PWGA PACIFIC WOMEN'S GOLF ASSOCIATION 2017 Annual Report

2017 President s Letter Nancy Boggs This year I have been away from home so much that I m surprised my husband recognizes me. I have played in all the major tournaments this year (I picked out the courses, you would think I might have played better). I have participated in many meetings regarding the USGA initiative. I am so thankful for the ladies who worked with me this year, Caroline, Lynn and Jane. I also include the team from WGANC, Eva, Kim, Cathy and Sue from WNHGA. Some of these ladies are on the transition team and it will be their job to fine tune our deal with NCGA. I enjoyed meeting many of you at the Workshops, and traveling with the team, while exhausting, also gives the traveling team a better chance to know one another. Traveling to the Warm Meeting this year with Lynn and Caroline gave us the opportunity to see how our counterparts across the country were dealing with the USGA initiative. I had the pleasure of sharing announcing duties on the first tee with Kim Algren from WGANC at the CWC in Ojai this year. Those young women are amazing. I played in the Challenge Tournament that we have with the boards of PWGA against WGANC and once again we brought home the trophy for our side. I attended the 50th anniversary celebrations for two nine hole clubs, Buchanan Fields and Manteca Sweet Swingers golf clubs. Way to go ladies! I managed to participate in playdays in the Monterey Area and Sacramento Area and even a couple in the Stockton Area. This years Team Play found me on top of a hill in the mist and fog as a spotter. The fog was so dense that someone told her partner to hit her ball in the direction of the post on the hill (I was that post). The next day was beautiful as the team pictures will attest. My year has been full and I am very grateful to have served you all. I hope to see many of you in future tournaments this next year and I leave you in Lynn s good hands. Nancy Boggs

From the Executive Director Caroline O Brien Dear Members, PWGA celebrated 70 years in The mission of PWGA is to support women amateur golfers playing public courses in Northern California. I think our founder, Helen Lengfeld, would be proud of her legacy. PWGA carries out this mission with the help of over 100 volunteers who take on the business of the association through their work on the Executive Board, Area Boards, Niners Board, Course Rating Team and the Rules Team. Thank you to the members of the 2017 Executive Board for their diligent work this past year, with a special thank you to those members who have completed their terms of office; Zelna Morrow, Marilyn Domingo, Patti Soiseth and Julie Gonzalez. Special thanks to Kaaren Walsh, Course Rating director and to the women of the Course Rating team for their years of service. Under the new USGA business model, PWGA will no longer be responsible for rating the Northern California Courses for women. It is comforting to know that many of our raters will join the NCGA rating team and continue to rate courses in our area. These women and the women who volunteer at the area and club level are to be thanked for the strong presence and voice of women s golf in Northern California. In our collaboration with NCGA our goal is to ensure that women continue to have a voice in the golf community and that our members are provided enhanced services. In 2018, your PWGA membership will include a membership in NCGA, so our members will receive the additional benefits of the quarterly NCGA magazine as well as discounts for play at the Poppy Hills and Poppy Ridge golf courses. We will still continue to provide services we have always offered; workshops, rules education, playdays and our major tournaments. We will also continue our support of our benevolent projects. Through the generosity of our members we raised over $30,000 in donations. We awarded 42 grants to Junior Girls Programs and we hosted 5 events for our UVS Swing Club. We worked with WGANC to offer 4 Helen Lengfeld Memorial High School Tournaments, which hosted almost 400 high school golfers. I am so grateful to be part of this organization and to work with this amazing group of talented women. Thank you, Sincerely, Caroline O Brien, Executive Director You can reach me at our office PWGA or via cobrien@golfpwga.org

