9 Philadelphia Cricket Club Etiquette Cheat Sheet Replace your divot taken from the fairway. Shout Fore whenever you or your playing partners hit a ball that leaves golf course property or heads towards a visible person. When taking a practice swing, be sure you have a safe zone around you. Rake any footprints you cause in a bunker. Fix your ball mark and one other on every green. Do not slide or place your golf bag on a green. Replace the flagstick properly and gently. Be punctual for all starting times (arrive 10 minutes before). Respect neighboring residents and yell fore if you hit a wild shot. Never hit a shot off of adjacent property. Be sensitive when retrieving a ball from adjacent property. Do not use the course as a bathroom. Place trash in trash cans and pick up trash seen on the property. Never jump-around between holes. Pick the right set of tees. Don't let your ego get in the way of having a good time - pick the set of tees at a yardage you can handle. Worry about the group in front of you and the pace rating and avoid the 'well no one is pushing us' mentality. If you play in 4 hours and 45 minutes, there is no way anyone behind you can play any faster if there are consecutive tee times, right? Remember - the correct position is behind the group in front of you, not in front of the group behind you! The pace of play rating for the course is 4 hours. Failure to maintain a proper pace of play negatively impacts the experience of others. Keep your eye on the ball. Many lost balls are a result of not marking the flight with a landmark, or just plain not looking after you hit your shot. Keep score by the tee of the next hole.

10 Ten Most Commonly Broken Rules in Golf 1. Gimme Putts Except in Match Play, the ball must be put into the hole on every hole. Too often people feel that a putt is good when playing a normal stroke play round and pick it up without tapping it into the hole. 2. Lost Ball The proper procedure when a ball is lost outside of a water hazard is to return to the spot from which the original ball was played, drop a ball and add one penalty stroke. The common error here occurs when a player correctly adds the penalty stroke, but drops the ball in the wrong place, the area which they believe ball is. 3. Out of Bounds The proper procedure when a ball is lost hit out of bounds is the same as a lost ball. The player is to return to the spot from which the original ball was played, drop a ball and add one penalty stroke. The common error here occurs when a player proceeds as if the out of bounds stakes were hazard stakes and drops the ball at the point where it crossed out of bounds. 4. Teeing off outside the markers The teeing ground is defined as a rectangular area two club-lengths in depth, the front and sides of which are defined by the outside limits of the two tee markers. Far too often we see people tee off slightly ahead of the defined teeing ground, most likely because they do not know this definition. In Stroke Play competitions, the penalty for this is two shots and the player must play another ball from within the teeing ground. In Match Play, the player s opponent has the option of making the player re-tee without penalty. 5. Touching the line of putt A player may not touch the line of putt with either their hand or putter unless it is to remove a loose impediment (sand, leaves, etc.) or to repair damage (old hole plugs or ball marks). This means that touching the line to indicate the line to a playing partner is a penalty. Repairing spike marks or footprints are also a penalty. The penalty is two shots for such an infraction. 6. Improving Your Lie Many times when we play preferred lies or Winter Rules people take that to mean that they can improve their lie anywhere. This is not correct; this condition applies only to the fairways. A ball may not be moved in the rough. Also, sometimes when we are playing the ball down, people feel that they are allowed to move the ball out of a depression or divot, especially in the fairway. This also is not correct; the ball must be played out of bad lies even in the fairway. 7. Grounding Club in a Hazard When a ball comes to rest in a hazard, either a bunker or water hazard, players are prohibited from grounding their club. Far too often players are seen grounding their club in a hazard, especially in bunkers. In addition, players are not allowed to test the conditions (take practice swings) or remove loose impediments. The penalty for this is two shots. 8. Asking for Advice A player may not ask an opponent or fellow competitor for advice when preparing to hit their shot. They may not ask what club the other player hit or how much he felt that wind or a hill effected the playing of that shot. Similarly, a player may not volunteer any of this information from their own shot. 9. How to Drop - There is one proper way to drop the golf ball. The rules state A ball must be dropped by the player himself. He must stand erect, hold the ball at shoulder height arm s length and drop it. Any method other than this is a one stroke penalty. Many people just toss a ball on the ground or do any number of other things to violate this rule. 10. Water Hazards and Options Many people are not aware of the proper options when they hit a ball into a water hazard. First of all players must know that there are two different types of water hazards, regular water hazards (yellow stakes) and lateral water hazards (red stakes). For regular water hazards, there are three options: 1) Play the ball as it lies, with no penalty (don t ground your club) 2) Under penalty of one stroke, drop a ball as near as possible to the original location 3) Under penalty of one stroke, drop a ball anywhere behind the point where the ball last crossed the margin of the hazard, keeping that point between themselves and the hole. For lateral hazards, there are five options. They are the three options for regular hazards plus two more. Those two additional options are: 4) Under penalty of one stroke, drop a ball no nearer to the hole and within two club-lengths of the point where the ball last crossed the margin of the hazard. 5) Under penalty of one stroke, drop a ball no nearer to the hole and within two club-lengths of a point on the opposite margin of the water hazard equidistant from the hole as where the ball last crossed the margin of the hazard.

17 Junior/Family Golf St. Martins Overview Sunday St. Martins is designed to give Mulligan, Par and Birdie Squad juniors and their families the chance to learn about golf; enjoy competition; and spend quality time with family and friends. Parents and/or family are strongly encouraged to participate in the program. The one-time fee for each junior to participate is $175 and includes instruction; on-course time; prizes; gifts; a season-ending cookout; pictures; and much more! Open to Mulligan, Par, and Birdie Squad juniors. Schedule The program will run every Sunday afternoon from June 3 rd to August 26 th. Groups (determined by age/ability/family) will be assigned tee times every half-hour, with the first group starting at approximately 5pm. The oldest kids will tee off early; the youngest kids will tee off later. Structure Juniors & their families will be broken into separate groups (determined after signups, but usually 6-8) using a combination of age, ability, experience, and parental preference to determine groups. We will try to limit the number of juniors in each group to no more than 8 in order to maximize the individual attention given to each junior. Each week the juniors will enjoy a half-hour of instruction followed by golf on-course. Parents are encouraged to participate with their kid s on-course and we ll have tournaments each week.

18 Cricket Club golf professionals will be teaching & supervising each week. They will provide instruction and guidance and also roam the course to help out the parents and children. Each junior is expected to have his or her own clubs. Once signed up, juniors may participate as often as they wish. Weekly attendance is not mandatory! Because of the structure of the program, juniors who signup will be billed the program fee and refunds will not be available. Please remember that we are grouping juniors after signups so cancellations after groups are determined will negatively impact those children in the affected group. Please do not signup unless you are confident your junior will enjoy and participate in the program. Carts will NOT be available during the program all players are expected to walk. The focus of this program is to be an introduction to golf in a setting where families can spend quality time together on the course. On-course play is a much more effective and fun way to get children hooked on golf; that is why we focus so much of the program on actually being on the course. We need help from each parent to reinforce and monitor proper course etiquette each week (i.e. fixing divots; playing fast; repairing ball marks) to ensure the kids maximize their experience. Participants in Sunday St. Martins have the option of taking three 30-minute lessons for $100!! Our recommendation is to take the lessons prior to the start of the group sessions so you are that much more prepared to have fun and make golf part of your lifestyle! Register via at ahartman@philacricket.com.
