1 Talent never dies! Mecum Amerock Cheners Jarrod Lorensini has proven that talent never dies despite a decade away from race riding. On the 13 th of October 2007, following a win and a 3 rd placing in the Manangatang Cup, Jarrod hung up his saddle and walked away from the jockey lifestyle with over 450 winners to his name. After an extended spell away from racing, in 2013 Jarrod joined the Darren Weir Racing team as a trackwork rider. A couple of years on, his fitness had started to improve a great deal and by the end of 2016 he was eager to return to competitive racing. Jarrod worked extremely hard to get his weight down and build up his fitness. He took every gallop, every trial ride, and any opportunity that came his way to improve himself so he could once again obtain his jockey licence. At Warracknabeal on the 4 th of August, Jarrod made his long-awaited return to the race track as a jockey. Having had a life long association with horses, a love for the interaction and honesty they require, I found myself missing the routine, bond and affirming strength which comes with owning a horse of any shape or size. My last companion Nero, an Anglo Arab 16.2hh, was part of my life for 28 years, bred from the first horse I owned. Over the years my knees have weakened and after Nero (aged 28 and frail) was put down in 2010, I thought my horse riding days had come to an end. Then, through a series of circumstances, I spoke with Lee Purchase, initially about another possibility, but she said she had a gorgeous boy who has just been retired and I should come over and look at him. This is the photo below you took at our first meeting; it was love at first sight. The only thing I couldn t love was his paddock name Doom, derived from his sire Domesday. After many suggestions from family and friends, I decided Johnny Cash wore black, sang a song about a boy named Sue, and the result of Profit Share would be CASH! With Lee s patient guidance he arrived at my property on the 25 th of July. We let him go in the paddock and he went galloping away which made me question my acquisition. He very soon settled in and Lee s judgment was correct, he is a sweet boy. Riding him is unbelievable. To get on I use a stepladder, 4th step up puts me just above him. I lower myself into the saddle and he stands stock still until I have my feet in the stirrups and my hands ready, only then when I ask him to move on he does. He walks slowly as if he knows I m fragile. He has a soft trot and a lovely canter, he has never attempted to take off but I can feel the power of his ability to gallop to the finish line should he decide to. I can't recommend an off-the-track racehorse to everyone in a similar position. Experience, respect and understanding of where they have come from is imperative. What I can say is that a senior person should never give up the possibility of retaining their connection with horses but should pursue their passion and be guided by people like Lee. Lee's obvious knowledge and excellent work ethic places her in the prime position of advocating the right horse, once their racing career has ceased, to the right future. Johnny secured the title with 15 wins, 5 seconds and 5 thirds over the jumps leaving only 13 starts unplaced. To add to his accomplishments, on the 3rd of September at Geelong, his win aboard Sworn Evidence made it his 300 th Australian success since moving here from County Cork in Ireland almost seven years ago. Johnny s first Aussie winner was The Caterena in a Maiden Hurdle at the 2011 Warrnambool carnival. His major wins here since have been two South Australian Derby s (Gr1), two Grand Annuals, two Galleywoods, three Brendan Dreschlers, a Grand National Steeple and an Australian Hurdle. Johnny is not only a great jockey but also an impressive horseman, and his versatility switching between the jumps and flat racing make him such a valuable asset. Darren knows he can put John on any horse and completely trust his judgement. We couldn t be more proud to have such an incredible talent working at Darren Weir Racing. Trust In A Gust retired from Darren Weir Racing in March 2016 to stand at Swettenham Stud. Now over 12 months later the first of his progeny have been born. In amongst the early foals is a colt out of our very own Hotel Sierra who was trained by Darren from the time she was a yearling until the day she retired to stud. Hotel Sierra (out of Hi Sierra) was bred by Mick Leonard, Darren Weir s financial guru and Operations Manager. This little colt was born on Friday September 1st weighing in at 43kg, obviously taking after his mother and grandmother, both of who were quite small foals. It s not the size of the horse that matters - it s the size of the heart in the horse. Congratulations to Mick and Helen on the safe arrival of Hotel Sierra s first foal.
