CEO Note BREEDING SEASON LAUNCH Today the official launch of the breeding season by the Deputy Premier and Minister for Racing Troy Grant can be viewed on Trots TV. The Deputy Premier has again demonstrated his support for the harness racing code with assisting with the launch. Visit to view the launch. A NIGHT FOR COURAGEOUS JIMMY The fundraising night held at Bankstown Paceway for injured horseman Jimmy Webb was a rousing success with $50,000, when combined with the on-line auction. being raised. What was so special on the night however was the courage shown by Jimmy who attended in his motorised wheelchair with his family Therese (wife) and three daughters, Emily, Stacey and Lara. This is both amazing and courageous considering Jimmy at this stage only has movement in his upper body but not his fingers. Most encouraging is Jimmy s outlook with the long road ahead. He cracked jokes about his situation and had the audience in laughter and not once did the smile disappear from his face as he talked with many of the guests. Whilst there were approximately 250 attendees at the fundraiser special mention should be made of Rod and Julie Smith and Colin and Cheryl McDowell who as usual were extremely generous in successfully bidding on the auction items. The Bankstown Club s legal team Thurlow Fisher have guaranteed the $50,000 figure is reached by topping up the amount raised on the night and with the on-line auction. The effort from Les Bentley, Ann Waite and Steve Thurlow was exemplary whilst HRNSW staff, Kate, Diane, Peter and Reid along with MC Greg Hayes and volunteer auctioneer made the night a success. But the road ahead for Jimmy and his family won t be the easiest therefore it is hoped the harness racing fraternity will continue to support them into the future. Jimmy s next mission is to be home (out of Prince of Wales Hospital) for Christmas. AWARDS NIGHT The Awards Night which is the culmination of the season just past and a celebration of the achievements of the industry is mid-month and already seats are filling fast. Whilst some of the award recipients are known there are others such as the Junior Encouragement, various horse categories, Don Clough Appreciation, Carnival of Cups and Industry Volunteer of the Year Awards which will be revealed on the night. In many instances the volunteers are the very life of Australian society as we have witnessed over the decades in all sports and activities. In harness racing it is no different and the traditional Volunteer of the Year nominations have been received from the Clubs and these hardworking contributors with be specifically recognised. CUP SEASON STARTS AT EUGOWRA The Carnival of Cups season suitably starts with the rich $30,000 Canola Cup at Eugowra on the long weekend in October and the tiny central west village is being prepared for another mammoth population explosion. Long recognised as the most socially active event on the Carnival of Cups schedule the hard working Eugowra Committee sets it s goals to exceed the previous year and from the early planning strategy, 2015 with fine weather, will again deliver. The Voice star Cath Adams will be a main attraction singing the national anthem and a number of other songs to entertain what is hoped will be a record breaking crowd. At $30,000 in prizemoney the Cup which is the richest C0 class race in Australasia will certainly attract the best horses available with owners and trainers already reserving their horses for the big event. To assist these connections the Parkes and Dubbo Clubs have programmed a special series of races titled The Escort Way. These $3,000 races will be restricted to C0 horses being aimed at the Canola Cup to allow trainers the opportunity to have their horses at peak fitness for the Canola Cup heats. TWELVE HORSE FIELDS It is pleasing to note that trainers are prepared to support the wagering strategies of HRNSW when at the very first meeting of the new season a twelve-horse pacers field was drawn at Tabcorp Park Menangle. It is important to note that the turnover at the new Bathurst circuit has increased significantly over the old track where ten-horse fields were the maximum and that wagering on the Victorian product where twelve-horse fields are regularly drawn far exceeds total NSW turnover. If increased prizemoney and other important industry benefits are to be delivered to stakeholders and twelve horse fields is an initiative which will assist and all participants should be prepared to accept the strategy. CLUBS CORPORATE GOVERNANCE Recently all Clubs have been offered a model constitution which is in accordance with current legislation and regulation to ensure corporate governance is at the CEO Note 2 September 2015

