Attendance: Apologies: BACKWORTH GOLF CLUB Minutes of Annual General Meeting Held on 15 th February, members Apologies were received from Mr G. Sales and Mr J. Robinson Chairman s Opening Remarks: Mr Burdess opened the meeting by welcoming and thanking members for their attendance. Members were asked to observe a minutes silence as a mark of respect to the memory of their fellow members who had passed away during the year. Minutes of Previous Meeting Copies of the minutes of the Annual General Meeting held on 17th February 2012, having been circulated to members, were taken as read, and approved on the proposal of Mr Martin Young and seconded by Mr Graham Henney. Matters Arising There were no matters raised from these minutes. Official Reports for 2012 Annual reports from the Chairman, Hon. Secretary, Hon. Treasurer, Handicap and Competition Secretary, Greens and the Captain were unanimously accepted. Mr Rudling informed the members that the club had realised a profit of over the current year. He then gave an in-depth resume of the benefits that had been achieved through the increase in the golf levy. These included the provision of a practice net for which he thanked Alan Milton for his efforts and the provision of a flat screen monitor for the benefits of the members. Mr Rudling informed members present that it was highly unlikely that a similar surplus could be achieved in future years. This was owing to the increase in the England Golf affiliation fees that had been increased by 300 and increases in meals etc. He thanked the captains of the various teams for their assistance in controlling the cost of the meals. Mr Rudling stated that he had not transferred any monies between the current account and the savings accounts as the low interest rate made this unviable. He wished to record his thanks to Bob Lofthouse who had generously supported the club over the years by giving substantial discounts for the trophies and Herbie Meldrum for his assistance as club auditor. He also thanked the retiring secretary Alan Wilkinson for his help over the passed two years. The Chairman thanked Mr Rudling for this report and congratulated him on the manner in which he had controlled the club income and expenditure over the past year. AUDITORS REPORT Mr. Herbie Meldrum stated that having examined the accounts he was satisfied that they represented an accurate record of the financial position as at 31 st December, 2012 He added that the accounts were very well prepared and therefore easy to Audit and he thanked Mr Rudling for his efforts.
ELECTION OF OFFICIALS The following officials who had been proposed and seconded as per nomination sheet, were elected unopposed President Vice President Chairman Secretary Treasurer Handicap/Competition Secretary Captain Vice Captain ELECTION OF COMMITTEE Mr D Carruthers Mr. H. Meldrum Mr. R. Burdess Mr. A. Milton Mr I. Rudling Mr. G. Sales Mr. J. Reay The following were unanimously elected to serve on the committee Mr. T. Gascoigne Mr. D. Carruthers, Mr. H. Meldrum, Mr J. Renwick, Mr P Harvey, Mr R. McKeen, Mr G. Henney and Mr. D. Bailey (Junior Representative) Notices of Motion The following motion had been submitted by Malcolm McLean and seconded by Alan Wilkinson We the undersigned wish to propose that the allocation of sweep money to the Best Gross is withdrawn and apportionment of sweep monies are amended to the following 4 Ball Better Ball: - 1 st place 50% 2 nd place 30% 3 rd 20% Saturday Stableford: - 1 st place 45% 2 nd place 30% 3 rd 15% 4 th Place 10% Saturday Medal: - 1 st place 45% 2 nd place 30% 3 rd 15% 4 th Place 10% Monthly Medal: - 1 st place 50% 2 nd place 30% 3 rd 20% Sunday Medal: - 1 st place 50% 2 nd place 30% 3 rd 20% Texas Scramble: 1 st place 60% 2 nd place 40% It was pointed out by Mr McLean that the reason for this proposed change was that very few members had any chance in winning the Best Gross prize money. It had therefore been suggested that these monies were giving to a 3rd or 4 th place. It was unanimously agreed that this motion be accepted. ANY OTHER BUSINESS. Mr Nicholson asked if it was possible for the club to hold a Seniors Open Competition. Mr Burdess suggested that if members would like to organise such a
