Walsh, Golf Contact pwalsh@latech.edu #WeAreLATech HOST UP NEXT FOR LOUISIANA TECH Louisiana Tech will make its first NCAA Regional appearance ever and just the second NCAA postseason appearance in school history when it tees off at the Tucson Regional on May 16. While a regional appearance is a first for the Bulldogs, as is a trip to Tucson, all will not be new for Louisiana Tech Monday morning. Tech has already faced five of the programs in the 14-team field as well as one of the individuals. Even more familiar, all three Conference USA teams selected for the NCAA postseason (Louisiana Tech, North Texas and UAB) were assigned to the Tucson Regional. LA Tech is even paired with North Texas on Monday. In addition to a challenging par-72, 7,258-yard course that is rated as one of Golfweek s Top 100 Modern Courses, Louisiana Tech is also facing stiff competition in a field that includes five teams ranked in the top 25 with No. 1 Stanford leading the way. LA Tech qualified for the NCAA Regionals by receiving an automatic bid after winning the 2016 Conference USA Championship. The Bulldogs finished second following three rounds of stroke play and qualified for the four-team match play bracket. In the semifinals, No. 2 LA Tech defeated No. 3 North Texas, 3-2, then advanced to upset No. 1 UAB, 3-2. While the title was Louisiana Tech s 14th conference championship in men s golf it marked the first since the Bulldogs were in an automatic bid league and first since the regional play format was implemented by the NCAA in By upending UAB, LA Tech clinched its first conference title since a member of the Southland Conference in WE ARE... 2 BEEN THROUGH THE DESERT ON A HORSE WITH NO NAME When Louisiana Tech heads to Tucson, Arizona for its first NCAA Regional appearance on May 16-18, it may be the first time the Bulldogs will compete in Tucson but it won t be the first time the team has played at high elevation or in the desert. Last September, LA Tech played in Albuquerque, New Mexico at the William H. Tucker Invitational hosted by the University of New Mexico. Additionally, a few Bulldogs have experienced high altitude/low precipitation areas over the last few years. Last summer Victor Lange competed at the Southwestern Amateur in Scottsdale, Arizona as he carded a four-round score of 3-under-par to finish fourth. Ben Robinson has experience at high altitude as well. The England native played at the Swiss International Championship located high up in the Alps. Both Lange and Robinson were part of the qualifying five that represented Louisiana Tech in its last Western Athletic Conference Championship tournament held in Henderson, Nevada in CHALLENGING COURSE, CHALLENGING FIELD Louisiana Tech is not just facing the top-ranked team in the country in Stanford this week at the Tucson Regional but the course itself will be plenty challenging for the Bulldogs. Some facts about The Gallery Golf Club (North Course): The North Course is designed by John Fought and British Open Champion and 2006 Ryder Cup Captain Tom Lehman. It opened in 1998 and is nestled against the foothills of the Tortolita Mountains, sitting at an average elevation of 2,875 feet above sea level. It was ranked No. 1 in Southwest Arizona by Golf Digest and is acknowledged as one of Golfweek s Top 100 Modern Courses. The North Course was a co-host of the Tuscon Open in 2001 and hosted the 2014 Men s Pac-12 Golf Championship. The 9th Hole is considered one of, if not the, toughest in all of Arizona. From the tips, the par five plays 725 yards. This will be the only hole of the tournament the players do not play from the tips (playing from the blue which is over 100 yards shorter playing at 609 yards). The North Course only has two water hazards, both coming on par fives. The North Course, for this tournament, is a par-72 and measures 7,258 yards. FOR JENKINS, IT ALL BEGINS IN TUCSON For Louisiana Tech head coach Jeff Jenkins, team debuts seem to begin in Tucson. This year s regional bid to Tucson will be a bit of a deja vu for the coach as he takes Louisiana Tech to its first regional in southern Arizona. That is because his first regional at his