215, tying for fifth in The Competition Four of SDSU s opponents at the MW Championship are among the top 100 teams in the latest Golfstat rankings released April 15. UNLV is the highest rated squad in the field, landing in the 20th spot this week, while Aztecs check in at No. 27, followed by San José State (45), Fresno State (69) and Boise State (80). In addition, SDSU will Mountain West 4/16 4/15 SDSU Record Team Rankings Golfweek Golfstat vs. In San Diego State UNLV San José State Fresno State Boise State Nevada Colorado State New Mexico Wyoming lock horns with Nevada (102), Colorado State (108), defending champion New Mexico (118) and Wyoming (155). The two remaining MW members, Air Force and Utah State, do not sponsor women s golf programs. The Aztecs own a sparkling 18-3 record in head-to-head results against all eight conference foes during the campaign, including a 3-0 mark vs. Colorado State, Nevada and New Mexico. SDSU also possesses an unblemished record this year against Fresno State (2-0), Boise State (1-0), San José State (1-0) and Wyoming (1-0), while maintaining the upper hand against UNLV (4-3). The Aztecs defeated the Rebels during match play at the SDSU Farms Invitational in March and also prevailed over their Silver State rivals en route to team championships at the Ptarmigan Ram Classic and the Las Vegas Collegiate Showdown last fall. Individually, eight of the top-10 finishers return from last year s conference championship, including medalist Guðrun Björgsvindóttir of Fresno State, who edged SDSU s Emma Henrikson and Dana Finkelstein of UNLV by one stroke to claim the title. San José State s Regan De Guzman (4th) is also back in the mix, along with Manon Molle of New Mexico (5th), Fresno State s Madchen Lyn (6th), Samantha Martin of Boise State (7th) and the Aztecs Paige Spiranac (10th). Harley Dubsky of UNLV, who enters the week ranked second in the MW, is also expected to contend, along with San José State s Megan Osland and My Leander, Sirene Blair and Mila Chaves of SDSU and Boise State s Genevieve Ling. Backspin: 2014 MW Championship Emma Henrikson finished in a tie for second place on the individual leaderboard to lead the Aztec women s golf team during the final round of the 2014 Mountain West Championship at Mission Hills Country Club. As a team, SDSU landed in a three-way for third after completing the tournament with a combined total of 45-over 909 at the par-72, 6,324-yard Dinah Shore Tournament Course. On a breezy day when none of the competitors in the 45-player field shot below par, Henrikson tied for the second-lowest score of the day with a 75, but finished one shot in back of Fresno State s Guðrun Björgsvindóttir, who captured medalist honors after both golfers made par on the 521-yard 18th. UNLV s Dana Finkelstein was also in contention down the stretch, but bogeyed her final two holes to tie Henrikson for the runner-up spot at 3-over 219. Henrikson got off to a quick start with a birdie on her second hole, but was unable to generate further momentum after recording 12 pars and four bogeys the rest of way. Still, the SDSU sophomore managed to climb three places from Friday s round to record her highest finish as an Aztec. Meanwhile, Paige Spiranac finished strong as well, posting the lowest round in the field on Saturday with a 2-over 74 to jump five places into a tie for 10th at 9-over 225. The SDSU junior experienced early bogeys at Nos. 2-3, before regrouping with nine pars and two birdies, including an impressive make on the par-3, 151-yard No. 14, which played as the third-toughest hole during the final round. Despite two bogeys on her final four holes, Spiranac still managed to register her highest finish of the season. Elsewhere, Sirene Blair cracked the top 20 in her first conference tournament action, tying for the 17th position after firing a final-round 79. The Aztec freshman suffered five bogeys on her first 10 holes before draining consecutive birdies on Nos However, a pair of bogeys on her ensuing two holes, followed by an untimely double-bogey at No. 17, thwarted her progress up the leaderboard.

