4 Captains Corner Looking ahead We finished the year in a rain soaked day that was very difficult conditions for scoring and not the most conducive to play golf. However we all get together for a round of golf, come rain or shine and most importantly are there to enjoy each others company. There was unfortunately one of our members who decided that he had enough of the rain after nine holes and left his fourball and went home. Not only is this not in the spirit of the game as we all have to play in the same conditions, but it is not golf etiquette to simply leave your three playing partners to continue themselves frankly it is extremely rude and selfish. I am sure that all members will agree that this behavior is not in the interests of our club and is totally unacceptable. I sincerely hope that this will be the last time that this sort of situation arises other than for an emergency. I have got a great committee to help me and I am looking forward to a exciting year as your captain. I would like to congratulate Dave Pelan on a splendid job in his year of captaincy - it will be a tough act to follow but one which I look forward to with enthusiasm. 5 Around the course Difficult scoring in rain We had a field of 57 golfers for our last game of the year, played at Gailes GC in wet and very difficult conditions which reflected in the low scores recorded on the day. The other winners of the Gold Cup were Allan Coulson (B Div) and Trevor Cuss (C Div) The first nine was played in persistent rain and keeping the grips dry was an effort in itself never mind trying to hit the ball down the middle of the fairway. Thankfully the second nine was a lot better as the rain stopped and the sun tried to sneak out from behind the clouds. The day belonged to Dave Pelan as he won the Best Golfer of the year award, the A Division Gold Cup as well as being runner up A Division on the monthly event. 6 The Peter Thompson Knockout was one by Nico Schutte and Brian Chambers who beat Allan Coulson and Laurens Hamman in the final. Unfortunately there were several rounds that were not played due to players being unavailable during the monthly meetings. The best score of the day in these trying conditions went to Hugh Brown who won the C Div with a great score of 34 points. This is a super competition and the only one where you and your partner both need to play well to progress. Hopefully next year will be see more entries. 9 Club Handicaps Official AGU handicaps All Nomad club members throughout the world are required to have an official club handicap as part of the membership requirements. The Brisbane club was allowed to be formed without this requirement, on condition that this be implemented within 3 years. The time has come for the committee to look into this matter and see how best we find a solution. One of the proposals being investigated is that those members who are NOT members of a golf club can still be accommodated within a structured framework provided by Golf Queensland. This will allow a number of benefits that are normally only available to full members of a golf club such as: Golf Australia Handicap; Golf Link Card and registration; Personal insurance plan. By obtaining an official AGU handicap may also entitle you to participate in competitions at other golf clubs. The cost of the membership is $99 per annum which will be incorporated into the annual renewal fee from January This was discussed at the AGM after the game on Sunday 5 th December PAGE 9

11 Annual Competitions Competitions explained There are several competitions that are ongoing throughout the playing year as follows: Best Odd The 3 best scores of the odd calendar months of the playing year. Best Even The 3 best scores of the even calendar months of the playing year. Best Golfer of Year The cumulative score of all your games played during the playing year. The more games played the more chance you have of winning. Best Worst Golfer The winners of the crying towel each month will play for this and the winner will be the golfer who scores the most points on Gold Cup day Gold Cup Winner The winners of each division at the monthly games will compete in a separate competition on the last monthly meeting, referred to as Gold Cup. This is separate from the normal monthly competitions and will only be open to the qualifiers. The golfers competing in the Gold Cup will play off an average of your handicaps played during the year which may not necessarily be the same as your handicap on the day for the normal monthly game, which you are still eligible to play on the day. Peter Thompson Knockout This is an optional competition played as a straight knockout with the final played on Gold Cup day by the two remaining teams. PAGE 11

12 Forthcoming Events Next Meeting What s on The next game is at Windaroo GC on Sunday 14th January There are 60 spots available, with a two tee start and the places will be allocated as the registrations are received. Please register via the Nomads website at and book early as numbers are limited and must be confirmed by 8 th November many guests as possible to make this day a great success. Our beneficiary this year is the Prostrate Cancer Foundation of Australia. This is a problem that affects many men every year and we are hoping to raise in excess of $15,000 on the day. Charity Day The annual Charity Day will be played on Friday 27 th May at Gailes GC. We are aiming for a full field of 120 players and although this is early days, we want members to invite as PAGE 12

13 From the Rule Book Through the Green General Rules This is anywhere on the course other than the teeing ground, hazards, and putting green. Normally on television it is wrong when announcers describe that a ball rolled off the green as the ball bounced through the green. Ground under repair (GUR) This is an abnormal ground condition that is marked by the committee. Stakes or lines or both are used to mark the condition. The stakes or lines are in the ground under repair, and the stakes are obstructions. A ball is considered in ground under repair if any part of the ball touches it. You are entitled to relief if either your stance or ball is in the ground under repair.a hole made by a grounds keeper is ground under repair even if it's not marked. Grass clippings or other material piled up for removal are also considered ground under repair even if it's not marked. Grass clippings or other material that are abandoned or left on the course that is not intended to be removed is not ground under repair if not marked. PAGE 13
