The Perfect Club Selection Tee Talk JULY ~ From the President... Welcome: Marissa Fleming Marissa joins Kingston Beach Golf Club on Monday, July 4 th, as our new Secretary Manager. Marissa comes to us with a strong administration background and, together with Amanda, we look forward to the continuing efficient and happy administration of our Club. Please introduce yourself to Marissa and make her welcome. Thank You: Neil Opbroek I cannot thank Neil enough for the wonderful job he has done these past eight months (very ably assisted by Amanda) in sorting out and overseeing the administration of the Club. Neil s expertise and experience in this role has been vital to the ongoing success of the Club, and enables us to hand over an organized administration to Marissa. Thank you: John St Hill At the Nettlefold auction in March this year, John purchased a painting of the original Red House. The original painting was by John Eldershaw, and because of the strong connection between the Nettlefolds and our Clubhouse, John very generously donated a framed copy of the painting to the Club. The painting hangs near the fireplace, next to the painting of Robert Nettlefold, and I would urge all members to enjoy this piece of history. Thank you John. We have recently sought Kingborough Council interest in the possible purchase by them of the block of land at the back of the 10 th tee. We have suggested several possible uses for this land, one being a parking area for park & ride commuters. I would urge any members who may know a councilor, to lobby them for the purchase of this land. Not only would this benefit the community, it would also greatly benefit the club. We have now passed the shortest day, so that means more time for golf, more time for practice. and lower handicaps! Russell ******************************
...Captains Report... As many of you would have already discovered, the dead gum trees lining the 4 th, 5 th and 17 th fairways are being removed. The removal of these trees is important given the amount of potential widow makers there are. Please be careful whilst playing in any poor conditions around these trees until the course staff can fell and remove the limbs from the course. With regards to these areas, I have been asked if the intent is to re-plant any blackwoods or any other type of trees in place of the removed gums. Over the next 12 to 18 months I see the best option is to reclaim the ground from its current extremely poor condition and grow some quality turf for a more enjoyable experience. Once this has been achieved some consideration can then be given to the question: can/will the hole(s) benefit from any further additions? It was voted at the SGM a couple of months ago that we would remove the trees/sags along the waters edge of the 12 th hole. This will still go ahead, however, due to a number of factors that have been working against us on course, we have been unable to get to this task as yet. Since the Easter long weekend, we have been fighting a continual battle with excess water on the course. This is not new to the members, however it is my number one priority and direction to all the course staff to do everything in their power to present a course that can be played and enjoyed for 12 months of the year. Unfortunately this means that some of the winter projects can t progress as quickly as we would have liked. I was fortunate to have a couple of discussions recently with some enthusiastic volunteers, whom are willing to lend a hand with regards to some of these projects. With their help I m confident we can continue to press on in spite of weather conditions conspiring against us. One further issue that has been raised is the current cover (or lack thereof) of the catchment pit in front of 4 th tee. We are investigating the possibility of replacing this with something that is cost neutral whilst remaining unobtrusive. This should also serve as a reminder to all, to please be cautious around this area, as the current cover is not built to withstand the weight of someone walking on it. My advice is, if you hit a ball into the middle of it, play a provisional. KBGC has now undergone the new course ratings assessment. Brett has informed me that assessors were very thorough and worked through a number of different scenarios for each level of golfer (Men, Women, Vets and Juniors). I look forward to reading the final report and seeing how this will affect us when visiting local and interstate clubs. continued. Kingborough Glazing
...Captains Report...continued Getting up and going in the middle of winter is never an easy task. For me, if I m due for an early tee-off there are the dreaded thoughts prior to each strike trying desperately not to hit one skinny. Having done it many times, I completely understand that playing through the current wet conditions has its drawbacks. My thoughts on preferred lies through the green are that, whilst I don t wish upon anyone to have to play the ball with mud on it, I keep coming back to first rule I learnt from my dad (about golf) play the ball as it lies. Playing with dad, I quickly learnt that golf, at times, seemed totally unfair. I don t know if this was a reflection on Dad or the game but I persisted anyway. However from recent conversations with numerous players of all standards we