required level. This strategy will also involve the various kindred groups as part of the Strategic Plan. It is pleasing to note that many Clubs have already commenced the process to adopt the model constitution and in particular the efforts of the progressive UHRA Committee. A new association representing the supporters of the trotters will be formed in the near future and all interested participants are now formally requested to contact Club Liaison Officer Amanda Rando. INSPECTION DAY AT THE MENANGLE PARK TRAINING CENTRE Whilst the project will not be open until the new year HRNSW will be holding an inspection day at the Menangle Park Training Centre on Sunday 11th October from 11am to 1pm for participants to inspect the facility. Interested trainers will also be able to register expressions of interest and receive a copy of the licence agreement and operational procedures for the Training Centre. Currently there are four buildings erected each of which can stable 20 horses. In this stage of the establishment of the training centre there will be ten barns two of which will be dedicated to the water walker facility. The 1000 metre track is formed and following the significant rain experienced at Menangle Park recently it has withstood that test of damage in such adverse conditions. The huge dam in the centre of the track which will be utilised for the source of water for track maintenance is full to capacity. SOUTH WEST & RIVERINA REGION MEETINGS The HRNSW Board and Executive Management will hold the September Board Meeting in Wagga in association with meetings with the regional clubs. There is significant benefit in holding these meetings in the regional centres as it gives all committee members of the various clubs the opportunity to have face-to-face dialogue with the HRNSW Board Members. The schedule of meetings is: Tuesday 29th September Albury (10am), Leeton (11am), Young (12 noon), West Wyalong (1.30pm), Griffith (2.15pm), Temora (3.00pm), Junee (3.45pm) and Wagga (4.30pm). Wednesday 30th September Coolamon (8.30am) and Cootamundra (9.15am) followed by the Board Meeting. BOARD VACANCY The HRNSW Board position, which has been vacant since February, is expected to be filled this month. Notification was given by the Office of Liquor, Gaming & Racing that a panel in accordance with legislation had been selected to carry out interviews in the early part of September. Panel members include Ms Robyn Kruk AM, who has been a member of the NSW Planning Assessment Commission since 2014 and is a former CEO and Commissioner of the National Mental Health Commission; Ms Rosemary Caruana, who is the Acting Executive Director of the Office of Liquor, Gaming & Racing (OLGR); and former member of the NSW Legislative Council, the Hon Charlie Lynn. THE MAN IN THE BIG HAT VALE JOHN GIBSON Harness racing certainly lost another pioneer with the passing of the highly respected studmaster, breeder, owner and mentor John Gibson. Often referred to as the man in the big hat a Stetson was his trademark apparel John Gibson could have easily been known as the man with the big heart such was his kindness to all those who came in contact with him. He battled around the northern rivers show circuit as a youth with a team of horses which eventually led him to pioneering the importation of stallions after establishing himself in the lucrative cattle trade in Queensland. To list the number of influential stallions John Gibson was connected to would require too much space but the fact he and his beloved Mary and dearest Jackie were recognised with national distinguished service to the breeding sector award. VALE GORDON MCWILLIAM & MICK WOODWARD The Western Districts trotting fraternity were saddened with the recent deaths of two legends of the sport in Gordon McWilliam and Mick Woodward who came from an era when the harness racing industry was referred to as trotting and as far as they were concerned it remained trotting. Gordon McWilliam who was from Gooloogong was most famous (along with his brother Jack) as the owners, trainers and drivers of Cocky Raider, an absolute super-star of the halcyon days of trotting. Cocky Raider driven by Gordon was the horse which ended Lucky Creed s incredible winning streak at 24 in the 1970 Australia Day Cup at Harold Park by the barest margin of a half inch. Mick Woodward was from Parkes where he was renowned as the master horsemen in every facet of the sport. He was most renowned however for being able to set a horse for a win (which was often accompanied by a betting plunge) which very rarely failed. He was a premiership winning trainer and driver at tracks throughout the district and one of his most notable horses was the Harold Park winning mare Blue Wren which was driven to victory in 1971 by world champion driver Herve Filion during the Australasian International Drivers Invitation. 