Patrick Reed could hear the storm coming. All those roars Sunday at the Masters, they were like thunderbolts cracking all around him. I saw Jordan and Rickie storm up those leaderboards, Reed said. That would be Jordan Spieth and Rickie Fowler, whose bold Sunday charges tested more than Reed s shot making as he fought to hold them off and win his first major championship. Spieth came from nine shots back to briefly catch Reed, with Fowler nearly catching him coming from five shots back. I knew it was going to be a dogfight, Reed said. It s just a way of God basically saying, Let s see if you have it. Everyone knows you have it physically, with the talent, but do you have it mentally? Can you handle the ups and downs throughout the round? Reed s breakthrough victory in the majors is further evidence the golf gods are asking tougher questions than they ever have. Patrick Reed is just the latest. Another major champ under 30. Another first-timer. Among the youth, there are those who have won and those who soon will. Further evidence that today s players may be more explosive and more fearless than the game has ever seen. Further evidence that the sport is richer and deeper with young talent than it s ever been. Reed keeps an epic new run of young major championship winners going. He s the fourth different player age 27 or younger to win a major over the last four majors played. That s never happened before in the modern era. They re making it tougher to win multiple majors. Nine of the last 10 major championships have been won by first-time major winners. The last four Masters have been won by first-time major champions. This trend is emboldening Fowler and others who haven t won a major to believe they can follow Reed s footsteps at the U.S. Open at Shinnecock Hills New Crop PAGE 5 The Many Storytellers of Augusta National The PGA Tour will support regulated gambling on its competitions if the Supreme Court overturns a federal ban on betting. by REX HOGGARD HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. The PGA Tour will support regulated gambling on its competitions if the Supreme Court overturns a federal ban on betting. Earlier this season the Tour began an integrity program that players had to complete and has been working with a firm, Genius Sports, to monitor betting on tournaments and players. Over the last year and a half we worked on developing an integrity policy, said Andy Levinson, the PGA Tour s senior vice president of tournament administration. That policy was put in place to educate all of our constituents in the world of All In PAGE 5 by ERIK ANDERS LANG The stories of Augusta National come to us in several forms. The first is from those who attend the Masters. The second is from the course the sounds and the largess of this space speak volumes. And the third is from the people who inhabit the media center found just opposite the driving range. These journalists work day and night to bring you the Masters with words, images and voices. Golf Digest asked me to become one of them for a week. So as a former professional photographer I dusted off my right eye and squinted my way through the week to create a few images of the people and places that to me describe, in some small way, the many storytellers of Augusta National. Storytellers PAGE 6 The patrons might be the most powerful storyteller of all. They re constantly pausing and gazing, and the lucky ones remember that they can use the cameras hanging around their necks to document every specific moment. The patrons who tell the most compelling stories are lured to Augusta not by any specific golfer but by the tournament s most famous celebrity the course itself. The opportunity to spend a day roaming inside Augusta s gates makes the destination feel far more like interactive art than a golf course. GolfWeekRochester.com Golf Course Guide 2018

3 Rochester GOLF WEEK Friday, April 13, 2018 Page 3 Jordan Spieth Misses a Victory, but Gains Another Masters Memory Jordan Spieth bogeyed the 18th hole at Augusta National and finished in third, two shots back. (Lucy Nicholson/Reuters) by BILL PENNINGTON AUGUSTA, Ga. When Jordan Spieth s birdie putt on the 16th green dropped into the hole just after 5:40 p.m. on another stirring Masters Sunday, Spieth had made up the nine strokes that formed the gap between him and Patrick Reed at the beginning of the day. At that moment, any number of stunning outcomes were possible for Spieth over the next hour. The Augusta National course record was in reach. So was the record for the biggest final-round comeback in Masters history. And, oh yes, Spieth could have won his second Masters and his fourth major championship, all three months before his 25th birthday. But as the ball disappeared into the cup at No. 16 and the gallery erupted with an ovation that shook a sturdy grandstand, Spieth did not react. There was no celebration, not even a smile. At last, he turned to his caddie, Michael Greller, and said, Are you kidding me? Throughout a worldwide golf community that is drawn annually to the final two hours of the Masters tournament precisely because it produces examples of unmatched drama like Spieth s rousing charge, there must have been a lot of people with the same notion on their lips. Are you kidding me? And while Spieth did not set any records and he finished in third place, two strokes behind Reed, he nonetheless created another indelible Masters memory, something he has done in each of the last five Aprils as a perennial contender here. One takeaway from the 2018 Masters might be this: Golf fans might as well get used to Spieth as a dominant story line at Augusta National s famed competition for a green jacket. Since 2014, Spieth has always seemed to be the one to watch even when he has begun the day as an afterthought, as on Sunday. All eyes did not turn to him immediately. The attention was on the final-group pairing of Reed and Rory McIlroy, whose Masters aspirations fizzled yet again. But Spieth began his day with birdies on the first and second holes. Then he birdied the fifth, eighth and ninth holes, capping a torrid opening nine-hole score of five-under-par 31. Spieth was still four strokes behind Reed, who did not appear rattled. But perhaps because he is neither physically imposing nor long off the tee, Spieth attracts a fervent following in nearly every golf circle. And on Sunday, on the hills and hollows of Augusta National, the galleries began to relocate, quick-stepping so they could watch Spieth perform in Amen Corner. He came to the devilish par-3 12th hole, where he lost a late Masters lead in 2016 when he splashed two balls in the water, and shaped a steady tee shot close enough to knock in another birdie putt. I felt the crowd right then, Spieth said. I knew my history on that hole and they did, too. I started to think maybe something good was happening. But he refused to glance at any of the mammoth leaderboards on the golf course. I didn t care, Spieth said. Things were working the way I was doing it. I wasn t going to change anything. It s something of a superstition. He never looks at the scoreboard, said Justin Thomas, his longtime friend and his playing partner on Sunday. But I was watching. I knew I couldn t win so I was rooting for him. Two birdies followed on the 13th and 15th holes, both par 5s. Spieth sank a scary fourfoot downhill putt to secure the birdie on No. 15, and with a thunderous cheer filling his ears, he pumped his right fist five times as he walked off the green toward the 16th tee. Spieth was disappointed by the 16th tee shot, and with good reason. It stopped 33 feet below the hole. But the ensuing stroke appeared destined to find the hole the instant it left Spieth s putter, tumbling out of view and into the cup. Said Thomas: I had goose Come Experience bumps on my arms. The tie for the lead lasted only about 15 minutes, because Reed was not retreating. He regained a one-stroke lead. As Spieth approached the last hole, he needed a birdie or at least a par to keep the pressure on Reed. Spieth s final drive of the day just nicked a tree limb jutting into the narrow tunnellike opening off the 18th tee, and the ball ricocheted straight down, about 350 yards from the green. Not a real bad shot, just hit that little branch, Spieth said later. Spieth scrambled to give himself a makable par putt, but the round s magical air had an expiration date. In the last second of Spieth s round, his par putt drifted off the hole. Walking toward the clubhouse as the fans around the 18th green stood and applauded, Spieth finally spun his head back toward the scoreboard. I was feeling pretty gutted at the finish, Spieth said. I was disappointed by the last part. But truthfully, I began so far back. As it turned out, Reed did not flinch in his Masters crucible moment as he negotiated the final hole with a steely poise to seal a one-stroke victory over Rickie Fowler. Standing beside the Augusta National clubhouse here late Sunday evening, Spieth could see workers setting up chairs and a lectern for the ceremony that would end with Reed wearing the distinctive green jacket. Spieth had been the centerpiece of a similar celebration three years ago. In 2014, he had been a 20-year-old Masters rookie who completed the tournament in a tie for second. In two other years, he had finished second again and contended late into the final day before slipping into a tie for 11th. Looking across at the preparations for the green jacket presentation as the sun began to set Sunday, Spieth looked very comfortable. He smiled. Among the other places that Cohen served throughout his career was as Assistant General Manager at The Buffalo Club, which is a distinguished Platinum Club of America, as well as Brookfield Country Club in Clarence, NY. Most recently, Cohen worked for Kemper Sports Management, one of the largest golf management companies in the country, where he served as General Manager the past three seasons at Seneca Hickory Stick Golf Course in Lewiston, NY. (Facebook.com/Trevor.Sluman) As part of the RDGA Spring Meeting at Monroe Golf Club on Tuesday evening, Bryan Karns the 2019 Senior PGA Championship Director was invited to address the assembled Delegates from around the Rochester area. Karns, who originally hails from Oklahoma, heads a PGA of America staff that will oversee the day to day operations of next year s Senior PGA at Oak Hill Country Club, along with General Chairman Kevin Horey. As part of their duties, Karns and his staff, which includes Kenny Martin, Volunteer Operations Manager, have relocated to the Rochester area, where they will remain for the