3 APRIL 2017 GREYHOUND MONTHLY VICTORIA CEO s Update To date, animal welfare and integrity have been GRV s overarching priorities as GRV responds to the Milne and Perna Report recommendations to help secure the sport s immediate future. Although GRV has established its internal capabilities in these areas, our focus on animal welfare and integrity will continue, and we are also increasingly focused on the medium to long term, working to build a sustainable and vibrant future for greyhound racing in Victoria over the coming decade and beyond. One of the key issues here is to encourage quality breeding so that there will be a sufficient number of greyhounds available and ready to race to ensure a full and competitive racing calendar. GRV is tackling this issue on several fronts. Firstly, there is the need to stabilise and increase quality breeding which has been slowing due to a range of concerns about the industry s long term future. The stakeholder engagement workshops held last year generated several suggestions for improving breeding outcomes. GRV is now working with the Industry Consultative Group and other stakeholders to further develop these proposals for consideration by participants at a new series of workshops in the next few months. We are also developing information and education campaigns and toolkits to help participants work with the Department of Economic Development, Jobs, Transport and Resources (DEDJTR) draft of the new Code of Practice when it is released for consultation later this year. GRV is working on initiatives to keep greyhounds in the racing system to extend their racing life and to ensure that a high percentage of pups whelped go on to have a viable racing career. The aim is to program and run races for greyhounds of all abilities by improving methods for the grading and selection of races. This includes considering the use of the Aged Prize Money calculation as a method for grouping greyhounds of similar current ability and form to race against each other. It is also worth remembering that with breeding numbers slower than they have been in previous years, participants will have more opportunities and less competition for prize money in the near future, as well as being able to lower the standards they may consider necessary for a dog to be capable of being a successful racer. As participants have made clear, there is also a shortage of breaking and training facilities available for trainers and educators. So, improving existing training facilities at clubs and building new ones is a key focus of GRV s five-year infrastructure plan which is investing around $35 million in new capital works. GRV is now working with Ballarat, Bendigo, Sale, Geelong, Traralgon, Sandown and The Meadows to develop their facilities as high-quality training centres for participants with investment in bullrings, slipping tracks, walking machines and other facilities. A new bullring has been completed and is being tested at Sale with lessons learnt from its development guiding work at other clubs. Plans are also underway for upgrades to coursing tracks at Melton and Lang Lang and the slipping track at Wangaratta so that these venues will also host new and improved training facilities for greyhound racing. Other infrastructure projects underway include the rebuild of the Horsham track, with electrical and irrigation works nearing completion along with a refurbished sub base while new fencing and lure rail are about to be installed. The track is on schedule to be operational again in early May. Design and project management work for new judging towers at Warragul and Warrnambool is also in progress. Turning to the action on the track, this month s edition of Greyhound Monthly Victoria includes a roundup of all the Australian Cup action from The Meadows including a great win by Fanta Bale who is now emerging as another champion to carry the Bale name and the story of Skyes Apprentice and his owner and first-time greyhound trainer, Murray Warren, who together have overcome their injuries to become a formidable duo on the track. It s a great example of what the sport is all about and GRV will be looking to tell more of these stories over the year, in both the Monthly and through the popular Greyhounds are My Life videos, so stay tuned. 5 APRIL 2017 GREYHOUND MONTHLY VICTORIA Feature Article By Molly Haines An engineer by trade and a handyman by nature, Murray Warren isn t the only member of his household who has spent countless hours as an apprentice. Warren s greyhound Gus, better known by his racing name Skyes Apprentice, has spent the last two years working under the watchful eye of Skye the Golden Retriever, who has not only provided company but proved to be the best mentor a dog could ask for. Gus and Skye are best friends, they do everything together, Warren said. Manners aside, Gus, who was named by Warren s son Ryley, has provided thrill after thrill for his first-time greyhound trainer, winning nine out of 25 starts. But nothing could compare to Gus maiden victory in March of 2016 at Geelong. It was unreal handling Gus and watching him win his maiden, Warren said. There was a lot of work that was put into Gus as a youngster; he overcome a blood virus as well as a fractured front leg after playing a little too hard with Skye in the backyard. After we got him right and he started performing, well it got addictive. It s not hard to see how the addiction came about, as Gus went onto win eight races from nine starts, including five consecutive victories taking the duo all over Victoria from their home of Point Lonsdale to Shepparton, to Geelong and then to The Meadows. Warren's greyhound passion began two and a half years ago when he had an accident at work resulting in him having an artificial disk placed in his neck. Needing a hobby, Warren didn t hesitate to go to his neighbour Neil Bell, who has been training greyhounds for more than 30 years. Bell had success with a greyhound by the name of Bazza s Gift who won 15 races from 66 starts and still resides in his backyard after going through the GAP program. Warren was introduced to local breeder Scott Kiddle who provided him with two pups to rear. Within two weeks I had two greyhound puppies running around my backyard with Skye, Warren said. I mucked around with them a lot in the backyard and also took them down the beach so they could meet new people and other dogs. I