And therefore, never send to know for whom the bell tolls; It tolls for thee. November 2013 Captains Corner Our November game was played at Mossel Bay on a glorious sunny day. A very big thank you is due to all the members and visitors who spent the day with us. We especially thank all the members of the Mossel Bay Golf Club for hosting the Southern Cape Nomads and allowing us the use of their facilities on Sunday the 3 rd November It was a real privilege to play the course, which was in such great condition. We also thank all staff and the green keeper thanks to all, the course is in great condition. Thank you to Mossel Bay President, Noel Hudson, my playing partner and particularly the green keeper. We appreciate the efforts you all made to make us feel so welcome. We again owe a huge debt of gratitude to our lovely Pink Ladies, and a special thank you to Christina Nel for standing in for Berti, and Irene Ambrose for helping with the scoring. You all did a great job. We are so fortunate to be able to call on you ladies when needed and appreciate so much the great effort you all make. 2 Thank you to our Vice Captain Ken Spencer for an excellent prize giving. As usual it went very well. Once again thank you to all members who stayed for prize giving. There were only three apologies for non attendance. I thank John Lees for initiating the monthly newsletter. It was very necessary and will help enormously in keeping all our members informed. Thank you to JVC, Dave Meyer for helping the Pink Ladies at the registration table and getting the starters organized. You are a great motivator and we as Nomads appreciate your efforts. Our next game is at George on the 1 st December 2013 and I hope to see a really BIG field for the final game of the year. Jacques Matthee. Thank you to sponsor of the day Christo Langenhoven of Coastal Rigging. I was asked by a golfer how to lower his scores. I replied Start playing nine holes instead of eighteen. It worked for me. It cut my Vice Captain Comments scores in half! What a beautiful day we had at Mossel Bay! Our morning started very early with the first tee off time at 08:00. By the time I got to the course the registration table was in full swing with JVC Dave in charge. Despite the absence of Berti the Pink Ladies, with reinforcement from Christna were on top of the situation. They must be complimented for the efficient manner the prize winners were sorted out despite problems with the computer. The course was in great shape and congratulations must go to the Mossel Bay staff. To the starters thank you and well done. Thank you to Terry and his crew for the great prize table. Thank you to our equipment crew - as always well done. The ha-ka group brought back great memories of our recent Southern Challenge tour. For those of you that did not go you missed a great time! Thank you to Captain Jacques for all the time trying to please everyone with the 2014 Fixtures. I think you have reached a fair conclusion from the many replies we received from our members. I would like to remind you all that our Andrew Mentis game will be played on Friday the 6 th DECEMBER 2013 at Kingswood Golf Club. Gentleman this is

3 the main Nomads fundraiser and it really is every Nomads responsibility to make the effort to play on the day. It is all about raising funds for a needy beneficiary, so please support this worthy cause. Ken Spencer JVC REPORT Prize Winners at Mossel Bay Divisional Winners - Flats Huisamen (A Div) 35 Points, Jacques Matthee (B Div) 38 Points and Hugh Collier (C Div) 36 Points Best Playing Pair - Jacques Matthee and Noel Hudson (74 points) Well done to Hugh Collier the over 55 winner and Claude Wilson on a magnificent 20 points earned the honour of wearing the attractive pink sun hat at the George game next month. Claude if it s any consolation Will Sharpe went from matchbox to runner up on 35! Well done to JVC Dave Meyer who once again did a fine job! Remember Nomads wives and girlfriends are very welcome at Prize Giving. (But not at the same time!) Many golfers prefer golf carts to caddies. The don t count, criticize or laugh! Dave is not a Pink Lady! He just helps. Sunday morning was an early start for us with the first tee off times at 8 o clock. Because of this I made arrangements to stay overnight at a friend s place very close to the Mossel Bay golf course. I arrived at the club at about 06h50 in order to help the Pink ladies set up before we had our first registration. And as usual everything ran smoothly. We did however miss Berti. I would like to thank Claude Wilson and Douw de Lange for helping me as starters. What a wonderful day we had at Mossel Bay. The weather was fantastic and I am sure a lot of nomads got burnt if they did not use sunblock. The golf course was in excellent shape and good scores were shot, well done to all those who played well. Prize giving was well attended for a change and I am sure the newsletter had a lot to do will that, thank you John. Well done to our Capt Jacques and Vice Capt Ken for a great prize giving. 