4 Can Turnbull make it three in a row? Bathurst trainer Steve Turnbull has achieved something very special. In the past three seasons, the Inter Dominion and Miracle Mile winning trainer has averaged more than 200 winners a season. In fact Steve has been winning closer to 210 races a year since the 2012/13 season but he acknowledges the run has taken its toll and with daughter Amanda now living in Victoria the battle for his stable has become tougher. Early in the 2014/15 season Turnbull reassessed his goals and targeted a much more attainable 100 winners but as the summer months came and went, it became quite evident that Turnbull had lowered his sights too much. Amanda was returning more often than expected, son Nathan had made a comeback to the sulky and was driving in career best form. Another son Josh continued to educate the youngsters which allowed Steve to concentrate on his racing stock while youngest son Mitch was improving with regular opportunities as a driver. Steve finished the 2014/15 with 212 winners, five shy of his career best effort in 2013/14 when he won 217 races but still thirteen better than in 2012/13 when he finished with 199. So can Turnbull make it a double century in the new season? Understandably Steve is pouring cold water on the idea but he is showing no signs of slowing down. It will be a tough start to the season because the rest of the family is heading off to America to have a break so it could be a slow start for the stable. Turnbull said. I m not a big fan of being on a plane for such a long time so I m going to stay at home but the rest are going and I think it is very important because they are all very hard workers and deserve to have a break. While Turnbull is happy to stay at home while the family experiences Disneyland and the Little Brown Jug he still enjoys his time away from the stables and will again look to have a break during the season. I m much more at home at Broadbeach up on the Gold Coast, close to the casino, going out to dinner and things like that, that s a holiday for me. Hunter Valley trainer Shane Tritton finished second on the trainers premiership in 2014/15 but he has suggested he will be looking to streamline his team and will concentrate on his better horses and winning the better races. On the other hand Turnbull has no plans of cutting down in the immediate future. Steve Turnbull I m really proud that four or five businesses have been born within my stable, Nathan as a blacksmith, Josh as a breaker, Amanda as a trainer/ driver while Mitch is still learning but will get there in the future too. If I slow down then it has some effect on everyone in the family so for the time being I m just going to keep on doing what I have been doing and hopefully the winners continue to flow. Turnbull has no plans to relocate even when he does decide to wind down his team at some stage in the future. Despite considering a move to Melbourne previously, his tie to Bathurst remains as strong as ever. Steve Turnbull 4 August 2015

Bathurst is home, it will always be home, there was some thought about moving to Melbourne but I m happy we remained here in Bathurst now. Years ago we would go to Queensland every winter to get away from the cold and have a bit of a holiday and I enjoyed those trips but I m happy here at The Lagoon. Steve will continue to scale back his driving at Tabcorp Park Menangle and only rarely takes a drive on the 1400 metre track. I think it is a young drivers track, have a look at the people that are driving all the winners there, you have to be able to make a quick decision and act on that decision just as fast. I still have the occasional drive there but it is more often on a horse that can be a bit of a handful or when we have too many horses in and not enough drivers. As Steve has progressed through his career he has seen a change in his priorities. Early in his career, Steve would have given anything to have a drive in a race but these days he enjoys the training side of the industry a lot more. I get a lot of satisfaction getting them ready to win a race and that is something that has changed, I think when you first start out it is all about driving winner after winner but as you mature you begin to appreciate what it takes to get a horse ready to win. To win the Bathurst Gold Tiara for the first time this year was something very special, the Crown and Tiara are races that I have wanted to win for so long and to finally crack it for a big one on my home track meant the world to me. When asked about the improvement the stable has shown in the past three seasons, Steve finds it difficult to put it down to one factor. It is probably a mixture of a few different things, up until a few years ago I was having somewhere between 500 and 700 runners