previous stop, as assistant coach at Texas Tech, was also in Tucson. The 2011 Tucson Regional saw Texas Tech finish ninth, carding 6-over-par over the three rounds. LANGE GETS THE THREE-PEAT In 2014, Victor Lange became the first Bulldog to receive a bid to the NCAA Regionals in school history. Last year, he repeated that accomplishment as he registered an NCAA Regional bid in back-to-back years as he was selected as the No. 3 seed among the individuals at the Lubbock Regional. Now the South Africa native is headed back and he has company. Lange will make his third consecutive NCAA Regional appearance as Louisiana Tech has qualified for the NCAA postseason by gaining an automatic bid by winning the Conference USA Championship. But for Lange, this trip won t be to the Lone Star State for a change. His two previous NCAA Regional appearances San Antonio (2014) and Lubbock (2015) were both in the Lone Star State. Lange will still head west, however, as Louisiana Tech was selected for the Tucson Regional. BULLDOGS HEADED TO NCAA REGIONALS FOR FIRST TIME (AS A TEAM) After winning the 2016 Conference USA Championship with a 3-2 match play finals win over No. 38 UAB, Louisiana Tech secured its first automatic bid to the NCAA postseason in school history. The Bulldogs have only made a team appearance on the NCAA stage once before, finishing 18th at the 1969 NCAA Division II Championship when there was no regional level, LA Tech was a Division II school and the tournament consisted of four players per team competing and scoring in four rounds of stroke play instead of five players competing with four scoring over three rounds of stroke play. Louisiana Tech has been represented at the NCAA (Division I) regionals twice before as Victor Lange has donned the Red and Blue as an individual at the 2014 (San Antonio, Texas) and 2015 (Lubbock, Texas) NCAA Regionals. LOUISIANA TECH CLAIMS FIRST CONFERENCE TITLE SINCE 1980 Thirty-six years is a long time. That was the time span between Louisiana Tech s last (1980) and most recent (2016) conference championship. That 36-year drought came to an end on April 27 when Louisiana Tech won the Conference USA Championship in the finals of the match play round with a 3-2 upset of top-seeded and No. 38-ranked UAB. Here s a look back at the last time the Bulldogs won a title, the 1980 Southland Conference Championship: 1980: President: Jimmy Carter Gallon of Gas: $1.25 Dozen Eggs: $0.91 Gallon of Milk: $2.16 Top song: Call Me by Blondie Top TV show: Dallas Top movie: Empire Strikes Back JENKINS TO MAKE SIXTH CONSECUTIVE REGIONAL AP- PEARANCE For Louisiana Tech head coach Jeff Jenkins, the 2016 Conference USA Championship and automatic bid to the NCAA postseason will mark the sixth consecutive NCAA Regional appearance. Last season in his first season as head coach of the Bulldogs Jenkins made it three in a row when Victor Lange qualified as an individual, finishing tied for 22nd at the Lubbock, Texas Regional. Prior to joining the LA Tech Family, Jenkins went to the regionals in 2013 and 2014 as an assistant coach for Texas Tech. At the 2013 NCAA Regionals in Columbus, Ohio, Jenkins helped the Red Raiders to a fifth-place finish while Texas Tech finished sixth at the Raleigh, North Carolina Regional in Jenkins and the Red Raiders also made appearances in the 2012 Greensboro (N.C.) Regional and the 2011 Tucson (Ariz.) Regional. BULLDOGS RIDE MOMENTUM INTO CONFERENCE USA CHAMPIONSHIP Heading into the Conference USA Championship in Texarkana, the Bulldogs were hoping to ride a recent momentum of hot play into the championship and succeeded in doing so. Louisiana Tech posted two of its top 10 rounds of the year in its last tournament at the Jim West Intercollegiate on April with another top-10 round also taking place in April at the Old Waverly Collegiate Championship. That makes three of the team s best rounds of the year have taken place in the month of April with the C-USA Championship set for April NCAA Regional Sites Site Venue Tuscaloosa, Ala. 3 QUITE THE BIRTHDAY PRESENT FOR MOM Louisiana Tech true freshman Jacob Wyatt had the weight of the world on his shoulders. With the