1 May 2016 Newsletter..A BIG day.. Saturday the 14 th was a day to remember with the stable racking up seven winners in three different states, including two group winners. This was a big team effort and a great achievement. Winners included; Victoria- Smooth Consul- Maiden Plate at Donald Perpetual Crisis- Donald Classic Raw Impulse- Benchmark 90 at Caulfield Shades of Bella- Mares Handicap at Caulfield Olivier- Benchmark 90 at Caulfield South Australia- Howard Be Thy Name - Group 1 South Australia Derby Queensland- Real Love- Group 3 JRA Cup Howard and Johnny Salute Howard Be Thy Name and stable jockey Johnny Allen found Group 1 glory on Saturday the 14 th taking out the $500,000 UBET South Australian Derby. It was a super performance by the horse who is known as Russell around the stable. Settling midfield, he was wide with cover and took over at the top of the straight to finish it off strongly with a half-length victory over Etymology. This made it his fourth win in a row. His other victories this preparation have included the Listed Port Adelaide Guineas and the Group 3 Chairman s Stakes. A big congratulations to Johnny on his first Group 1 winner and all the owners involved. 2 Mastered the Cup Day 3 of this year s famous Warrnambool May Carnival was a day to remember. Saddling up three good chances, we scored our third Warrnambool Cup win in a row with Master of Arts. Stepping out to the distance for the first time combined with a perfect ride from Dean Yendall proved to be the winning formula. He settled down off midfield and travelled well throughout, hooking out at the 500 metre mark to the best going and finishing it off with an impressive 1.25 length victory over Vilanova and Swacadelic. Master of Arts has come through the run well and will continue on with his preparation. A massive congratulations to all the owners and a big thankyou to all the staff who have all played a part in these achievements. Of our other Cup runners, Master Zephyr finished a sound fourth and Falago finished with a luckless seventh. POP s pleasing return! Stable star Prince of Penzance put in a huge run at his return in the Group 3 RA Lee Stakes at Morphettville. Partnered by Michelle Payne, the pair were trapped wide but powered home and on the line were half a length behind the winner - stablemate Tenopah. He will now have a short break as the countdown to Spring begins! How glorious.. After putting in a somewhat surprisingly impressive victory at his first run for the stable at the Warrnambool Carnival, Glorious Sinndar continued on with his winning ways taking out a BM78 at Cranbourne. With his confidence and fitness improving after each run Glorious took it to the next level by heading to the big stage of Flemington and taking out the Listed $200,000 Andrew Ramsden Stakes with Harry Coffey in the saddle. Harry rode him a treat, getting a nice run on the fence and railing at the home turn where he took over the lead. Glorious was headed at the 300 metre mark but fought back with great heart to the line, with a strong half-head victory! Congratulations to everyone involved!! Newsletter 2
3 Warrnambool Carnival Wrap Up. It s May 3 rd and the countdown is over. The sky is gloomy, rain falling but that doesn t dampen the buzz around Warrnambool because it is now May Carnival time and what a successful carnival it was. Day one we had Fastnet Isle kick off his jumps debut and our carnival in Race 1. Partnered by stable jockey Johnny Allen, he started as race favourite and he didn t disappoint winning in bold fashion scoring a 1.75 length victory in the Carlton Mid Maiden Hurdle. In Race 2 we saddled up Paraggi having his first jumps start this preparation. He took over the lead jumping the last and finished off with an easy 4.5 length victory, getting the stable and Johnny an early Bool running double. Gimlet put in a good performance first up in the VOBIS Gold Strike Race, peeling off their backs at the top of the straight and running on to narrowly defeat her rivals. Glorious Sinndar wrapped up a successful first day being our fourth and final winner, he lapped up the heavy 10 going with an impressive victory in the Benchmark 78 Handicap. Day two was quickly off to a high when Waxing proved too strong winning by 2.5 lengths in the first race of the day. Gingerboy was our other winner for the day. He was sent out at $1.95 favourite and didn t disappoint putting in a classy performance with Johnny Allen in the saddle with an all the way victory, winning by 4 lengths in the feature hurdle of the carnival, The Galleywood Hurdle. We also had Mirage finish third in another feature, The Wangoom Handicap. By the third and final day there was a lot of good times had and definitely some sore heads about but that didn t stop the winners rolling in. Voodoo Lad took out the Benchmark 78 Handicap before Master of Arts put in a spectacular performance in the Warrnambool Cup proving victorious by 1.75 lengths under a superb ride from Dean, this being our third Warrnambool Cup in a row what an achievement!!! After the running of the last we wrapped up yet another great carnival with a total of 8 Winners, 6 Seconds and 5 Thirds, as well as a lot of other quality unplaced runs from the team. A massive thank you must go out to all our staff that did the hard yards working each day and presenting our horses in such immaculate order. And the Countdown is now on to the next Carnival Swan Hill. Bart s Big Heart! Black Heart Bart picked up the stables second Group 1 in South Australia within 2 weeks. Ridden by Brad Rawiller he put in a stellar performance settling just off mid field on the fence and once the gaps opened and the light appeared shortly after entering the straight he went on with a solid halflength victory in the $500,000 Goodwood Stakes over 1200m. With Queensland glory in mind it is going to be an exciting few weeks for Black Heart Bart s owners and the stable as all roads lead to the Stradbroke Handicap on June 11 th. He topped off a magnificent day at Morphettville with Zanteca taking out the Listed Port Adelaide Cup and Tonopah narrowly defeating stablemates Prince of Penzance (second) and Atlantis Dream (fourth) in the Group 3 RA Lee Stakes. 5 mins with Simon McCartin Date of Birth: 14/07/1990 Occupation: Racing Manager at Forest Lodge Favourite Horse: Run Neil Run Favourite Stable Horse: Speedeor (Dogga) Favourite Drink: Chocolate Malted Milkshake Favourite Food: Forge Pizza Favourite thing to do outside of work: Playing football My Ideal day is: Any of the 3 days over the Swan Hill June Racing Carnival Best Moment in Racing: 2015 Melbourne Cup Newsletter 3