competition this may be possible. Mr Nicholson was asked to look into the possibility of locating a suitable date and then bringing his suggestion to the golf committee. The problems with flooded or unplayable bunkers was discussed at length and it was suggested to either mark the bunkers as out of play by using a blue stake or put up a sign in the locker room stating that all bunkers were out of play. Mr Burdess pointed out that because of the number of the bunkers it may be impractical to use blue stakes but agreed that this matter would be discussed and decided upon by the golf committee. Mr Carruthers informed those present the problems that were being experienced on the ninth fairways. The matter was currently being addressed and it was hoped that they would be rectified by the start of the new season weather permitting. PRESIDENT S CLOSING REMARKS In his closing remarks Mr. Carruthers thanked the members for attending the meeting and also thanked the committee for their work during the year. He then presented Alan Wilkinson with a set of Waterford Wine Glasses and a bottle of wine to mark his retirement from the post of Secretary. Mr Carruthers thanked Mr Wilkinson for the manner in which he had carried out his duties over the past 6 years. Mr Wilkinson replied that he had enjoyed carrying out the secretary s duties and hoped that the members and committee would support his replacement Alan Milton in the same manner that they had supported him over the years. He closed his remarks by wishing all members a good season and hoped we would be blessed with much better weather than last year. There being no further business the meeting was closed at 8:25 pm
Backworth Golf Club. Chairman's Report. Gentlemen it has been an honour to perform the role of Chairman over the last two years. This year the Captain Jackie Reay and Trevor Gascoigne have represented the club extremely well. They have kept up the traditions of Backworth with their hospitality and humour! The Club Championship Stroke play was won on a count-back; the Committee feel this is not an acceptable way to decide such a prestigious competition. This however should not detract from the performance of both finalists. David Gibson became the Club Champion and congratulations to him. Also well done, to Andrew Stokoe, who won the match play. A Notice of Motion will be submitted this evening to change the Club Championship format, I ask for your support in this slight alteration. You the members, have a strong committed Committee, who conduct a lot of unseen work on your behalf, I thank all for their efforts. A special mention must also be given to your Treasurer Ian Rudling; his control of the finances has enabled your funds to be used to improve the facilities available to you. To close thanks to Alan Milton, this has been his first year as Secretary, he has performed the role well, and it has been my pleasure working with him. Good health to you all, and enjoy your golf in R.A.Burdess Chairman Backworth Golf Club.

Without his help and guidance I would have been the proverbial fish out of water. Somebody once told me that the Secretary s job was easy (You just answer a few letter s and take a few minutes) Wrong! Despite the numerous hours I have committed to the post during my first year it has been extremely enjoyable and rewarding. I look forward to my second year. Alan Milton
TREASURER S REPORT FOR ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING FRIDAY 21st FEBRUARY 2014 I am pleased to present the Balance Sheet and Accounts for the year ending 31 December We have a surplus this year of , which is approximately half of that last year. This reduction is due to a variety of factors, the most significant of which are an increase in the cost of team meals, the EGU (England Golf Union) fees increase of 500, the cost of trophies, an extra purchase of fairway mats, and a loss of 420 on members levies. I should remind you that the payment of NUGC/EGU fees is an individual commitment and we pay the NUGC 3.50 and the EGU 7.25 per member. This amounts to 10.75, which is 44% of the 25 the Golf Section receives from the Welfare for each member. The increase in the EGU fee last year was inordinate and several clubs complained, ourselves included. I am relieved to report that these subscriptions have not been increased this year. I hope you can understand from the above that the competition levies we receive are vitally important to our income. Last year was a particularly good year weather wise and the subsequent income was , which almost matched our member levy figure. During the year, thanks mainly to the efforts of our Secretary, Alan Milton, we have the new notice board, which cost 250, of which the Welfare contributed 100. Again, thanks to Alan Milton, we have a new driving mat for the practice net at a cost of 361. This will be in place in the spring. I am pleased that yet again we can keep the member s levy at 25, despite the increase in overall fees, and the competition levy at 2. I hope we have another good year of competitions and golf in general. In conclusion, I should like to thank our Vice President, Herbie Meldrum, for the audit of these accounts and the continuation of his sterling efforts which are so beneficial to the various competitions, matches and the overall good of the Golf Section. You should salute his contribution. Also, thank you to Alan Milton for his invaluable assistance over the year. He was new in post and has shown an outstanding commitment to the cause of Golf and is responsible for the improvements I have previously mentioned. I wish you all a good year of golf in Ian Rudling Hon. Treasurer.