next year and a half as they help set up the tournament and work out the logistics of a major championship event. During his address to the RDGA Delegates on Tuesday, Karns made one rather unexpected announcement that voulunteer positions for the 2019 Senior PGA Championship have already been filled. Typically, when I address a local contingent of golfers and officials at a tournament site such as this I make a pitch to ask people to consider volunteering for the event, said Karns. But I come here tonight to announce that we have just filled our entire volunteer roster for next year s Championship. That is quite unusual for an event that is still a year away but speaks volumes to the type of golf community that is Rochester. The 2019 Kitchen Aid Senior PGA Championship is scheduled for May at Oak Hill Country Club ForeSight Junior Program Set to Tee Off May 12 In 2016, the RDGA Foundation Inc. and the Rochester District Golf Association in partnership with the Monroe County Parks Department announced its groundbreaking new junior golf program, ForeSight: an innovative pilot program designed to bring more young people to golf and grow the game in the Rochester area. In its first year, the ForeSight Program engaged more than 60 area junior golfers between the ages of 7 and 15. Last year, ForeSight increased that number to 100 young people. This year, the ambitious goal is to involve more than 150 young golf enthusiasts from around the Rochester area, by providing them with complimentary summer passes to the three Monroe County Parks Department-run golf courses and participating in the Program. Although most of the spots available for ForeSight consideration each year are filled through the screening of local High School physical education classes where golf is taught as part of the curriculum, some spots remain open due to the expansion of the program this year. Parents and students throughout the Rochester area who are looking to become more involved in golf particularly those juniors who have little or no experience in the game are invited to apply to the RDGA in order to be included in this year s ForeSight roster. Parents should contact the RDGA at for more information about how to apply. Opening Day for the 2018 ForeSight season is planned for Saturday, May 12 at Genesee Valley Golf Course, with all participants and their families invited. At this event, participants will receive their playing cards, as well as lessons on how to participate properly in the program, and at the game of golf. U.S. Kids Golf Opens Six Event 2019 U.S. Kids Golf a nationally-based organization promoting junior tournaments returns to the Rochester area for a 6-event U.S. Kids Golf Local Spring Tour, beginning this Sunday, April 15, at Ravenwood Golf Club in Victor. The 2018 U.S. Kids Golf Rochester Spring Tour is open to boys and girls, ages 5 to 14, providing opportunities to learn and play golf in age-appropriate competitions. Boys, ages 5 to 10 and Girls, ages 5 to 11, will play 9-holes each event, while Boys, 11 to 14 and Girls, 12 to 14, will play 18 holes each event The U.S. Kids Golf held its first Local Tour in the Rochester area last Fall, with another six-event schedule that included a Local Tour Championship also hosted by Ravenwood, which determined the final standings for all six events in the series. Registration for the remaining stops on the 2018 Local Spring Tour remains open throughout the schedule, which features events each Sunday for the next six weeks and includes stops at Eagle Vale Golf Club, Mill Creek Golf Club, Victor Hills Country Club, The Golf Club at Blue Heron Hills and the Tour Championship scheduled for May 20 at Sodus Bay Heights Golf Club. x FORESIGHT IN VIEW: This scene from last year s Opening Day of the ForeSight Junior Golf Program at Genesee Valley Golf Course will be repeated on Saturday, May 12, when the Program opens its third season, helping school-age golfers take up and play the game of golf throughout the season. 5 Rochester GOLF WEEK Friday, April 13, 2018 Page 5 New Crop (Continued from Page 1) in 10 weeks. I am ready to go win a major, Fowler said. But this was kind of the first major week that I understood that, and known that, and felt that. So I m ready to go. I m really looking forward to this year and the three majors that are left. Rory McIlroy, who was looking to complete the career Grand Slam, got run over by Reed in their pairing together. While McIlroy knows his golf history, he made a mistake trying to turn his major championship experience against Reed on Saturday evening, before Reed headed home to sleep on his first 54-hole lead in a major. I feel like all the pressure is on him, McIlroy said. He s got to go out and protect that, and he s got a few guys chasing him who are pretty big-time players. He s got that to deal with and sleep on tonight. McIlroy is sharp guy, but, boy, did that tactic backfire. McIlroy shot 74 and was pretty much irrelevant on the back nine. While Reed may have a feistier edge than most of today s young players, he could be the poster boy for the era s fearless style of play. He won t back down. He s a fighter. Reed reveled hearing so many prognosticators on Sunday morning pick McIlroy over him. It was like high-octane fuel for him. Spieth, 24, suggested after a don t increase the risk of corruption, Levinson said. By having some say in the types of bets that are offered we feel we can mitigate the risk that can be posed. Specifically, Levinson said the Tour would want to avoid bets that focus on a negative outcome, such as a player missing a fairway or a green or making a specific score. His name is etched in history. At week s start, Gary Player said he believed somebody in his 50s could win a major now, the way players today take such care of themselves. Actually, with so much talented youth hoisting trophies now, that feat could be more difficult than ever. At 47, Phil Mickelson was hoping to eclipse Jack Nicklaus as the oldest winner of the Masters. He arrived at Augusta National with momentum from a victory at the WGC-Mexico Championship last month, but he barely made the cut Friday. He left Sunday conceding that time is beginning to weigh on him on these major championship stages. He will turn 48 on Saturday of the U.S. Open at Shinnecock Hills, where he will be looking once again to complete the career Grand Slam. I put a little bit too much pressure on myself in the majors now, because I know that I don t have a ton of time to win them, especially U.S. Opens, Mickelson said. But these next two U.S. Opens, Shinnecock and Pebble Beach, give me two really good opportunities. So, I need to get my game sharp. Tiger Woods is still putting his game back together after so much time away with his back issues, but he must have left Augusta National knowing Reed makes it harder to win here in the future, that all these young first-time winners are making it harder for anyone to win. x Golf Channel PROTECT YOUR FAMILY! 6 Page 6 Rochester GOLF WEEK Friday, April 13, 2018 Storytellers (Continued from Page 1) Patrons who work their way to the front row will be rewarded with the most up-close view of world-class golf swings. Here, the awe is more personal rather than universal, and you can just hear them asking themselves, How do they do that? Augusta s size is immense, and it has the reverse effect of a rear view mirror: things are larger in reality than they appear. Overlooking the 11th green and the impressive pines that surround it, the golfers seem like micro soldiers, each making their own trudge some triumphant, most not through this intricate puzzle. Perhaps they, too, are trying to make sense of Augusta s enormous and bewildering scale. James Yang s witty, colorful illustrations force us to reimagine how we see the world. Here on assignment for Golf Digest to create illustrations for the 2019 Masters preview issue, Yang spends his days roaming the grounds with his sketchbook. His unique understanding of space is exactly why Golf Digest chose him to portray such a confounding landscape. The space seems larger in person than I imagined and the elevation cannot be caught in two dimensions. It s almost like a surreal world. Using the term interactive art to describe Augusta wasn t my idea, I borrowed that from Digest s Ashley Mayo, pictured here in the Media Center working over her breakfast, a common routine for her. Ashley has spent 11 years with Golf Digest and one of her duties at Augusta is to ensure that a maximum number of people see, read and consume the brand s content. Her unique view of the game and her insight into the new ways we absorb golf are particularly interesting. Read: the future of journalism is hard at work. And she loves her coffee. But perhaps there s one person at Augusta who isn t filled with awe. This is Dan Jenkins 68th consecutive year covering the Masters, which affords him special luxuries: a designated spot in the media parking lot, a prime seat in the media center, and palpable respect from every journalist in the building. He s been credentialed for all four of the tournament s media centers, and in this photo he stands in the current one, which is considerably fancier than any other. In his humorously dark perspective, he agrees this media center is perhaps nicer than we deserve. If the 10th hole could tell stories, it d attract the most captive audience. You see, the 10th hole kickstarts the second nine, which on Sunday is the make-or-break moment of the Masters, and while it s currently used as the second hole of every playoff, it used to be the first. Several green jackets have been won right here on this green. Its features are far more dramatic in person than any photo or televised coverage could convey. The 10th hole seems to have something in its soil that the other holes do not. Science doesn t support this, but history probably does. And finally, let s take a seat with Marty Hackel, the longtime fashion editor for Golf Digest who considers Masters week a sartorial Easter. He says it s the quintessential dress-up golf event of the year. Marty sits here at the epicenter of Augusta s social scene that unfolds under a giant oak tree just between the clubhouse and the first tee. This oak was planted in 1865 and it s hosted some of the most important conversations in golf s history. Sip your transfusion slowly here friends, as this may be a cocktail hour unlike any other. x GolfDigest.com Erik Anders Lang is the host of Adventures in Golf, and the Erik Lang Show, a new podcast. Golf Digest invited him to the Masters to share his first impressions of the tournament and Augusta National.