don t think Gus has left my side since I got him; everywhere I go he is a metre behind me. Experiencing everything for the first time, Warren has relied on Bell a lot to guide him through each stage of Gus career. Neil has always done it this way, so he is the perfect person to help me. Without Neil I wouldn t have gotten involved in greyhound racing. He has been a terrific mentor to me practically holding my hand throughout my time with Gus. With Bell just a custom-made gate away, Warren uses his walking machine to help exercise Gus with Bell s retired greyhound. All I have to do is open the gate and Gus runs straight into the walking machine; he loves it. Warren, Bell and Gus have broken the mould of how greyhounds can be trained. Living practically as a pet, Gus can race while at the same time enjoying the banana lounge with his best friend Skye. Gus is currently recovering from broken fibular under the watchful eye of specialist greyhound vet Dr Alastair Smith. Greyhound racing is really time consuming and I didn t realise just how much time it would take up, Warren said. But I am always learning. Nothing compares to the love that Gus has for Skye and Warren. From walks down the beach to relaxing on the couch it shows that for every Phar Lap there is a Tommy Woodcock but in this case, Gus is lucky to have both Warren and Skye. 6 GREYHOUND MONTHLY VICTORIA Please visit grv.org.au for all the latest GRV news LOCAL CHAMP SOARS IN TRARALGON CUP Jesaulenko (5) defeats Faregal (1) in a thrilling Traralgon Cup finish. 6 By Gerard Guthrie and Andrew Copley There was a double celebration for local trainer Terri Morris when her hometown hero Jesaulenko claimed a thoroughly deserved feature race success in the Group 2 Topcat Video Traralgon Cup Final on March 25. Runner-up in two of the most prestigious Group 1 events on the Australian calendar, the Melbourne Cup and Temlee, Jesaulenko, owned, trained and bred by Traralgon-based Morris, secured an overdue Group race triumph when edging out Fabregal in a thrilling finish to the Cup. In addition to claiming the $47,000 winner s purse, Jesaulenko s stirring victory saw the son of Irish Derby victor College Causeway crowned the inaugural Gippsland Carnival s sprinting champion, snaring the accompanying $14,000 bonus. After being edged out in his heat, Jesaulenko started at $6.90 from box five and staged a titanic duel with ex-south Australian Fabregal, finishing the better in 30.15sec, his 28th win from 61 starts. It was a case of second time lucky in the Traralgon Cup for Jesaulenko after he ran sixth to Pantera Nera in 2016 as the $3.30 favourite, with Terri Morris delighted his Group breakthrough came on home turf. He s racing as well as ever but he is getting older and I was starting to wonder whether he would ever win a group race, a delighted Morris said. He has run second in the Melbourne Cup and second in the Temlee. I can t believe he s finally done it. This being his home track is so special. You can t get better than this. He was a bit underdone in his heat but he was just right for the final. He will be going to McDonalds on the way home tonight and again for brekkie in the morning.

JESAULENKO AND STOCKTAKE CLAIM GIPPSLAND CROWNS By Gerard Guthrie and Andrew Copley In an unforgettable Traralgon Cup night for Terri Morris, Jesaulenko s breakthrough victory at Group level catapulted him to the top of the leaderboard and saw him claim the mantle as the first Gippsland Carnival sprint champion and a $14,000 bonus. Jesaulenko, which contested three of the four Carnival legs, running second at Sale, being a reserve for the Warragul Cup and victorious at Traralgon, finished with 50 points, four points clear of Aqua Cheetah on 46, with Aston Bolero holding third with 44. It has been such a great concept, Morris said. Look at the crowd tonight it s huge. And they re not just greyhound people, there s people from this town who rarely come to the greyhounds. Being the Gippsland Carnival champion is the icing on the cake, and the bonus prizemoney is amazing. I haven t told my husband Scott yet but I ve just put $2000 on the bar. The Gippsland Carnival was something of an afterthought for trainer Gary Peach, but Stocktake proved to be the surprise packet of the staying series and finished on top after running third in the Traralgon Distance Cup Final on the night. Stocktake, a homebred son of Lochinvar Marlow and Peach s excellent producer Inventory, missed the first leg of the Distance series at Sale but then won the Warragul Distance Challenge and ran fourth to star Burn One Down in the Victoria Cup at Cranbourne. MICK'S ANGEL 19 SUPER SOOK 22 Chasing the $10,500 stayers bonus, Stocktake took a two-point lead into the Traralgon feature, with 49 points to his credit, with second-placed Aston Harvey his only threat. Stocktake settled in fourth place and found the line well to finish third to Wayne Vassallo s duo It s A Fling and It s A Bird, continuing his ultra-consistent form since stepping up to middle and staying distances. Stocktake finished with 61 points, 14 clear of Aston Harvey on 47, which didn t add to his account after running fifth, with Chrichton Bale, the first reserve at Traralgon, third on 43. It s a long drive from Cape Clear to Gippsland but this series has been fantastic, Peach said. He wasn t prepared for staying in time for the Sale Cup, but it s been great racing him at Warragul, Cranbourne and now at Traralgon. The best thing about it is that we ve had a clear pathway for him to race. Often when you nominate for a staying race you don t know if they ll have enough greyhounds entered to put a race on, so this carnival has been terrific. It s also given us a chance to meet people because you re racing against a lot of the same dogs all the time. So we ve got to know many of the Gippsland trainers like the Lieshouts, the Dewans and the Scott-Smiths as a direct result of the Gippsland Carnival. It s been great. 