a year, that number has now grown to around 1200 starters every season. So more runners means more winners but I think the water walker that we have put in has had a little bit to do with the success as well, it just helps them recover so well and we have also bought a track conditioner which keeps the track at home in good order so it is probably a little bit of everything. The new bigger Bathurst track has helped Turnbull develop his metropolitan team and he will continue to make the regular trip across the mountains should he have the right horses. There is little doubt the new track at Bathurst prepares horses for the transition to racing at Menangle, it can be pretty daunting to get to the top of the straight but I think you only have to look at the number of races the Bathurst trainers have won in town this season to prove that the bigger track is a success. So how long can the Turnbull juggernaut continue to eat up training premierships? With no signs of slowing down it could be a dynasty that has only just begun. Steve Turnbull 5 August 2015

NSW Standardbred Owners Association The racing season is fast coming to an end and astute trainers are placing their horses to their best advantage, given that the higher profile contenders have mostly been spelled with a view to the next season. He shared in the ownership of three winners of 4 races in June, at Peak Hill and Bathurst, namely Blazing Brax, Tulhurst Ace and Tulhurst Sarsha. Ray Grubb, who hails from Sutton, has been a long time member of our Association and an even longer time supporter of Harness Racing, through his Stud Farm, Sutton Lodge. Ray won several races at Menangle with Bettor Believe It, one of which was in Her stakes won now exceeds $100,000. Dean Latter, our third recipient is one of our latest members and won two races with Justa Glamour at Tamworth and Newcastle. Well done Dean. Other successes came via Ultimate Trump at Tamworth, and we hope Kirsty is sharing the winnings!! Out third winner is Oberon based member Wayne White, whose mare Miss Rodriquez won her first race at Bathurst. This handy mare has had 12 starts for a win and six places and hopefully more success is on the way. 8 NSW Mini Trot Report September 1st sees the start of our new season. Junior members must pay their fees before competing after this date. Fees are $40 for one child, $60 for two children and $80 for family. Pony renewals are $5. On reflection, the NSW Mini Trotting Association season was a successful one with many new benchmarks set. Membership reached a new high of 172 active junior members which was achieved with the assistance of Education/Training Days which took place mainly in the Hunter Valley and Metropolitan regions. The concept, with the assistance from Harness Racing NSW, saw new members attend these days where ponies and equipment were supplied in a handson day for children. Many of those that attended now have their own ponies and attend regular meeting with affiliated clubs. Major events included the Mini Miracle Mile behind the mobile gate, The Fishers Ghost and Mini Inter Dominion series which saw the Riverina owned and trained Chester s Lad for Cameron Hart storm home late to grab early pacemaker Yogi Bear and Tyler Miles. Queensland Shetland Dan-Elles Dash for Cody Peters-Cash came with a well timed run to defeat Sparkling Star, another Qld trained horse driven by the New Zealander Anna Wells. Tegan Judd on the grey pony Whispering Gypsy made it a double for the Riverina with a fast start making it hard for the chasing Victorian visitor Who s Me Dad and Shannon O Sullivan. Our NSW Mini Trot Championship was conducted at Gunning and a record 169 nominations were received for the weekend. The 2015 champions were Yogi Bear for Tyler Miles in the midget division, Queenslander Sparkling Star took out the shetland s while retiring champion Energizer driven by Cameron Hart was successful in the pony section. Our association with New Zealand Mini Trots continued with Anna Wells representing New Zealand in the Mini Inter Dominion and Rebecca Heads performing well at our NSW Championships for the kiwis. As part of the exchange program Capital club member Codi Rauchenberger experienced an exciting time in New Zealand and got the opportunity to drive in 6 events at Alexandra Park. Newcastle/Maitland Club hosted a new concept called the Ross Gigg Mini Trot Drivers Challenge. Each affiliated club sent one driver to compete in five heats, with every driver competing on a different pony in each heat. A point score determined the eventual winner and it came right down to last event with Shoalhaven member Jemma Howard Coney taking out the series by one point from Codi Rauchenberger with Kellee O Neill from Penrith/ Nepean a close third. The new season looks bright for the pathway to senior harness with eligibility extended to allow members to compete in C Grade trials while still participants in mini trots. We encourage the revitalisation of the Maxi Trots concept and expanding the Training and Education program. Mini Trots Report 8 September 2015