Backworth Golf Club Competition/Handicap Secretaries Report for Annual General Meeting 21st February 2014 Competitions last year were again fiercely contested with a wide selection of winners from all sections. Congratulations to all winners and runners up, and to all others keep trying your day will come. Congratulations must go Mr D Gibson for winning the Club Championship and to Mr A Stokoe who for winning the Match Play Championship. The weather was good to us this golfing year with only one competition having to be re-arranged. The yearly handicap review has been carried out and those members whose handicaps are to be amended will have them adjusted for the start of the next summer season. Last years handicaps will stay in place until the end of winter season for continuity during the remaining competition rounds. I would like to thank the Golf Committee and members for their assistance throughout the year. A special thanks must go to Mr Herbie Meldrum for all the work and assistance he has given me and all the past handicap secretaries, without him the job would be much more difficult. Thank you To all members ENJOY YOUR GOLF FOR 2014 AND REMEMBER ITS JUST A GAME.. M Mclean (handicap/competition sec)
ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING 2014 GREENS REPORT The joint elected Greens Committee for 2013/14 was as follows: Messrs. D. Carruthers, P. Harvey, R. McKeen, and A. Milton (Men s Committee); Mesdames C. Hickson, E. Mitchell, C. Jordan, and J. Turner (Ladies Committee) and Messrs. P. Himlin and J. Robertson (Welfare Management). Mrs. Turner was elected Chairperson and Mr. Carruthers took minutes of all meetings, held in April, May, July and September. The long Winter followed by a cold spring, delayed grass growth, and therefore progress for the Greens staff to get the Golf Course to their required standard, more especially due to the amount of flooding and deposition of silt on the 9 th and 1 st fairways and the 1 st Green. This was largely due to the neglect by the adjoining landowner(northumberland Estates) to clean and maintain their field ditches, which ultimately outfall into the Golf Course s main ditch. This is still an ongoing problem which currently is being dealt with by Welfare management; formal promises made by the Estates manager have, to date, failed to materialise. Credit goes, therefore to the Greens staff, Messrs. Paul Himlin, Paul Forster, Brian Clarke and David Little who made good progress with the usual good course condition, when the weather improved in May to September; the metered water supply for the Greens has substantially increased this year. Course and facilities improvements: Thanks to the perseverance and hard work of Alan Milton and the Greens staff for the provision of the Practice net, now a well used facility and will be enhanced by the recent purchase, by the Golf Committee, of an improved standard of tee matting, to be laid after the winter period. Additional thanks to the Club Captain Jacky Reay and sponsors Bay Plastics, for the supply of materials and again to Alan Milton for the construction and erection of the new Notice Board, a long awaited and much appreciated item, for members and visitors alike, which is sited near the Car park. The various new hard plastic signs on the Course are also appreciated. New Teeing area (3 rd /12 th Holes): Work has already started on this, and staff have laid the timber frame and the gravel base, and the new artificial teeing area will be laid and ready for the Spring. This should reduce the amount of cost of maintenance work on this perpetually shaded area, which deteriorates very quickly when used regularly. The Welfare Management s 5 year plan for course improvement, with regard to removal of certain bunkers, also to try and reduce costs in maintenance etc., and to improve course drainage is still ongoing, when funding permits. In answer to members suggestion, Greens committee recommended, approved by both Golf Committee and Welfare management, a notable change to the boundary(out of bounds) rule which took place on 2 nd /11 th hole this year. From the end of the pipe under the Cricket field to the hedge behind the Green, the ditch became a lateral water hazard. This decision was taken to speed up play generally. The suggestion to redefine similar out of play boundaries on 1 st 7 th and 8 th holes was discussed, but rejected by Committee. Finally Members are reminded to help maintain the condition of the Golf Course by using mats on fairways during winter months, using tee pegs on all Tee boxes, replacing divots, mending pitch marks on Greens, and rake and repair bunkers and observing notices. Enjoy your golf in 2014 and hope for good weather. D. Carruthers Greens Committee