8 GREYHOUND MONTHLY VICTORIA Please visit grv.org.au for all the latest GRV news GREYHOUND ADOPTION PROGRAM SMASHES RECORDS FOR 21 ST BIRTHDAY 8 By Bridget Scott A large crowd, including the Hon. Martin Pakula, Minister for Racing (pictured above), gathered at Flagstaff Gardens on March 17 to celebrate GAP s 21st birthday. This was another impressive achievement to add in its list of many milestones. As government officials, GRV board members and dozens of pet owners gathered to mark the anniversary, GRV CEO Alan Clayton (pictured right with founders, Anita Smith and Melanie Tochner) announced that for the first time in its 21-year history GAP was set to exceed more than 1000 adoptions in the last financial year. Last year the program set a yearly record when it rehomed 809 greyhounds. That record has been surpassed once again, with GAP confirming over 840 adoptions to the end of February. Thirtyseven greyhounds found new homes at the latest adoption day at Sandown on March 4. GAP and GRV staff as well as many of their dedicated volunteers walked their greyhounds through the gardens creating a sea of GAP's signature green. GAP has made major waves throughout its 21-year journey of raising the profile of greyhounds as pets. GAP has taken part in numerous initiatives such as the Prison Pet Partnership, which allows inmates at minimum security prisons to foster greyhounds and prepare them for life as a pet. In the last 12 months, GAP has opened a testing facility in Mount Mercer to allow for the growth of the program and boasts a working partnership with the RSPCA since February 2014 to help facilitate more adoptions. 9 APRIL 2017 GREYHOUND MONTHLY VICTORIA FROM LITTLE THINGS BIG THINGS GROW By Andrew Copley Among those in attendance at last month's GAP 21st birthday celebrations were vet nurses Melanie Tochner and Anita Smith (pictured below), who founded the program way back in We started the program out of the Sandown Veterinary Clinic, which is where we were working as vet nurses, because we wanted to improve the image of the greyhound breed, Ms Tochner said. My dad trained greyhounds and I found it really upsetting that people in those days would cross the road to avoid his greyhounds when he walked them in the street because they thought they were dangerous animals. This couldn t be further from the truth. The program has gone from strength to strength after some humble beginnings at Sandown. We couldn t believe it when we achieved 100 adoptions, so to think there will be 1000 in a year is beyond our wildest dreams, Ms Tochner added. You see so many pet greyhounds here in Victoria now, and every time I see one I feel really proud. 11 APRIL 2017 GREYHOUND MONTHLY VICTORIA First Aid for Greyhounds: Preventing, Detecting and Treating Acidosis By Andrew Copley Acidosis can be fatal, but it is also often avoidable. It is a muscular condition that is perhaps more common in greyhounds than any other species, because greyhounds push themselves to capacity in pursuit of that elusive lure. Leading greyhound veterinarian Dr Chris Boemo discusses acidosis in his latest first aid video to feature on Greyhound Racing Victoria s Care & Standards website. Acidosis is a painful muscular condition associated with exercise which can occur in greyhounds that have run too far or too hard, when they re not adequately prepared for it, or when they run a much faster time that they would normally run, and they end up pulling up sore, Dr Boemo said. The level of severity can range from minor soreness to major muscular breakdown. In more severe cases, where there is a large amount of muscle breakdown, dogs need hospitalisation, intravenous fluid therapy and pain medication. The worst-case scenario is that they can go into renal failure and die, Dr Boemo said. The racetrack potential of greyhounds subjected to acidosis will diminish to the point that they will run slower times than was previously the case. Weight loss is associated with acidosis and can stay with them for several months because their muscles die as part of the condition. Muscles don t have a really good ability to regenerate, so once they die, they aren t replaced by new muscles. Sometimes, so much muscle mass is lost through acidosis that the greyhounds lose lengths permanently, Dr Boemo explained. Dr Boemo said that racing greyhounds over distances that they are suited to and physically prepared for is a key to avoiding acidosis, along with good hydration. To avoid acidosis, it s super important that greyhounds are well hydrated before and after they race, especially in hot weather. If your dog has had a particularly hard run, electrolyte supplementation and replacement is imperative, as is providing your dog with a good, nutritious meal within two hours of the race to minimise its chances of developing acidosis, or to at least minimise the effects of it. The symptoms of acidosis sometimes take hours to fully surface. The common signs of acidosis are stiffness and soreness. It could be mild soreness through to severe soreness whereby the dog can hardly move and is almost cramping up, Dr Boemo said. If you re checking your dog (for soreness/injury) the day after a race, or two days after a race and you run your hand along his back and he s in pain; or if he s having difficulty getting on or off his bed, that could be a sign of acidosis. Then, if you take him out to the paddock for a run and he doesn t want to run, and you run your hand along his back and he s either painful through his saddle region or through his back area, or if he s got tight, painful legs and he s starting to scuff his toes, at that point in time he should definitely be seen (by a vet). It s super important that greyhounds are well hydrated before and after they race, especially in hot weather. If your greyhound has got a minor muscle soreness and it s not seeming to progress, some anti-inflammatory treatment may be all that he needs along with high levels of fluid intake in his food for the next 4-7 days. Dr Boemo said rest was important for greyhounds with acidosis, even when it s a mild case of the condition. We don t want to be exercising a greyhound with acidosis excessively because we don t want to be worsening the muscle activity while it s recovering. We want to be resting the dog and doing little more than light walking for the first 5-7 days. This is the major role of the GOTBA and we implore our members to work with us to make our sport the best and most enjoyable that it can be for both our dogs and everyone involved. We acknowledge that looking after your dogs is a seven day a week, 24 hour a day commitment, however it is important to take time to form functional communities at club level and with your representative body the GOTBA. It is only by working together that we will ensure the future success of our sport. We need you to continually stay up to date with what changes are happening and your responsibility to abide with these new rules and regulations. This is best done by reading the Greyhound Monthly magazine and checking GOTBA and GRV websites and social media channels and reading all s sent by us to inform you of what we are currently working on and why. Constructive comments will help us represent your views and only lead to better outcomes. Rumour and speculation undermine all the good work that is being done and destroys confidence in the industry. So know what is happening, ask questions and provide us with your suggestions so that we can work together. Safety for our dogs while trailing and racing is paramount so we are trying to determine the best design and surfaces by getting scientific data and practical advice from trainers so that there is consistency in track design and surfaces preparation that puts safety first. 