My most difficult task as PWGA Vice President has definitely been site selection for our 2018 tournaments. With all the golf courses located in Northern California, you would think this is an easy task. But considering the cost of green fees, carts, range balls, luncheon costs, nearby lodging, etc. all help to narrow down the choices. Four out of six of our major tournaments are a double field which means that we require two courses that are somewhat close in proximity. Again, the choices are narrowed. Degree of difficulty, too much water, and too many forced carries are there any courses left?!? 2018 President Lynn Harvey Of course there are! Listed below are my final selections. We will be starting off the year with our Senior/Super Senior tournament in the Fresno Area which is an area often overlooked. There is a new course selected for our Mixed Couples/Summer Partner event called Toiyabe Golf Club in Washoe Valley which used to be a private course named Thunder Canyon. Our Team Play Championship will be held at Castle Oaks Golf Course in Ione which is near one of the nicest Indian casinos in California the Jackson Rancheria. So if you haven t ever played in a PWGA Major Tournament, please consider signing up. If it s been a long time, grab a friend/roommate and come have some fun. If you re a regular, I hope you will help spread the word about how much fun a girl s getaway (with golf) can be. My dream is to fill every field to its maximum capacity please come help me live that dream. 6 PWGA Tournaments 58 Playdays 3246 Players 964 Facebook Followers 42 Jr Grants Awarded 43 Hole in Ones Members $30,000+ in donations

2017 Course Ratings Kaaren Walsh- Course Rating Director 2017 has been a momentous year for PWGA and Course Rating has been no exception marks the end of PWGA (and WGANC) rating golf courses for women in Northern California. NCGA will assume the responsibility for rating all golf courses both public and private for both men and women. PWGA (and WGANC) raters will continue to rate for women but under the auspices of NCGA. The golf courses will benefit greatly by having the ratings all done at the same time and by the same team. To achieve this merger, PWGA (and WGANC) have been working with NCGA all year. In the early spring I attended a NCGA calibration meeting to meet the NCGA raters and learn more about their procedures. I was warmly welcomed not only by the NCGA rating director and his team of raters but also by two of the women NCGA board members. As the summer rating season began, NCGA invited all the area chairs and the most experienced raters to observe an actual NCGA rating. Many raters took the time to see how NCGA rating was accom- plished. They found that they were very welcomed by the NCGA raters and in some cases actually did the rating when NCGA was short a rater. The procedures differed only in the form that NCGA uses and most agreed that it would be easy to use after a couple of ratings. NCGA was very impressed with the caliber of our raters. Lastly NCGA invited all the PWGA and WGANC raters to a meeting, lunch at Ruby Hills in Pleasanton with golf after at Poppy Ridge to learn more about the benefits of rating with NCGA, how to sign up to rate and procedures on rating day. The Executive Directors of NCGA, PWGA, and WGANC attended along with a NCGA Board member and the Chair of NCGA Rating and Handicap Committee. Although 2017 was not a year in which the USGA rating system changed, PWGA and WGANC held two local calibration seminars. It is important to keep educating our raters as there is always more to learn about rating. They were held at Castlewood in Pleasanton and at The Ridge in Auburn. All raters were asked to take a calibration quiz which was taken from the USGA 2017 calibration quiz beforehand. Our instructors were Sheri Erskine from WGANC, Jerry Moreno from both organizations and me. It was a full day with lunch included. Each course that is rated is first measured by a team of raters yardage for each hole is obtained from the laser team from NCGA but we also need green sizes, width of landing zones, distances to water and OB to name a few. On rating day, the team evaluates each of 10 obstacles on each hole according to the numbers in the USGA rating guide and plays the course. So you can see we have many numbers to deal with. In 2017 USGA introduced a new Course Rating Program in which the office and I entered all the numbers. After the Area Chair approves the course rating and slope, the PWGA off ice sends certificates to each PWGA club or course along with handicap information. The new course rating and slope is automatically sent to the GHIN system ready for posting after the appropriate date. Our biggest challenge this year was flooding of many courses. We issued many temporary ratings to help the courses out. There are approximately 65 raters in 8 areas with an Area Chair for each. I would like to say thank you to all the course raters for all the hard work and effort you put into rating. It really shows. All this hard work translates into every golfer who has a handicap being able to play on a level playing field on most of the golf courses in the world. Over the last two years, I have enjoyed my work with the raters and my time on the PWGA Board. It has been a fantastic experience and I have learned so much.