7 Rochester GOLF WEEK Friday, April 13, 2018 Page 7 Enough With 72-Hole Stroke-Play Events. Here Are 10 New Formats for Professional Golf to Ponder Who wouldn t watch an event where Cheyenne Woods could team up with her uncle, Tiger? (Francois Nel/Getty Images) The World Super 6 Perth event mixes a creative format (six-hole matches to decide the title) with an exotic Australian locale. (Paul Kane) by SHANE RYAN Last week in Australia, the PGA Tour of Australasia and Ladies European Tour jointly held the Vic Open. Judging from its coverage, you might not have heard much about it, but it was notable for its unusual format: men and women playing the same course at the same time in two concurrent tournaments, each with equal prize money. Ryan Hawkes won the men s event and Minjee Lee the women s. By most accounts, everyone seemed to love it. More importantly, it was a good idea! I m not going to go so far as to say that all the professional golf tours must introduce these types of novelties into their annual schedule the PGA Tour seems to be doing fine but it s always fun when they do. Who didn t enjoy the team format adopted at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans last year. Most would agree that it elevated the status of that tournament. And who doesn t love the Match Play when it rolls around the calendar? (Fine, there are a few, but they re wrong). And beyond the Super 6, the upcoming Belgian Knockout on the European Tour sounds like it s going to be extremely awesome. With these examples in mind, I have 10 ideas for the PGA Tour (or any major golfing body, really) to incorporate into their regular-season schedule. I have a long history of making helpful suggestions to the tour from the Olympics to the FedEx Cup playoffs. So far, the officials in Ponte Vedra Beach have not taken my advice even once. I have a sinking feeling that these ideas might also go unheeded, but the innovation train must chug on. A Partners Event Featuring PGA and LPGA Players This one is actually Cheyenne Woods idea, outlined after she played in the Vic Open: The experience got Woods thinking about the possibilities here in the U.S. with a certain famous uncle. You could do teams, you could do partners and I would pick (Tiger) as my partner, she said. I hope he would pick me! I think that would just be awesome. That would be amazing for all the right reasons, and also for some of the wrong ones: Watching the more uptight dudes get angry at their LPGA partners? It would be a solid sideshow. A Team Event Featuring Captain s Picks We re starting to see this in All-Star games the NBA does it now, and the Pro Bowl tried it for a while and it would be pretty spectacular in golf. The format could be pretty simple, where teams of eight compete in stroke play, or it could have match-play elements at tournament s end, akin to the Belgian Knockout. But the big novelty would be the captain s picks. This isn t like the Ryder Cup, where someone like Tom Watson picks a guy because he sent flattering text messages and then pretends it was because of his grit, or something. No, this would be public a group of the top players in the world would be designated as captains, and they d pick their teams at the start of the tournament on TV. The problem with this format for the players is that it would entail great public humiliation, especially for really strong players who get picked last because nobody likes them. But what great motivation! Wouldn t you want to see Patrick Reed in unquenchable anger mode, beating Rickie Fowler, 10 and 8, because he s upset at being picked 150th? Intra-American Regional Ryder Cup I want an America-only tournament where four different regions compete against each other in a Ryder Cup-style competition. I am from the northeast, and I know my region would get absolutely waxed by the southeast and southwest and probably the northwest, too, but I want to become the first diehard Team Northeast fan. I ll be featured on the local news at age 90 when they finally win one, just sobbing my eyes out, saying, I thought I d die without ever NOW OPEN! General CoSmetiC Preventive Personalized Patient Care Dr. Keith Sanger seeing them win! (This would be based on where each player was born, by the way, not by where they live, since they all live on the same street in Florida.) In reality, the regions would probably have to be: Southeast, Southwest (including Texas), California and THE NORTH. My team would have an entire half of the country, and we d still get slaughtered. I have very little faith in a team whose fu- New Formats PAGE 11 Driving Range Practice Green & Bunker Pro Shop Restaurant PGA Instruction 1025 Rush Scottsville Road, Rush SouthernMeadows.com LEAGUES NOW FORMING MENS / WOMENS / COUPLES / SENIORS A FEW CHOICE DATES AVAILABLE FOR TOURNAMENTS AND OUTINGS Plus Enjoy Some Great Food & Drinks at the Hospitality Pub & Grille! 10 Rochester GOLF WEEK Friday, April 13, 2018 Page 11 Golf Is Good for Health, Happiness & Local Authorities Golf is good for your health and happiness and could save millions of pounds for local authorities, according to new research. The findings are the result of an investigation by England Golf, Mytime Active and ukactive into the impact of playing golf on health and wellbeing. Over 3200 golfers at 12 Mytime Active courses were surveyed about their participation. The results suggest the sport is attracting significant numbers of people who haven t been getting enough exercise and, once they get into golf, they re likely to keep playing and improving their fitness. The more they play the happier they ll be, with the golfers who took most activity scoring well above the national average for their mental wellbeing. As a result, it is estimated that golf is saving local authorities in the survey area a total of 3.4m a year in health costs. There are even bigger potential savings if the golfers who play the least continue their participation and become more active. The findings will be used to investigate the possibility of making golf available on referral by GPs. It will also help to find other ways to encourage inactive golfers to play more and to generally promote the health benefits of the game. Abbie Lench, England Golf Head of Club Support, commented: It s fantastic to be able to show that golf is both good for you and could save the country considerable sums of money. Golf clubs and ranges have a really important role to play in helping people become fitter and happier and we look forward to developing this. Steven Ward, CEO of ukactive, said: Golf is another great way to stay physically active while enjoying sport. This research provides further evidence that simply by undertaking regular moderate intensity exercise, such as brisk walking during a game of golf, you can improve your overall health and happiness. Jason Stanton, Operations Director at Mytime Active added: At Mytime Active we are committed to improving community wellbeing and it s great to work with England Golf and ukactive to prove the health and social benefits of golf. All our golf clubs are open to everyone and we look forward to showcasing the wider benefits of golf through future projects in the near future. The research highlights the appeal of golf to people who do not undertake at least 150 minutes of exercise each week, as recommended in the Chief Medical Officer s (CMO) guidelines. More than 70 percent of the people surveyed were in this category. The research also shows that golfers are likely to stick at the sport. More than 70 percent were positive that they would play golf regularly during the next year. However, the evidence showed that some people don t count golf as exercise, highlighting the need to promote this aspect of the sport. A large number of golfers (78 percent) are satisfied with their lives and the survey finds their mental wellbeing increases very noticeably, the more they play. The most active golfers scored an average 8.35 out of 10, when assessing how satisfied they were with their lives; the score fell to 7.12 for inactive golfers. Golfers also show higher levels of social trust than the general UK population; increasing the levels of trust between people is seen as essential to strong communities and economic growth. Over half of the golfers surveyed gave a high score to this question (7 or more out of 10), and again, those who played more, scored it highest. x GolfToday.co.uk New Formats Jonas Blixt and Cameron Smith were the first duo to win the Zurich Classic after it changed to a two-man team event. (Chris Graythen/Getty Images) (Continued from Page 7) ture depends on the success of Vermont native son Keegan Bradley. Last Man Standing Elimination Playoff Tournament Here s how I see this going: First three days are basically normal, and half the field gets cut after Saturday. After that, you divide the remaining 80 players into 16 groups of five. Those groups of five players start out together on the first hole on Sunday morning, and play a sudden-death playoff until only one remains from the group. The 16 playoff winners are then sorted into four groups of four, and they do it again. That will leave four golfers, and those four go head-to-head in the very last playoff group, with the winner taking top prize. You may have to read that last paragraph a few times to understand it, and even then it may still sound crazy. But I think it would make for extremely compelling, extremely chaotic, and extremely weird Sunday. I would not miss it. The beauty of it is that each group could end on the first hole when someone birdies or eagles, or could extend indefinitely. You could theoretically win on Sunday by playing just three holes. The Random Bag Tournament Each player in the field is randomly assigned a bag of clubs from another player each day. The winner of the tournament will have played with four different bags that are not his own, and could be safely judged the most versatile, able golfer of them all. A few predictions for how this would work out: First, Dustin Johnson would win, because he is very talented but seems like he may not notice that he was playing with different clubs. Second, Bryson DeChambeau would nearly go insane. Third, the players forced to play with Bryson DeChambeau s clubs would actually go insane. Fourth, Pat Perez would break somebody else s clubs in a fit of anger. A Miniature Golf Tournament The Major Series of Putting seemed to resonate with many people late last year. If you forced them to take a miniature golf tournament seriously with a real cut and the same prize money as a normal event, this would be great. I want to see Bubba Watson rant to Ted Scott about the unfairness of the windmill hole. A Four-Club Event You get a putter, one wedge, one iron, and one wood. Plan well, and good luck to you. An Old-Club Event Everyone has to use the same persimmon niblicks and mashies and brassies, or whatever. This would obviously have to take place in Scotland, and for added historical accuracy, mounted English knights could randomly chase certain players around the course. A Scores Reset Tournament You cut 40 golfers every day, but after the cut, scores go back to even. It would put a premium on both consistency and pressure play, since you can t have a single off day, but you also need to step up on Sunday when everyone is starting from the same place. I get the sense that if golf worked this way all the time, Rory McIlroy would either have won twice as many tournaments, or half as many, since his Friday/Saturday 78s would eliminate him before he could turn in the Sunday 64. The Distractions Welcome Tournament Every single hole is like the 16th at TPC Scottsdale. You can t touch the player, or otherwise impede his swing, but everything else is fair game. Every single player who could feasibly skip this tournament would do so, but for the players who need status, it would be a necessary stop. I ve seen firsthand how shaken players are after coming off the 16th hole at the Waste Management, so this might actually induce real, lasting trauma. Especially if the tournament was held in Philadelphia people are legitimately crazy there. But hey, Mr. 150th place on the points list, if you want to keep your card, you re going to have to deal with the guy in a hot-dog costume who somehow has a picture of your wife on a placard and is taunting you by shouting the name of your middle-school bully. (You really can find anything on Google, can t you?) OK, so, look: A lot of these ideas are outlandish. And I m not necessarily sure if any of them are feasible, even the notas-stupid ones. But if the stock market crashes, and the tour is desperate, they re here on the trash heap of ideas, waiting for the moment when there s no choice but to shake things up in professional golf. x GolfDigest.com I think I should say something, but I m afraid. How afraid do you think the children are? Suspect child sexual abuse? If you think something s wrong, do something right. Trust your gut. Make the call, even if you re not sure. We can help you figure out what, if anything, needs to be done. (585) BeBrave@BivonaCAC.org Space donated to Causewave Community Partners as a public service of this publication.