Despite five bogeys and consecutive double-bogeys at Nos. 14 and 15, the Aztec freshman finished strong with two pars sandwiched around at birdie at the 17th to climb five places into a tie for 29th at 21-over 237. The SDSU delegation also included junior Amy Alston, who ended the tournament in a tie for 34th a combined 242 after logging a final-round 87. Despite posting the lowest team score of the third round with a 308, the Aztecs were only able to climb two spots as New Mexico (+38) held off a late charge to capture the team title by one stroke over San José State (+39), while Fresno State (+45) and UNLV (+45) tied SDSU for the third position. Following the tournament, the league announced the 2014 all-mountain West women s golf team and individual awards. Emma Henrikson and Sirene Blair were first-team all-conference selections, while Paige Spiranac was a second-team choice. In addition, Blair received freshman of the year honors, becoming the fourth Aztec to earn such distinction along with Malin Enarsson (2009), Christine Wong (2010) and Henrikson (2013). For the second straight year, Henrikson and Spiranac garnered all-mw accolades, while Blair collected her first all-conference award. Henrikson led the squad with a stroke average during the regular season, which ranked sixth in the league, while Blair (74.27) followed close behind in seventh, posting four top-10 finishes on the year. Spiranac also found herself among the MW leaderboard during the campaign, ranking 14th with a stroke average to go with a pair of top-15 finishes. Mountain West History 101 New Mexico dominated the first four years of the Mountain West Women s Golf Championship, claiming the team title by at least 11 shots in each of the first three years before coming back to defeat UNLV in 2003 by one stroke. The Rebels got their revenge against UNM over the next three years, edging the Lobos by two strokes in both 2004 and 2005 to capture the conference crown before winning by five shots in After TCU registered a onestroke victory over Brigham Young in 2007, New Mexico topped the Cougars by 19 strokes on its home course in the 2008 edition to usher in a three-year reign, which included two straight decisions over runner-up TCU in 2009 and However, the Horned Frogs managed to capture two consecutive championships of their own in 2011 and 2012 before bolting for the Big 12. Since then, the MW tournament has witnessed a return to a familiar pattern, with UNLV and New Mexico capturing the last two titles, respectively. Six different schools have had a player collect medalist honors, including New Mexico (2001, 2003, 2007, 2008, 2010, 2013), UNLV (2004, 2005, 2006, 2011), Wyoming (2000, 2009) Colorado State (2002, TCU (2012) and Fresno State (2014). The first Mountain West Championship took place in 2000 at the Sunbrook Golf Club in St. George, Utah. The tournament then moved to Sunriver Resort in central Oregon over the next five seasons; however, the first round of the 2003 event was conducted at the Awbrey Glen Golf Course in Bend, Ore., due to inclement weather. The tournament has also been played at the Entrada at Snow Canyon Resort in St. George ( ), the UNM Championship Course in Albuquerque, N.M. (2008), the Black Horse Golf Course in Seaside, Calif. ( ) and the Wigwam Resort in Litchfield Park, Ariz. ( ). New Mexico and UNLV own at least a share of all 12 Mountain West championship records Highlights Despite a roster with three freshmen and a schedule replete with high-level competition, San Diego State enjoyed another successful campaign in , posting top-10 team finishes in six of seven regular-season tournaments, highlighted by a pair of team titles during the fall slate. Buoyed by the 1-2 individual finish of Emma Henrikson and Sirene Blair, the Aztecs took home the crown at the season-opening Ptarmigan Ram Classic in Fort Collins, Colorado, where the Scarlet and Black (+6) topped Mountain West rival UNLV by eight strokes. Blair kept the momentum rolling at the Branch Law Firm/Dick Mc- Guire Invitational in Albuquerque, New Mexico, with a third-place indvidual performance, earning MW Women s Golfer of the Month honors in the process. By the end of September, the Aztecs climbed as a high as 12th in the Golfweek national rankings. Henrikson and Mila Chaves logged top-five individual performances at the highly competitive Betsy Rawls Longhorn Invitational in Austin, Texas, leading SDSU to a respectable sixth-place finish in the team standings. The Aztecs closed out their fall schedule with a co-championship at the Las Vegas Collegiate Showdown in late October. With its result, the Scarlet and Black claimed two team titles in the same season since winning the Lady Aztec Invitational and UC Riverside Invite during the campaign. After placing eighth in its spring opener at the UC Irvine Invitational, SDSU turned in a gritty fourth-place performance at the Bruin Wave Invite in the San Fernando Valley, battling damp and rainy conditions for the first two rounds. Despite the inclement weather, Blair tied for the runner-up position on the individual leaderboard to garner MW Golfer of the Week accolades. In late March, the Aztecs unveiled a new format for the third installment of the SDSU Farms Invitational as 16 teams competed in four rounds of match play over three days. The Scarlet and Black came away with a solid third-place finish after posting a 3-1 record, highlighted by victories over Long Beach State, UNLV and Arizona State. The Aztecs lone blemish at the tournament was a defeat to eventual champion Tennessee, one of eight schools in the stacked field ranked among the Golfstat top 40. SDSU sports three players among the top 10 on the Mountain West individual leaderboard, including Henrikson, who ranks fourth with a stroke average, followed closely by Blair (7th ) and Chaves (8th ). Just A Chip Shot Away The winner of this week s Mountain West Championship earns an automatic bid to the NCAA regional tournament. If SDSU claims the MW title, it will head to the NCAA regionals, May 7-9, in either St. George, Utah, South Bend, Ind., San Antonio, Texas, or Raleigh, N.C. The trip to the NCAAs would be the team s fifth in the last six years after three individuals, Christine Wong, Emma Henrikson and Paige Spiranac, were invited to compete in the Central Regional in Each of the four regional tournaments will include 18 schools, along with six individuals not on those qualifying teams. The participants will be selected by the NCAA women s golf committee and will be announced on Monday, April 27 at 7 p.m. ET (4 p.m. PT) on the Golf Channel. The top six squads and the three highest finishing individuals not on those teams from each region will advance to the NCAA championships, May 22-27, in Bradenton, Fla. Head Coach Leslie Spalding Leslie Spalding, who was hired in August of 2011, is in her fourth season as head coach of the Aztecs. A native of Billings, Mont., Spalding played on the LPGA Tour from 1996 to 2005, competing in 215 events with seven top-10 finishes and earning more than $600,000 in prize money. After completing her playing career, she served as the head women s golf coach at Montana State from As a collegian, Spalding attended the University of Alabama on a golf scholarship from 1987 to 1991 and received her bachelor s degree in telecommunication/film with a minor in marketing in 1992.