3. We are constantly lobbying for fairness when people return a positive swab for low level food and supplement contaminants. Many trainers in this situation have been long term participants with no previous history of positive swabs. We believe a fine and education on how these positives came about, so as to prevent future infringements should be considered. 4. We would like to see the grading system simplified and young dogs not penalised for winning high stakes in maiden events. A system where you don t have to travel all over the state to win a low grade race at each track, but have a rating where you can race locally most of the time and still remain competitive. 13 APRIL 2017 a woman's best friend By Bridget Scott Greyhound Racing Victoria celebrated last month s International Women s Day by acknowledging the many females who contribute so much to the sport. From Hall of Fame Inductees to hobby trainers, the Victorian greyhound racing industry is made up of a diverse range of women, many of which can boast a lifetime of involvement and achievement. Karen Pitt (above) is one of these women and manages to juggle her hobby and passion for the dogs with a fulltime job as a school teacher, plus kids of her own. She s also trains greyhounds for a syndicate called the Shades Of syndicate which is comprised of around 30 women, most of which are relatively new to the industry. Greg Miller (CEO of Sandown) contacted me about the syndicate during the planning stage and I was excited to be a part of it. He wanted to encourage women into greyhound ownership and the industry in general, Ms Pitt said. Ms Pitt selected two pups from a litter of her own to be sold into the syndicate and they currently race as Shades of Lippy and Shades of Earl. The syndicate now owns six dogs which all race under the "Shades Of" prefix with female trainers. Ms Pitt, who first got involved in the industry through her dad said it s important to encourage female participation in greyhound racing, and sport in general. I think that it's so important to encourage females into the greyhound industry and racing in general. Sport has traditionally been male dominated but I think it's great that women are becoming more involved not only in racing but also in administration. She said that growing up she would read The Greyhound Recorder, and when she saw an ad for some puppies in that newspaper one day she asked her dad if they could buy one. After much convincing, we bought a little black girl who raced as Fluent Lee. She was a very successful racer and her puppies went on to group racing success. You could say my future was set the day I walked into that puppy pen and picked out our first little girl. She went on to become a pet once her racing career finished and lived with Ms Pitt until she passed away aged 11. The mum and teacher said there won t be a day that she doesn t have a greyhound. Her ashes still sit above my fireplace to this day. I am a school teacher and a mum so my schedule is very full but there will always be a greyhound on the end of my lead. By Andrew Copley GREYHOUND MONTHLY VICTORIA Q & A WITH PETER RILEY Fanta Bale s Australian Cup win on March 4 evoked no shortage of emotion from her handler Peter Riley (right), who is a full-time employee for trainer Robert Britton. Riley gives an insight into his life in greyhound racing. Why was handling the 2017 Australian Cup winner such a proud moment for you? Peter Riley: Fanta Bale is a real character and I developed a bit of a soft spot for her soon after she arrived at Robert s kennel. I've turned into a bit of a softy in my old age and do spoil a few (well, all) of the dogs. (Photographers) Clint Anderson and Paul Munt were signalling for me to give a wave or a salute when I was walking back down the home straight after the race, and I did a quick one with the lead, but then just let out the two-hander! This is Robert s third Australian Cup win. What is the key to his success as a trainer? I don't know where to start he feeds and treats the dogs well, has a good eye for ability and has acquired a lot of knowledge over the years. He has had a great grounding from his dad, Allan Britton, and he trains for good owners and breeders with great damlines. He gives his dogs every chance to show their ability and is willing to give almost any dog a go. He also knows how to detect and treat injuries in their early stages. What is your title and what does a typical work day involve for you? I am sometimes referred to as Kennel Foreman and you could say I am Robert s right hand man. A typical day starts at around 6am and consists of emptying the dogs out, cleaning kennels and weighing dogs if they are racing that day. On most mornings, I'll take a couple of greyhounds up to the You Yang Ranges for a two kilometre walk. If I don't go for a walk I'll help Rob free-gallop the dogs, then we make up the feeds, empty the dogs out again, then feed the dogs. Those racing get a small pre-race feed. Then we clean the yards, dog dishes, grade the work runs and get the cars ready for racing. We empty the dogs out again at around lunch time and once again at around 5pm. When racing we can finish as late as 1am or 2am the next morning. I go to the races on most days except Fridays - that is my day off. What advice would you give to someone wanting to follow in your footsteps? You need to love the job to do what I do - the long hours and lack of a social life can be very taxing. I recommend someone who wants to get in to this part of the industry to start out as a catcher and then, once they have some experience, to get their handler s licence and offer their services at a racetrack. Then it is a matter of keeping their ears open for a vacancy with a trainer, or simply contacting trainers and asking how they do things can also lead to opportunities. 13