11 Page 12 Rochester GOLF WEEK Friday, April 13, 2018 GOLF opinion & comment Did Golf Channel Inadvertently Motivate Patrick Reed to Win the Masters? by CHRISTOPHER POWERS From the moment Patrick Reed declared himself a top five player in the world after his victory at Doral in 2014 (and likely before that, too), it s been Reed vs. The World. He s certainly played that up during his Ryder Cup and Presidents Cup appearances as well, embracing the villain role by finger-wagging and shushing his way to an record in team events. This mentality was never more evident than on Sunday at the Masters. As roars bounced off the towering pines of Augusta National from seemingly every direction, Reed barely received what would literally be described as golf claps with every big shot and made putt. It s not that the patrons were actively rooting against Reed, it s just simply that they wanted someone else to win. Go back and look and listen to the crowd during Jordan Spieth s bid for a 63 at the 72nd hole, or when Rickie Fowler converted on his birdie putt on the same green to get within one of Reed s lead. On both occasions, the place exploded, in a good way for Fowler and a bad way for Spieth, as if the crowd was willing one of the two young American stars to victory. As for Captain America himself, he got scraps. Like he does with everything, there s no doubt Reed used this as motivation, and if he didn t have enough to be motivated about as he prepared for his tee time Sunday morning, Golf Channel may have stoked the Reed flame that much more (J.D. Cuban) during the pre-tournament show. Here s what Reed had to say about some of the predictions that were made while he was watching TV: You know, listening to all the analysts this morning as I was watching the golf and every single one of them picked Rory except me, besides for Notah (Begay III), thanks Notah, appreciate it, you re my boy. It s just kind of one of those things, it just seemed like the pressure at that point was kind of lifted off. I mean, no one expects me to go out and win, I expect myself to go out and win, my family and I believe that I can win the golf tournament. Just seemed like every one else was saying how great I was playing all week, how very impressed they were, but then come Saturday night and Sunday morning they re like oh well uh, even though we said all these great things about how he s playing, we think Rory s going to win. Going into that it just felt like that takes a little bit of that pressure off of me because I can just go out and try and play golf. And that kind of fit into the motto that I was trying to do all week was to go out and just play golf, and it was definitely harder to do that than I thought. To be clear, Reed never specifically calls out Golf Channel, but unless Notah has a side job no one knows about, Reed was obviously watching Golf Central like the rest of us. Plus, Brandel Chamblee referred to Reed s quote in the Live From show following the final round, and pondered about whether he and his fellow analysts had a hand in Reed s victory. So, we basically learned what we already knew about Reed, that he has arguably the most self-belief of anybody on the PGA Tour, and that he s got the game to win major championships. And no matter how much he accomplishes, it s still Reed vs. The World. x GolfDigest.com The19th Hole... News, Notes & Quotes From the World of Golf They Said It: Best Quotes from Sunday at the Masters Of course it s frustrating. But it s hard to take any positives from it right now, but at least I put myself in the position. That s all I wanted to do. The last four years I ve had top 10s, but I haven t been close enough to the lead. Today I got myself there. I didn t quite do enough. But, you know, come back again next year and try. Rory McIlroy (T-5) I gave it my all. I left everything out there on the golf course. Like I was talking about, I was just a little too far back. And to go out there and leave everything out there, it would have been nice to have a few more coming in and give it a real chance. But we did everything we could. Rickie Fowler (second) The first time I saw the leaderboard was after I tapped in on 18. Honest to God. Didn t look once today. That was my plan going in. I m nine back. Go out and just have fun. Don t worry about the golf tournament itself, worry about playing Augusta National. I heard roars. I knew somebody was playing well. With eight people ahead of me starting the day, to get that much help and shoot a fantastic round was nearly impossible. But I almost pulled off the impossible. Jordan Spieth (third) It was nice to finish off like that and make it a top 10 and get me back here next year. But, yeah, not the day that I wwas after. Marc Leishman (ninth) There weren t many downs. The only down I would say is the second shot on 15. You know, it s sad, it s sad too, because I played so good the last three days and that one shot, one shot where I feel like I made a perfect swing and wound up in the water I wish I would have made a couple more putts, but it is what it is, it s hard to win a major championship. Jon Rahm (fourth) My swing is slightly off. I was pleased with the way I was able to drive it, but I just could not convert with my irons. I struggled with obviously controlling the shape. Can t control the shape. Can t control the distance. And it was one of those weeks in that regard. Tiger Woods (T-32) Every time you think about it as a kid growing up, it s always, you know, this putt is to win a green jacket; this putt s to win the Masters. I think that s just because of the history and everything that s gone on here at Augusta National and how special it is to all the golfers and special it is to just golf in general around the world. Patrick Reed It was better but it s never easy to be out here knowing what you re missing out on with that back nine here Sunday at the Masters and not having a chance, it s difficult because you know what you re missing out on and you know what special things happen on that back nine, how fun it is to be a part of it, be in the mix. Phil Mickelson (T-36) I played well this week, just putter let me down. I played well enough to have a great chance to win the tournament, I just didn t make any putts. And any time I kind of got some momentum I did something to crush it. Justin Thomas (T-17) Obviously there s a lot of good scores today, we had the roars back that we always talk about Sunday afternoon. The wind was down so people were scoring pretty good. For me, I made a couple mistakes, silly mistakes. I think the back nine, the last few holes, I got it under par, I got it in the 60s, so it was a nice finish. But obviously I needed that start like Jordan had. Bubba Watson (T-5) I m here on Sunday at the Masters and just the opportunity to be here alone was good enough and to be able to make the cut and have the honors of winning the low amateur trophy this week, I was just trying to make sure that I appreciate the moment and then don t let my emotions get in the way. Doug Ghim (T-50) That was fun, wasn t it? Birdie, birdie, eagle on Amen Corner, I m going to remember that for a long time. Paul Casey (T-15) It was a good week, but I wouldn t say it anything better than good. I hit it a little, a lot of great shots, putts didn t fall, way too many three putts, and just some missed opportunities. But I certainly, I grinded it out, I stayed in every round, and I had a chance to do some great things. Adam Hadwin (T-24) It s a hole that you know that you can make an ace on, but most people don t pull it and bounce it off the top of the bunker and come in from the left hand side. It wasn t the perfect shot I was looking for, but somehow it just carried the bunker and took a right and went in the hole. I mean it s a great experience and a great feeling and it s something you re thinking on that hole but not the way I did it. Charley Hoffman (T-12) Golf Channel

NBC Sports Group is teaming up with PGA TOUR superstar Rickie Fowler to give viewers a dramatic behind-the-scenes look into Fowler s alma mater in a four-part documentary series Driven: Oklahoma State Cowboys. NBC Sports will showcase Driven across its networks: with the first three premieres airing on Golf Channel (Mondays: May 7, 14, and 21), encores airing on NBCSN, and the finale on NBC, Saturday, June 16, recapping their historic season culminated by their run at a potential 11th national championship for the program. The announcement was made today by Fowler, executive producer of Driven and his Main Event Productions, and Mike McCarley, president, Golf, NBC Sports Group. As a proud Oklahoma State alum, Driven is a passion project of mine. I consider Stillwater my home away from home and I am excited to not only showcase my alma mater, but also provide fans with the unique insider perspective of what college golf represents, said Rickie Fowler, executive producer, Main Event Productions. With the Cowboys embarking on a record-setting year, our arch-rival Oklahoma Sooners as the reigning national champions and the NCAA National Championships being staged at OSU s home course at Karsten Creek, we couldn t have picked a better year to shine a spotlight on this storied rivalry and the unique team drama that fuels not only my beloved Cowboys, but also the tremendous stage of collegiate golf. Embedded for the duration of the season, Driven: Oklahoma State Cowboys will showcase the personal and competitive journey of the Oklahoma State men s golf team, which is currently the unanimous No. 1 ranked team in the nation and riding a historic seven-tournament winning streak. This May, Oklahoma State also will be host of the NCAA Men s and Women s Golf National Championships at their home course, Karsten Creek Golf Club in Stillwater, Okla. Adding to the drama, the Oklahoma Sooners, in addition to being the Cowboys in-state rival just 80 miles away in Norman, Okla., are the reigning NCAA National Champions and participated in the production of Driven. The rivalry and traditions of college sports are unmatched, and those same passions run deep in college golf. Rickie is a leader on the PGA TOUR in many ways, and his signature Sunday orange coupled with Pistol Pete proudly displayed on his bag embody the passion he exudes for his Cowboys, said Mike McCarley, president, Golf, NBC Sports Group. Rickie absolutely is the right partner for us to join forces with as we shine a spotlight and further elevate college golf, especially leading