Bulldogs trailing top-seeded and 38th-ranked UAB, 2-0, Wyatt trailed Lee Hodges Conference USA s topranked golfer by three holes with four to play in the finals of the match play round at the C-USA Championship. But then Wyatt turned it on, firing three straight birdies and a par to win four consecutive holes and to defeat Hodges, 1UP. Victor Lange and Ben Robinson, both 2UP through 15, secured their wins (Robinson winning on 17) to clinch the league championship for the Bulldogs. The bonus for Wyatt? A product of Bossier City just an hour south of Texarkana Country Club (host of the C-USA Championship), Wyatt s mother traveled up for the championship and was watching her son make the amazing comeback for the win on her birthday, no less. VICTOR LANGE NAMED INITIAL CONFERENCE USA GOLFER OF THE WEEK IN Victor Lange was recognized as the Conference USA Golfer of the Week on Sept. 16 after a strong start to his senior season at the Sam Hall Intercollegiate. Lange opened the season in familiar fashion, finishing 8-under 66 at the Sam Hall Intercollegiate hosted by Southern Miss at the Hattiesburg Country Club (par 71/6,902 yards). The senior fired an opening round 66 (-5), followed by rounds of 68 and 71 to finish in a tie for sixth. Lange did his best work on the par 5s, placing second in the field scoring (4.22/-7). He buried an eagle and 11 birdies to go along with 37 pars. Lange was the highest C-USA finisher in the event as Louisiana Tech, Middle Tennessee, Rice, Southern Miss and UTSA all competed. LANGE NAMED C-USA GOLFER OF THE WEEK AFTER PLAYOFF WIN Fresh off his individual tournament title at the UTSA Oak Hills Invitational where he beat six golfers ranked in the top 100 nationally, Louisiana Tech senior Victor Lange was named the Conference USA Golfer of the Week on Feb. 10. Lange bested six individuals ranked in the top 100 en route to individual medalist honors ( =212) at the UTSA Oak Hills Invitational at the Oak Hills Country Club (par 71; 6,765 yards). The senior carded a 3-under-par 68 in the final round to jump eight spots and force a playoff with Texas State s David Faraudo, edging Faraudo on the first playoff hole to claim the win. The tournament crown, Lange s second of his career, marked the first time since 2010 that a golfer not from a Big 12 Conference school has won the individual title at the Oak Hills Invitational. LANGE NETS THIRD CONFERENCE HONOR AFTER TOP PERFORMANCE Victor Lange registered his third top-10 finish of the season and the highest individual finish of any Conference USA golfer over the week as he placed tied for seventh at the Little Rock First Tee Classic on March 29. Then ranked No. 188 in the nation, Lange beat the nation s 32nd-ranked golfer by two strokes in a tournament that featured challenging conditions. No other C-USA golfer registered a top-10 finish on the week and Lange was the only golfer in the league to defeat a top 60-ranked individual. He is the only golfer in C-USA with multiple Golfer of the Week honors this year. LANGE NETS SECOND CAREER TOURNAMENT WIN WITH PLAYOFF VICTORY Last season Louisiana Tech golfer Victor Lange rallied to force a playoff in challenging for an individual title, but fell short in that playoff. This year, the senior finished the job. Victor Lange carded a 3-under-par 68 to force a playoff and claimed the individual title on the first playoff hole to edge Texas State s David Faraudo for the medal at the UTSA Oak Hills Invitational in San Antonio on Feb. 9. The win marked just the second individual title of his career and the first for a Bulldog golfer since the season when Travis Wilmore won the Jim Rivers Intercollegiate. LANGE NAMED CONFERENCE USA GOLFER OF THE YEAR, RECEIVES ALL-CONFERENCE FIRST TEAM HONORS Victor Lange was honored on last season as he was named the Conference USA Golfer of the Year while also receiving First Team All-Conference honors. For Lange, it is just another way to put his name in the Louisiana Tech record books as he becomes the first Bulldog golfer to receive Golfer of the Year honors. He also becomes the first golfer in school history to be receive all-conference honors three