2 LIMITED WARRANTY AND LIMITATION OF LIABILITY Each Fluke Networks product is warranted to be free from defects in material and workmanship under normal use and service. The warranty period for the mainframe is 18 months and begins on the date of purchase. Parts, accessories, product repairs and services are warranted for 90 days, unless otherwise stated. Ni-Cad, Ni-MH and Li-Ion batteries, cables or other peripherals are all considered parts or accessories. The warranty extends only to the original buyer or end user customer of a Fluke Networks authorized reseller, and does not apply to any product which, in Fluke Networks opinion, has been misused, abused, altered, neglected, contaminated, or damaged by accident or abnormal conditions of operation or handling. Fluke Networks warrants that software will operate substantially in accordance with its functional specifications for 90 days and that it has been properly recorded on non-defective media. Fluke Networks does not warrant that software will be error free or operate without interruption. Fluke Networks authorized resellers shall extend this warranty on new and unused products to end-user customers only but have no authority to extend a greater or different warranty on behalf of Fluke Networks. Warranty support is available only if product is purchased through a Fluke Networks authorized sales outlet or Buyer has paid the applicable international price. Fluke Networks reserves the right to invoice Buyer for importation costs of repair/replacement parts when product purchased in one country is submitted for repair in another country. Fluke Networks warranty obligation is limited, at Fluke Networks option, to refund of the purchase price, free of charge repair, or replacement of a defective product which is returned to a Fluke Networks authorized service center within the warranty period. To obtain warranty service, contact your nearest Fluke Networks authorized service center to obtain return authorization information, then send the product to that service center, with a description of the difficulty, postage and insurance prepaid (FOB destination). Fluke Networks assumes no risk for damage in transit. Following warranty repair, the product will be returned to Buyer, transportation prepaid (FOB destination). If Fluke Networks determines that failure was caused by neglect, misuse, contamination, alteration, accident or abnormal condition of operation or handling, or normal wear and tear of mechanical components, Fluke Networks will provide an estimate of repair costs and obtain authorization before commencing the work. Following repair, the product will be returned to the Buyer transportation prepaid and the Buyer will be billed for the repair and return transportation charges (FOB Shipping point). THIS WARRANTY IS BUYER S SOLE AND EXCLUSIVE REMEDY AND IS IN LIEU OF ALL OTHER WARRANTIES, EXPRESS OR IMPLIED, INCLUDING BUT NOT LIMITED TO ANY IMPLIED WARRANTY OR MERCHANTABILITY OR FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE. 5 Pair Gain Applique II SPOTS (PGA IIS) Application The Pair Gain Applique II SPOTS (PGA IIS) when used with the Direct Access Test Unit (DATU) extends the technician s testing capabilities to subscriber lines served by pair gain systems. 6 Pair Gain Applique II SPOTS (PGA IIS) Users Guide Compatibility The PGA IIS is fully compatible with all standard DATU products. For additional information on DATU products, see the manual that came with the product. Description Note For Central Offices not equipped with a MFT bay, Fluke Networks offers a card file for mounting one DATU card and one PGA card. The card file mounts into a 19 or 23-inch rack and takes two standard mounting spaces. The PGA IIS, hereafter referred to as a PGA, controls the interface between the DATU and the Pair Gain Test Controller (PGTC). The PGA is a printed circuit card that plugs into the Metallic Facility Terminal (MFT) bay of the associated Central Office (CO). PGA IIS can access and condition two wire SPOTS DLC lines. PGA Functions When used in conjunction with a DATU, the PGA performs the following functions: After the directory number has been accessed, the PGA recognizes the Channel unit signature of the TR08 (IDLC) or Stand-alone Digital Loop (UDLC) Carrier system and accesses the test mode of that system. Monitors status and progress of the PGTC, or its equivalent functional operation for IDLC systems, and informs the user of that status. Relays the digital channel test results to the user. Allows DATU to access and condition the DC-Test Pair and therefore the subscriber s F2 facility. When DATU is installed, PGA IIS tells the DATU that it has accessed a pair gain line. This allows DATU-RT to access Metallic Access Units (MAUs) in the Remote Terminal. 8 Pair Gain Applique II SPOTS (PGA IIS) Users Guide DIP Switch Settings The four-position DIP switch S1 (see Figure 2) of the PGA IIS, must be set dependent upon the type of CO: 5-ESS: Set switch S1-1 (switch 1, position 1) to ON and S1-2, S1-3, and S1-4 to OFF. Stromberg-Carlson DCO: Set S1-2 to ON and S1-1, S1-3, and S1-4 to OFF. COs with Solid-State A Relays: Set S1-1 and S1-2 to ON, and S1-3 and S1-4 to OFF. 9 Application Figures Figures 3 through 8 show various applications of the PGA and DATU in two or four-wire MFT bays in the following: 5-ESS with Universal SLC-96s or with Universal and Integrated DL 5-ESS with Integrated DLC only DMS-10 and DMS-100 Step by Step Application Notes Continuity Card The PGA was shipped with a fiberglass card labeled PGA Continuity Card. This card is used for troubleshooting and should be stored for easy accessibility. PGA IIS is Backwards Compatible Previous installations of PGA accept the PGA IIS with no changes in the wiring. PGTC Wiring Wiring to a port of the PGTC allows DATU and PGA IIS access to the UDLC lines in the office. The Main Frame appearance of the assigned PGTC port may be 3 or 4 wire. When using the 4-wire appearance, there should be continuity between the TG and G leads of the PGATC. If there is no continuity, a strap must be placed between TG and G leads. For a 3-wire appearance, connect the BS2 lead of the PGA IIS directly to the G lead of the NTT. Figure 3. 