up to Golf Channel s comprehensive coverage of the NCAA national championships this May. Driven will span Oklahoma State s college golf season both on and off the golf course. Experiencing one of its best years in program history with eight victories in nine events this year, the team s current run includes seven victories in a row, tying OSU s single-season record by matching the team. Oklahoma State men s golf program has won 10 NCAA golf national championships, and boasts more than 10 current players on the PGA TOUR, including Rickie Fowler, Morgan Hoffman, Charles Howell III, Hunter Mahan, Alex Noren and Peter Uihlein. Heading into the season, OSU was the preseason top-ranked team in the country with one goal in mind: to capture their 11th NCAA National Championship. It s a credit to the history of the Oklahoma State golf program that Golf Channel chose to feature our team and this exciting season in their new series Driven, said Alan Bratton, Oklahoma State men s golf head coach. We hope we make former coach Labron Harris, Athletic Director Mike Holder, all our former players and our supporters proud of how we represent them on and off the course through this series. Driven is written and produced by Ollie Stokes, a 20-time Emmy Award winner. Stokes has dozens of Emmy nominations, including Showtime s ALL ACCESS: Mayweather vs. McGregor, which he wrote and produced as part of the Emmy-nominated team. Oklahoma State s historic win streak as they look to dethrone their top rival Oklahoma has been playing out like a true Field of Dreams story as the Cowboys seek their 11th national championship at their home course this May, said Stokes. Driven showcases that same inherent passion Rickie has for his college, but what makes this show unique is we ve captured that drama within the setting of golf, an often overlooked and underappreciated aspect of both college sports and the game of golf. One of Oklahoma State s most-decorated players as the nation s former top-ranked amateur, Fowler was the first freshman in NCAA history to win the Ben Hogan award as the NCAA s top men s golfer in Fowler, who turned professional in 2009, has recorded eight international wins in his career, including four PGA TOUR victories and the 2015 PLAYERS Championship, as well as contributing to winning Ryder Cup and Presidents Cup teams and representing Team USA in the 2016 Golf Business PAGE 14 Play Better Golf With Jack Nicklaus April 13, 2018 R O C H E S T E R Vol. 30, No. 17 Official Newspaper of the Rochester District Golf Association BARBARA MORGENSTERN, Publisher & Editor Published weekly since 1989 by Rochester Golf Week 2535 Brighton-Henrietta Town Line Rd., Rochester, NY Phone: (585) info@golfweekrochester.com Website: Deadline for all copy is Monday at noon, four days in advance of publication date. 13 Page 14 Rochester GOLF WEEK Friday, April 13, 2018 The RBC Heritage is Possibly the Most Underheralded Tournament on the PGA Tour by JEFF VRABEL For many people, the RBC Heritage is the official name for That Tournament After the Masters, the one with fewer big names, 100% less Tiger and more expensive drink prices. (To be fair, after you ve spent 95 minutes traveling there, $12 Bud Lights don t look so bad). For those of us who lived on Hilton Head Island, this is dumb and wrong and also dumb! Now in its 50thyear, the RBC (it s a Canadian bank, we guess) Heritage beautifully fills the post-masters space with a laid-back weekend in lush Hilton Head, a near-perfect destination for people trying to flee a DEATHLESS WINTER THAT WON T STOP. If this sounds like you, read on. What s the Vibe That Weekend? The Heritage is easily Hilton Head s biggest deal of the year, unless an imposing 12-foot alligator emerges from the ocean and heads toward a crowded beach, which happens sometimes. But the Heritage scene is less Furious Golf Combat and more Grown Person Spring Break, everyone hanging around Harbour Town in the sweet April sun sipping Arnold Palmers and mint juleps and flinging their parasols about while blessing various people s hearts. It s held in Sea Pines Plantation, which is defined by masterful natural development and accessible by precisely two (2) languid security gates. If you are going to the Heritage this year, you are already late. Who Attends? Being so close to the Masters, the Heritage still falls more in the optional category, but Dustin Johnson is signed on, as are Paul Casey, Matt Kuchar and Webb Simpson. As for the competition, the sports-bet droids who inexplicably called Patrick Reed report that Kevin Kisner has a pretty good shot at winning this year s tartan jacket. (It s just plaid Harbour Town likes to sound Scottish.) What is Harbour Town Like? Imagine a quiet, laid-back harbor from your Margaritaville dreams, a place of natives drinking from coconuts and strumming guitars made out of palm fronds, then push half that out of your mind and add $12 billion and boats large enough for their gravitational fields slow the actual passage of time. Harbour Town is an actual harbor but if its contents are boats then I m Dionne Warwick; these are behemoth warships that are worth more than your children, could probably land private planes and would have been real handy at Dunkirk. Elsewhere in Harbour Town, cover bands play top rock hits under a majestic, backlit Liberty Oak, drinks flow easy and the guys came out in their best Easter-egg-colored getups. One year, I saw a stunning combination of cigar + popped collar + aviator shades + pink sweater, which was like 200 points. How Do I Get There? Fly into Savannah/Hilton Head airport, take I-95 north, get off on 278 and take the scenic 15-mile-per-hour drive to Hilton Head. Once there, you ll run into a lot of traffic circles. Follow long-established tourist custom by driving into one, orbiting it helplessly for four minutes, then, without warning, slamming on the gas and attempting to exit through a packed minivan. You Were Kidding About The Alligators, Right? HAHAHAHAHA no, alligators are real. Here is my half of every conversation I had with a tourist about alligators in 10 years of living on Hilton Head: 1. Yes, I see it. 2. No, he ll just stay there and sun himself. 3. No, you don t feed them. 4. No, we re not feeding them, they re not koalas. 5. For f**k s sake, we re leaving, put the chicken fingers down. 6. No, running in zig-zag fashion doesn t work, and will only make you look like a goon in the last moments before you re GOLF business eaten by an alligator. But They Won t Bother Me, Right? Sure. Whatever you say. Why is it So Dark Everywhere? Hilton Head has no streetlights! Planners long ago decided to outlaw them, to preserve the island s natural beauty and maximize the number of Ohio residents driving around at 14 mph in search of signage. (Planners long ago were hilarious.) More importantly, it keeps it pretty, and lets all the snakes slither around in peace. What are these Tiny Bugs Biting Me All the Time, And Why Don t they Die? Those are called no-see-ums, and no one can kill them! Their bite is monstrous, they re resistant to bug spray/flamethrowers and they spend most of their time figuring out ways to fly into your mouth in groups of 50 when you re out running.nosee-ums are the worst animals in town, and let me remind you, this town contains alligators. (Given the choice between one lousy gator bite and being attacked by no-see-ums, I mean, I can learn to type with my left hand.) But Those are the Only Bugs, Right? YES! Well, except for Palmetto Bugs. Islanders call them Palmetto Bugs because it sounds cute, and because Four-Inch- Long Mutant Armor-Plated Cockroaches That Can Fly takes too long to type. They re everywhere, but unlike no-see-ums, they can be killed. That said, when you squish them, they create a three-foot blast radius. Wear plastic. What Else Do You Do There? 14 Rochester GOLF WEEK Friday, April 13, 2018 Page Things You Need to Know About Patrick Reed (Walter Iooss Jr.) Reed with his wife/caddie, Justine. (Streeter Lecka/Getty Images) (Scott Halleran/Getty Images) (Photo courtesy of Bill Reed) by STEPHEN HENNESSEY Patrick Reed s victory at the 2018 Masters etched him into golf s history books. But how familiar are you with the year s first major champion? If you re a golf fan, you likely knew Reed for his finger-wagging and hushing at past Ryder Cups, his gun-slinging style of golf, which hadn t yet resulted in any major championships but made the 27-year-old stand out for his brashness in a sport that seems to lack those personality types. Here are a few other things you need to know about Reed: His wife, Justine, used to caddie for him including in his first win on the PGA Tour, when he outdueled Jordan Spieth at the 2013 Wyndham Championship. When Justine became pregnant with the couple s first child, Windsor Wells, Justine s brother, Kessler Karain, took over. He remains Reed s currently caddie including who he won with at Augusta National. Yes, he famously or was it infamously declared himself a top-five player in the world after winning a WGC at Doral in The win was Reed s third victory in seven months. The 23-year-old received some backlash at the time considering he hadn t yet played in a major championship. Reed s father, Bill, gave his son a set of plastic clubs when Reed was born. By age 9, the Reeds would drive to Hank Haney s ranch in McKinney, Texas, to practice all day. As Reed told our Guy Yocom in 2016: I d get there at 7:30 in the morning on snowy days, turn on the heater and hit until noon. I d go inside, eat a cheeseburger, then resume hitting until dark. You know those huge pails of balls the size of laundry baskets? I d go through four of those a day. I d get these world-class blisters on the fourth finger of both hands. I went through a lot of pain. I felt like I was paying a price. I don t think you can hit as many balls as I did without getting to be pretty good. Patrick s coach at Haney s facility, Peter Murphy, showed Reed videos of Haney teaching Tiger. Tiger s determination not only inspired Reed to get better, but Reed starting wearing red and black, like Tiger does on Sundays, out of respect. Before his Sunday singles duel at the 2016 Ryder Cup against Rory McIlroy, USA vice captain Tiger Woods noticed Reed was a little off on the range. He had his own way to loosen him up. Hey, Patrick, Tiger said, according to John Feinstein in his book Inside the Ryder Cup. Come here a minute. I thought sure he was going to give me a pep talk, say something about my swing or about just relaxing and not trying too hard, Reed told Feinstein. I walked over there. He had his arms folded. I waited. He looked really serious. And then he told me a dirty joke. It was actually the perfect thing to do, Reed told Feinstein. It just broke the tension. I MONROE rochester BuFFALo syracuse elmira went back to hitting balls, and all of a sudden I was loose as could be. I was ready. 