The words are from Anakie breeder, owner and trainer Angela Langton as she spoke about a greyhound she co-bred that spent a week in the vets following a tiger snake bite at 14 months of age. Langton, who is a Cytologist by degree and has spent the last 25 years studying human cells detecting cancer, said she had little knowledge about the effects of tiger snake bites prior to the incident with Sammy. Twelve months later Sammy is racing under the name Tiger Bite Turbo and Langton believes that early detection has been the key to his remarkable recovery. When I got the call about Sammy being unwell all I knew is that I had a sick dog and I wanted to do everything possible to help him, Langton said. Sammy raised alarm bells when he was found shaking and weak in a yard on a warm day in March. At the time I didn t know what the outcome would be, all I could do is trust the vets opinion, Langton said. According to aecvets.com.au, close to 6500 pets are bitten by snakes each year in Australia. Sammy was among the 75 per cent of dogs bitten to receive anti-venom and survive. Sammy did more than survive, he is now thriving after spending a week under 24-hour vet supervision and eight weeks of rest back at the kennels. I knew Sammy was back to himself when he was bouncing around in the kennels with plenty to say, Langton said. We slowly started to put him in the runs on his own, making sure we monitored how much water he drank and if the exercise he was doing was too much. Langton believes that knowing your greyhounds is vital to aiding them in recovery. I get so attached to the dogs and I always want to give them the best opportunity and in this case, I wanted to make sure Sammy recovered whether it was to be a pet or a race dog, she said. In the long-term, Langton is confident there will be long term effects, and young Irish trainer Jack Buckley (pictured with Sammy) guided this remarkable greyhound to his first victory at Geelong, almost a year to the day he was bitten. Sammy s first win wasn t just special because of everything Sammy had been through but it was great to provide a young trainer who is trying to make his mark on Victorian greyhound racing in Jack, his first Australian winner," Langton remarked. It was a very proud moment for Sammy s co-breeder and owner Michael Cullen who has been involved owning and breeding greyhounds for around six years. Sammy s maiden win was amazing, Cullen said. Knowing all the of the work people have put into helping him recover it was a win for everyone. BROUGHT TO YOU BY A REGULAR LOOK BACK AT THE HISTORY AND HERITAGE OF GREYHOUND RACING Against the Odds This month Greyhound Tales looks back at another champion of the past, one that few expected to have achieved what he did. Trained by Joe Hili, Tangaloa (pictured) was a newcomer with only five starts in 1978 but Sandown Committee member Paul Hogan argued that with five wins for these starts Tangaloa had earned his place in the heats of the 1978 Melbourne Cup. Tangaloa went on to win the Cup before placing second in the 1979 Australian Cup. However, over the next 12 months, Tangaloa s career slowed right down as he recovered from a broken hock, went out to stud and then suffered from a broken tail. Many people in the greyhound racing community thought Joe Hili was crazy to enter the dog in the 1980 Australian Cup and the odds against his win was an unthinkable 33/1. But not only did Tangaloa take first place, he did so while giving another great racer, Tempix, a five lengths head start, becoming one of only three dogs to win the Melbourne Cup/ Australian Cup double. After a career that included 19 wins and 28 placings from 57 starts and prizemoney of more than $93,000, Tangaloa went out to stud until the ripe old age of 15, producing many champions including Eaglehawk Star, Rustic Venture, Pretty Short, Tangairn and Kid Campbell to name just a few. Tangaloa was inducted into GRV s Hall of Fame in 2011 as the dog who beat the odds. 15

Lil received life membership of the club in recognition of significant service over many, many years on the committee and helping out around the club. The Ballarat GRC s Oaks race, held in February each year, is named after Lil, and many regular race meetings at Ballarat have a race named after her. A former greyhound trainer, Lil was awarded GRV s prestigious Ken Carr Medal in 2002, an award which recognises outstanding contribution to a Victorian greyhound club. Please visit grv.org.au for all the latest GRV news Jan Wilson inducted into Victorian Honour Roll for Women Vale Lil Dickie By Andrew Copley Former Greyhound Racing Victoria Chairman, the late Mrs Jan Wilson OAM, was recently inducted into the Victorian Honour Roll for Women for her advocacy to improve animal welfare practices across the State. After retiring from politics in 1999, Mrs Wilson was appointed Chairman of Greyhound Racing Victoria, and for a decade she was the Chair of the sport s national body, Greyhounds Australasia. Such was her impact that she was elected President of the World Greyhound Racing Federation for three years. In 2009, Mrs Wilson was awarded a Member of the Order of Australia Medal for services to the racing industry and to animal welfare. Her contributions during her career and beyond retirement benefited many, including elderly and migrant residents of the City of Dandenong. 