4 Match Secretary Report The field of 64 players at Mossel Bay was made up as follows: The Sponsor of the day Christo Langenhoven (also a SC Nomad) 1 Guest the Pres of Mossel Bay Golf Club Noel Hudson 11 Visitors 51 SC Nomads The scoring was done on the SOP 1 in Cape Town and the SOP 2 in Mossel Bay. Unfortunately, Christina could not complete the scoring on the SOP 2 because her computer crashed. Helen read all the scores to me in Cape Town and we had the prize sheet ready ten minutes after the last cards were handed in. The Pink Ladies with the help of Irene Ambrose, were wonderful and the day went off very well. The day s average score was 30 which resulted in 14 being cut, 13 getting a shot and 25 remained unchanged. Berti Harris On the carpet!!!!! This is an earnest appeal from our Captain in his determined effort to make our Nomads golf affordable to all. What he has suggested to the committee and has been agreed to is the introduction of Silver and Gold Annual Memberships. Members who can afford to pay more or who have companies that could help with physical donations are to be asked to donate R500 for Silver and R1000 for Gold membership. This would be a once off donation each year which will go towards to cost of monthly games thus bringing each Nomads game fee down. We are aware that there are a number of members, particularly the younger ones who are finding it very difficult to afford membership. We are hoping that this experiment will enable more members to become Nomads and help keep existing members. If you feel you can help in this regard you are asked to speak to Captain Jacques. The names of all Silver and Gold Members will be published in our monthly newsletter. We look forward to a generous response from those who can afford it. 6 ANDREW MENTIS ENDOWMENT FUND Some general facts about the Andrew Mentis Endowment Fund, an integral part of all our Nomads Clubs. Our wonderful Pink Ladies! Southern Cape Fixtures for 2014 After a number of questionnaires, meetings and letters from members Captain Jacques was faced with the unenviable task of arranginh fixtures for the coming year. Unfortunately despite an impassioned letter from Stephen Swiegelaar, Oudtshoorn our Founding Club have not been included in the fixtures. There is, however a very strong feeling among the committee that we need to do something for Oudtshoorn and we are looking at an Away Tour where we will play with the club in a Saturday competition. Please support this trip when it occurs. Here are the Fixtures: January 19 th - Kingswood February 16 th Knysna March 16 th - Pezula April 27 th - George May 18 th - Oubaai June 22 nd - Plettenburg Bay July 20 th - Pinnacle Point August 10 th - George September 14 th - Goose Valley October 12 th - Knysna November 16 th - Mossel Bay December 7 th - George The fund was started by Andrew Mentis, a Nomad Founder Member in 1967 in Gauteng. Andrew Mentis still contributes personally to the fund in every club each year by means of an Endowment Policy. Each club forms a subcommittee, which is chaired by the Vice Captain. Monies raised are donated to a pre-selected charity in the form of tangible assets on which the Nomads emblem is displayed. Culmination of activities and handover to Charity takes place at our yearly Andrew Mentis golf day which is also open to the public by invitation. Nationally Andrew Mentis Endowment Fund has raised and donated in almost of R20 million to local charities. Our Southern Cape Andrew Mentis Day is to be held at Kingswood on Friday 6 th December. Let s all support Vice Captain Ken on his big day. Remember it s not too late to arrange a four ball and enter. The ideal format is one Nomad and three visitors.

7 Aims and Objectives of The Nomads Golf Club 1.To Encourage, Promote, Foster and Support the game of golf. 2.To generate funds which may be distributed in the furtherance of golf, and to such charitable causes as Nomads may deem proper. Will Sharpe models the new headgear! 3.To provide an opportunity for Members in all walks of life to meet one another at least once a month in order to make and/or cement new and/or old friendships.