15 Page 16 Rochester GOLF WEEK Friday, April 13, 2018 Masters 2018: Augusta National by the Numbers The 2018 Masters is officially in the books, and Patrick Reed is the newest green jacket recipient. As Reed settles in to life in the champions locker room, take a look back at some of the course stats from this week at Augusta National Golf Club and see where players had scoring opportunities and where they simply tried to salvage par: The second nine played marginally easier than the first nine, yielding an average score of over par. The first-nine scoring average for the week was over par. Last year the four par-5s (Nos. 2, 8, 13 and 15) were the only holes to play under par Take an inside look at some of the scoring trends this week at Augusta National, where Patrick Reed slipped into his first green jacket. for the week. This year they were joined by No. 3, a 350- yard par 4 that played to an average of and never yielded worse than a bogey. The most difficult hole for the week was No. 11, which saw more doubles or worse (21) than birdies (13). The only player to birdie No. 11 during the third round was non-competing marker Jeff Knox. The easiest hole for the second straight year was No. 13, which played under par for the week. There were 128 birdies on Azalea this week to go along with more eagles (nine) than double bogeys (seven). There were 28 eagles during the week, including nine on No. 13 and seven on No. 15. There were three outside the par-5s: Webb Simpson s holeout on No. 7, amateur Doug Ghim s eagle on No. 18 and Charley Hoffman s ace on No. 16. There were 11 dreaded others, or scores of triple bogey or worse: one each on Nos. 1, 4, 6, 7, 9 and 11 to go with two on No. 10 and three on No. 15, including Sergio Garcia s octuple-bogey 13 in the opening round. The hole that played closest to par for the week was No. 16, which played to a average and saw one eagle and 50 birdies against 46 bogeys and seven doubles. The most difficult hole on the first nine was No. 4 (+0.318) while the easiest hole on the first nine was No. 8 (-0.282). x Golf Channel 17 Things (Continued from Page 15) What happened at the eighth hole helped ensure the match was an instant classic. The two gave each other a smile and a fist pump as they went onto the next hole. The duo matched birdies the entire time in one of the most emotional displays of an emotional match. Beyond his choice of Sunday attire, Reed is extremely superstitious. He told Golf Digest in a My Shot with Guy Yocom: I ve only played balls with the number 3. I always have exactly 12 balls in my bag. I mark my ball tails-side up with a 1927 quarter. I carry exactly six tees in my pocket, and if I start breaking them, I have to get down to zero tees before I reload a fresh six. Reed currently works with Kevin Kirk, a pro from The Woodlands Country Club outside Houston, near the Reeds home. Among the things Kirk and Reed have worked on are getting Reed s tempo and rhythm right in his driver swing. Reed s swing was never more in sync than at Augusta National where his helicopter finish was on display throughout the week. When Reed was 10, he stopped wearing shorts in tournaments after he realized pros never wore shorts in tournaments. According to Shane Ryan s book Chasing the Tiger, Ryan says Reed would wear khaki pants even in the heart of summer in Texas. After starting college at the University of Georgia, Reed transferred to Augusta University (then Augusta State), where he helped his new school win two NCAA golf championships. The Jaguars beat a strong Oklahoma State team that featured top amateurs Peter Uihlein, Morgan Hoffmann and Kevin Tway in 2010, and defeated Reed s former school, Georgia, in the 2011 finals for back-to-back NCAA titles. Reed s college experience was rocky at times. Reed left Georgia as a freshman for undisclosed reasons. Published reports allege Reed broke rules during qualifying rounds as well as took items from teammates lockers (both of which Reed denies). At Augusta State, his teammates were also reportedly standoffish with Reed. While going 6-0 in match play in the 2010 and 2011 NCAA Championships, Reed left to turn pro at the end of his junior year. Reed s relationship with his parents is also complicated. Neither his mother, Jeannette, or father were invited to Reed s wedding in December 2012 and the family, including Reed s sister, Hannah, hasn t spoken to Patrick in several years. The family watched Reed win the Masters from their home in Augusta, Ga., just miles away from Augusta National. He won the Masters with a pair of wedges from a new equipment company, Artisan Golf. Reed doesn t have an deal with a main club company, and his bag shows the freedom he has to play any and all equipment. At the Masters, he used a Ping G400 LST driver, which he favors for its low-spin qualities, an old Nike fairway wood, an Odyssey putter and wedges from this new brand started by former Nike club makers. Reed s yardage book is so American. Captain America, as Reed has been dubbed, carries a number of USA-themed gear with him including his yardage book, 2016 Ryder Cup umbrella. He s even been known to wear his past USA team uniform outside of the Ryder Cup. A 2031 AJGA bag tag hangs on Reed s golf bag. Reed kept his own AJGA bag tag on his bag as he first came on tour. He now has one for his And with birth of his second child, Barrett Benjamin Reed, in December 2017, he s added a second tag. You ll often spot Reed on the range with earbuds, listening to the same song on repeat: Radioactive by Imagine Dragons. He told me in 2013: It s the perfect tempo to swing to and it pumps me up. The song even made Nick Faldo s call on the 72nd hole on Sunday... Faldo said: Welcome to the new age, the new age. Like most golfers, Reed has thought often about winning the Masters. And he lets his mind wander in his practice. I dream very little when I m sleeping and a ton when I m awake, Reed told Golf Digest in I still do the practice-green thing of having a putt to win the Masters, the announcers whispering in the background in their dramatic way, a huge gallery there, the whole thing. I ve never missed one of those putts, mainly because I make sure it s a two-footer, so winning is a bygone conclusion. Positive reinforcement, you know. x GolfDigest.com

17 Page B2 EXPOSITOR-LEDGER April 2018 Home Remodeling Trends That Boost Your Home s Value (BPT) A strong housing market is giving homeowners the confidence to invest in remodeling. In fact, homeowner spending on improvements and repairs will approach $340 billion in 2018, an increase of 7.5 percent from estimated 2017 spending, according to the Leading Indicator of Remodeling Activity (LIRA) from the Joint Center for Housing Studies of Harvard University. Remodeling can add value to your home while also making it more livable, but not all remodeling projects are created equal. While the choice to remodel is individual, there are many studies that show some projects return more on your investment than others. Fortunately, some of 2018 s leading remodeling trends also have great ROI. H A heating and cooling system is one of the most expensive investments a homeowner can make. It makes sense, then, to carefully select a contractor who will help you find the right system for your home, install it, and provide the technical assistance needed to keep it running efficiently. To help with that selection process, here are some tips from the experts at the Coleman Heating and Air Conditioning brand of Johnson Controls: Learn as much as you can about heating, ventilating and air-conditioning (HVAC) systems. The more you know, the better prepared you will be to conduct interviews with potential contractors. Ask family, friends, co-workers, real estate agents and home improvement specialists for recommendations. Visit the Better Business Bureau website to check the consumer ratings of a contractor. This site also shows the volume of complaints lodged against a contractor. Check for membership in professional organizations. Find out if the contractor and the technicians in his/her company are certified by North American Technician Excellence (NATE). Ask to see state and local licenses and certifications for refrigerant handling. Verify that the contractor is properly insured. Ask to see proof of liability and workers compensation insurance for the contractor, as well as any technicians and subcontractors the contractor employs. Ask if the contractor performs the work or has a subcontractor do it. Consider the contractor s length of service. Does he/ she have an established track record? Ask for a list of references that you can contact. Check these references, ask about performance and whether work was completed on time and within budget. Do the contractor s services include scheduled maintenance, repairs and 24-hour service? Expect the contractor to conduct an on-site inspection, ask questions about your home comfort needs, and address any questions you might have before making recommendations regarding service or equipment. After this occurs, he or she should present you with an itemized and written estimate for proposed work and a final contract that requires your signature before work can begin. Begin looking for a contractor well in advance of a project. This will allow plenty of time to conduct a thorough search. That way, you can be confident that the contractor you choose will possess the expertise and integrity to meet your comfort needs professionally and affordably. 