times. VICTOR LANGE TIES STATE COLLE- GIATE, LOUISIANA TECH RECORD Last season Lange tied a Louisiana Tech and Louisiana collegiate record for a low 18-hole round by firing a 62 in the third round of the Jim Rivers Intercollegiate at Squire Creek Country Club in Choudrant. That matched the 62 carded by Louisiana Tech s Roy Pace in 1962 at the Louisiana Tech Invitational in Ruston. For a complete list of Victor Lange s impact on the record book, please see page 9. That old adage should be heeded especially when talking about Louisiana Tech junior Victor Lange and something he has proven multiple times. When Louisiana Tech headed out west for the Lamkin San Diego Classic on March 9-10, Lange caught food poisoning before the opening round but played through it to finish third, beating out six golfers ranked in the top 100. That was similar to the 2014 NCAA Regionals in San Antonio, Texas where Lange played the tournament despite suffering from shingles, strep throat (not contagious) and scarlet fever. Despite all of that, Lange still finished in the top 25 with a 4-over-par performance.

4 NCAA CHAMPIONSHIP HISTORY Louisiana Tech has only made one appearance at the NCAA Championships in school history which came in 1969 after the Bulldogs won the Gulf States Conference Championship title. LA Tech automatically qualified that season for the NCAA Division II Championship where the Bulldogs finished 18th, shooting 1,329 as a team. New Mexico hosted the event. In 2014, Victor Lange became the first LA Tech golfer to qualify for the NCAA Regionals. Lange went on to a top-25 finish despite playing through strep throat and the shingles that week in San Antonio. John Lewis Sams rounded out the top five for LA Tech as he finished tied for 54th at 9-over-par ( =222) as he carded a 1-over-par 72 on Tuesday. McNeese State claimed the team title as the Cowboys finished the tournament at 23-under-par ( =829) while UL-Lafayette placed second at 8-under-par ( =845), finishing one shot ahead of Louisiana Tech. LA Tech Golf Finishes 13th at William H. Tucker Invitational ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - Louisiana Tech mimicked its 19-over-par opening round on Saturday as the Bulldogs wrapped up the William H. Tucker Invitational in 13th place at 43-over-par 907, just four strokes ahead of Arizona. Senior Victor Lange led the team overall at 4-overpar ( =220) as he struggled Saturday, carding 4-over-par in the final round. That dropped him to tie for 24th individually. Freshman Hunter Glenn led the Bulldogs Saturday with a 1-under-par 71 in the final round, pushing him up to a tie for 65th overall in the tournament. Glenn carded a 13-over-par score for the three rounds with a 229 score overall ( =229). Host New Mexico won the tournament with a team score of 24-over-par 840, 19 strokes ahead of second place Texas Tech (5-under-par 859). UNLV and Colorado State tied for third at 4-over-par. The Lobos Andrej Bevins won the individual title at 10-under-par ( ), edging UNLV s AJ McInerney by two strokes. Bulldogs Drop to 10th at David Toms Intercollegiate BATON ROUGE, LA. - Freshman Hunter Glenn carded a 2-under-par 70 Sunday but the rest of the Bulldogs struggled as Louisiana Tech dropped to 10th in the final round of the David Toms Intercollegiate at The University Club in Baton Rouge. Glenn shined Sunday to move up 14 spots as he finished tied for 16th overall with an 8-over-par ( =224) tournament score. That marks the highest finish for the young golfer in three tournaments competed in this year. Jake Pritchard, competing as an individual, carded a 2-over-par 74 Sunday as he finished tied for 24th overall to finish the weekend at 11-over-par ( =227). The normally even-keel Victor Lange struggled on the front nine with a 9-over-par score at the turn and only registered one birdie on the day as he dropped to 15-over-par ( =231) for the tournament, dropping 29 spots and finishing tied for 39th overall. Ben Robinson, who led LA Tech in Saturday s afternoon round, also struggled Sunday as he carded an 8-over-par 80 for the final round. The senior dropped 19 spots to finish tied for 39th alongside Lange.