17 APRIL 2017 GREYHOUND MONTHLY VICTORIA Zambora Brockie Retired to Stud By Molly Haines Three-time country cup winner Zambora Brockie (pictured) has been retired after finishing third to Blazin' Bomber in a heat of the 2017 Australian Cup at The Meadows on 25 February. Finishing with 31 wins from 53 starts and surpassing half a million dollars in prize money, Zambora Brockie has already made himself at home on trainer Anthony Azzopardi's couch following a career that included two Group 1 wins and the Ballarat, Horsham and Warrnambool Cups. "He is three-and-a-half now and he has done more than his owner Charlie (Azzopardi) and I could have asked for," Anthony Azzopardi explained. "Zambora Brockie is a lovely dog and was absolutely awesome to train; He was just perfect in every way." Although his freakish speed will be missed on the track, it may not be too far away before we see some little Zambora Brockie's hit the racetracks, with Anthony receiving countless calls from breeders shortly after his retirement was announced. Mick's Angel Heaven Sent By Michael Floyd While it may have been an upset result for punters, Mick s Angel provided her owner and trainer with a moment of unbridled joy at Sandown Park on March 2. I ve had three seconds at Sandown but I ve never won one here on a Thursday night. It s an honour, I ll give you the tip, ecstatic Hoppers Crossing trainer Allan Meyer said. Mick s Angel showed a powerful finishing burst to win the 715m event by half a length in a slick seconds, which was one of the most satisfying moments in the Meyer s training career that has spanned the best part of two decades. You know how you like to tick things off in your life? Winning at Sandown is one of those boxes ticked. My wife Kaye and I only have two dogs, but they re our life. I m retired, I get up in the morning and look after the dogs. We re just really happy. Mick s Angel s breakthrough win was also an emotional victory for her owner, Faye Craig. Faye is one of the best owners a trainer could ask for, Meyer continued. I met her husband Brian Mick as he was known to his mates at the Hoppers Club and we raced a greyhound named Mick s Lady. She won six races and we had a lot of fun with her. Brian went to buy a half-brother to Mick s Lady and when he went to go see him, a litter-sister was there as well. Faye wanted to see her and despite Brian saying they were only interested in the dog, Faye took one look at her and insisted they buy her too. As it turns out, the girl (Mick s Angel) has been the best of them. Faye has always had a close bond with Mick s Angel, a bond that only strengthened since Brian s passing and one that no amount of money could break. She took over ownership when her husband Brian passed away. She s really into the horses, but she loves this dog. It s her pet, she s knocked back some big offers of $30,000 to $40,000 and she s just said, no she s not for sale. She even has a pool in the backyard just for Mick's Angel the kids aren t even allowed in it! Meyer said. 17

18 GREYHOUND MONTHLY VICTORIA Please visit grv.org.au for all the latest GRV news A FANTA-STIC AUSTRALIAN CUP WIN By Gerard Guthrie & Andrew Copley Underrated but ultra-consistent Fanta Bale claimed her third Group 1 trophy at The Meadows and her first as a sprinter with a surprise victory in the Sky Racing Australian Cup Final (525m) on March 4. Trained by Robert Britton for Australia s most successful breeder Paul Wheeler, Fanta Bale had won two 600m features at The Meadows, the Hume Cup last October and Rookie Rebel invitational on the opening night of the $1.2M Australian Cup Carnival. After winning the Rookie Rebel, Britton opted to revert to sprinting for the Australian Cup rather than testing the daughter of 2012 Topgun hero David Bale and US-bred dam Ucme Typhoon as a stayer and his decision proved to be a $250,000 masterstroke. It s fate that she won tonight. I actually had her entered for a 700 metre race a little while back, but I had to scratch her because she was a little bit sore. She ended up missing five weeks of racing, but had she raced that day I probably would have kept her over the longer distances and never even contemplated putting her in the Australian Cup, Britton said. Paying $8.30, Fanta Bale won her Australian Cup heat in 29.98sec from box one and she started at $8.30 from box eight in the decider, with the move to the outside alley a concern for Britton. Silver Chief and Temlee hero Lightning Frank was the $2.40 favourite from box three but he missed the start as Fanta Bale showed great speed to lead Aston Bolero on the first turn. Aston Bolero gained the ascendancy shortly after but Fanta Bale railed to the lead turning for home and dashed clear, defeating the strong-finishing youngster Eminent Reality by 2 ¾ lengths in 30.01sec, with Aeroplane Bob running third. Thompson s second stringer Trip To Eden ($4.80) was chasing a change of fortune in his third consecutive Group 1 assignment after finishing runner-up in both the Galaxy and Zoom Top, where he was beaten nine lengths by Burn One Down. With Burn One Down at the tail of the field, Trip To Eden burst between Teddy Monelli and Alera Bale in the home straight, defeating Teddy Monelli by 1 ½ lengths in 42.31sec. Trip To Eden had been knocking on the door of a big race win, and I had a real feeling he was going to win tonight, Jason Thompson s wife Seona said. They are total opposites in some ways. The Meadows will host the second Greyhound Community Day which was first held at Healesville in November last year. All pet greyhounds and greyhound owners are welcome to attend the event on Sunday April 2 at The Meadows from 11am until 3pm. Come and enjoy a free day out at the dog track with your furry friend and be part of all the activities which include dog washing, greyhound walks and educational talks. By Andrew Copley GREYHOUND COMMUNITY EVENT RETURNS Husband and wife team Tom and Andrea Dailly kicked off March in the best possible way, training 12 winners on one day on March 1. The Anakie kennel s outstanding run began at The Meadows, where they provided nine winners from the 12 races at the Wednesday meeting, followed by another three winners at Ballarat that night. It was just one of those days when things went out way, Tom Dailly said. We had a similar day at The Meadows a couple of years ago when we trained the first eight winners on the card. DAILLY DOZEN This event also provides a fantastic opportunity for greyhound lovers alike to meet and mingle. The Greyhound Adoption program (GAP) has just celebrated its 21st birthday and has rehomed over 840 dogs this financial year (to the end of February), easily passing the record of 809 achieved during the entire financial year. Non-green collar greyhounds are required to be muzzled and all dogs are to be kept on the lead. Any breed of dog is welcome. By Bridget Scott On Father s Day last year Matthew Height s life was thrown into turmoil when he suffered from a massive stroke that turned everything he knew upside down. But the road to recovery has been made easier for the Height family thanks to the support of the greyhound racing