19 Page 4B B4 EXPOSITOR-LEDGER April Month 2018 Year Home Easy Steps to Get Your Lawn Ready for Spring (BPT) After a long, cold winter, you re certainly ready for summer. But is your lawn? The snow and bitter temps may have wreaked havoc on your yard, but now that warmer weather has arrived, it s time to tackle those small projects that can add up to a beautiful lawn. Here are five tips you can use to make your lawn and yard everything it can be this season. Reseed bare patches in your lawn. A fabulous lawn is one devoid of bald spots, so make this project a first priority. Loosen the soil in bare areas 2-4 inches before flattening it with a garden rake. Once the soil has been loosened, apply fertilizer and grass seed to the area. Flatten the surface down once more and apply water to help your new grass grow. Find the right mower for your lawn. Your mower is your yard s most important tool. If you re in the market for a new mower, don t settle for an average, run-of-the-mill model. Look for a pro-grade mower with a powerful engine like the KOHLER 7000 Series Engine. A commercial-grade engine will have you mowing like a real pro and offers a variety of perks, including turnkey starting, improved reliability, reduced maintenance and enhanced performance. Once your mower is ready, cut your grass to 2 1/2 inches and mow frequently for a perfectly manicured lawn. Prune and/or remove dead leaves and branches. Using a set of shears, inspect each bush and tree on your property and prune the branches while removing those that have died. This process will support your plants growing in a proper, ordered shape while improving their overall health and appearance. Start a compost pile. Compost is a natural fertilizer that provides valuable nutrients to your plants throughout the summer. To create your own compost pile, start with a bed of leaves, garden trimmings or pine needles and add grass clippings and plant material at a 3-to-1 ratio favoring the former. Top each layer with a bed of soil and you ll create the perfect compost site. Bring birds to your yard. The benefit of birds in your HOME A Guide to Living in Luxury yard goes far beyond the music they make. Did you know a single chickadee can eat more than 1,000 insects per year? This helps cut down on pesky insects ruining your backyard cookout or feasting on your plants. So add a bird feeder or two, a birdbath and some fruitor seed-bearing plants to draw the birds in. Your yard and garden will be all the better for it. Warmer weather is on the way, so don t delay. Now s the perfect time to start those outdoor projects. The hours you spend now will benefit you every day in the months ahead. To learn more about how the KOHLER 7000 Series Engine can help you achieve the perfect cut, visit kohlerengines.com. H Fast, Effective Garage Door Safety Tips To advertise, call (BPT) You probably put little thought into your garage door. You touch a button. The door opens, closes and you go about your day. While the garage door the largest, heaviest moving object in your home serves as the primary entry point of the home to many of us, it can also be dangerous if not used and maintained properly. Here are a few tips to help keep your family safe: Always keep hands and fingers away from moving parts. Never touch a garage door or its components while the door is in motion. Remotes and openers aren t toys; however, the buttons may be very attractive to children. Take precautions to keep them out of little ones reach. Children should not be able to reach wall-mounted controls. Be sure to install push-button wall controls at least 5 feet off the ground. Children and adults should never stand, run or play under a garage door. When a garage door is moving, be sure to stand at least several yards away. Never try to enter or exit the garage by racing under a moving garage door. When opening or closing the garage door, always keep the door in view until the door is fully opened or fully closed. Make certain that no adults, children or animals try to enter or exit while the door is moving. Homeowners can and should perform simple chores such as semi-annual lubrication of garage door hinges, rollers and springs. Other tasks like spring repair/ replacement, track and roller repair/replacement and door installation are best left to trained service professionals to ensure the work is done properly and to avoid potential injuries. Visit GarageDoorCare.com and click on the Find a Qualified Professional tab to locate a qualified professional nearby. Find a professional before you need one then if you need help with your garage door, you ll know the service work will be completed properly at a fair price. H

20 EXPOSITOR-LEDGER April 2018 Page B5 Home Is a Wood or Composite Deck Right for Your Home? IS YOUR WOODWORK WORN OUT or HIDDEN UNDER PAINT? Since 1978 REFINISHING INTERIOR WOODWORK & CABINETRY TheFinishingTouchRoch.com John Cary (BPT) Outdoor living is a home improvement trend that can t be ignored. If you plan to add a deck to your house, remember the design is only one aspect of the planning process. The materials you decide to use can affect the project in numerous ways, from the initial investment to maintenance years from now. Deciding between wood and composite decking can seem complex. You may have heard composite is superior but costly. You also may have heard that wood is greener yet more susceptible to bugs. Get the facts when it comes to wood versus composite so you can make the right choice for your home. Cost Building a deck with composite materials will cost more than virgin wood initially, but not as much as most people think. The substructure is the same cost for either option and the remainder of the project could cost about 25 percent more for composite. That cost, though, is often recouped over time because there is little maintenance required with composites, while maintaining a wood deck can cost hundreds of dollars each year. Want to see how the numbers compare? Visit and check out the EPA s Green- Scapes Tools Excel Decking Cost Calculator and an example that compares the cost of building a new deck with composites versus conventional wood. Maintenance Low maintenance is in high demand for homeowners, and decking is no exception. Wood decks require major maintenance every one to two years. Nail pops and splinters are common safety hazards with wood decks, as are cracked, warped and rotted boards that need to be replaced. Plus, wood decks must be refinished every year or two, a project that can cost $450 to $850 per year and take an entire weekend or longer to complete. Capped composite decking from Fiberon will never splinter, crack or require staining, unlike wood decking. This composite decking is so durable that it comes with the industry s first stain and fade warranty for up to 25 years. Typical maintenance requires just a few hours a year to clean the surface with a deck brush or power sprayer. Visit to learn more. Eco-friendly Many people believe wood is a more environmentally friendly option than composite decking. In actuality, the opposite is true. Composites are created from recycled materials and keep waste out of landfills. Fiberon alone prevents more than 50,000 tons of plastic and other waste from ending up in landfills or incinerators every year. Composite decking also saves trees. In addition to using locally sourced plastics, Fiberon composite decking includes wood scraps acquired from nearby cabinet and door manufacturers. Furthermore, just because it s wood doesn t mean it doesn t contain chemicals. In fact, most wood lumber is pressure-treated with different chemicals to boost its integrity and make it last longer. Additionally, because wood is susceptible to bugs like termites, you might need to treat the space to prevent infestation. Termites, of course, are not a concern with composite decking. Appearance Wood is undeniably beautiful and always blends nicely with the natural elements of the outdoors. But thanks to advanced technology, composites mimic real wood so closely that often you can t tell the difference. This is particularly beneficial if you want the look of an exotic species without the upkeep. Today, capped composite technology allows for realistic wood coloring and embossed grain patterns. Bottom line When planning a new deck, don t forget the impact your material choice will have on the project. Get the facts and make the right decision so you can enjoy your outdoor spaces to the fullest. H Need Insulation? Call Coler InsulatIon today! 22 EXPOSITOR-LEDGER April 2018 Page B7 Homeowners and Homebuilders See Value in Smart Appliances MONROE Home MONROE KITCHEN EQUIPMENT, INC. When you think of smart technology, you may think of your smartphone, tablet or vehicle, but soon, you may also think of such household appliances as your dishwasher, refrigerator or laundry pair. Home building professionals nationwide increasingly are working with manufacturers to install smart appliances into new and remodeled homes, in light of new government standards, technology advances and a focus on energy efficiency. Smart appliances provide greater convenience, reduce energy consumption and help people live a more sustainable lifestyle, says Maureen Sertich, North America sustainability lead at Whirlpool Corporation, which manufactures Whirlpool, Maytag, KitchenAid, Jenn-Air and Amana appliance brands. These transformative technologies allow consumers to learn about their energy use and connect to their appliances online to actively manage their home s energy consumption. According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, 13 percent of the energy used in a typical home can be attributed to just four common appliances the refrigerator, dishwasher, clothes washer, and clothes dryer. But that will soon change, as leading companies take steps to improve upon energy efficient designs of these four appliances, with the added assistance of smart appliance technology. For example, Whirlpool Corporation recently launched 6th Sense Live technology, which allows homeowners to control appliances from their computer or smartphone. For instance, homeowners can activate their washer s fan for forgotten wet clothes; and the refrigerator will send a text message when the power supply has been disrupted so people can know if their food is safe to eat. Smart appliances from these pioneering brands can also track energy consumption and connect to the smart grid, a modernized electric grid being rolled out nationwide that uses communications technology to more effectively manage electricity demand. This means that, with consumer permission, the appliance can respond to utility signals asking it to postpone or cutback operations when energy demand is high or more expensive. This year, one of the nation s largest production homebuilders, KB Home, is collaborating with Whirlpool Corporation to roll out these smart-grid ready appliances to all KB Home communities nationwide. More information on smart-grid-ready and sustainable appliances can be found at gov or Learning more about smart technology for your home can save you money and make your home more planet-friendly in the process. 