From the Stewards Room NEW SEASON LICENCES All licensed persons are reminded that from 1 September, 2015 they will be required to hold a HRNSW Licence for the 2015/16 Season in order to participate within the Industry. To avoid disappointment, any person who has applied for but not received a Licence should contact HRNSW at the earliest convenience to fully understand their circumstances. NOTICE TO INDUSTRY RACE-DAY TREATMENT The attention of licence holders is particularly drawn to the new rule prohibiting any administration to a horse by injection on the day prior to a race in addition to the existing rule regarding prohibition of race-day treatment (of any kind). The new rule, AHRR 196B states: 1. A person shall not within one (1) clear day of the commencement of a race administer or cause to be administered an injection to a horse nominated for that race. 2. For the purposes of this Rule, one (1) clear day means the twenty four (24) hour period from a.m. to 12 midnight. 3. A person who fails to comply with sub-rule (1) is guilty of an offence. For the sake of clarity, one clear day (as referred to in part (2) above) means if a horse is racing on Saturday, the last time it can have an injection is Thursday. Giving a horse an injection anytime from midnight Thursday (if racing Saturday) is an offence. THERAPUETIC EQUIPMENT USE ON A RACECOURSE Recently Trainers have been observed using certain magnetic aids on a racecourse during a race meeting. Trainers are reminded of HRA Rule 213C which prohibits such equipment. Rule 213C. states; A person shall not have in their possession at a racecourse at which a meeting is being conducted any electrical, mechanical or galvanic device, equipment, appliance or apparatus which can be used to treat a horse. Forthwith, Trainers are advised that this Rule prohibits the use of the following equipment, and the like, at a racecourse during a race meeting including (but not limited to) ice wraps, ice boots, cool compression boots, magnetic hoof pads, magnetic (back) pads, magnetic boots, magnetic leg wraps, and massage pads. Any Trainer who is uncertain whether the use of certain equipment, or a practice, is in breach of this Rule should seek clarification from the Stewards. SPECIFICATION FOR WHIPS Drivers are reminded of the specifications for whips as provided for in the Rules. HRA Rule 156A states; The approved whip is a flexible whip of black or dark tan colour with a core of fibreglass with a handle base and shaft and either a leather keeper to a maximum of 60 millimetres in length and 20 millimetres in width or a non rigid tip amounting to a maximum overall length of 1600 millimetres. Emphasis is given to the requirement that the overall length cannot exceed 1600 millimetres (1.6 metres). For the guidance of Drivers where a cracker is attached it shall be subject to the approval of HRNSW Stewards being, (i) the length of the cracker shall not exceed 150 millimetres (15 centimetres or six inches); (ii) the cracker shall not include an unacceptably large knot and (iii) will be included within the overall length of the whip (ie: the whip including the cracker shall not exceed 1600 millimetres). Any Driver who has any concern regarding the specifications of his/her whip should approach the Stewards to ensure the whip is compliant. From the Stewards Room 9 September 2015

DRIVERS FULFILLING ENGAGEMENT Drivers are reminded of their obligations under Rule158 which states: 1. A driver shall fulfil an engagement to drive in a race except with the permission of the Stewards. 2. A driver shall not substitute for another driver in a race except with the permission of the Stewards. In order to promote the Industry as having a professional approach, where a Driver remains declared after the time prescribed and does not attend a race meeting Stewards will investigate the circumstances. Trainers and Drivers might expect that where a Driver holds a firm engagement to drive a horse and does not attend the race meeting or where a Trainer declares a Driver without having a firm engagement, penalties may result. GUIDELINES FOR PRE-RACE WARM UPS Trainers and Drivers should familiarise themselves with the following Guidelines. Effective from 1 September, 2015, HRNSW Stewards have adopted the following Guidelines to ensure that Pre-Race Warm Ups occur in a safe and uniform manner. 1. Trainers intending to Pre-Race Warm Up a particular horse shall amend their gear form so as to note the official industry record. 2.