Captains Report season I would like to begin by thanking Jeff Beadling for the honour of being his Vice- Captain and for his tremendous help and support throughout my year as Captain. Every Captain needs a good Vice-Captain by his side and I can honestly say that in Trevor I found one of the best supporters you could wish for. He has been enthusiastic and a great supporter of Backworth golf club & myself in his year as my Vice- Captain. I know he will uphold the proud tradition this position brings when he takes over his role as Captain on the 22 nd February I would like to thank the players who represented Backworth in the league and County in 2013, notably Neil Gascoigne for his performances in the league, a great performance from him. Also well done to David Gibson on winning the club championship for the first time. I would like to congratulate the senior league team for their creditable fourth place in their league, well done. I also wish to congratulate the members of the seniors section, who had two players from Backworth in the top five of the county senior s championship. Special mention should go to the players from Backworth who finished first, second and third in the Northumberland Junior Patrons pair s competition at the city of Newcastle in July. The overall winners were T Gascoigne & M Mclean with 45 points. Second was G Sales & E Walker with 43 points and third was J Beadling & T Davidson with 43 points. The Trophies for this prestigious event are now proudly displayed above the bar. Not bad for a little 10 hole golf course! We played very well as a club in the triangular games finishing a very close second to Blyth, with Newbiggin taking the wooden spoon. Well done to the juniors for their efforts this season, and a special thanks to Sylvia Pankhurst, who has looked after them for the last six years. Sylvia has done an amazing job despite the lack of juniors and the consequent difficulty in organising team events. She is stepping down to concentrate on her own golf and will be greatly missed by all those involved. Let s hope we can get some young blood in the near future. Special thanks to Paul Himlin and his staff for their efforts in maintaining the course to such a high standard last season. We have had many compliments from other clubs. I d like to thank the golf committee for their hard work and support during my year and a special thanks to Malcolm & Herbie for all their hard work and help with Christine s charity day.
At this point, I would like to thank all my supporters from within the club and outside supporters for their generosity and help throughout my year. Thanks to Alf and his staff for the hard work they put in to make sure that all the social events went off well. To Lorrain, thank you and your staff for the fantastic catering at league matches and functions throughout my year. I would also like to wish the Ladies Captain for 2014, Karen Alderson, and her Vice- Captain Audrey Ross all the best for their year. Finally, I give this year s Captain Trevor Gascoigne and his Vice Captain John Robinson my very best wishes and good luck in the forthcoming year. Jack Reay (Captain 2013)
Backworth Golf Club Notice of Motion The following notice of motion has been received and will be voted on at the Annual General Meeting We the undersigned wish to propose the following:- The golf committee propose a change to the format to determine the Club Champion. The proposal is as follows- The champion will be the player who has the lowest gross score over 36 holes. This will form part of the Alan Crosby rounds 1 and 2. If after 36 holes there is a tie the players will play a further 18 holes strokeplay the following Sunday. If still tied they will continue to a sudden death playoff, starting at the first hole, playing under strokeplay rules, until all but one are eliminated. This person will be the winner of the club championship If this proposal is passed, it should not be re-visited for 5 years.