have decided to trial preferred lies from the fairways only. There will be the occasion when one or two holes will be preferred lies through the green, however I would encourage everyone to make sure that they check in with the local rules board before venturing out. If unsure, Brett is always available to clear up any misunderstandings before competitions. Finally, a big congratulations to all the course staff for their sensational efforts over the past few weeks. Adrian has been taking a well deserved break, and in his absence Zac has led the team brilliantly. The greens are continuing to roll beautifully, well done. Happy golfing, and remember to practice those short putts!...pro Shop News... **** NEW SATURDAY PRO COMP **** ALONG WITH THE REGULAR SUNDAY PRO COMP, A ** 9 HOLE COMP ** IS NOW BEING PLAYED EVERY SATURDAY AFTERNOON STARTING APROX. 1:00PM A START SHEET FOR THIS COMP HAS BEEN PLACED IN THE FOYER NEXT TO THE REGULAR (BLUE) SATURDAY SHEET ALSO, A REMINDER THAT FABULOUS $$ DISCOUNTS STILL APPLY ON VARIOUS ITEMS IN STORE Keep on Swinging.. Brett
...From the Ladies Captain... Winter has arrived, ushering in cold and frosty mornings which have not helped the already very wet conditions that we have been faced with. I guess old golfers will say this is what winter golf is all about. We have been spoiled over the years and we must remember how well the course recovered after the shocking conditions endured in Pennant finished very successfully for KBGC with our Division 1 team winning the Southern and then the State Pennant Final and our Division 2 Team winning the Southern title, however unable to bring home the State Final. Congratulations to all players and particularly to the Div 1 players Jenny Mc Meekin (captain), Toni Brown, Sue Clark, Sally Edwards, Jane Hyland and Vanessa Watson Our L Oreal Day had to be postponed due to wet weather however the prizes are waiting to be won but it is a bit of a lottery as to when it can be rescheduled. A notice will be posted re: dates ASAP keep looking! I realize it has been very tedious playing Stroke rounds on Tuesdays with the course being so wet. There are so many scheduled Trophy Days which have to be played within a certain time frame that we have no choice. The staff out on the course continue with their hard work let us help them and others by repairing divots and plug marks and making sure bunkers are raked. Often when going to play a bunker shot the bunker has been left unraked by the previous player after playing your shot rake your area and the other unraked area- maybe others will get the message! The Ladies Captain, on behalf of all lady players, would like to thank Neil Opbroek for his untiring patience with us all on Tuesdays and Thursdays. His help to me personally has been invaluable. We welcome Neil to play in the ladies competition now he has been relieved of office duties, however, we have placed certain restrictions on his entry! Thanks Neil. Jane...From the Course Superintendent As most would know, over the past few weeks, Adrian has been away on a well deserved holiday. During this time, course staff have continued to work hard to produce the best possible course week to week. I ask for your continued patience, as due to water damage, some areas of the course are still in poor condition. We have begun a turf rejuvenation program to improve these areas as we move closer to the growing season of spring. Also, thanks to the tropical Tasmanian weather, we have experienced some heavy frosts in the past few weeks. Again, I ask for your patience, as tee times may have to be delayed from time to time. Heavy contact, or traffic, on frost covered turf can cause burn to the turf surface and noticeable leaf bruising. I ask for your cooperation in keeping buggies and carts off fairways and green surrounds when playing in frosty conditions. Finally, I would like to thank the boys on course for their continued efforts, and thanks to the members and all involved with the course, for your continued support. Zac

...General Business... Members may (or may not?) have noticed that the clubhouse flagpole has recently received a facelift. Our thanks go to Martin Burbidge - JMK Construction Group, who provided a cherry picker and Boom Lift operator so we could safely and efficiently complete this long overdue maintenance. The use of this machinery also made possible the removal of ivy off the Red House, plus the fitting of a cap on one of the chimneys, (hopefully stopping possums getting into bed with Brett & Janne). Many thanks, also, to Peter Cooper for coordinating the project, who, along with Boy Lucas, assisted with the removal of the ivy, and to Hugh McKenna for his splicing skills and the new rope for our flag. Our thanks go to Di Males, Fred Newton and David & Toni-Anne Nejman who recently donated freezers to the Club. Your generosity is greatly appreciated....use OF MENS SHOWERS Congratulations to Brian Roberts and Steven Rice, who were among the winners in the STVGA Open Foursomes Championships, held recently at Claremont GC. Well done! Could those who use the men's showers please ensure the taps are fully turned off when you are finished. Of late, taps have been left running, which results in wet, slippery floors, an increase in our hot water usage, which = $$$ on our Aurora account.