13 Wiring Connections Table 2 shows the wiring connections between the PGA and the DATU, PGTC or NTT, access line, and CO power. Figure 9 shows the numbering of the pins on the PGA. Table 2. 15 Flow Charts for Locating Faults Verify the following before proceeding to the flow charts: 1 The DATU has been installed and completely tested. 2 The carrier channel system, including its DC test pair, is working. 3 When applicable, a vacant PGTC port has been assigned to the PGA. 4 The PGA frame wiring has been installed and tested per Table 2. 5 Install the PGA in the assigned MFT slot and observe the LEDs (see LED Status Table, Table 4) on the front panel of the PGA. 6 Go to the flow chart (Figure 10) for series DATU installations, or, if you have a series DATU go to Figure After testing has been completed through step 14 of the Fault Flow Chart (Figure 12) go to the Loop Conditioning Flow chart (Figure 13) to verify that the loop conditioning features of the DATU are functioning through the PGA. 23 Operation Accessing a DATU with a Pair Gain The DATU operating procedures, when used with a PGA, are the same as described in the applicable DATU manual, except as noted below. To use the system, do the following: 1 Dial telephone number assigned to the DATU. The DATU returns a 440 Hz dial tone. After receiving this tone, the User Password must be entered within 7 seconds. Note If busy tone is heard after dialing the User password, the No Test Trunk is either in use or is locked-up. 2 After entering the User password, the DATU returns the 440 Hz tone again. After 7 seconds, if no number is dialed, the voice prompt, DIAL THE SUBSCRIBER LINE NUMBER is heard. 3 After entering the subscriber line number, the DATU provides the following voice responses: OK if the line is idle. BUSY LINE if the line is in use. If the PGA is installed with a series DATU, audible tones are generated to communicate PGA, PGTC and channel unit status to the craft person. In these installations, an alternating 350/440 Hz warble tone indicates that the PGA is attempting pair gain line access. Channel unit and test pair status is communicated as a series of tone bursts (see Table 3). If the PGA is installed with a series DATU, all status conditions and test results are communicated in voice messages provided by the DATU. The DATU announces the state of the subscriber line/ntt with one of the following: Because the PGTC cannot access busy lines, the DATU is unable to determine whether a busy line is pair gain or not. The DATU can, however, monitor busy pair gain lines at the Central Office Terminal (COT). If the line is idle, the PGA attempts to activate the PGTC. The PGTC, in turn, tests the carrier channel and communicates the results to the DATU. These operations require additional time and may result in a delay of up to 30 seconds. After successfully completing these steps, one of the following DATU voice messages are provided: SINGLE-PARTY LINE if a good single-party channel unit is detected. MULTI-PARTY LINE if a good multi-party channel is detected. COIN LINE if a good coin channel is detected. Table 3. 24 Pair Gain Applique II SPOTS (PGA IIS) Users Guide If the PGA is unable to activate the PGTC or the PGTC encounters a problem in testing the carrier channel, the DATU issues one of the following voice messages: BYPASS PAIR BUSY or PGTC FAILURE: The DC bypass pair is in use, all PGTC test circuits are busy or the PGTC cannot complete carrier system connections. PAIR GAIN SYSTEM ALARM: The carrier system serving the selected line is in a major alarm condition. Access was not made. CHANNEL NOTAVAILABLE: Channel test results were not provided by the PGTC. Access may still be there. BAD CHANNEL: Channel test failed possible bad channel unit. Access was made. After a failure in carrier channel tests or in activating the PGTC, the DATU remains in Menu Item Selection mode so that CO personnel may more easily determine the problem. If one of the above error messages is heard however, the DATU is probably not connected to the line to be tested. Therefore, line conditioning commands will be accepted and confirmed by the DATU but the condition may not necessarily exist on the line anytime after one of the above error messages is heard. WCaution During the first three to six seconds of the warble tone or for approximately three to six seconds after the PAIR GAIN LINE PROCESSING message is heard, +116 VDC from the PGA is placed on the Tip side of the PGA output port towards the carrier channel. When PGA IIS is used with a Series DATU, two short bursts of 600 Hz tone may be heard during or after the PAIR GAIN LINE PROCESSING message or Standard DATU Tests Following the response described in Table 4, any DATU test function may be selected, as described in the DATU manual, even if the carrier channel is bad. If a test function is not selected within seven seconds, the DATU repeats the available options, and then disconnects if no selection is made. LEDs Note Infrequently a green unlabeled LED may light during normal operation of the PGA or when the PGA is idle. The status of this LED may be ignored. The PGA has two green and one red LEDs that indicate the status of the unit (see Table 4). LED Maintenance Table 4.
