2 From the GM: Sapelo Hammock Golf Club January Newsletter 1354 Marshview Drive NE Shellman Bluff, GA Happy New Year to all of our Owners, Members and friends of Sapelo Hammock Golf Club! It s time to give thanks and recognize those that have given so much to Sapelo Hammock was a fantastic year at Sapelo and where we are to kickoff 2019 could have not been possible without the continued support and passion of our owners and members. Without you, none of this would be possible. Secondly to all of our volunteers and committee members who give of their time and energy to help create the Sapelo experience. And to all of our friends who come to our golf course and club for a day of fun and fellowship, we thank you for your continued support. As we head into January this year, the weather is a far cry from the snowfall of last winter. The course is still green and in just tremendous condition. As always, many thanks to our Director of Golf Course Operations, Chris Hankey and his staff for the job they do. Without a doubt, we enjoyed the best playing conditions around last year and can look to more of the same this year. On the heels of a very successful Social calendar last year, the Social committee has scheduled a nice variety of events planned each month. The 2019 calendar of events is listed in this months newsletter as well as on the club s website. As always, the club s website is the best place to find the most up to date information on all of our upcoming events. This month we kick off the fun with the inaugural First Friday social hour on January 4. Come out and enjoys drink specials, pizza and games. That will be followed up on the January 19 with our first Chili Cook-off. Come out and see what our local chefs have to offer! My thanks again and I am privileged to serve as your General Manager & Director of Golf. Happy New Year! Jim Mancill, PGA General Manager/Director of Golf
3 From the Course: Happy New Year everyone! It s hard to believe another year has passed, time really does fly. As we look back on 2018 it certainly was an eventful and historic year for the club. Although we experienced a rainfall deficit for most of the year, during November and December we received enough rain to make most of it up and end up almost normal for this year s total. As I have said before our course conditions depend heavily on rain, and as long as we get it, the course will thrive. One of the most important events of 2018 was the purchase of equipment for golf course maintenance. It has made a tremendous difference not only in the quality of cut, but also the speed in which we mow. Many of you have commented on the improvements, especially the cut in our roughs. My thanks to all the owners who made this possible. As we look forward to 2019 my staff and I are excited about the opportunity to further improve the course. A lot has been accomplished over the past 5 years, but we are not where we need to be yet. Are we closer than we were? Absolutely, but the challenge continues. Even with budget constraints we will strive to make improvements and provide the best possible conditions day I and day out. I can t say enough about the financial commitment that was made this year, and continues on. None of the success or improvements to the course would have been possible without it. My thanks to all of you for the positive comments and support we receive year after year. I wish all of you a Happy New Year and I look forward to another successful season in Chris Hankey Director of Golf Course Operations

8 Staying in Golf Shape Back by popular demand, the following golf stretching program was first run last January and will help you will not only increase your power and reduce the risk of injury, but it will also help you to maintain a more consistent swing pattern. The golf stretching program set out below is designed to be completed either on days you aren t playing or after a round. It is not a suitable program to use as a warm up and there is a good reason for that This stretching program consists of static stretching exercises. While this is the best type of stretching for increasing range of motion it can compromise power immediately afterwards. Just as lifting heavy weights just before a game would leave your muscles temporarily tired and weak (even though they adapt to become stronger over time), static stretching immediately prior to teeing off can also negatively effect your shot distance and swing mechanics. Guidelines You should be completely warm before starting this routine. Do 5-10 minutes of brisk walking or jogging on the spot to increase heart rate and pump blood to the major muscle groups. Perform the stretches in the order below. Hold each stretch for 20 seconds, relax and then repeat for another 20 seconds before moving on to the next stretch. The muscle group being stretched should feel slightly tight diminishing as you hold the stretch. Cease the stretch immediately if you feel any pain or if tightness increases as you stretch. Remember to breathe as this promotes relaxation and prevents an increase in blood pressure! Perform this routine a minimum of 3 days a week for 6 weeks. Start with some arm circles perhaps 10 clockwise and 10 counter-clockwise. Next do some twisting from side to side keep your feet shoulder width apart, place your hands on your hips or at chest height and turn from side to side times. These dynamic stretches just help to increase blood flow and loosen joints before moving onto the static stretches. Shoulder & Chest Stretch This can be performed kneeling or standing. Clasp hands behind back and straighten arms. Raise hands as high as possible and bend forward from the waist and hold. Shoulder Stretch Place one arm straight across chest. place hand on elbow and pull arm towards chest and hold. Repeat with other arm. Triceps Stretch Place one hand behind back with elbow in air. Place other hand on elbow and gently pull towards head. Hold and repeat with other arm.
9 Golf Stretching Program Chest Stretch (Wall) Place an outstretched arm against a wall or doorway and lean forward with that shoulder. You should feel a stretch in your chest when you lean forward. Hold and repeat for same arm then repeat 2 stretches for other arm. Hamstring Stretch Sit in upright position. Tuck foot near groin with opposite leg straight. Bending from the hips and leading with the chest, reach down until a stretch is felt in back of thigh. Remember to keep the low back straight to isolate stretch in hamstring Back Stretch Start by kneeling on the ground with your arms out in front of you. Slide your arms further away and slowly shift your hips back towards your feet until a comfortable stretch is felt. Now slide your hands to the right until a stretch is felt down the side of your torso. Repeat to the left. Quad Stretch Standing with a shoulder width stance and hang onto an object for support. Bring one foot up and grab with your hand. Pull your foot up until you feel a stretch on the front of your thigh. Hold, relax and repeat before changing legs. Low Back Stretch Lie on back with right knee drawn toward chest. Slowly bring bent leg across body until a stretch is felt in the lower back and hip area. Remember to keep shoulders squared and flat on ground at all times. Bottom leg should be bent so that your knees are aligned. Forearm/Wrist Stretch Stand with your right arm extended straight out. Pull back your fingers with the other hand until you feel a stretch in your forearm. Hold, repeat and then repeat 2 stretches on other arm. Butterfly Stretch Sit in upright position and place heels together. Spread knees apart and pull feet toward groin until a stretch is felt in groin and inner thigh. Remember to keep low back straight to emphasize stretch. These golf stretching exercise, performed regularly will help to promote relaxation in the muscles. This has the added benefit of also increasing body awareness, which is so important for maintain a consistent swing pattern. Additionally, the more a muscle group can relax, the more forcefully its opposing muscles group can contract. Coupled with a suitable strength training program these golf stretching exercises will help to increase you power with every club.