community. Seven months on from the life-threatening stroke, the father of two boys has been on a difficult journey that saw him not leave hospital until mid-january. Matt s father Ken said the greyhounds had been a crucial part of his son s recovery. They are the backbone, he concentrates on greyhound racing, Mr Height said. Matt s five months in hospital didn t offer much joy but one exception was the day Traralgon trainer Terri Morris paid a visit with her dog Jesaulenko in tow, not only a champion greyhound but one that Matt is a particular admirer of. He (Jesaulenko) climbed up on that bed and just fell asleep, I will never forget the grin on Matt s face, Ken said. Formerly a President of the Warragul Greyhound Racing Club, members from his local club as well as police officers from the region have rallied behind Matt. At the ripe age of 18 Matt joined the police force and his career as an officer flourished from there. The Dux of Detective School in 1998 at the Victoria Police Academy, Matt went on to solve a major cold case and featured on Channel 9 show Insight for his work in solving one of Victoria s complex murders. Eventually the intensity and pressure of the high-profile role grew old and Matt made the decision to move to Warragul where he set up a 50-acre greyhound property. He now resides in Yarragon. A sergeant at Warragul, Matt most recently moved to Neerim Police Station where he s the Officer in Charge, also balancing his passion for the dogs which had led him to both train and breed litters. Other than his family, those dogs are his life and give him something to look forward to, his father said. Since Matt s stroke Mr Height has taken his son s dogs in and raced them along the way. Matt also has a GAP dog Flynn that sits by his wheelchair every day. Matt s been to two race meetings now and that s given him a real buzz. I said to Matt the other day, I want to do more for you, but he said to me, dad you ve saved me from going insane because of the work you ve done with those dogs. Now seven months down the track, Matt is undergoing both occupational and physiotherapy every day. His current condition is that he has paralysis down the entire left hand side of his body. The therapy is part of a massive attempt to get the left side of his body working, Matt s wife Meagan said. We ve had no response from his hand or arm so far, but we ve had a little bit from the leg which might be enough for him to walk in the future. Matt s skull still needs to be replaced after it was removed to allow the brain room to swell. Meagan said the support from the greyhound racing industry had been absolutely phenomenal and that her family has been supported in so many ways. When everything happened the phone was ringing off the hook and people still continue to send their love and support. Matt has formed those beautiful relationships over the years and when something like this comes along people stand by you so fiercely. A major fundraiser will be held for Matt on April 21 at the Warragul Greyhound Racing club with proceeds raised on the night to go towards a wheelchair accessible van. Matt s father said he would also like to thank all the people who have supported their family along the way. The greyhound community, as well as the police have been sensational, Ken said. An enormous thank you to the greyhound people, it s really been unbelievable. 21

Unbeknownst to him, nine-year-old Roy had a topsy-turvy weekend at the start of March before finally finding a home thanks to some intense lobbying from a couple of young girls. Roy was one of three greyhounds that took the trip to Sandown on March 4 but didn t find a home, only to find a happily ever after once word got out about his bad luck. The power of social media prevailed when young Makenzie and Rylee put forward a letter to their father, pleading with him to let them adopt Roy after reading on the Greyhound Adoption Program s social media channels that he didn t find a home at the second adoption day of the year. GREYHOUND MONTHLY VICTORIA Not only did the two youngsters put their heads together to come up with a touching proposal, but they also combined their pocket money to help cover the costs for Roy. We felt really sorry for him, and so did mum, the letter read. In the end, Dad didn t get a whole lot of say after Nicole Tresize decided to take the trip to Seymour on Monday to pick Roy up and surprise the rest of the family that afternoon. We spoke to the Taylors Hill resident shortly after she picked up her kids from school with a big four-legged surprise in the back seat. Ms Tresize said that her eldest daughter Makenzie burst into tears when they discovered their mum had adopted Roy. I actually told them that Roy had already been adopted and gone to another family, Ms Tresize said. They were very excited. Despite Roy and canine pals Mick and Bill not finding new homes on the day, the staff and volunteers were thrilled to find homes for 37 other greyhounds at the event. It s hoped that Mick and Bill will find his way to someone s living room some time soon. Ms Tresize s family already owned a greyhound named Stewie after they adopted him from GAP in February last year. She said the two greyhounds get along and weren t too fussed by each other by each other. This is the second time in the past month where a greyhound has found a home as a result of a campaign via Facebook after Jimbo was adopted by the Walters family. Ms Tresize said the concept behind GAP was a fabulous idea. By Bridget Scott More than 100 people turned out for GAP's second adoption day of 2017, held Sandown Park on March 4. Forty eager greyhounds sat, waiting to be adopted, and by day's end, thirtyseven found new homes with the remaining three returning to GAP headquarters in Seymour until they find suitable homes. Luckily Roy, as mentioned above, was snapped up in the days following which left Mick and Bill still to find new homes. At present, GAP is smashing its record adoption numbers from last year with over 840 so far, eclipsing the 809 adoptions in FY Families came from near and far to take home their new pet and check out the much talked about breed. 37 greyhounds find their forever home GAP hosts adoption days approximately every six weeks at various locations throughout Victoria, providing both a chance for greyhounds to find their 'forever' homes, and educate prospective owners about the process and breed. As previously mentioned on page 8 of this issue, GAP celebrated its 21st birthday on Friday 17 March which saw a huge group meet in Flagstaff Gardens in Melbourne to walk their greyhounds. The Hon. Martin Pakula, Minister for Racing, attended the celebrations and said he was very impressed by the growth of the program. GAP has done a fantastic job in finding new homes for retired greyhounds, Mr Pakula said. 23