24 EXPOSITOR-LEDGER April 2018 Page B9 Home Maximize Your Basement s Potential When you get down to it, remodeling your basement can help you make the most of your space. by SCOTT MCGILLIVRAY With house prices on the rise, finishing a basement is the latest trend toward building even more equity in the home. A finished basement can offer a little extra room to give a growing family space to breathe, and with so many uses, a renovated basement may be the exact solution to what your home is missing. It can provide additional storage space, a soundproofed media room, craft room, guest room or income suite. The possibilities are practically endless. Here are some tips on how to give your basement a 180-degree makeover: Waterproof it. Check the interior foundation and floors to make sure there are no existing moisture issues, water damage or mold problems. Address any primary moisture issues before finishing the space. Examine grading to ensure water runs away from your foundation. Soundproof it. Installing acoustic insulation can provide an excellent excuse for cranking up the subwoofer, hosting a get-together or letting the kids run wild. Soundproofing can be the ultimate solution to maximize your basement s peace, quiet and privacy. Industry experts suggest using Roxul Safe n Sound, which effectively absorbs sound and is easy to work with. Add or replace flooring. Installing a new floor can improve the overall comfort level and look of your basement. Vinyl, laminate, ceramic tile and engineered hardwood are great options. Say no to carpet, which can harbor mold and allergens, particularly in the basement, and don t forget to lay a subfloor. Add color. Transform the dull and boring space into an inviting oasis or a colorful playroom with a simple coat of paint. If your basement has low ceilings or limited natural light, choose lighter, warmer tones to brighten the space. To add some drama, consider adding depth and visual interest to your space with a different-colored accent wall. Accessorize it. Throw pillows, rugs, lighting and artwork are simple additions that can immediately enhance or change your basement s look and feel. Recessed lights can modernize, while artwork and throw pillows can add a splash of color. Accessories are really an opportunity to make it your own and let your personality shine through. They also provide an inexpensive way to keep your space looking fresh from year to year. H NAPS Refresh Your Home With a New Look! Most garage doors have a simple bolt lock that can be engaged from inside to prevent the door from being raised. Remember to also lock the door from the garage into your house. Everyone looks forward to vacation. With some simple prep, you can ensure your home stays secure while you re away. To learn more about home heating and air-conditioning, visit www. colemanac.com or follow H Since 1977 LESNIAK REMODELING (BPT) Warmer temperatures, budding trees and blooming flowers are all lovely parts of spring, but what you really look forward to is the start of vacation planning season! Deciding where to go and what to see, making arrangements and planning your wardrobe are all exciting aspects of summer vacation planning. But before you pack up to leave on your getaway, be sure to take care of the most important asset you ll be leaving at home your home itself. Before going away on vacation, homeowners do a lot of things to prepare for the security and safety of their home while away, including stopping the mail, powering down electronics and turning off water and gas, says Emily Lewicki, brand manager with Coleman Heating and Air Conditioning. Additionally, it is important to keep in mind that a home s temperature needs to be monitored, which can easily be done by using a programmable thermostat. While you re savoring the fun of your vacation planning, here are seven steps you also should take to prepare your home to remain secure while you re away: Stop the mail. Home safety experts agree: a stuffed mailbox is a sign of an empty home. The United States Postal Service allows you to request a vacation hold on your mail up to 30 days before your departure date. Go to holdmail.usps.com to see if this service is available in your area. You should also put newspaper and package delivery on hold, too, as uncollected newspapers or parcels in front of your house could also alert others that you re not home. Turn off water and gas. If a water or gas leak occurs while you re not there to address it, the emergency could cause significant damage to your home. You can reduce risks by turning off water flow to appliances like the clothes washer. To conserve energy and money, you can also turn off the gas flow to your water heater. Adjust the thermostat. You don t need to spend money to heat or cool your home to a comfortable level when you re not there to enjoy it. Turn down the thermostat, but don t turn your HVAC system completely off. Extreme temperatures can harm your home and its contents. A programmable thermostat can take care of temperature adjustments for you while you re away. If you don t already have a programmable thermostat, consider installing a model like Coleman s Hx thermostat. The touch-screen interface makes it easy to program the system, plus a free downloadable app allows you to control the thermostat from your smartphone, no matter where you travel. Just be sure to leave your Internet connection active at home so your thermostat can communicate with the app while you re away. Put lights on timers or sensors. A well lit home looks lived in and is less appealing to burglars. Put outside lights on sensors so they ll turn on when the sun goes down. Use timers to turn interior lights on and off at appropriate times. Prep your kitchen. Go through the refrigerator and pantry and throw away any food that could go bad while you re away. No one wants to come home to smelly, spoiled food. Empty the trash and arrange for a neighbor to put the trash at the curb on your scheduled pickup day. Unplug all small appliances like the coffee maker, toaster ovens, food processors, etc. Power down electronic devices. Items like computers, TVs and phone chargers all draw power while plugged in, even if they re not switched on. Turn off and unplug electronic devices to reduce power usage in the house and protect electronics from power surges while you re away. Secure the garage. 27 Page 12B B12 EXPOSITOR-LEDGER Month April 2018 Year Home Cost-Effective and Eco-Friendly Home Improvements Homeowners take on projects to improve their homes for a variety of reasons. Some may do so to make a home more functional, while others may do so to improve their home s resale value. Some homeowners take on a home improvement project to make their homes more eco-friendly. Such projects are often mistakenly assumed to be costly undertakings, but there are several cost-effective ways to make a home more eco-friendly. Upgrade Your Appliances A home improvement project does not have to require the use of a hammer and nails or the hiring of a contractor. A simple home improvement project like upgrading older appliances, including the washer and dryer, to newer, more efficient models can give a home a fresh look while reducing energy consumption. That reduction in energy consumption is a byproduct of the stricter standards placed on manufacturers who must adhere to guidelines to produce products that are more energy-efficient. For example, the Natural Resources Defense Council notes that today s energy-efficient refrigerators will use less than half the energy of models made as recently as 15 years ago. Specialty Plants for Every Landscape Add More Insulation Adding more insulation or replacing older insulation used to be an especially laborious process. However, in many instances insulation can now be added or upgraded to a home without any major reconstruction or demolition, reducing the cost of the project considerably. Adding more insulation to a home can reduce energy consumption in the winter, when the home will feel warmer and allow you to keep the thermostat at a more reasonable number. Japanese Maples Dwarf Conifers Woody Ornamentals Perenials Ferns Grasses Bamboo Carved Granite (585) Residential Commercial Lawn Irrigation Landscape Lighting No job is too big or too small! Rochester (585) Buffalo (716) Install High-Efficiency Water Fixtures Few people think about how much water they consume over the course of a typical day, but the figures might be eye-opening to those who hope to adopt a more eco-friendly lifestyle. According to the United States Geological Survey s Water Science School, it s generally accepted that the average person uses between 80 and 100 gallons of water each day. Showers seem to be especially wasteful, as older shower heads might be using as much as 5 gallons per minute, or 50 gallons of water during a 10-minute shower. Older fixtures that consume such massive amounts of water can be easily and affordably replaced with newer, more efficient fixtures. Today s high-efficiency low-flow showerheads can provide a strong shower stream while reducing water consumption. Such showerheads are also less taxing on your water heater, reducing your energy consumption as a result. Homeowners can also install high-efficiency toilets that use as little as 1.3 gallons of water per flush (compared to older models that consumed as many as 5 gallons per flush). The Environmental Protection Agency estimates that installing water-efficient fixtures and appliances would save more than 3 trillion gallons of water and more than $18 billion annually. Install a Programmable Thermostat Programmable thermostats present another affordable way to improve a home and benefit the environment. Some of today s programmable thermostats can record personal preferences and usage and determine the best course of action for heating and cooling your home. Temperatures can be adjusted room-by-room, and the programmable thermostat allows homeowners to control their heating and cooling while they re out of the house, ensuring they re not paying to heat or cool an empty house and wasting energy in doing so. Home improvement projects don t have to be a grand undertaking, particularly when a homeowner s goal is to make a home more eco-friendly. A few minor and affordable changes may be all it takes to improve a home and benefit the environment at the same time. H Metro