2017 Tournaments Recap Marilyn Domingo - Tournament Director The 2017 PWGA Tournament season was one filled with great golf courses, laughter, and a few unexpected challenges. As my final year as a PWGA Board member, I reflect on the many friends I have met and how I appreciate each one that has participated in the tournaments for the past four years. The tournament season is not so much about the where, the food, and the scenery. It is about YOU, the participants that always make the event a success. Each event is special in its own way because you were there and we were all interacting to have a great time. From the first event in Angels Camp (it was a bit warm there, wasn t it) to our final event in beautiful Aptos we all had a great time with some very good golf. I know none of us will forget not being able to access the internet at Graeagle. Such a beautiful place but a bit remote, LOL! So this annual report is to salute the many wonderful golfers that participated with me during my four years as Tournament Director. The players and the volunteers that helped create the success are my heroes. Always ready to help and always eager to begin the day with a smile and the anticipation of a wonderful golf day. As the sun sets on 2017, 2018 is just ahead waiting to provide you with more great events and more laughter. I bid you farewell and look forward to seeing you on a golf course one day! Keep on smiling and keep on golfing!

2017 Nine Hole Clubs Sandra Ferrario- Niner s Director This was a very busy year for the Niner s whose area covers from the north Arrowhead WGC in Alturas to DeLaVega in Santa Cruz and Forest Meadows to Indian Valley. I am hoping to extend the playday areas to include more of the niner clubs. This was also an active year for Invitationals. The Modesto Muni-Niners hosted the County Fair, The Manteca Sweet Swingers hosted their 50th Anniversary, Greenhorn Creek Nine Hole Ladies hosted I ve Got A Feeling, Indian Creek Country Club hosted 50 Years of Golf, Buchanan Fields hosted Golf is Gold as they celebrated 50 years of Golf, Rancho Murieta Niners hosted Have Clubs Will Travel, Valley Hi Niners hosted a Mad Hatter s Tee Party, Wildwood Niners hosted the Hippie Chicks with Sticks, HVL 40-9ers hosted a Salad Bowl WREN s Invitational, and Rio Vista Women s Nine Holers hosted Bones N Broomstix to round out the year of Invitationals. For official playdays Rio Vista hosted the first playday of the year with 72 players and donated $61 to Jr Girls Golf. La Contenta hosted the May tournament with 60 players and collected $66.65 for Jr Golf. In June, Buchanan Fields hosted a playday with 72 players and collected $50 for Jr Golf. Manteca Sweet Swingers held their tournament in September with 55 players and collect $3. The total collected at the playdays was $ and the Niner account had a surplus and will donate $ to Jr Girls Golf for a total of $500. Thank you to the clubs who opened their wallets to support Jr Girls Golf. Our trip to Monterey was successful. We had to cap the field at 40 players and unfortunately had to turn away a couple of clubs. Next year we will plan for 50 players. So with 43 Niner s we played Monterey Pines the first day and Pacific Grove the next. All reports say everyone had a good time andlooking forward to next year. Team play was held August 7-8 at Elkhorn Golf Club in Stockton with 56 players from 7 different clubs. This is the first time that Castle Oaks participated in the Team Play, they came in first place and they were awarded the perpetual trophy. The Niner s returned to Poppy Ridge in Livermore for the Tournament of Club Champions (TOCC). There are 47 players from 12 clubs. For the second year in a row, our Niner Low Gross Champion is Karen Cramer from Boundary Oaks. Second Place was Cathy Pierce from Modesto Muni and 3rd was Bev DeViney from Skyettes. Our Low Net Winners were; 1st Place Elma Savage from Modesto Muni, 2nd Nancy McDonald from Lincoln Hills, and 3rd was Janet Read from Boundary Oaks. The second flight winners were; 1st Place Bailey Anderson from Modesto Muni, 2nd Debbie Burrows from Diablo Hills and 3rd was Pauline Gil from San Ramon GC. The third flight winners were 1st Place Elaine Chung from San Ramon, 2nd Mary Jo Brady, Buchanan Fields, and 3rd Monika Danielson, Rio Vista A rules workshop was also held at Rio Vista where PWGA brought a team of five to hold the workshop where they walked three holes and demonstrated various rules. The Niner webpage got a facelift this year with the help of our intern Lisa Consiglio. The idea was to make the flyers to the playdays easier to find and our Niner Blog became more active. At the Bay Area Workshop, a new Rules Official was recruited and we welcomed Elaine Ciccone from San Ramon Niners to the committee. I would like to say, that the camaraderie among the Niner Clubs supporting each other has been a delight to work with. And last but not least I want to acknowledge my support staff Marilyn Lindberg our Tournament Chair and Marilyn McRitchie our Coordinator who have been there to run the tournaments in my absence.