For a female to be eligible to breed, participants must ensure their greyhound has DNA results registered with Greyhounds Australasia, steps how to do this are as follows: 1. Contact GA and apply for a DNA kit 2. Take the kit and the greyhound to your Vet 3. Vet will complete the sample and post to the lab 4. After processing, the lab will inform GA and DNA number will be attached to the greyhound s record via FastTrack 5. If all other requirements have been met (see below for PINK CARD registration) the greyhound will be ready to complete the registration. GRV recommends applying for your DNA kit as early as possible to allow sufficient time for DNA results to be returned to Greyhounds Australasia and recorded before the greyhound is in season. The turnaround of the DNA result can be somewhere between two and six weeks, dependent on the Lab. BREEDING INCENTIVES CRUCIAL FOR INDUSTRY CONFIDENCE: ICG By Andrew Copley The Victorian Government's pending new Code of Practice, relationships between GRV and participants and a new prize money agenda were among the big ticket items put on the discussion table at the most recent Industry Consultative Group (ICG) meeting. The underlying theme of the meeting was building industry confidence, and ICG members provided invaluable intelligence on a range of topics including the life cycle of greyhounds, grading, racing, swabbing, the role of clubs, capital works and veterinary training. With varying opinions around the table, suggestions such as the introduction of breeding incentive and reward schemes were seen as crucial to restoring industry confidence, as were announcements of upcoming infrastructure improvements at racetracks and increased communication from GRV including more face-to-face interaction with participants at clubs. The ICG advised that relationships between participants and GRV staff had significantly improved in recent months, thanks to a friendlier approach by welfare and investigations teams when visiting greyhound properties. ICG members also suggested GRV staff would benefit from being educated about greyhound welfare and trainer needs to assist them in having more practical expectations around swabbing. One ICG member said she regularly heard complaints from participants along the lines that they have never been subjected to such strict compliance from GRV. She added that participants should be thankful that this is the case. With regard to the State Government s pending new Code of Practice for the Keeping of Racing Greyhounds - which will replace the previous Government s existing Code of Practice for the Operation of Greyhound Establishments - one ICG member said that when it comes to compliance there would always be resistance. The ICG highlighted that the new Code, which GRV understands will soon be released for public consultation, has seen participants raise concerns that they won t be able to comply with the possibility of increasing infrastructure requirements to their properties. The attendees also added that support from GRV will be crucial to keeping people in the sport. The ICG also provided valuable feedback on a proposed new prize money structure, which is aimed at spreading money more evenly across the board. WHAT IS THE ICG? 26 In 2016, the Board of Greyhound Racing Victoria appointed an Industry Consultative Group (ICG), with members having appropriate experience and diversity across a number of areas. The ICG meets every six weeks to discuss major issues facing the industry, out of which suggestions are forwarded to GRV s Board for consideration. The ICG panel currently includes Judith Bornstein (Chair), Dr Barbara Backhoy, Steven Clarke, Tracey Corneille, Peter Craig, Leeanne Crawford, Marg Long, Daniel Nugent and Sandra Reed, with several other positions currently in the process of being filled.

Her first litter, to Talk s Cheap, includes highly promising duo Last Outlaw (won four from 13) and Down Mexico Way (three from eight), while a second litter, to Vee Man Vane, is 12 months old. She had six pups to Talk s Cheap and all of them have won races, Altona Green trainer Malcolm Davis of Hot Genetics, who has won nine races from almost 100 starts. The rules shouldn t deter people from breeding, particularly breeders who have consistently bred and reared quality greyhounds over a long period of time and clearly know what they are doing. She is proof that it is possible to come back to racing after having litters of pups. She s no superstar but she is a marvellous little animal and she just loves to race. As long as she s competitive and still enjoying racing I ll keep going with her. She ran second in a veterans race at Mount Gambier recently and one of her sons (Down Mexico Way) won at the same race meeting, so that was pretty special. Mount Gambier holds a MUM ON THE RUN veterans race every second week, and there are a few veterans races in Victoria but I d love to see more of them scheduled to give older dogs more opportunity to race against greyhounds their own age, as it helps prolong their careers. While a complication with her second labour led to Hot Genetics being spaded, the Davis family is continuing to invest in the greyhound racing industry by way of breeding pups. My son Craig has bred four or five litters in the past 12 months, all with top quality brood matrons. He had to miss a season with White Spyro (winner of 22 races) because her first two litters were too young to race so she hadn't proven herself yet, but her first litter is showing promise so once they start racing and show a bit on the track it will just be a matter of writing to GRV to seek permission to breed with her again, he said. Some breeders feel disillusioned by the new breeding restrictions, but the rules are there to give people the best chance of success. The rules shouldn t deter people from breeding, particularly breeders who have consistently bred and reared quality greyhounds over a long period of time and clearly know what they are doing.
